it's rooted and so I can't do OTA updates because it has modified software
is there a way I can get the update so I can use multiview/multiwindow on my phone without flashing a rom?

I don't believe being rooted by itself will prevent OTA updates. The update will most likely make you rooted again though. But their is no update available yet, and may not be for months.
I would install a custom recovery and flash a custom ROM. That way you get a better multi-window (that works with all apps), no bloat and improved battery life.
+1 for rooting & custom/ported rom. It's not as scary as it seems as long as you study and READ. Check & doublecheck that is compatible with i317. The are countless advantages to it over keeping stock (if you don't like what stock has to offer) PLUS (here is the best part) you can brag that you "got rid of that att s*$&" and hacked your phone....People are usually pretty impressed. Lol) Seriously though just take the leap. You'll be glad you did!

Install Clean ROM. Everything works great including multi-view
just new to android..... i would like to know what is the different between the clean rom and the other roms, like Jedi and hybirds?
I have only tried Jedi x6 rom. Don't want to try any other rom because this one seems to cover all the bases and is rock solid. I've heard nothing but good things about clean rom though so probably can't go wrong with either. Jedi is sick though. And for what it's worth it is also pretty clean. If someone handed me this phone I would not know there was a rom on it other than the upgrades, I.e., multi window, extra toggles, etc. Good luck with whatever you choose. By the way everyone on Jedi thread is extremely helpful and patient.

Thanks topshelf95. I am new here, that's why I ca'tn post in the developer forum for any questions about X6. I am using X3.3 now and tried X6 but converted back to X3.3 cos I can't install any other language for handwriting for X6. If I know how to fix that, I will switch to X6 for sure.

Hi all,
I'm still on the fence about rooting my t989 and so I'm looking for advice. I got the 2.3.6 update and I really want ICS but I'm willing to wait for it though. Also, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to risks such as rooting due to warranties, bricking, and losing functionality. However, I'll be traveling for a while and tethering could be handy and titanium backup has always been attractive to me. But what happens if ICS comes out? I think I loose root if I update OTA, but I should be able to get root again. I'm not a big fan of real 3rd party software because I don't want to work with bugs so if I got a new ROM, it may only be CM9 or similar as reliability is important to me. And then I don't want a new ROM if it doesn't use the Linux Kernel since Ubuntu is developing that OS to share that Kernel. Do I even need a new ROM? I think touchwiz is fine. Pages of apps are better than scrolling through them IMO.
So any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks!
Root it unless you plan on running stock ics. Chances are the ota will be releases here before it hits your phone we have a couple really nice ics roms right now. Don't know what your waiting for lol

I was rooted however I dropped my phone last week and had to get a replacement now I am just gonna wait for ICS to drop...
It's all good with me, at least I have my wifi calling and no delay or echo while taking my minibath.
Rooted mine several weeks ago. Tired of waiting for official ICS from T-Mobile and Samsung. Once the official version is released, the devs will have a rooted version available for flashing so you won't have to un-root.

+1. Its easy to unroot and return to stock if need be. Till then we have fully functional daily driver ics roms already so what are you waiting for? Take control of your device. That's why you went with android over iOS and wp7 in the first place anyway isnt it?

This is the thread i followed to root. Very simple instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 but yeah same method one has pics one dont.
Edit: Unrooting the phone is the same process as rooting except you flash a different file to the phone.
My suggestion is to root. But don't sweat CM9 it is pretty buggy right now because its still beta and isn't officially supported on our phones. But there are plenty of stable ICS roms now and even if u don't care for the few bugs that some may have, there are also some amazing GB rooms out there too.
Just my 2 cents.

But I don't NEED a new ROM do I? Doesn't it just change the GUI? Basically I just want tethering and freeze bloat apps and ads, but a battery life boost would be great. How much does it change under the hood to expand capability? From what I can tell, root apps are the only thing that expands features.
Root and install a rom... If you think your phone is good, with a rom you'll see your phone is just great
Sorry for all my questions but is the kernel held within the ROM? And whatever ROM I choose, I can just flash to different just like that huh? Like it's an easy process?
My brother has Juggernaut, it didn't look any different than touchwiz except for flashy little things like the screen turn off and stuff. I just need function, not flash.
Some roms com with their own kernels, like TDJ's ones... You can flash a rom and then change it for another, but you have to wipe your data for a clean install (there's always the option to backup your info)
Questions go in the Q&A section
ii've had a few phones before that i've installed custom roms on. and all these roms had bugs and made my phone behave slow and weird. i want to try a custom rom on the s3. but i dont want the same issues on it. i got some questions:
1. is stock better than custom rom for the s3?
2. are the custom roms SPECIFICALLY for the s3 bug free?
3. can you suggest which roms are the best for the s3 for battery life?
The rooms out there are great. If you want a stable Rom stick to the roms biased on ICS. I am waiting on official JB until I do a JB Rom

