Happens to me too... Accessibility is off... Interesting quirk.

Well Talkback was off so I am very confused. I finally fixed it by disabling Light Flow.... Weird.
Light flow?

I've heard light flow actually messes up accessibility settings so that may have something to do with it. It may have something to do with samsung's software rather than lightflow though as many devs have run into this hurdle and have already contacted samsung about it.

You are correct I see that Andrew has quiet a bit of detail on this issue with Talkback randomly kicking off. It appears to be a Samsung issue that is effecting other apps.
There's an issue with samsung phones and 3rd party Accessibility options. LightFlow installs an Accessibility option, as does Tasker and a few other apps. When those 3rd party Accessibility options are turned on, it cases the "talkback" to come on in certain situations (stock touchwiz launcher opening folders is another example) , and also other weird things like disable the "flow" input on the stock Samsung Keyboard. Devs have complained about this to Samsung, and we can only hope they decide to cooperate. I opened a ticket with Samsung's "customer service" and their response was basically that they "don't support 3rd party apps" , despite that it works just fine on any other android device.
For me, I was able to stop this horribly annoying behaviour by disabling "Custom Notifier plugin" under the accessibility section (as talk back was already disabled). This Custom Notifier is for the Sony Mn800 live view watch... it basically takes all notifications and pumps them out to the sony live view. Turning it off solved the problem.

Its driving me crazy! I open a book and it immediately starts reading it out loud.
I press "stop reading aloud" and it turns off, but when I exit the Books app and get back in its reading aloud again!
I have Talkback turned off in System settings and don't know what else to do...
Lol. No one must use Google Books apparently....

I use Google Books on my tablet lol. I never use the read aloud feature though.
I have this problem too and find it annoying.
Do you use the Light Flow app to control the front LED? I use this app, and I've read the accessibility access it has (seen in Settings-> Accessibility) seems to cause this bug for whatever reason. I haven't tried to reach out to the app developer for comment so I don't know if he's aware or fixing it.
EDIT: I sent an email to the developer to see if he is aware of the issue...
i use google books to read lately, but i didnt even know it had an audio read out loud function. so no i am not having any issues. i just open books and start reading normally with no audio strangeness...
I got a quick response from the Light Flow developer (+1 on that!) and it's a known issue with Android 4.0.
See item # 2 here:
http://www.folioflow.com/ff/page/website/lightflow/pageId/1931
Regarding the workaround, my phone already showed "not allowed" for web scripts, but I tried selecting it again. Time will tell if it did anything...

Wow, you're the man!!! Thanks for the heads up and for looking into this and contacting the Light Flow developer.
I do indeed use Light Flow - my phone was set to "not allowed" for web scripts as well...I selected it again as you did and will report back after I get home from work if it stops reading out loud.

Yeah my fingers are crossed too. Keep in mind that I think it takes a reboot for the problem to re-occur anyway...
Well, I starred this bug report on Google Code, and followed one of their suggestions - I disabled light flow in the accessibility settings (and light flow still works), and this stopped the 'read aloud' from happening. Not sure why enabling light flow in accessibility is necessary in the first place but glad it seems to have fixed things.
I checked all settings am I doing something wrong or has google taken this feature out?
First off, how many of these threads to we need? Seen at least 10 in the last few days.
Second of all, it still works for me. Google has not taken this feature out.
I don't even see it in my settings anymore it just disappeared.

Do you use Light flow? I have noticed toggling "Accessibility" off and on when Light flow glitches out for me, or using Swype seems to kill hotword detection. Rebooting always seems to bring it back though
Mine disappeared when I enabled the ICS Google search widget in Nova...
as the title states, I would like to know if there is away that I am not seeing to disable the screen illuminating when I receive a notification (sms, email.. etc)
I don't like this feature, the phone already tells me via audio notification that I have received a message and I think it is a battery drainer (not matter how minuscule) I'd like to have some control over this...
With my screen off, it lights up when I receive a message and I would like to disable this function. I already have LED notification turned off...
I hope I was able to communicate my desire
Thanks in advance for your help

Oops, you got a free thanks. The way I dealt with it was to install Handcent and then disable the stock messaging application. But I'm on US Cellular and I'm not sure how much different our phones are. Handcent has MANY more features than the stock application as a perk also.

That is an alternative yes. I would like to keep the stock app though because it's been my experience to have lots of problems with third party messaging apps. For example, I am unable to use MightText while using some third party apps. Sometimes the apps update and have FC closes afterwards.
If you didn't mean to give me a thanks, can't you take it back... I mean if you really wanted too, don't get me wrong, I'll take all the thanks I can get!
I'd also be interested in this..I find it super anoying.
Edit: Gave in and installed Go SMS with a GSIII theme.
here's a solution if anyone is still looking for one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840420
I'm trying to get this AT&T SGS3 set up for my wife (mostly stock firmware), and she wants something that has both repeating SMS notifications and the ability to have different notification tones for different people sending her messages. IT appears that "SMS Popup" supports this (but still allows her to use the default SMS app for normal reading and composing.)
However, I'm finding that the LED doesn't seem to work well with the application: No matter what "blink rate" I set, the LED will stay steady on. Even a custom blink rate of "1000ms on, 5000ms off" results in a steady, always on LED. As well, it seems impossible to get the LED color configured to something reasonable. For example, I configure magenta, and I get yellow. I configure yellow and I get white. I configure red and I get a bright cyan.
(When I configure SMS popup on the international SGS3 (i9300), the LED options work fine.)
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Gary
Not a solution, but it's not just you. Essentially, Samsung buggered up the implementation of the LED on the North American S3 and 3rd party devs are having a heck of a time working around it.

