Just got my Galaxy S3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hows it going guys I just got my Galaxy S3 on Black Friday. I used to come on XDA to download ROMs for my HTC Touch a long time ago. I got out of the custom roms for a while to be safer with my phones and no free time but I decided now that I got my S3 I'd go back to working on my phone a little more and I plan to root my S3 later in the week and probably flashing some ROMs pretty soon. i just wanted to say thanks for all the great resources you guys have spent time putting on this site!

Welcome to the gs3 family. Enjoying your new phone is going to be easy. I android is so sweet compared to the old touch pro phones you may find you only need to root. I I usually end up with with some CM rom but for stock rooted rom is good enough for me for now.

I just got this phone last week and didn't plan on doing anything but rooting it for wifi tether and debloating, but the damn thing kept crashing and freezing every 5 minutes, even before rooting it. It literally didn't run it would just freeze up, so I had to go looking for a different copy of my rom, ended up going with the freegs3 rom due to its ota upgrading and lack of crazy theming and whatnot. Now it's fine. The only thing that really bothers me is the keyboards because I'm a huge fan of the phonepad but the t9 doesn't work. Thanks samsung. It's no htc, but it'll do haha
anyways, good luck

One of the best thing about custom roms is that you get all the goodies before the updates that sometimes come months later if at all.For me,when I flash a custom rom on my android device it finally becomes mine.Until then you are literally AT&T/Verizon's etc, etc, etc *****.With all that useless crap on your phone that is forced on you without a choice.I personally like to have full control over what is on my device especially because now a days these "toys" cost as much as my laptop.Again,my personal preference. If anything I would try to talk you into re-rooting.LOL
p.s I am running cleanRom and it is absolutely the bees knees.

Amen. The battery life, at least in my experience, is unquestionably superior on Jedi vs stock, and i fought hardddd to stay stock like constantly diagnosing wake locks and battery usage.
Or you can flash a different kernel

Well...duh...did you honestly expect something better than what you had ? Did you suddenly expect a pushed update from AT&T to offer you a better experiance than those 3 custom roms ? Ease of updates...? I don't get it...Are you actually trying to say relying on a OTA update is easier than actually flashing a new update yourself ? Are you saying waiting and waiting and hoping you get a good ota download and it flashes properly for you..is better than being able to flash and being able to reflash if you actually need it ?
Sorry if I sound rude...but come on...get real would you...You knew the benifits going in and why you rooted it and flashed them..and now you want folks to paint a all rosey picture that a full blown unrooted phone is better than a rooted one running those 3 custom roms...Sorry...it ain't going to happen unless it is coming from someone who didn't install something correctly..or just perfers the bloat and limitations of a stock phone..
If you want & like the stock feel and look...flash Scott's AT&T special edition of his Clean rom..It's debloated..and he has linked to some theming for it..
If you want to go way beyond..wait for Truth's new one out later today or tommorrow..It's fully themed..debloated..has all the latest & greatest available..is fast..and everything works on it..What more could you want...
Personally...I won't ever run a stock phone on purpose after the allowable return time for it..Triangle away has removed the worry of returning it for service..and TWRP has made flashing anything a non issue as well..
It's your phone..run it the way you want to..and be happy..but please don't ask on a developers forum to be convinced to stay on a stock rom..that is just plain lame...IMHO
Mac
I know exactly what you mean and I did feel the same way. Samsung has done an amazing job with this phone. However I have used Jedi, miscoms international roms, cleanrom, now on cleanatt. I have found with a on a custom kernel either persus or the aslyum/note2core. As long as I undervolted and didn't over clock my battery life was a lot better than stock and phone was much quicker and responsive over stock and still had all the great features. We have some awesome devs here for roms and kernels. To me is a very hard choice on what rom to stay on as well as kernel. They are all amazing in there own ways and in my opinion all awesome. I hope no devs flame me I'm just saying they are all very intelligent people at this and I see great things in all there work. AS FOR NOW. I'm on Scotts dedicated at&T. I have took around 40 user and system apps that "I" consider bloat and running persus kernel with the profile zip of 2 offered. My battery life is insane. All day of heavy use and still about 70perecnt left after 8 hours or so. Hope I may have helped you or someone else. I love open source

I have been over clocked to 1800 and above on Jedi and pulled over 2 days off charger with over 8 hours screen time. If you want to stick with stock look, Clean Special build and definitely a kernel. They pull the debugging crap out, optimize voltages, etc. Kernel devs have been working magic...and finding bugs that Sammy, HTC, missed
Edit...patiently waiting for that Blackout later today.

Well...if you want to stay stock...you could try disabling various stock apps that you don't need via settings:app mgr...it's hard to hurt anything and you can always re-able them.
other than that
I think updates are "cleanrom" are pretty easy. Named "clean..." for a reason and I feel like it's stock with added benefits. Have fun deciding.

I bought a second one white this time just got this reason. One to root to death and one totally stock. Just got the ota on the stock one and already miss tapatalk in the multi window. Once the allshare bug gets fixed universally (built into ROM) I think they both will be rooted

And I have to say that I'm quite impressed. Coming from a LG G2x, "A major improvement" is a huge understatement.
I rooted it last night, but I'll stick with the stock ROM and give Touch Wiz a try. I've been busy sorting out all the functionality of this beast and probably will be for the next few weeks.

