Jelly bean & Mac usb mounting solution - HTC One X

Since updating to Jelly bean many mac users are finding they cannot mount there phone to the mac to transfer files due to MTP
Google have their own mac app that allows mounting.

Found it today, works a treat.
Haven't seen any mention of it so far so thought I'd post it up as I still see many asking for a solution.

Yeah, I've been using this too - works a treat :good:
Only problem I had with it, was that it kept disconnecting when my phones screen went off.

I've used it and sometimes fails, we can use CWM and mount the SD to copy the files, but if you do not want to switch to recovery mode every time you want to transfer files, another good option is http://www.airdroid.com transfer files over wifi, and much more, i like this software.
And finally, we can also use SCP or SFTP.

MTP vs MassStorage

Was ( and still am) curious why Google choose MTP over MassStorage. The other member (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1023153) did some tests with interesting results. Can confirm that got similar results for MTP's favour ( transfered same video, music, pdf files to GN and HTC Sensation).
I don't think that was the only reason for Googles decision.
Also find out one very annoying experience with MTP : you can't edit file on phone memory. It has to be transfered to PC, modified and put back to phone...

It allows them to lump all of the internal storage together since MTP doesn't require the partition be unmounted with the phone.
Many people have phones that were partitioned poorly (N1, Vibrant, etc...) and after you install some apps you get an error that you've filled up your space (even though your phone still has 10GB free).
They hacked around it by doing Apps2SD, but even then, it wasn't perfect.
This new method allows them to utilize the full 16/32GB of storage however you want without any additional requirements from the user.
For most people that just want to copy their pictures off the phone, MTP is a lot smoother. It 'just works' and let's them get by with their day.
Unfortunately, the new way isn't perfect. I use Ubuntu for example and am having a hell of a time getting it to work. I eventually just gave up and installed a Samba File server instead.
Does anyone else have problems with folders not appearing or with errors when transferring files, or is it because I'm using a Mac and Android File Transfer software?
@tjhart85, you can get mtp working but you just need to compile the latest libmtp from source, libmtp that's included in the ubuntu repos is an older version.
i think I'm the minority here in that I actually like MTP.
The fact that I can unplug the phone, and it's ready to go is worth it. I hated the media scanning tool from gingerbread and before. Now the phone is ready to go when I unplug.
It lets the entire phone be one partition, so there are no annoying issues with multiple partitions for system, apps, etc.. It also lets the phone be used while its connected and transferring to/from the device. Also, no more mounting/unmounting and waiting for the device to be available.
It overall just removes headaches associated with files not being able to be accessed properly because they're on a different partition or on the SDcard (such as no widget support from apps installed on SDcard).
I also don't get the big deal over MTP and actually prefer it. I have a mac and haven't run into any problems. The file transferring didn't seem any slower and if anything seemed faster so I don't really get why everyone seemed to freak out when it was originally revealed.

I haven't tried this, but it does look promising:
http://collectskin.com/adbfs/
It sure sounds better than setting up a samba server, and since it's based on adb it can be made to run over wifi (although I'm not sure that is recommended).

It seems not all folders are appearing over MTP.
For instance my TitaniumBackup folder stored in /sdcard does not show at all and I'm not sure why. It might be because the folder contains no files the phone can work with? I honestly have no idea.
This was on Windows. Not Linux or Mac. So it seems to be a MTP-issue, not a platform-issue.
I had to adb shell in, create a tar of that and then adb pull it out to get it.
So yeah. MTP has its flaws. Hence me working on a workaround:

If I were to nitpick I would have to say that technically speaking that was always true, but yeah, now you actually have to manage that transfer manually and that sucks.
But you can use the memory on the phone while transferring from pc!

can I ask what exactly happens when you plug into a MAC? Eg, do you have to launch ATP, does it appear in Finder, does it launch iPhoto automatically? I'm just trying to get a picture & short of taking my MAC into town ... has anyone YT'd this?

MTP also solves the 4GB file size limit. With USB mass storage all phones have FAT32 for their data partition in order to be compatible with most computer, but that means 4GB file limit.
With MTP the file system isn't visible for the computer, so the phones will use a good filesystem like EXT4 also for the data partition.

is usb mass storage possible with root?

