Don't think there's a way to natively change that. Your best bet is to root and check out Xposed Modules (if they even exist yet, I'm not sure).
Usually that's the only way to do stuff like that. Or custom ROMs with such settings built-in. I'm looking forward to being able to add another "option's" button on the nav bar. Sucks by default its usually up top.

Used to the Samsung way of doing it? But there's no way to do it stock.
swap recent and back button is inside gravity box. As is all the other must haves. To me personally that is.
I'm waiting patiently for exposed, it'll be a while.> http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed
Came from an s6. I do think the Samsung placement is better since I'm right-handed and use one hand a lot, so the back key on the right is a perfect placement. You do get used it though.

hi all,
i've had my defy a couple of months now and i'm loving it.
just about the only thing i dislike about it is, i often accidently press the search key on the bottom right of the phone as i normally hold it with my right hand.
is there any way to disable the key? i know there's no inbuild way of doing it, so i guess we'd be looking at a hack.
i never use it, so wouldn't miss it at all.

If your phone has rooted, you can uninstall or remove the GoogleQuickSearchBox from the system/app. It helps.
If you are not sure how to do it, send me a PM.
which search key ?

thanks - i've now done that. only works on the homescreen but that's where it's most annoying, so a big help.

Hm. It should work globally not just on the home screen. Look around in you system/app and if you find a QuickSearchBox.apk remove it as well!
hi,
can't seem to find a solution to this via search since not sure what to call it.
this screen when the phone rings and you have go grab that thing in the middle and slide it in one direction or the other.....how do i replace it with almost anything else? can't stand it. at least if you could see before you grab that center thing which direction you are supposed to pull the thing.
i'm rooted and using liquid rom.
thanks
Uhh. Once you do it once, you know which way to go. Don't see the issue there lol. Do you get fumbled by the stock lockscreen too? Forget which way is camera and which way is unlock? Cmon...
I'm sure there are ways to replace it.
anyone helpful out there?

What exactly are you looking for it to do?
Gingerbread had slide right to answer, slide left to effectively stop the ringer and send the caller to voicemail.
ICS has the exact same functionality, and looks much more polished doing so in my opinion.
But I am curious, what is it you want to happen/see?
basically looking for just buttons to push...nothing to slide.
a couple things about me that the first smart*** "helper" didn't care to take into consideration.. just insult me...and thank you for that by the way! 1) i don't get very many calls. i mostly just use this thing as a computer so when i do get a call i don't always remember very well which way i will need to pull that slider and 2) i have 2 conditions in my hands which don't always allow me to "hang onto" that slider thing.
since, i found an app called "EZ button" which has 3 buttons that are displayed on screen when the phone rings. you either push the buttons or hold for a couple seconds. SO FAR...it seems to work in ICS/Liquid though it doesn't really mention being ICS compatible.
i will try out ACG as the prior poster metioned. i tried initially but it didn't appreciate that i have ads blocked so i have to edit the hosts file....in time.

EZ Answer looks like it does what you want it to do and more. It incorporates all of the other 'EZ' applications that cost 99 cents into one for I guess a good deal of $1.99.
EZTouch on its own looks like the standalone product you are looking for.
and
EZButton seems like another standalone product that does what you want to do, but also incorporates your volume buttons to answer by speaker or regularly.
Now whether each work for ICS and particularly this phone, I don't know. I see that you already tried 'EZ Button' so I'm guessing all will work, but I'm not 100% on that.
Good Luck.
I am looking for a rom with Virtual Buttons navigational buttons ( like Nexus 7 ). My phone buttons do not work anymore and need this work around.
I am currently running Jellyzeus with turbo kernel.
I edited framework-res.apk myself to enable it but I did not work. I think it is disable elsewhere in the ROM somehow.
It's called navigation bar, it should be available in FXP CM10 rom. Make sure you flash the boot.img from FXP152 to make it bootable.
Various other JB roms have it.

This ROM is awesome. Its exactly what I was looking for. I like it so much Im thinking about installing it on my nexus 7!
Now if I can just find out how to reassign the wake buttons. Ex. Wake the phone from sleep using any of the four buttons on the front of the phone.
On iPhone there is an app called activator, which you can assign different functions to any button or gesture. I am looking for something like that. Nothing Iev downloaded from Play store works, from what I have read it is more of a ROM feature than anything.
Gesture control might work but I don't know if it has a wake feature

Yep I think its great! There is a paid app on market that let's you wake your phone by shaking it here link https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS53aWxkcm9pZC53YWtlLnVwLnNjcmVlbiJd it's not free but gives you a 15min trial to see if works with your phone don't know if that's any good
Yeah I already have something like that for my tablet. That is not going to work for me because I walk alot at work and run at the gym. I dont want to have to remember to turn it on and off.
Simply, I just want all buttons to act like the "home" button on the lock screen.
This is really bugging me now. You would think that this is not hard to do and that I am not the first person to want this.
Hi all,
I've looked everywhere and I can't be the only one who wants this.....
Is there not a way to swap the placement of the back key ala LG G2? It's driving me nuts and is the only thing that is keeping this phone from being perfect (for me) can ANYONE please lend a helping hand?
Thanks

This was the first thing I noticed coming form the LG G2 as well, and haven't found a way yet. Why would they put the back button all the way to the left, it is driving me crazy as it is the most used button!

auto hide soft key's works, but is there any way to use it without the auto-hide/quick bar stuff?
I can't believe there isn't a way to create the same thing that LG has done for this phone. All manufactures should offer this. It's not like HTC didn't "borrow" the knock feature so this shouldn't be a stretch....
I don't get it. I've used Android for years and this is how it is on every device other than Samsung phones. I would just get used to it. Odds are you'll have to anyway in the future.

Never!!!! Lol, I hate that its on the left side. I hold my phone mostly in my right hand and hate how I now need to stretch my hand across to back arrow. This is one area I really do believe Samsung got it right. It's more natural on the right side of the phone. Even if you strongly disagree , at least do what LG has done and give me the option to make it how I want it. If I want to be told how something should be without the option to change it I may as well have a iPhone!

I don't think this app allows you to change the placement of the soft keys does it? I don't see anything in the description that implies that, more meant to just hide the keys.

Yeah, it replaces the nav bar and let's you choose between a bunch of other different themed nav bars. I just can't get it to work without its quickbar feature/autohide.
With Samsung's recent devices they have decided to change the "Menu" button on the lower lefthand side of the phone to a "Recent Apps" button. I was wondering if it were at all possible to get this back to the "Settings" button instead of having to longpress it. Would it say, be possible to reverse them?
I am thinking any sort of change like this is going to require root and then someone to develop it.
Opinions? Does it bother anyone else?
It doesn't bother me since I also have a Tab S and this is how it is.
To fix this you 'll have to root, and you can hack this yourself.
This should get you started while your waiting.....

Ahh, keymapping. It's going to require a tiny bit of customizing. Sweet! Thanks so much Can't wait to jump in when we get root!
In the meantime, the menu functionality is still there...just long press the left button...took a while to get used to.
