GT-N7100 Virtual Buttons? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I will be receiving a Note II in the mail today and I was thinking of putting CM10 on it but I am wondering, is it possible to just disable the capativie buttons and use the native Android virtual buttons?

You can enable onscreen buttons in CM10 i think, so yes about the virtual keys, but i dont know how to disable the hardware buttons (i mean i dont know an app for that, you could mod it though)
But why do you even want to disable them? I cant live without hardware keys, especially because software ones would steal place of the note2's precious display :x

I know with CM10 you can use the virtual keys and disable the capasitive, but just not sure with the stock ROM if you can.

I highly doubt you can do it with the stock rom, its a special thing in CM10, i only used Stock for like 10minutes, then flashed MIUI *hehe* (cant live without MIUI)
PS: Im actually sure you cant do it in stock.

Ah well. It is what I figured. I'm not into TouchWiz but I wanted to try it out for awhile, but I can not stand the capasitive buttons.

[Q] Disable Capacitive Buttons (Q)

Hello Brochachos from all over the world! I was wondering if there was any way to turn off capacitive buttons fully and just use the on-screen soft keys? That would be awesome. Thank you for your insight and help on this fellow xda members! <3 kse91holydiver

I had a mod for the nexus s that disabled the keys, I could adapt it to this phone probably. Using cm9 i'm guessing?
No, actually I'm using AOKP, does that change the difficulty in adapting it?
NVM I looked at your mod and adapted it myself, no flash zip necessary. For anyone else who wants to know you delete the text in /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl and then save changes in a root explorer app.
Is there any trick to turning the lights off on cm9?

Yeah I don't want to completely disable the keys themselves, I just want to turn the annoying, battery-wasting backlight off. The CM9 setting to do so does not work.

I want to know this too.
This was made by T.C.P. But I use it on CM9 Codename and AOKP. Turns off the lights but they still work. Flash in recovery and enjoy.

Could I just push this file somewhere in the system? What's the path?

/system/lib/hw/
Push it there and reboot
Some ICS roms like codename have a "lights.sph-d710.so" file so push the the lights.exynos4.so and delete the d710 one then reboot (if that's the case).

It seems once the d710 file is deleted the brigbtness goes crazy and the widget for brightness stops working, anyone else?

That's why I said make sure you add the lights.exynos4.so after you delete the d710 file and then reboot.
Don't forget to set permissions before your reboot.
Why would you ever want on screen buttons instead. Phone screens are small as is, and youre choosing to use a portion of it to be dedicated to buttons you already have? Not to mention theyre not as responsive as capacitive buttons and theyre bound to get in the way sooo much more. I think its the worst part of ics, and Ill be dissapointed if the s3 ships without capacitive buttons, even if it does make ot look cooler. And the removal of search and menu is downright retarded
The .so file does indeed work. Thanks so much for the workaround.
Also on the general subject I would much prefer fewer buttons on my mobile device. My HP laptop has capacitive buttons and they are the cause of many headaches. Even the menu button on my E4GT sporadically activates on its own from time to time. Google did it right with ICS and the Galaxy Nexus. The keys are there only when you need them and auto-hide when you don't meaning the screen real-estate is not as much of an issue as one might think.

If they dissapear its rare. And that portion of the screen is blacked out anyways. Ive never had an issue with my capacitive buttons.

I am trying to do it because my hardware buttons randomly press themselves making the phone difficult to use. I get where you are coming from though.
I'm searching around trying to fix my phantom search button issue but don't want to flash a different rom or start a new thread... I'm rooted with framaroot (great system, so easy to do), have busy box, root browser- virgin mobile S2 SPH-D710, same as the Epic 4G touch. I found a thread in another forum talking about editing the button to simply no longer have a task, but in regards to the menu button and not the search button which is the one that is giving me the phantom issue. Thread is here:
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...th-ics-jb-phantom-menu-keypress-easy-fix.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203059
Anyone know how to go about deleting the functionality of the search button?
I want to take this approach as it seems the only way short of a new/referb or hunting down a custom rom where the software somehow fixes the issue via programming. I did have virgin send me a referb and it had the same issue lol, so working on fixing it the xda way haha. For those with the same issue and wondering what is causing it, IMO the best explanation I found was from another forum, it seems to be hardware, where a screen replacement or capacitor addition is the fix because some S2s had bad quality control and a magnetic shield was not installed correctly and when the cell antenna is in a low reception area, it increases power and that causes an inductive voltage situation or some other power issue and makes the handset think the menu or search button is pressed. I found some who feel that even though it's a hardware issue, of course the software could be set to prevent the cell antenna from 'juicing up' in low reception areas.