Just got a brand new Galaxy nexus today and haven't got a chance to root it yet. But i was seriously appalled by the fact that it doesn't support usb mass storage, which i did not know before buying it.
I just wanted to know, will rooting make usb mass storage possible?
no sd card and now this? I mean i love the phone but i can only take so much.
So you bought a Galaxy Nexus, but didn't know it didn't support UMS?
What's your specific problem with MTP?

Yes i did buy it without knowledge of that. I guess that's what i deserve for not reading fine print?
You failed to answer my question though...
Rooting must enable mass storage though or how would roms be flashable?
ROMs are transferred to the phone via MTP on Windows, just like music and videos are transferred.
MTP is the replacement for USB Mass Storage. You can still transfer files back and forth.

MTP does not transfer everything.
Try transferring your titanium backup files from your Nexus to your PC via MTP. I dare you. They're NOT there when you look at the Nexus from the PC-end.
Extracting stuff via "adb push" works fine though. This, and not having a drive-letter (so that things cant be scripted) was one motivation for me to start working on this thing:

Google/Samsung switched to MTP because now the OS and the files are on the same partition. So if you would mount the whole partition as mass storage your android would get down :-D
Maybe it could work with creating a new partition?

Well, my problem is I work on pc's , sometimes a customer's machine doesn't get the Ethernet or wireless drivers after and install. I would normally download them on my droid x and use mass storage to transfer the file over....that works in windows 7...NOTin xp.

it's called a flash drive, have you heard of those?
I'm sure the OP has heard of a flash drive. However it would be much easier to just mount the phone like he has done in the past to transfer the downloaded file. Fishing out a USB OTG adapter, flash drive, and transferring is just extra steps.
Yes, a flash drive is probably the best bet for now... but I see why the OP finds it less than ideal compared to what he was used to.
Perhaps someone will come out with a custom ROM that has a new partition scheme to allow UMS. I personally wouldn't mind having a little 512MB partition on here for just that purpose.

No no no. Keep the files on the flash drive. Plug it into the computer. Win? Or if you need to find new drivers, you surely have a laptop you can use at work. Faster to find + download then using the phone anyway.
Having your phone + USB cable to hook it up to the computer is more cumbersome than just keeping the drivers for your work on flash drive
What if you need to transfer different files back and forth, and don't always keep a flash drive on you? I found with my HTC Desire that having mass storage was very useful for when I didn't have a flash drive... Admittedly, I can use my gnex for the same thing as all computers I use have win7 - but that is beside the point!
Surely it is possible to create some app, so as far as the PC is concerned it is connected to a USB device, but on the phone something else is occurring? Through some buffer or something...
I'm interested as well, as I'm having some trouble setting my Fedora laptop to talk as MTP. I'm comfortable transferring files via ADB but it can be a chore, and obviously none of my friends will have adb on their computers so transferring files socially will be a little hampered...

Files not Updated at MTP

When connect my A100 to a PC via MTP, found some of the files deleted/moved not accurately shown inside the file manager of PC. The files, which had been deleted/moved via apps of tablet earlier, are still shown in the original location but are unable to be opened.
The database/index of the MTP program seems corrupted, is it possible deleted the MTP data and force a rescan?
Pls help, thanks.

Found a solution from other forum:
1) clear data of the "Media Storage" app
2) rescan the files via the "SDrescan" app (which can be downloaded from Play Store)

I had started a thread on this issue back in december, still having issues on Jelly bean on my xoom (I know it's a different device, but same issue).
On Honeycomb, I had problems, sometimes files would not be updated even after reboot. Now I'm on JB, having the same issue, so it seems to be a MTP issue that's independent of android version.
I have tried SDrescan, but it doesn't always work. Did SDrescan fix this issue on the Iconia?
btw, my workaround was to not use MTP, and install a samba share app instead. There are a few samba apps in the market, and you have to have a wifi network, but it's pretty solid compared to MTP.