Has anyone managed to work around it yet? The source for SMS popup is GPL'd, so it'd be mostly trivial for me to patch in a fix (assuming a fix was known.)
If not, I guess I'll have to spend some time this weekend examining the LED support in the kernel and trying to reverse engineer whatever samsung did.
Fyi , the AT&T OTA that came out today changes the notification light to blink instead of being solid-on.

I'm confused... the stock firmware (from before this update) would blink on "stock" notifications (such as email, SMS, etc), and stay steady on the charging LED.
The issue, it seems, is with 3rd party apps that try to use the LED (such as SMS Popup) - in that case, the LED would get stuck ON.
Are you saying that this update resolves the stock on for 3rd party apps?
Gary
Use Liteflow. It will do everything you mention and it works correctly with the LED.

I'd prefer to avoid lightflow (and other system-wide notification handlers)... I've seen too many issues with it related to wakelocks.
(I know some people disagree with me about lightflow. That's nice and we are entitled to disagree on that, but please don't drag this thread into a discussion on the merits of lightflow, if it does or doesn't have issues, etc.)
Take care

To answer my own question, the OTA (LH9) does seem to resolve any LED issues from 3rd party apps... both blinking issues AND color issues.
If you are willing to dump the stock sms ap. It seems that after this latest firmware update, in Handcent sms the colors now work correctly. Also I am able to get some different blink rates. I have not tried many though.

I've been using it since S3 till Note 2 now that don't feel it drains too much battery. Anyway, the battery life is very good on Note2.
I tried installing it but upon setting it up, it said it can't be activated together with the Air-view function...therefore I have uninstalled it.
Can anyone please confirm whether we can use both Light Flow together with Air-view?
Damn yeah i get the air view and light flow issue too
Maybe someone will make an alternative

Light control works.
I don't know why, but it turns the TalkBack.accessbility option on and off during install,
which forces you to turn air view off.
However, it doesn't actually NEED talkback.
I turned airview on after the install finished, and was able to change my my notification colors (changed missed call from red to purple)
- Frank
I get the spoken "Folder open" or "Folder closed" when using light flow and opening folders. Talkback is disabled and it doesn't do this with any other features.
Only fix was to disable Light flow which eliminated the problem.
Install liteflow then go in to settings & turn Air-view back on...Now both work fine
Perhaps you can try Light Manager which can be downloaded from Google Play.

The battery killing is specific to some versions of the s3 where we work around some really bad bugs in the led driver.
It shouldn't affect the note 2 though.
At the moment the airview suggestion of switching back on is the best I know of (I had that reported from a beta tester with a note 2) - there's a reference to that on our support page - http://www.folioflow.com/ff/page/website/lightflow/pageId/2171
The main issues I'm aware of are the talkback and swype issues. I've offered me help to swype as they are aware it's an issue with their app and have recreated the issue themselves.
I've sent some code to Samsung regarding the talkback "folders open" issue and can recreate it with any app that uses accessibility services.

First of all, you MUST pop up a notification during install that air view can immmediately turned on after install.
I've seen several people post that when they saw the 'turn off air view' box, they immediately aborted the install and get a refund.
You must let them know, before it happens, that this is (for now) normal.
Secondly, the bug implies that the talkback bug is an ICS issue, so I'm not sure why any Note II users are having the problem.
(I don't have this problem, although I'm not exactly sure what folder people are opening to trigger the problem. App folder?)
- Frank
For me, it happens any time I open a folder on a homescreen.
Sent from my GNex using smoke signals.
Also happens if you slide your finger on the homescreen page dots. You get "talked back" the page number.
Swype-alike "Continuous Typing" in Samsung Keyboard also gets disabled if you use any kind of accessibility apps.
I was actually so frustrated with the talk back feature I uninstalled this app. I might install it again.
Dev. you should really consider telling people this, because I'm sure there are others who were like me and said "oh no! Talk back is working even though I turned it off" and just uninstalled it.
It happened to me on my home screen folders.
So does anyone notice a battery drain on their devices while using this app? Of course I'm referring to people who have a Note 2.
EDIT: Nope, I turned Air View back on and I'm still getting that annoying folder open and folder closed voice. I even turned on talk back and turned it back off! haha. I have to uninstall this until this issue gets fixed. On my home screen I use folders all the time, and it's rather annoying to hear.
I've removed talkback and changed airview back on and is now working 100%. Not sure does it drain battery since have used it from start. I get 6-8hrs screen on time. Gotta love Bright Pink and Cyan.