I haven't felt the need to flash a custom ROM, the stock ROM is just fine. One thing I did do is flash the latest Jelly Bean leak, pretty much everything works fine with it.
Often times we convince ourselves we are missing out on something, so we flash this or that rom, or hack, to try to get what we thought we might be missing, but don't see a big difference.
Your question alone shows hesitancy in doing something like flashing a custom rom. If you are worried about losing any features, or introducing some new bug, then stick with a stock rom.
But I highly recommend rooting, removing all the bloat, and at the minimum cleaning up your stock rom.

I recommend to root just for the ad blocking alone. Everything else is just a bonus.
But, the stock roms provide excellent battery life for what they are. The only reason I've rooted is so that I can flash ICS-like themes. Stock TWiz is atrocious-looking.

Odin is the other part of Samsung phones that gives you full control.
I believe zedomax's video gives the link, but I will double check. There is a mobile Odin as well.

1. Define better.
2. Stock isn't bug free. But, there are ROMs with less bugs and ROMs with more. The devs will let you know in the first post.
3. AOSP and AOKP have the best battery. But, remember that the kernel you install plays a role.

Being an admitted flash addict when I switched from my vibrant to the s3 I was only going to root to get rid of bloat and install custom kernel as usual I spend way to much time flashing refreshing and tweaking what is already a great phone out of the box. So it is truly up to the individual. I will say there is great dev support and a lot of familiar faces from my previous device. Good luck in what ever you decide just make sure you do plenty of reading.

If you don't want trouble with apps not working, force closes, and want your samsung s-pen apps to work stick with stock roms. i've had 4.1.2 stock uploaded by teshxx and the thing is smoother than smooth with battery life much better than 4.1.1. I've had the phone since t-mo launch date so I can definitely notice the increase.
You don't have to wipe data either. Just go to recovery and wipe dalvic / cache and you're good to go. Good luck.

Personally, the only reason I would get a custom rom other than samsungs is for the ICS software buttons. Unfortunately, non of them have that option, even the Cyanogen roms. Yes I know we can modify a simple file in the note 2 and I have dont that before but it totally messes up the layout.

I've had nothing but issues with the Jedi roms jedi master has echo problem maybe fixed now as I have not used that in sometime. Jedi X data drops. One of the best thing about custom roms is that you get all the goodies before the updates that sometimes come months later if at all.For me,when I flash a custom rom on my android device it finally becomes mine.Until then you are literally AT&T/Verizon's etc, etc, etc *****.With all that useless crap on your phone that is forced on you without a choice.I personally like to have full control over what is on my device especially because now a days these "toys" cost as much as my laptop.Again,my personal preference. If anything I would try to talk you into re-rooting.LOL

Well...duh...did you honestly expect something better than what you had ? Did you suddenly expect a pushed update from AT&T to offer you a better experiance than those 3 custom roms ? Ease of updates...? I don't get it...Are you actually trying to say relying on a OTA update is easier than actually flashing a new update yourself ? Are you saying waiting and waiting and hoping you get a good ota download and it flashes properly for you..is better than being able to flash and being able to reflash if you actually need it ?
Sorry if I sound rude...but come on...get real would you...You knew the benifits going in and why you rooted it and flashed them..and now you want folks to paint a all rosey picture that a full blown unrooted phone is better than a rooted one running those 3 custom roms...Sorry...it ain't going to happen unless it is coming from someone who didn't install something correctly..or just perfers the bloat and limitations of a stock phone..
If you want & like the stock feel and look...flash Scott's AT&T special edition of his Clean rom..It's debloated..and he has linked to some theming for it..
If you want to go way beyond..wait for Truth's new one out later today or tommorrow..It's fully themed..debloated..has all the latest & greatest available..is fast..and everything works on it..What more could you want...
Personally...I won't ever run a stock phone on purpose after the allowable return time for it..Triangle away has removed the worry of returning it for service..and TWRP has made flashing anything a non issue as well..
It's your phone..run it the way you want to..and be happy..but please don't ask on a developers forum to be convinced to stay on a stock rom..that is just plain lame...IMHO
Mac
I know exactly what you mean and I did feel the same way. Samsung has done an amazing job with this phone. However I have used Jedi, miscoms international roms, cleanrom, now on cleanatt. I have found with a on a custom kernel either persus or the aslyum/note2core. As long as I undervolted and didn't over clock my battery life was a lot better than stock and phone was much quicker and responsive over stock and still had all the great features. We have some awesome devs here for roms and kernels. To me is a very hard choice on what rom to stay on as well as kernel. They are all amazing in there own ways and in my opinion all awesome. I hope no devs flame me I'm just saying they are all very intelligent people at this and I see great things in all there work. AS FOR NOW. I'm on Scotts dedicated at&T. I have took around 40 user and system apps that "I" consider bloat and running persus kernel with the profile zip of 2 offered. My battery life is insane. All day of heavy use and still about 70perecnt left after 8 hours or so. Hope I may have helped you or someone else. I love open source