Soft keys??

Is there any way, or app that I can use to alert me via soft keys when new text messages arrive?
Thanks in advance

Of course, assuming you are on gingerbread and have a kernel that supports BLN.
app is BLN control
I am on ICS running the IML74K_Ics_Perfection II rom. I tried to install the Synergy kernel but ended up with a boot loop. Any ideas on how to remedy this issue or point me in the correct way.

Bud, you can't run gingerbread kernels on ICS. Which also means you can't have softkey notification on ICS. Flash aN ICS kernel and you'll be fixed.
From what I recall synergy is a gb kernel. U cannot use a gb kernel with an ics rom. Until source code is released, u have to pick. Either no ics, and bln control works, or use ics and forgo bln until source comes out
Thanks!
You can try an app called Noled, it doesnt use softkeys though. It uses the screen to light up icons.

I use BLN pro (ofcourse with a compatible kernel and a GB rom).
It's pretty neat and can be configured for your sofkeys to blink at a custom rate(I set mine at half a second off and on) so it looks like regular leds. Some iphone users think its pretty legit!
Only reason I have yet to switch to ICS is because of no BLN support, no OC and no DOCK audio

Jelly Bean ROM with Virtual Buttons?

I am looking for a rom with Virtual Buttons navigational buttons ( like Nexus 7 ). My phone buttons do not work anymore and need this work around.
I am currently running Jellyzeus with turbo kernel.
I edited framework-res.apk myself to enable it but I did not work. I think it is disable elsewhere in the ROM somehow.
It's called navigation bar, it should be available in FXP CM10 rom. Make sure you flash the boot.img from FXP152 to make it bootable.
Various other JB roms have it.

This ROM is awesome. Its exactly what I was looking for. I like it so much Im thinking about installing it on my nexus 7!
Now if I can just find out how to reassign the wake buttons. Ex. Wake the phone from sleep using any of the four buttons on the front of the phone.
On iPhone there is an app called activator, which you can assign different functions to any button or gesture. I am looking for something like that. Nothing Iev downloaded from Play store works, from what I have read it is more of a ROM feature than anything.
Gesture control might work but I don't know if it has a wake feature

Yep I think its great! There is a paid app on market that let's you wake your phone by shaking it here link https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS53aWxkcm9pZC53YWtlLnVwLnNjcmVlbiJd it's not free but gives you a 15min trial to see if works with your phone don't know if that's any good
Yeah I already have something like that for my tablet. That is not going to work for me because I walk alot at work and run at the gym. I dont want to have to remember to turn it on and off.
Simply, I just want all buttons to act like the "home" button on the lock screen.
This is really bugging me now. You would think that this is not hard to do and that I am not the first person to want this.

Anyone know how to swap the "recents" and the "back" button?

Thanks if anyone can help!

Don't think there's a way to natively change that. Your best bet is to root and check out Xposed Modules (if they even exist yet, I'm not sure).
Usually that's the only way to do stuff like that. Or custom ROMs with such settings built-in. I'm looking forward to being able to add another "option's" button on the nav bar. Sucks by default its usually up top.

Used to the Samsung way of doing it? But there's no way to do it stock.
swap recent and back button is inside gravity box. As is all the other must haves. To me personally that is.
I'm waiting patiently for exposed, it'll be a while.> http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed
Came from an s6. I do think the Samsung placement is better since I'm right-handed and use one hand a lot, so the back key on the right is a perfect placement. You do get used it though.

Volume Buttons to change Songs on Stock

Hello, before I flash back to stock ROM, I wanted to know if there was a way to change song tracks while the screen is off using the volume buttons. I posted a screenshot of the option that I'm talking about that is on the latest release of purenexus. Thank you in advance!
I don't think that function is built into stock. There is an app called Pocket Skip Track but it's made for Power Amp, although it apparently does work with some other music players. If that feature is a dealbreaker you might want to stay on PureNexus.

Yeah I'm well aware that it isn't a feature on stock Android. And I might have to give it a try cause I already pulled the trigger with going back to stock for now
