USB tethering and Mobile Hotspot on a stock ROM - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all,
I am overseas right now, using a different SIM card from another company. I was wondering if there is a way of
enabling Mobile Hotspot or USB tethering without having to install a custom ROM. I really don't want to mess up with my
telephone and I'm happy how it is right now, however I have that limitation.
Right now if I try to enable it I get the error "Mobile data is not available or invalid SIM"
I have 4.1.1
Thanks

What's the ROM version?

I have been doing some more research and I found an app called FoxFi that makes it work. :good:

That'll work, but flashable mods have been created for each S/W version to enable the stock tethering app if you'd rather use that...

Wifi Tethering After Root possible?

I rooted my phone and since I'm like everyone else and don't want to pay 30 a month for wifi tethering, I downloaded 2 apps that do that: Barnacle's and the other wifi tethering app. Neither of them work, anyone have any ideas how to get this accomplished? I figured that since we have root now and there are netfilters in the kernel that we shouldn't have a problem.
I can't get Wifi Tethering for Root Users to work either

Try different versoins of wifi tether. I know on the hero side 1.6 was the only one that worked
to clarify, this is with android 2.1 using the userdebug RUU, not stock 2.1 or froyo 2.2, right?
now that you have ADB access, when you open one of the apk files to test it, can you monitor logcat and paste the results/errors it throws back here for us.
those of us w/o an EVO yet, less than 24 hrs, can try our best to help troubleshoot and give recommendations. hopefully it won't be too difficult!

just throwing out ideas to help speed up the process, not sure how much detail will help them?
might want to include version number of the userdebug rooted RUU we're using and/or radio version?
Joey, give me a few minutes to figure this out and then I'll post the logcat.

as far as I have read, when you test this in normal android mode you need root access.
you'll have root access in normal android mode if you flash flipz's STOCK ROM with root from the custom recovery.
wait does it work for the Stock Rooted Evo Rom posted in the forum? just the standard sense ui rom with superuser ?

Htc running 4.1.2 can't use any wifi hotspot apps

I tried using barnicle and it gives me an error "wifi:could not set ad hoc mode of wlan0 operation not supported on transport endpoint" all other apps say its working but it's not seen on any wifi enabled device. Is it because jelly beam doesn't support such apps? Can I use the phones built in wifi hotspot if that is the case and will I be forced to add on the wifi hotspot plan? Thanks Happy New Year.
What phone? Barnicle doesn't sound familiar.

Try CM10. Albinoman's RC3 is outdated and has several bugs that have been fixed mainstream by CM or Evervolv.

Ok, gotcha. I thought it was albinoman's because you just said jellybean 4.1.2. The actual ROM you are using is good to know. You only listed the Android version earlier in the post.
It sounds like Barnacle won't work.
No worries. Provisioning for tethering doesn't exist in CyanogenMod. SPG.apk is the provisioning app and also the tethering isn't linked in the device configuration so it won't charge you. My understanding with the provisioning is that it is never automatic. I think it takes you to their sign in page on ROMs without that removed which is only stock on the Inc.
I'm new at this but do you have a rom? I see "tiny4579" listed in my phone. I believe I'm currently using ponsAsinorem. Thanks for your help !

In short, you won't be billed for tethering on this ROM. Verizon won't know you're doing it as that hook doesn't exist in this ROM.
If tethering isnt linked to the device how does it still function unless im misinterpreting what "linked" means. Thanks !
And under about phone under cm version 10-20121120-pons-inc is cm10? And pons is the rom? Thanks so much !!

CM10 is the ROM and ROM version. CM10 is based off Android 4.1.2. Pons built the ROM.
And your other question, when you enable wifi hotspot on this device, other devices will see it as the default SSID of AndroidAP which can be changed if you want. By default it has a password so you need to change it or set it to open which can be a security risk.
Thanks for all your help !! I really appreciate it ! Happy new year
Oh btw to my other question of seeing tiny4579 in my phone ? You made a version of the rom? Thanks !

I'm keeping his build up to date yes.
Where in the phone are you looking when you say you're seeing my username in your phone? The about screen wouldn't show two ROMs.
In goomanager under browsing compatible roms along with aokp, invisiblek, miui, ponsAsinorem. That's where I go to change roms I believe.
Oh, yeah, that would have my build. It would be cm10-builddate-TINY-inc.zip.

[Q] Data On/Off Toggle?

It depends on what rom you are on. Some AOSP roms have that option baked it. I know Slimrom has it, so I would guess that will03's version will have it as well. I believe you can get there through X-posed and/or Gravity Box as well.

Hey all, just thought I'd share the NE2 Native Hotspot Mod

Code:

And here is a zip file for flashing in recovery. Again, this was only tested with Community Rom 3.1

The zip will work on the Community Roms up to 3.2+ since the services.jar is the same so far. Now S5-FEAT and DN3 (if I can ever get it working) use different services.jar so you will have to modify them to make it work.

And yet, it worked. Testing sucks in my apt, because the signal sucks. But, it did let me tether my tablet.

After testing for a while, I found that the hotspot fix does not work very well at all for the S5-FEAT 2.3 ROM. Although is does connect to devices, there is a very unstable internet connection, if any at all. Now I have to reinstall my ROM to roll back to using the WiFi Tether Router app. Ugh! Dont think so. I had a user on S5-feat 2.3 who tried it and said it didn't work. 2.3 s5-feat uses the same odexed framework files as stock ne2. If you do want to try it make sure you do a nand backup so you can revert if something goes wrong.