I use Titanium Backup, and a couple of other apps that require root access. That's the only reason for me. I ran the stock ROM on my G2x, and a stockish ROM on my OG Droid.
I got over my "crack-flasher" stage with the Droid, and once they updated the G2x to Gingerbread, stock worked good enough to be useful...

Flashing a rom to get rid of bloatware is a huuuge plus in itself. Certain apps that can only be used with root permissions are extremely helpful to get rid of ads and what not. Backing up and making sure u dont lose data is also an upside. So besides customizing having root access is really helpful

I also came to the Note 2 from a G2x. And yes, it's an upgrade! I notice it the most when I hold my G2x now. The thing feels like a miniature toy.
IMHO, as long as you've rooted, you might as well switch to something like Jedi Master. It's still Touchwiz, but it cuts out some bloat, adds some really nice features, and it's faster.

I've been looking the ROMs over, and Jedi is one of them. I'll probably flash one of the Jedi versions eventually.
I really couldn't stomach the thought of going back to a LG product after all the support issues with the G2x. When I found out the battery couldn't be accessed and I wouldn't be able to add memory the Nexus 4 wasn't even a consideration. Note 2 all the way!

Root?
Hi I recently got my Galaxy Note 2, upgraded from a Sony Ericsson X10a and don't even ask how much faster the note is. But I wanted to know will rooting ruin my warranty, and I am also paying for the T-Mobile insurance, will rooting void them both?
I've never had an android phone that wasn't rooted. I bricked my first G2x manually installing the 2.3.4 update, and they replaced it with no problem. It didn't even make a good brick...
Technically, yes, it voids the warranty, but I've never had an issue with it.
Storage
i got a 16gb sgn2, i've rooted it and put Frosty v2.1 on it, i've noticed the storage for the internal sd is just totalling to 10.97gb only, and my free space is just 8.33gb. what happened to the other 3-5gb? should i return it? i still have 13days to think about it. any help or ideas?

On many phones I have stayed on stock for stability and feature set. In many cases when you go to another rom (especially AOSP) you lose TW features, S-Pen, etc... and in many cases I find not everything is 100%
That said the Note II development is fantastic. Many of the TW based roms give you everything you get with stock, but with more. AOSP you lose the TW feature set but it is amazingly stable and fast with a whole lot of other features.
With my S3 I could not find a single rom that I did not have problems on, but with the Note II I have a harder time deciding WHICH rom to use :good:

I agree with this guy. Even with my acer liquid mt when I rooted it and used the leaked gingerbread rom for it, the camera (which i use a lot got messed up and would over expose the pictures to white messes of garbage) and I noticed that after switching back to the normal stock rom with root, the camera would screw the video with red green and blue lines...gross I know...
And plus, just like my old ipod touch 2g (which doesnt work cuz the battery is dead. big surprise CRapple) it looked as normal as it should, but behind the curtain, the device was screaming at me to stop, every little tweak, hack, or anything I could do to the device. (Except install android on it because the project cut off 2Gs)
So what im saying is, its more fun to screw with the stock app.
Dont like the boatware?
Download a root app uninstaller.
Dont like anything about most devices?
Someone else doesnt like it either, and theyre smarter than you and figured out how to change that.

The same day I purchased my Note 2, I had it rooted and has TWRP installed on it. Day 2 I was flashing roms. I guess I just really like to tinker with my phones, because where was nothing wrong with stock!
C.FLAT, "I'm staying in stock to keep the slow motion video feature. And because CM 10's camera is really glitchy"
If you are that concerned with the camera features working why not flash a ROM like Scrosler's CLEAN ROM ATT SE. It made from ATT base. Completely stock without the bloatware. Everything works perfectly and you are not at the mercy of your carrier to recieve OTA's instead your at Scroslers lol. But seriously, I would much rather get/wait for updates from a DEV here on XDA (Where I can talk directly to the DEV and or people in the thread also using the ROM) instead of waiting for carriers to take forever and you can't directly talk to the team of people who made the Official ROM . So for me if you want stock look and feel with no bloatware and is more customizable than actual stock I would go with a ROM based or made from complete stock base. Just my 2 cents

I went to Vegas this weekend and flashed a Stock based ROM on my GS2. I carried 2 phones around, my main Nexus 4 and GS2.
I must say, with all honesty, in low light settings and just in general, the GS2 camera is still awesome. Hands down. Kinda makes me sad. The one annoying part is I had to keep killing tasks and clearing memory when I could. Battery just dies if I don't kill tasks constantly.
As a phone, its still great. I love my Nexus 4, but GS2 was my go to phone when it came to Camera shots. I never would have gotten the Nexus 4, if GS2's resolution was higher given the screen size.
Anyhow still a champ, even 2 plus years this phone still has my uses. I am keeping it stock mainly for Camera performance.
My two cents.
Oh yeah forgot I was running the stock 4.1.2
It'd be nice for 4.2.2 but I'm thinking this device has reached it's limit. At 768 MB of memory, it does drag and slow down on stock. Anything above Jellybean, I'd be surprised to see an official ROM for it. Regardless this device kicks booty in CM10.1

Honestly I was super shocked with the jb update, but this phone is more popular than you give credit, and I think we may see 4.2. I mean it already runs quite smooth just with CyanogenMod and jb 4.1 and 4.2 aren't too much different. Now I don't think we're gonna see a big touchwiz update, but I think they may update the android version.

