Is everyone rooted? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Ive had this phone for 2 weeks and unlike other phones where i rooted right away i dont knowh ow important it is to the enjoyment of the phone to have it rooted besides maybe titanium. Is the battery life better? Is it mainly just for bloatware? Thanks for any input

May I ask wether you have lost any functionalty since rooting? From what I have read here some things no not work and some things work worse than they did before rooting. I think this phone is fast enough with bloatware. I'm in no hurry although I would like to swap the drives and to install the lightsaber pen mod

Seriously? I don't know which moron you heard that from but giving yourself the equivalent of admin access on your own phone will not result in any lost functionality. There's really no reason not to root your phone.

I've rooted twice because installing ljc and lk8 and I have had no issues wjat so ever. Free wifi tethering is a must if you have wifi camera or tablet, I love the 4.2 photoshere for my job and amoung other things only on root. My previous evo 4g was stock. This was 1st phone I rooted and im patiently awaiting a cm10/paranoid android port to run hybrid mode on this beast and take full advantage of everything it has to offer. Its like making a super phone. Out of the box its great but after root and accessibility its a super phablet

Ummm..you're very uninformed if you believe rooting results in zero loss of functionality. The big thing that gets broken after rooting being Samsung media hubs. You may be able to restore that functionality with Triangle Away, tho that too can brick your phone.

sir i do believe my media hub work fine

im rooted and everything works like stock but better.

Media Hub works from what I know I've used it to see what it looks like then uninstalled it
I have noticed though for me at least putting a custom rom on makes my battery worse than stock. Custom I get maybe 10 hrs with about a hr screen on and stock rooted I can get close to or a little over a day with about 3-4 hrs screen on time.

I rooted my phone the first day I got it. Its mostly to remove bloat ware but I also like flashing different roms and mods. The phone works perfectly fine not rooted but where is the fun in that?

Root? Not yet since release date. First android phone running stock for close to two months. Superb battery life with no notice lag.
Wanted root:
To see if battery last longer
Wifi tether (not in a hurry, due to tether with other phone)
All apps Multiview Mod (this is probably most important)
Swap internal with External for Games (Second important)
Maybe 4.2 camera
and jump on lastest leak for the wakeup lag fixed.
So far for ME rooting is not super critical but one day when I'm bored I might go ahead.

Rooting will not give you better battery life all its doing is giving you the admin rights like for.instance on a computer you right click and run as administrator same thing.

I know rooting alone will not increase battery life. With rooting you can install custom kernel and possible underclock and undervolt for better battery or install custom rom which dev tweak it for battery sake. I root enough android devices to understand pretty much what rooting does, thanks.

you dont need a cool rom to root your phone, i root my devices just to block ads. I never get an ad on you tube or any websites. I use you tube a lot and the 30 sec. ads are such a waste of time. I also root it so I can save data that i would not be able to save other wise, I root so I can save a stable image of my phone in case something goes south and I need to start over. A year from now I might put on MIUI or CM for something different. Right now stock rooted is the way to go. I love the interface, I have only had HTC phones and this feels nothing like sence.

I'm not rooted. As someone else mentioned I don't see any functionality or features available out there that I want that require it. I have rooted ( and jailbroken ) phones before though, I am familiar with it.
I run Apex launcher instead of TouchWiz, but that doesn't require root. Maybe I'll root once the phone is obsoleted and no more OTA updates are available, if that day comes.

your telling me you like BLOATWARE? you like to not even change a few things like for instance some cool apps that require root access, etc... eventually there will be a kernel for stock purposes but just increases battery life; your telling me you don't even want Better Battery Life?

Any real advantage to rooting at this point? Or what for more roms?

Seems like for the T-mobile GS3 there are only a couple of roms, is there any real advantage to rooting at this point or would you wait?
So far, I kind of like the stock rom, s-voice, motion, etc... I wish the 4G were faster, but I don't know if a new rom or build.prop tweaks would really do anything for this.
There's really not many roms yet because the phone hasn't been out that long.
The goodies are yet to come, but at the moment the main reason to root is to remove all the bloat on the phone.
Personally I'm waiting till my return days expire before I start messing with my phone in case I have to return which I might because I really want the white.

