I don't want to flash a custom rom but all this talk about the vast improvements in 4.0.3 are making me wonder what the hold up is in rolling it out to Galaxy Nexus owners. At least GSM owners like myself, there aren't any carrier approvals required for that.

Not really sure what the hold up is. I too want the pure stock version of 4.0.3, don't like a lot of customizations are whatnot. Hopefully it will come soon.
I have used Bugless Beast, which is pretty much AOSP with very minor changes and fixes.
I held out for about two weeks lol.
Finally caved, I flashed AOKP and Franco's Kernel. Been loving it ever since I'll never go back to stock.

My guess is 4.0.3 won't be released and google will push out 4.0.4 w the multi touch bug fixed.
There's also a browser crash bug w 4.0.3 that I hope google fixes as well.
There is always something coming that's the best rom in the world it seems

I never experience browser crash on ics, be it on nexus s or gnex.
When they have sorted out the bugs with the battery life then I think 4.0.3 will be released.

Go to androidandme mobile site or nytimes mobile site and move around and view a couple of articles. The browser will crash soon afterwards.
It has to do with the ads. If you use an ad blocker the crashes disappear.

Lucky. My stock GN browser is buggy as all get out. A crash once a day? Switched to Dolphin solved the problem.
I agree though. It's 2012. Let's go with 4.03. I won't root or change. Stock only.

If they can improve battery life by at least 25% then I'll be happy.
What other improvement are we to expect with 4.0.3 / 4.0.4?

That's not even realistic. The LTE version is going to have crappy battery life almost by default. My GSM Nexus gets great battery life.

Nothing wrong with the battery life on the LTE version, you just have to turn off LTE
But then you get not so fast speeds. Verizon 3g maxes out around 3mbps. But most don't see even that. Though I do have to say Verizon 3g handles congestion better.

Are u on 4.0.3? Only happens w that version.
I've been hesitant to root, because the rooting process gives me a panic attack and I don't want to have to re-do it after a push to 4.0.3 happens. I take it there's no assumption yet as to when a push upgrade is due to happen?
I'm hesitant mainly because I'd have to wipe and because Google Wallet is working perfectly right now and I don't want to mess with it.

I had perfectly working google wallet also on 4.0.2 stock and thought I will just wait out till Google releases official 4.0.3. But then I got tired n flashed aokp.n believe me, it's like my phone is freaking fast .if you thought that 4.0.2 is smooth seriously you gotta try 4.0.3.its mind numbing. Plus Franco's kernel.
PS-i like all the customizations of aokp...except the bootanination.n wallet works.

Hey. After I flash a new rom, the phone is super quick and respones very well. Buy after a few days, it starts to get laggy. When I am presaing the soft keys it takes a couple of seconds to respond, apps loading times can reach about 20 seconds, contacts loading too. I am using the GSM Gnex with CNA 3.8 rom and franco kernel r298. The lags occurred with XenonHD too. Dont get me wrong, I am not complaining about the developers, I am just trying to figure out if I am doing something wrong.

Are you rebooting your phone or just leaving it on for weeks at a time?
I remember someone saying it has to do with the zram optimizations in roms and kernels. at first it makes things faster and the the idea implemented is good in theory but over time it makes things unbearably slow. i dont know the technical reasons for this, someone with more knowledge than me may be able to explain it.

Obviously downloading from the Play Store is using system resources (RAM, a % of the processor etc.) so a slow down is to be expected.
The phone restarting itself =/= to rebooting it regularly. Just like your computer you shouldn't leave it running 24/7. Sometimes you just need to give your phone a restart.
I think the lags are related to the heatcof the Gnex. Maybe the my cheap case makes it worse. I will check without case so it have more contact with the air. I will report the results.

I've noticed the same lag after few days. It's really frustrating to see your phone very fast and then kind of choppy....

It looks almost like a memory leak. (That was a big problem on exynos devices runing cm10). It happened to me today (latest nightly cm10), Once my free ram was less than 100 mb the phone became noticeably less responsive.
Sane here!!! Thought it was just me... lol. I was running black bean baked! I love it but became super laggy! Almost threw it across my room lol. But just clashed slim bean and hope its bad ROM coding :-/.

I understand that custom roms do have great features but let me tell you something, after I switched from the S3 I decided not to flash any rom, I just used the nexus toolkit to root it and of course install franco kernel, since then the experience has been amazing, I'm just very careful with the apps I install, cheers!