Folks,
I tend to agree, we likely will never see stock 4.2.2. The odds of this happening are low. Samsung has too much hardware in the wild to really consider Hercules for another update. I know getting hardware support hinges on staying on vendor supported releases. The gear is already +/- 2 years of age. Phone companies consider retirement at that point to simplify their supply chains. Especially considering all the new gear coming out, SG4, Note 2, etc adnasium.
There comes a time you fish or cut bait. I cut bait a while back. I am even moving my wife to a used sg2s Hercules from a nexus s. Here nexus s is a dog compared to my herc.
Hercules just got cm 10.1 in the last couple days. 4.2.2. Via clock work mod.
I am running aokp. It is 4.2.2. Latest rc 1.
It is smooth and has all the bells. I am considering a different kernel at this time. What I am running though is very stable. No crash no lock up no pause. Plus keep number of apps to as low a minimum as possible.
There are ways to get better battery performance. Especially when you happen to carry two phones and use Hercules as a camera. Cut it back to 2G and kill all syncing. You will see a massive improvement in battery performance.
Also get an app from play store that is free that came from xda that helps track which apps are using Cpu and engaging the screen. It is called wake lock detector.
You will not get days and days of battery but you will see marked measurable improvement and still be running jb 4.2.2

Honestly, I don't think this version of the Galaxy SII is gonna receive Jelly Bean 4.2.2 officially. I'm surprised that we even got a Jelly Bean update considering how buggy ICS was. Also, 4.2.2 custom ROMs seem slower than their 4.1.2 cousins on this device, with the exception of those compiled with Linaro.
In short, there's a slight possibility we'll get 4.2.2 TouchWiz but I doubt it.

What's happened to Samsung and XDA?

I bought my SIII about 6-8 months ago, coming from the SII.. the Devs and roms for the SII were good and plentiful .. I get the SIII and it seems like there isn't much support for it! I mean my SII shortly after giving it to my wife was updated to 4.1.2 WTF?? I surely thought by now my SIII would be 4.2.2! (Maybe even 4.3!!).. am I wrong for feeling this way? Is it Samsung I should cuss the F out? LoL! Now I have the "itch" to say screw it and start flashing again but nothing seems too promising as a DD

Samsung feels 4.1.2 is pretty much bug free. Now they are struggling to keep up with the booms in technology and software as well. New versions of Android are coming out quicker than Sammy's new phones. Why put out a 4.2.2 when 4.3 is out? So now they concentrate on getting out new phones with 4.3 on it and then they start working on updates to the dozens of existing models. 4.3 was announced as coming to the S3 BUT that will be the international first then US months later depending on carriers.
What is in 4.2.2 that you MUST have? There are 4.3 AOSP ROMs all over if you want that.

I too feel like the T-Mobile variant isn't getting enough love.... The international version gets it all!

There are various ways to flash other carriers roms to T-Mobile, the AT&T variant is almost (and in some cases) a direct port...
It doesn't seem like the newer versions of Android add too much more function than 4.1.2. As far as looks, their are plenty of ways to theme your phone to make it look like whatever you like

There are some awesome 4.3 roms there, what else do you need?

Going to have to agree with this. 4.3 even on the best ROMs are alphas at best.
The only semi stable AOSP/CM ROMs are 4.2.2 and under.
And all AOSP/CM ROMs since have a weird bug with Instagram or third party apps and their front facing camera.

Since posting this thread I've used CM10.2 Nightlies and also ParanoidAndroid 3.99 RC2.. I can honestly say (and this is of course my own opinion and result) that CM has been a better experience. I use my phone a bunch for little things, internet, text messaging, FBing, Pictures, XDA, games, etc and haven't had any problems with CM.. Only reason I switched back from PA to CM was honestly only that Candy Crush wasn't compatible with PA (and I barely play CC anymore lol).. I've just lost my ability to use Triangle Away for some reason.. It was working on the CM10.2 09/07 nightly, flashed PA and didn't work. Then flashed back to CM but the 09/26 and still not working, flashed the new kernel and TA still gets stuck at Detecting Packages.. Wish someone would tell me why.. I've posted in like 5 different places and nobody responds

My biggest issues are surrounding bluetooth - I experience issues related to pops when switching songs - almost sounds like a non-flushed buffer, and sometimes major lag... almost like the app has crashed, but it doesn't... it comes back. This was on SlimBean 4.3...
I haen't tried CM or the others primarily because I reverted to 4.1.2 for stability.
My best bet on Triangle Away is to run it just before you boot into download mode... (that SHOULD work...) Samsung introduced stuff back when 4.0 came out where the triangle would get re-set whenever you'd boot into an altered recovery...