Adfree and wifi tether are the obvious reasons. I usually stick with stock builds with root for those two capabilities. I used to care a lot about being able to use root explorer to remove bloatware, but that was on the Evo OG that had tons of sprint bloant and tiny internal storage. I was constantly having to choose between having apps that didn't support app2sd or having enough free memory for the phone to perform. That whole issue is gone with this phone. I've barely touched the internal storage (though I have pretty much maxed my 16GB microsdhc card, I'm going to have to get a 64GB one to handle all the music/films/podcasts I keep on external storage.

How do I remove the bloatware? I just rooted this past weekend.
The three main reasons I have rooted my devices are rather simple:
Titanium Backup (Being able to backup ANYTHING is a must and should have been standard imo).
WiFi Tether - Stupid that carriers offer unlimited data (Well sprint does) or even limited, yet then even further tell you HOW you can access that data... Sure it can be abused, but there's no reason they should limit it if you've already paid for set megs/month..
Lastly.. Root Explorer..
I use it mostly so i can add ringtones and images directly to the phones standard media folder, in case I swap out SD cards or such.. This isn't so much a big deal anymore with internal memory being standard.. but coming from an OG Evo it was a necessity. With my new S3.. not so much here
I just got the S3 today I am going to use my skyrocket fulltime still because cm9 kicks major ass and make my skyrocket tick at 1.8Ghz but this S3 is beastly with the 2GB ram I fly through everything but I am going to root it after th 14 days and remove all of the crap I dont want but I get why some people dont really wanna flash anything yet ICS is very fluid on the device and the hardware is off the charts especially with Jelly bean out once it gets ported that new OS will use more resources its natural because as it gets better it has to use more space and having 2GB Ram will help......ofcourse if CM9 or CM 10 or whatever its called is released it will be on my phone a soon as its available......

I use Titanium Backup for that. They have a free and paid version.
The free one will allow you to freeze- meaning they will disappear, but not really un install from the device. You won't see them in the app drawer or delete them if you wish.
If you're a flash addict then the paid version is the way to go because it helps you restore all your apps that are backed up with a push of a button after every rom you flash.
Saves a lot of time rather than restoring them one by one, especially if you have a bunch.

honestly, i might not flash a custom ROM on the S3. i used to flash ROMs like crazy on my Skyrocket, but i am actually very pleased with the S3. i am waiting for someone to make a ROM without all the AT&T crap, keep S Voice, and get a little better battery life though lol.
I'd say there are advantages such as root apps and debloated ROMs...which are better for battery and speed.

That is very true, but this phone out the box is pretty good on both categories.
So to me, it's not that important right now.
Usually I root and flash something within the first few days, but I really don't have an urge to at the moment.
I'm happy with the phone right now as it stands. Even with all the bloat.

Exactly how I feal. Ive always rooted and romd pretty much right away for the speed, battery life, and features of custom roms.
Speed: seriously can you get any faster than instant and smooth as butter?
Battery Life: Im getting 4.5-5 hours of screen on time on each charge which is amazing compared to most phones so Im just now getting used to that lol. I know roms can even improve me on that but I dont need it right now.
Features: this phone stock is crammed with features.
I will be rooted before long for root apps and akop when it comes though
My other phone is an iPhone 4. And the battery on that phone is insane! And the gs3 is pretty darn good. I'm a heavy use phone guy, and i have only had to recharge this phone once during the day. Now at night (end of day) the battery is in the low teens but it's still on

Plus i like to control whats on my phone and how it acts. All n all, this phone is awesome, I see no need for a ROM at this time, and i don't think OC is in the cards because this thing is fast. I have all these paid apps that were on my epic 4g that require root to run. i paid for them, so i'm gonna use em.

