(Q) Rooting the GSM GNEX - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

so I'm considering it but I don't want to mess it up! Is it easy? Is it hard? Does it get much faster than stock 4.2?also does it improve network speeds I drop signal every now and then and I wanna flash a different radio... I've been routing for years but I just lost an s2 due to a sticky power button :/.. Is that a common issue with the galaxy nexus also?

Pretty much, although I would recommend updating your recovery to the latest CWM (6.0.2.3) or TWRP (dunno what version that's on at the mo) - especially if you wanna use 4.2.x

I have zero bloat on my phone. I got mine about 2 weeks ago it is a development version and has the development menu in settings. I unlocked my botloader and rooted using super boot v2 and installed the GSM clockwork, yes GSM clockwork works fully you just need to delete the recovery from boot.p file from system. If you dont every time you want to enter cwm you have to re install it with rom manager. I moved it to the cwm folder in SD card. Now cwm works flawlessly and I was able to make a full nandroid. I gave mike my boot image and system image he is working on building a rom now for LTE models since that's what I have. I will be testing the LTE version for him when he pms it to me.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask I don't mind.

Rooted questions. And some others

I've been out of the android game for awhile and now I'm rusty. What's the easiest way to root this thing? I have the cdma version on 4.0.2. Can I do it from the phone itself? Also it seems this phone does some awesome things others couldn't. Anyone wanna point out a few of the highlights? And how do you edit colors in a kernal? This phone is mind boggling compared to my incredible
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400871
You can root using that or do it the old fashion style,
1. Get drivers
2. fastboot oem unlock
3. fastboot flash clockwork recovery
4. flash a ROM
5. flash a kernel
6. reboot
7. play.
Thanks any suggestions on a kernal? I haven't found a from I quite love yet. I'm thinking about trying aosp but I'm kinda liking the phone for now.

Boot 2 Gecko

i asked this in the nexus s forum (shortly before ditching that phone for an oh-so-glorious newer model); i was wondering if there's an easy way to get B2G on my galaxy nexus without compiling it myself. i took a look at the instructions, and was somewhat dismayed at the level of technical expertise i would need.
apparently i've gotten used to flashable zips - they're like crack

Hello Galaxy Nexus thread.
I have recently built a B2G ROM for Nexus S and am more than happy to do the same for Galaxy Nexus. I don't have a Galaxy Nexus so I have no way of testing it but it should work. I will start building now if anybody is still interested in this.

Okay here it is and everything seems to be in order; however, I had an annoying time creating a .zip to flash so I have no idea if it will even flash. I am thinking about uploading the actually image files you could flash while in the bootloader if the .zip doesn't work.
I haven't not tested this since I do not own a Galaxy Nexus...hopefully it will flash and work correctly. While flashing it might say Nexus S...ignore it.
1. Wipe data/cache.
2. Install like any other ROM.
3. Boot up, should take a bit for signal to work.
4. The unlock code is "0000".
Build M3 - June 8th, 2012: http://www.mediafire.com/?g4ermc3j447h49m
OR
Here is a more techy approach, if the above fails this should work.
1. Downloads "Files.zip" and "B2G_Data.zip".
2. Unzip the "Files.zip" and lave them on your PC in your folder where you can fastboot files.
3. Copy "B2G_Data.zip" over to your phones SD Card.
4. Boot up into bootloader mode and
-fastboot flash boot boot.img
-fastboot flash system system.img
-fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
in command prompt
5. Reboot into CWM and install the "B2G_Data.zip".
6. Should be working and unlock code is "0000".
Files.zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?19kmbfmv6uudpvx
B2G_Data.zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?ihl9x0idhwo9080 - Thanks drewgaren, I used his .zip as a base.
-M
Let me know if it won't flash...if it doesn't I might know what's wrong. Please make a backup of your ROM before trying this.
I appreciate your work! Will download and flash later tonight after I charge my phone up.

Uh.. I think there's a way, but that sounds complicated, and a difficult find for sure. Perhaps just look for a stock 4.0.4 verizon rom + radios + recovery and then relock bootloader via fastboot. Because there is no way you're locking your bootloader without fastboot... so you need to use it anyway, so just use the original method I linked.
Did you check make a nandroid backup?

But then you won't be stock... you'll be on a stock ROM but still custom recovery etc.
Just use the method Efrant posted and you'll be 100% stock. Its extremely easy, and you can be sure that nothing will go wrong because you'll be doing it manually yourself. Stop asking people to do things for you and just make it happen.

Confused about going to JB

Hi guys. all these threads and stickies about JB are confusing me.
I am not an expert at installing ROMs, but I do have my phone withÇ
-AOKP Milestone 5 (maguro),
- clockworkmod (not sure what version)
- FrankoKernel.(milestone 2)
- su.zip
And I do have ADB from Galaxy Nexus Tookit, so I did backup everything!
I would like to go to JB, still have Root access. Not sure if I should go to AOKP, its fast and good on battery usage, but been a pain for acquiring 3g data...seems I have to put it in airplane mode and back to normal to get data on 3g working.
So, I am thinking of going stock JB from Google that way I get updates from Google themselves.
Where should I start?
Thanks
If I were you I would flash a stock rooted jb rom version JRO03C that is the Google factory image one and see if you like it. Aokp is just doing nightlies now and they may not have the stability you are looking for yet.

You could also try a rom created with JB source, like CM10.
No need for the OTA updates from Google if you've got a ROM running.

I don't think that the op flashes roms very often, so I'm assuming that they want something completely stable which means cm10 is not an option yet.

Thanks guys, that's correct I don't flash Roms often at all! Well good news I am now on JB as I wanted. So far liking it a lot...battery is not as good as was expected.
Can I flash a different kernel, would that help? Or any other tweaks?
Otherwise...no problem, I pretty much have rechargers everywhere I am...home/work/car!