Yeah, "SDrescan" fixed my problem at A100. Btw, "AirDroid" also a very good solution via Wifi....
Thanks for the information !
I had a Samsung S4 with exact the same trouble. (running 5.0.1 original Samsung ROM)
Did delete Media Storage Data and restarted the phone.
After that the display via MTP was fine... no need for SDrescan.
I did know already about the fact that i can restore pictures, videos and coverart on music with that trick... i was not aware that this also affects the standard file-handling for mtp.

Some linux distros support MTP. Ubuntu, for example, although it hasn't been officially backported to some older releases. But it is available for older releases in a developer's third-party ppa. Unfortunately, I can't post the link. Still, I prefer USB mass storage to MTP. But I'm going to try MTP for awhile and see if it grows on me.
I noticed that there are a number of apps that come up in the Android Market / Google Play Apps if you search for "USB mass storage", but I haven't tried any of them. There are also third-party apps that provide file sharing via wifi using samba or ftp. Not exactly what you're looking for, but I thought I'd mention it. ES File Explorer is an example. I use it, and like it, but I haven't used the particular features I just mentioned because, until my recent upgrade to JB 4.2 I didn't need them -- I used USB mass storage.
In a thread on AndroidCentral, someone said google does not want to use USB mass storage. I don't know if that's true, and if it is true, I don't know what google's reasons are for abandoning USB mass storage.

I tried a couple of these and they did not work reliably. I have a large git repo that I was trying to clone, and it would either silently fail mid-way (using Samba Filesharing for Android by funkyFresh), or git would complain about corrupt/missing objects (using Servers Ultimate by Ice Cold Apps). The latter also has an NFS server, but I wasn't able to connect to it. I kept getting a clnt_create Program not registered error. All of the problems here with both the samba servers and NFS could be specific to my hardware and software environment, and/or configuration settings. YMMV.

That's a good idea. I sorta tried that, and it didn't work for me, but it obviously has worked for other people. I put CM10.1.2 on my phone a few days ago. Until today, whenever I plugged it into my computer it would go into mass storage mode as expected and everything was fine. Then, I installed Button Savior, which required me to enable USB debugging mode, and after that it connected in MTP mode every time. If I tapped the notification it would give me an option to uncheck MTP mode, but tapping that any number of times had no effect (the checkmark wouldn't go away). I tried the solution suggested in the linked thread, but now it's even worse. It no longer connects in MTP mode, but it doesn't connect in mass storage mode either. Now, it connects in something called "installer mode" with no option to change anything. It shows up in Explorer on my computer, but when I try to open the drive the computer asks me to insert a drive.
Any idea how I get my mass storage mode back?

Please help with recovering photo/video after accidental format

Hi everyone, I am a very new iphone to android convert, and recently bought a used epic touch 4g and switched over to ting (which is awesome if anyone is wondering). However, I stupidly accidentally formatted my USB storage through my phone, meaning the 12 gb partition that contained a bunch of pics and videos of my kids from the vacation we JUST went on. I am desperate, I really would like to have them back, and after searching it seemed like not too much trouble to get them. But after downloading Recuva and running it it didn't find anything, but I don't think it even searched my phone, and instead searched my C drive. So I tried to get my phone into USB mass storage mode, but now I am stuck. There is no USB utilities option in settings, and I can't seem to figure out how to switch it from MTP to mass storage mode so Recuva can read my phone. Is there anyone who can help me try to get these pics back? By the way, I am rooted (friend helped me), but no custom ROM. I saw a post regarding this topic and tried a USB switcher app, but it does nothing. I am clueless as to what sfhubs autoroot is, and I think since I am rooted I shouldn't be using that, but I am unsure. Please help!

Might be a little way too technical but you could try photorec (or test disk). Its specifically for pictures and videos (test disk recovers a wider array of file types) It won't give you bs about which partition you want to check. Including USB and the sort. And it works nondestructively.
Tips:
Do not take any more pictures.
In fact don't even use your phone.
Leave it on recovery mode with USB mode on.
Caveats:
Test disk only works on Linux. Terminal only at that so it may be too complicated. You need to use dd which is very dangerous if you don't know EXACTLY what your doing. Potentially brick your device ~ ^ ^.
Having said that, one of the best things you can do short of forensics recovery.
Actually theres other methods I just can't remember.
[Edit]
Op I lied works on windows ^ ^