Why Root the Note 2

I have had several android phones that i have rooted in the past and i can be classified as a flash-a-holic, I love messing with my phone.
With that stated it seems that rooting an flashing new roms is also a headache. I have not found a rom with my evo or s2 that does not have bugs and problems.
So my question is - what are the good reasons to root my Note 2. I feel that if i root and flash it is an never ending process to find the perfect rom that does not exist.
The Note to is wonderful as is - battery is great.
I HATE the puke green battery icon and love what others can do with the setup that i cannot. But its not worth it if the roms have bugs.
I do not like the bloat on the phone and would love to get rid of it but is it worth it?
I would love to see some compelling reasons to root this phone.
Thanks for your input in advance.
I rooted my note for two reasons: I am able to use external ntsf hdd ( now I use ssd without the need to use external power) AND the second reason was to increase audio output volume. I use samsung stock firmware. I am verry pleased.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
The main reason I have mine rooted is the hotspot hack. I have a stock Rom but rooted. That's it. I used to be a flash aholic but I found it tiring to reset my phone every time. I don't want to run the risk of missing something important. I do love to theme though. Just depends on what you want to do.

you don't need to root your phone if you don't have a reason to. don't force it.
personally, i wholly intended to stay pure stock...but then that exynos exploit thing surfaced.
a) it made rooting ridiculously easy
b) it made the phone ridiculously vulnerable.
so i decided to use the patch, but since i'm already there, i just rooted. i have no intentions of flashing custom roms either, though that may change later as roms mature and gain s-pen related applications.
also, titanium backup. i needed to import my game saves.
i'm still in my as-stock-as-possible mood, so I'm still using stock recovery. no nandroids backups sadly, but considering i don't mess with the phone all that much, i don't think i'll need it. TI backup is good enough.
I'm stock rooted for free tether, directory bind, titanium backup, and other tweaks that pop up that I may like as time goes on. It's really easy to do with the toolkit so I figured why not. Intend to stay stock for now, this thing is so amazing already. I got MOGA for Christmas as well as some play store money so I have lots of games and the 11gb available storage is no where near enough without app2sd or the directory bind solution. Could hold 2 maybe 3 big games before now have probably 10-12.

Yep. Other than the bloat, the stock ROM is better than some custom ROMs. I say root (for the options) and run the debloater. When I first picked up this phone I thought about keeping it unrooted. Naturally though I was rooted an hour later.

I started rooting when I had the SG2, and continued when I had the S3. I found myself continuously changing roms, looking for something better, and then ended up missing out on the stock things (like samsungs custom stuff).
I told myself I wouldn't root my Note 2, but the final straw was broken when I was when I stayed at an expensive hotel that wanted $7 an hour for the wifi. I needed the hotspot hack.
I'm on stock rooted, but I guess you can say the main reasons I am rooted are:
Hotspot hack
Google wallet (even though it hasn't worked for me once yet)
I don't mind the bloat nor the ads. I don't download shady apps from Google Play so I don't have advertisement notifications. As for the bloat, some of it is useful and I like it.
My number one reason to ROOT is to control the processors. You think battery life is great, wait till you reduce some of the processing power. I have mine MAX at 1GHz, and it never misses a beat! I'm sure it's due to the quad core and 2GB of RAM that makes it feel just as fast as if i had left it at the stock settings (1.6GHz).
And I am a flash-a-holic, but I like it...makes me feel like I got a new phone every week! hahaha
I haven't rooted mine for the sole reason that its too much of a headache to me with previous phones. Too often I lost messaging and internet and I personally don't have the money to buy a new phone if i break it. It's a personal decision you have to make where the good outweighs the potential bad

Should I rooot???