I have been over clocked to 1800 and above on Jedi and pulled over 2 days off charger with over 8 hours screen time. If you want to stick with stock look, Clean Special build and definitely a kernel. I think updates are "cleanrom" are pretty easy. Named "clean..." for a reason and I feel like it's stock with added benefits. Have fun deciding.

i'm curious if anyone here on XDA prefers being on stock. How come? You don't like roms? root? Just curious on what people that love to stay on stock.
Thanks.

On many phones I have stayed on stock for stability and feature set. In many cases when you go to another rom (especially AOSP) you lose TW features, S-Pen, etc... and in many cases I find not everything is 100%
That said the Note II development is fantastic. Many of the TW based roms give you everything you get with stock, but with more. AOSP you lose the TW feature set but it is amazingly stable and fast with a whole lot of other features.
With my S3 I could not find a single rom that I did not have problems on, but with the Note II I have a harder time deciding WHICH rom to use :good:

I love being on stock dont get me wrong I love the clean roms and root access but since I am coming as a long term iPhone user stock feels amazing and very open to be able to do so much personalizing to the device without having to get into roms is great but I do hate the boatware lol

I agree with this guy. Even with my acer liquid mt when I rooted it and used the leaked gingerbread rom for it, the camera (which i use a lot got messed up and would over expose the pictures to white messes of garbage) and I noticed that after switching back to the normal stock rom with root, the camera would screw the video with red green and blue lines...gross I know...
And plus, just like my old ipod touch 2g (which doesnt work cuz the battery is dead. big surprise CRapple) it looked as normal as it should, but behind the curtain, the device was screaming at me to stop, every little tweak, hack, or anything I could do to the device. (Except install android on it because the project cut off 2Gs)
So what im saying is, its more fun to screw with the stock app.
Dont like the boatware?
Download a root app uninstaller.
Dont like anything about most devices?
Someone else doesnt like it either, and theyre smarter than you and figured out how to change that.
Root all stock roms.
Maybe one day, they will have an option to come rooted and unlocked.

For me 1st time I'm on stock. I like it and don't see a need for change I did root it. On my SGS the minute I go it I put a rom on it.

I did until I discovered PA battery life. Been 5 hours of fair use, mostly as a media player, connected to data. Battery is still at 84%

I hate stock as soon as another ROM handles all I want. I have a toddler. I need camera function. As soon as cm10 fixed it a week ago. I will never go back to stock again. Only 2 features I miss are page buddy and mhl. Page buddy probably can be modded in though
I love the new features they keep adding instead of stock. And I love a 150meg download instead of 700meg

The lack of mhl in cm or aokp keep me on stock based roms

The same day I purchased my Note 2, I had it rooted and has TWRP installed on it. Day 2 I was flashing roms. I guess I just really like to tinker with my phones, because where was nothing wrong with stock!
C.FLAT, "I'm staying in stock to keep the slow motion video feature. And because CM 10's camera is really glitchy"
If you are that concerned with the camera features working why not flash a ROM like Scrosler's CLEAN ROM ATT SE. It made from ATT base. Completely stock without the bloatware. Everything works perfectly and you are not at the mercy of your carrier to recieve OTA's instead your at Scroslers lol. But seriously, I would much rather get/wait for updates from a DEV here on XDA (Where I can talk directly to the DEV and or people in the thread also using the ROM) instead of waiting for carriers to take forever and you can't directly talk to the team of people who made the Official ROM . So for me if you want stock look and feel with no bloatware and is more customizable than actual stock I would go with a ROM based or made from complete stock base. Just my 2 cents

besides the excellent support miscom. Thanks miscom
I'm on stock cause I got no reason to be otherwise. Everything works as intended, and the so-called "bloatware" is in reality a complete non-issue.