I've experienced the same on about every JB setup I've tried. A reboot tends to purge assets and get me truckin' again for several days though.
I recommend keeping it stock you people, stock almost never lags unless u use the google+ app

Yup u are right. Many people used to tell that Franco kernel is the best and stuff but even that after using for a few days gets slow whereas in stock all that crap doesn't happen. I still use Franco because games work smoother on it compared to stock. Even the battery life is inconsistent. Just try stock after weeks and Franco right after a reboot still stock will be overall faster and smoother.

Yeah, that the point. I want to change the screen color settings... Franco's kernel allows you to do that.
I am going to change to team EOS rom and check it for a few days. If I have problems with that one I am going back to stock rom.
Me again.
I posted a few hours ago about a problem with my SMS and text messages not being sent if they were over 160 characters. After receiving help about that and since I'm trying to hit my 10 post mark, I figured I'd make another thread about the other problem I'm having.
So I'm running LiquidSmooth JellyBean 4.2.1 Beta 2 on my Sprint Galaxy S3 and I love it. The only problem I am having is that my headset, a basic Skull Candy headset with the button to stop/play music, mute/unmute calls and also fast forward and rewind music does not seem to be working. I mean I can hear music through them fine and the mic works fine for calls, but the button no longer works on this custom ROM. It was working fine on 4.1.1 stock.
Anyone else have this issue? Any help would be appreciated. It's not a big deal but it is nice being able to cut off my music without even taking out my phone.
Its most likely because JB 4.2 is still in development and doesn't have all the hardware features of the stock ROM built in yet
Definitely sounds like this is the issue since you said you had no problems on a TW rom

Noup. Im using the OFFICIAL for Gnex MAGURO, build by Xiaomi (The one found HERE). Im flashing 3.1.11, which is the latest according to that site. Using TWRP to flash. Might been a bad download, if you insist that its working fine for you, but i did a little research, and some people were complaining about the same bug, so i thought that it was the rom, not me.
EDIT: Just checked, and i highly doubt its a bad download because MD5 matchs with the one posted on the site.

Ok, got MIUI to work. Seems like its not a good idea to flash the ROM and GAPPs on the same go. I had to flash rom, boot the phone, set it up, go to recovery again, and flash gapps, after that, everything seems to be working fine. Even the browser. Seems like that was the key.

Samsung feels 4.1.2 is pretty much bug free. Now they are struggling to keep up with the booms in technology and software as well. New versions of Android are coming out quicker than Sammy's new phones. Why put out a 4.2.2 when 4.3 is out? So now they concentrate on getting out new phones with 4.3 on it and then they start working on updates to the dozens of existing models. 4.3 was announced as coming to the S3 BUT that will be the international first then US months later depending on carriers.
What is in 4.2.2 that you MUST have? There are 4.3 AOSP ROMs all over if you want that.

It doesn't seem like the newer versions of Android add too much more function than 4.1.2. As far as looks, their are plenty of ways to theme your phone to make it look like whatever you like

Going to have to agree with this. 4.3 even on the best ROMs are alphas at best.
The only semi stable AOSP/CM ROMs are 4.2.2 and under.
And all AOSP/CM ROMs since have a weird bug with Instagram or third party apps and their front facing camera.

Since posting this thread I've used CM10.2 Nightlies and also ParanoidAndroid 3.99 RC2.. I can honestly say (and this is of course my own opinion and result) that CM has been a better experience. I use my phone a bunch for little things, internet, text messaging, FBing, Pictures, XDA, games, etc and haven't had any problems with CM.. Only reason I switched back from PA to CM was honestly only that Candy Crush wasn't compatible with PA (and I barely play CC anymore lol).. I've just lost my ability to use Triangle Away for some reason.. It was working on the CM10.2 09/07 nightly, flashed PA and didn't work. Then flashed back to CM but the 09/26 and still not working, flashed the new kernel and TA still gets stuck at Detecting Packages.. Wish someone would tell me why.. I've posted in like 5 different places and nobody responds

My biggest issues are surrounding bluetooth - I experience issues related to pops when switching songs - almost sounds like a non-flushed buffer, and sometimes major lag... almost like the app has crashed, but it doesn't... it comes back. This was on SlimBean 4.3...
I haen't tried CM or the others primarily because I reverted to 4.1.2 for stability.
My best bet on Triangle Away is to run it just before you boot into download mode... (that SHOULD work...) Samsung introduced stuff back when 4.0 came out where the triangle would get re-set whenever you'd boot into an altered recovery...