Hi people, long time xda member and rooter here. Been rooting phones since original G1 on tmobile. But new to samsung high end note 2. Anyway, with no real performance issues on this beast and results like this I was curious as to if rooting would be worth it. What are your thoughts. Some note 2 users say to leave it stock.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
For me, the only reason to root a phone is to get it to do something it doesnt already do. Ask yourself does your phone do everything u need it to do? Is it fast enough for you? Its pointless to ask other people because everyone uses their device differently so everyones opinion is different.
personally i wouldn't. i tried different roms including the all mighty jedi and there was something not right. The stock feel was not there. i love the stock rom, i'm using xona kernel and stock rom which seems to give me such great battery life.
I am surprised that someone claiming to be experienced as you would ask this question.
As said above: You have to ask yourself this question and other questions. Like: Why do you want to root? What am I going to do that needs root? Is root worth it to me?
When it comes to device performance and battery performance improvements with root, it all depends on what you do after rooting. There are some roms that some claim to improve performance. You can freeze or uninstall preinstall apps. Some believe thay improves performance. You can manage background processes, which I feel yields the greatest improvement in performance. All of these need root.
There may be few apps that may help on performance. You can tweak the device for better performance. Don't always need root for these. Needing root or not depends on the app/s and/or tweak/s used.
You can always improve on the performance of any device, including Galaxy Note 2, and battery performance through methods that need root and methods that don't need root. So this question doesn't make sense.
This is more about your knowledge and experience rather than if root will improve performance or not.
Fyi - You should ask the right questions if you want to get the answers that you are looking for.

Generally, starting out, every phone is "buggy" when it comes to custom development.
So far, as development for this device is updated hourly, when it comes to rooting I would ask myself
Does being "up-to-date" really matter? (ie - if no carrier of GNII offers 4.2 or higher, and custom rom flashing is the only way to get to that higher version, then rooting is the only way)
Is AOSP, etc, that much better than GNII's version of TouchWiz?
Is Allshare a deal breaker? I say this because, as of now i dont think there is any viable way to run allshare with a custom recovery/kernal installed (or at least options will be limited)
In summary, stock is what it is, and at least for GNII owners this means GREAT... However, custom does allow you to upgrade your phone without waiting for the carrier to release anything! If nothing else, at least with rooted-stock you Will Not lose any stock functionality (not even allshare)... As you probably already know, at least with root you can back up apps/data etc and in rare cases (like with the Huawei M886 where the carrier sent out a OTA that bricked many devices) you at least won't have to worry about anything bricking your phone

I have the same question. I would like to tether my connection to my tablet while keeping my SN2 rooted and stock

I'll give the 100% best answer here even though someone else will still give their own answer or shoot mine down, lol. 1st, Even though there is no reason to, i overclock my note 2 to 1.92ghz, but like i said there is no reason because you can still tell no difference at all just by overclocking. 2nd, With being rooted you can remove all the crapware in your phone while leaving all the amazing things in your phone you bought it for, say things like the worthless yahoo news and yahoo news daemon and yahoo stocks and yahoo stocks daemon, all junk, there is so much stuff to remove from this phone it's sickening, before rooting my phone constantly used 1.4gb of ram at almost all times, now it uses 492, yes exactly around 492mb's at all times and this is with max home screens all filled with widgets. And yes, with the Jedi rom which i consider the best, your phone will actually run smoother and faster and it is something you will be able to feel and not just feel it in your thoughts like some kind of placebo. But 3rd, right now the biggest and main reason people will root their phone is to make it look how they want, along with also adding in part of the 2nd which is removing the crapware making it the biggest reason to root. I have been able to get into all my phones software, change all the colors from overscroll glow to the backgrounds in every single settings menu and love the way it looks. Look up all the mods to the way you can make certain widgets transparent, change the colors of things like the multi window app menu, use every singe app in multi window which you cant do stock, and see if you like how this will make your phone look and function. But again, a custom rom only, wont make your phone run faster, due to the fact most have so much of their own stuff added in which will take the place of the crapware installed in the phone making it run and feel the same, unlike with the Jedi Rom where you can actually feel the difference, make your phone look nicer and more crisp with different colors and transparent mods, and most importantly, like even without a custom rom and just rooting, remove all the crapware. Like alot of phones out there, most do this to overclock the cpu/gpu, but in this phones case it is not needed due to the fact it runs faster than some peoples computers as is, so you will definetly be rooting your phone for internal cosmetic reasons, and improving speed by removing again, the crapware, lol. It took me almost 3 months to decide to finally root my phone, and when i finally got done with the 5mn process, i was actually like wow, i cant believe i didnt do this in the 1st place and thought about it every day for all this time, and wasted 90 days on a 5mn process, lol.
So are you going to root ??

Too be honest, I'm not sure, but rooting opens up options. I used to Bluetooth tether my note 10.1 to my nexus 4, but haven't found the need to yet, after getting the gn2.

Well, I did root and I'm glad I did. Instant results were immediate. Speed, improved bartery, and tweaks were just some of biggest reasons I see as why to do it. Using jedi x11 and my phone flys like a g6. Lol

[Q] (Q) Questions about rooting and extras

Hi guys I just wanted to know if rooting has some bad sides...
I know what root is and its benefits...
But something doesnt convince me.
I had an GSII and i rotted it, since the rooting and the consistent change of ROMs it has made my battery life worse.
Do you guys think that if I install a modified rom with its own kernel, will it kill my processor or detiororate my battery life?...
Oh Also, Note 2 now or Note 3
No. It shouldn't kill the processor. It could be something else. I mean in your s2. It wouldn't have been processor. You must have killed something else.
About battery. Batteries don't have a very long life. Though today's batteries are very intelligent, the battery life can still get affected depending on the way you use it and charge it.

thanks for your answer.
The Fact that almost every root requires a change in the original kernel makes me sad. I know that most people make the best kernel and rom but they have their own phone and our own phone has different traits...but similar will still cause problems in the long go... so i guess i will stick to no rooting...
hey buddy, if i could only root without modifying kernel it would be great...
You need not to touch kernel to root Note2.
Read post #2 of first line on my signature (N7100 All in one) for different method of root.

You need to regularly clear up battery stats and let the battery drain to 0 and charge it back to 100 percent immediately after that. I resolved some of my battery issues using this technique.
I personally like rooting, so that I can change system apps (bloatware) and some of its properties (resizeable pop up browser, enabling all apps in multiwindow). Overclocking helps too. I am looking forward to root my phone to add mods like PIE controls. Many kernels are actually better than stock when it comes to battery performance. You should make a list of what you want from a ROM as most of them are good.

+1 this. the kernel is not touched on rooting, only when switching it for the roms.
I have rooted mine as soon as i got it. all it does is change the access to the system itself.

really? then thats great! i always needed to use CF-Root and that used different kernel... I hope what you say its right
May be you have some misunderstanding, cf auto root uses kernel to root in s2 and note1.
Note2 is different and have separate recovery partition and need not to replace kernel for changing recovery or inject root.
Previous device doesn't have recovery partition and recovery is binded to kernel so it needs to replace kernel.

Forget about official update for our OGP..

It was a bit frustated when waiting for major update from LG for our lovely G Pro. Although using stock rom is enough, but we need more to optimise the device.
I have been using some kitkat custom roms and decided to use one of the for day to day use. My impression so far is that I wil not go back to stock unless big problem happen to my phone (i.e. when I need to go to service center ?).
So, currently I just waiting for nightly updates or other kitkat new custom rom coming ☺
How about you, guys?

I got an update notification on my stock rooted phone this morning... Still nervous about installing it.
I like AOSP roms, but I find they favor having the latest android base over working out all of the bugs. Which in turn means extra features, but lack stability. I usually find the best Roms for a phone (AOSP or stock mod) match the android base of the stock.

There are not too much options for Korean Variant F240x so unless there comes some stable custom rom had to stick with the stock.
I'm using CM 11 as it has DSP working and most custom ROMs do not.
I still wish LG would release an update for us.
The only problem I have with the ASOP and CM based roms is stability. Some have good battery life, some are feature packed, some have working navigation, some have a hard time locking or issues with sound.
I have yet to find one that just works in all aspects. That's what keeps me going back to stock. Even the G2 V5 had issues for me with signal reception (yes I flashed my modem again) and wifi transfer speeds. The only one that has it all working perfectly is the stock 4.1.2.
I wish we had more customization on that base E980 stock rom kernel tweaks and things like that, but I understand the allure of 4.4 roms versus spending dev time on an outdated build. For me though, having a phone that works consistently is more important. That's not to say there is anything wrong with the ASOP and CM roms, I just haven't found one that just works. Especially when it comes to GPS.
I see that there is the 4.2.2 update from China and I hope a Dev or 2 takes a look at that, or the new Gx that is very similar to the G Pro in hardware. Hopefully there is an option to port that to our G Pro. We'll see. For now, I still enjoy my G Pro and really have no desire to purchase anything else on the market right now.

I got a CWM bootloop......
Oh yeah, another thing I got last time was even I have unrooted (and rooted) stock rom, I could not get OTA update, while my friend got that.
So, still keep using the custom rom which has less bug.

Yep. If you are rooted and have CWM or TWRP recovery installed and you attempt to update you will get stuck in a recovery boot loop. If you are stock, non-rooted, and you install the AT&T update you will NOT be able to root - the update blocks rooting. IMHO there is nothing of value in the AT&T update. Wherever you are, stay there.

is it an auto update? I'm on slimbean 4.3. is there a thread about this to disable anything to avoid the update coming through?
I have been running the cm nightlys now for several days it has proven quite stable does a great job multitasking and running game apps. for battery life i downloaded no-frills cpu control and set the cpu to interactive. also has an option to apply on boot so when rebooting the phone it does not return to on demand. Getting 8 to 12 hrs battery life (6 with heavy gaming) and battery recharges in 2 to 4 hrs depending on which charger i use stock or aftermarket. I am very happy with cm11 at this point and been getting daily updates adding features and fixing issues. I also have run the halo harmony rom which works very well but battery life is short 4 to 6 hours heavy gaming have drained battery in 3hrs but halo interface is nice. As far as stock lg filled this thing with way to much bloat ware and even with it all disabled phone is still slower then what it is capable of being. I love they way this device runs on kit kat and will continue to run the cm nightys until they release a stable.
---------- Post added at 12:58 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:50 AM ----------
You should also know no matter which Kit Kat rom you are running you will need to do this from your dialer go to setting and select vibrate on call waiting. None of the roms have a working call waiting ringer yet but the vibrate function does work but must be selected manually after installing rom.
I have been plagued with the muffled in-call mic problem on any AOSP/CM based ROM. That has been the driving factor for staying on stock-based.

I just also realised that what you mentioned is true. What happened to me is not all calling, but some were not a problem. I think an AOSP based rom has better in-call mic than CM, CMIIW.

Thanks for this update.
I was searching high and low to see if the phone mic issue had been resolved. Many others have experienced it but nobody ever followed up.
This was the one issue that was holding this phone back (no matter what ROM). I'm told that the mic volume is useable - with a little bit of cutting in and out. Not 100% perfect yet, but useable.
Well, I already knew the device likely wasn't going to be getting an upgrade. I bought it as a temporary device. I bought a Note III last week, and am in the process of selling my G Pro.
I do miss some features from it, mostly the 5x5 home screen grid and the actually usable universal remote app built-in, but the S-Pen features outweigh them.

I had to use LG FlashTools after a freegee fiasco switching from TWRP to CWM, and ended up on stock 10k. Completely stock, no custom recovery, just 4.1.2 and rooted. If you attempt to install the update already rooted WITHOUT a custom recovery it just gives some message about root detected and reboots back normally.

Settle down, Beavis.
Samsung pretty much does rule the Android smartphone world, despite (or maybe because of) "10gb(wrong) of pure TW crap(also wrong)"
