New SGN2 owner. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

And I have to say that I'm quite impressed. Coming from a LG G2x, "A major improvement" is a huge understatement.
I rooted it last night, but I'll stick with the stock ROM and give Touch Wiz a try. I've been busy sorting out all the functionality of this beast and probably will be for the next few weeks.

Welcome!! Glad you're enjoying your SGN II as much as we are! :good:

I also got mine yesterday. Im thinking of rooting so I can tether my t.v. and laptop.

Welcome to the Note side! I upgraded from a GS3 and I love my note. I haven't rooted it not sure why do you guys think its worth it? The last phone I rooted was a LG G2X

I use Titanium Backup, and a couple of other apps that require root access. That's the only reason for me. I ran the stock ROM on my G2x, and a stockish ROM on my OG Droid.
I got over my "crack-flasher" stage with the Droid, and once they updated the G2x to Gingerbread, stock worked good enough to be useful...

Flashing a rom to get rid of bloatware is a huuuge plus in itself. Certain apps that can only be used with root permissions are extremely helpful to get rid of ads and what not. Backing up and making sure u dont lose data is also an upside. So besides customizing having root access is really helpful

I also came to the Note 2 from a G2x. And yes, it's an upgrade! I notice it the most when I hold my G2x now. The thing feels like a miniature toy.
IMHO, as long as you've rooted, you might as well switch to something like Jedi Master. It's still Touchwiz, but it cuts out some bloat, adds some really nice features, and it's faster.

I've been looking the ROMs over, and Jedi is one of them. I'll probably flash one of the Jedi versions eventually.
I really couldn't stomach the thought of going back to a LG product after all the support issues with the G2x. When I found out the battery couldn't be accessed and I wouldn't be able to add memory the Nexus 4 wasn't even a consideration. Note 2 all the way!

Haaaaaaa!!!!

After 5 months on a gs3, i just got the note 2, rooted it, but still on stock, but with xone kernel, overclocked it to 2ghz definitely a beast!

Considering 1900 OC is like adding a whole other 1.2g processor, id be hard pressed to push this thing that hard....

Root?
Hi I recently got my Galaxy Note 2, upgraded from a Sony Ericsson X10a and don't even ask how much faster the note is. But I wanted to know will rooting ruin my warranty, and I am also paying for the T-Mobile insurance, will rooting void them both?

I've never had an android phone that wasn't rooted. I bricked my first G2x manually installing the 2.3.4 update, and they replaced it with no problem. It didn't even make a good brick...
Technically, yes, it voids the warranty, but I've never had an issue with it.

Storage
i got a 16gb sgn2, i've rooted it and put Frosty v2.1 on it, i've noticed the storage for the internal sd is just totalling to 10.97gb only, and my free space is just 8.33gb. what happened to the other 3-5gb? should i return it? i still have 13days to think about it. any help or ideas?

Got my note 2 today handed my s3 to my girl shes as happy as a pig in shi# ' just waiting for her brother to drop his laptop off so I can root this sucker!!! Pleased with my purchase:thumbup:

Should I root?

I have had a epic and a nexus s 4g and I rooted both of them and loved it. I rooted for the main reason to help with making the phone faster due to them just having a single core. Using the galaxy nexus it seems to be very fast stock. Will I see a big difference rooting this phone and over clocking it and running roms or is just as smooth as it being stock. I do not use wifi tether and themes really don't matter to me. All I care about is speed and stability. If rooting makes this beast even faster please let me know and recommended what you feel would be the best set up for me to use.

I've always rooted my devices and ran custom firmware (Xperia x10, Captivate, Xperia Arc, Desire Z, Desire S, Xperia Ray, Nexus S)
But with the Galaxy Nexus...ah I am just not feeling it. I am going to wait I think until it gets old enough that google is not giving it the latest version of Android...and by that time I might not even have it because I plan on just paying the early upgrade fee and getting the latest Nexus always, then selling my current device to cover the cost anyways so...I don't know. But I am personally happy with it as is for the time being.
You've rooted before so you know what it's like. I like having complete control and the ability to have access to system apps as well as flash custom kernels and ROM's. So if you want speed and stability then yes root because ROM kernel combos will give you that. But I'm sure you're aware of this already. My phone is much faster with better battery life than stock. AOKP ms3 and faux123's newest kernel has given me what I look for. AOKP's customizations make the phone my own which is what I want besides the speed and stability.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I didn't root for a while but now am happy I did, I dont really notice speed increases but the customability is much better, I have a menu button always visible better lock screen with access to SMS, Widget for wireless AP and silent in my Notification bar. There is definitely benefits!
I never even had a smartphone till I got the nexus. I was so nervous about rooting it. Thought for sure I would brick it. But I realized what is the point of having a developers phone and not seeing what developers can do with it? Might as well have gotten a razr or something that would have ics in a short time. I read, and read some more, found a toolkit that also had a video and rooted my nexus. Best decision I ever made. The development for this phone is insane. I still get nervous when I flash any new rom, theme, animation mod, softkey, or whatever, but that keeps me on my toes so I don't make any mistakes. Stock was nice, but why not have stock on steroids? Battery life improvement is reason alone to root. So I guess I wood say read, learn and root.

Thanks for everyone's in put I feel in about a few days I'll just root and be addicted to flash crack again. Lol

Any users coming from the Galaxy Nexus?

Hey, it's mod, and i was wondering if there is anyone who made the switch from the Galaxy Nexus to the Galaxy S III. If so, do you prefer it over the Gnex? Or do you miss AOSP Jellybean/ICS. I'm thinking of upgrading to the Galaxy S III off contract because of an issue my Gnex is having so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I am considering making the switch over. I love the GNex. Maybe I'm just a little bored with it? Though I do get bored with my phones easily.
The camera is making me want S3. And I also wouldn't switch over if there wasn't a good AOKP/CM10 ROM for the phone. I will likely get the S3, and then that same day install AOKP or CM10.

I had a Galaxy Nexus for a couple months on Verizon before switching to AT&T and getting the GS3. I figured if I didn't like it I could sell it and buy the GSM Nexus off contract. So far I'm happy with it. The two phones seem to perform about the same for me. The GS3 has a slightly faster processor and more RAM, but I think the difference between stock Android and TouchWiz balances out the better specs. I fully expected to flash an AOSP ROM shortly after getting the phone, but I actually like some of the feature of TouchWiz such as the quick SMS after hanging up from a call (I've always thought voicemail was silly). Battery life has been about the same, possibly a little better on the GS3. I'm assuming the larger battery is balanced out by having more processes running on the phone.
Overall, I'm happy with the decision to switch to the S3 instead of getting another Nexus. I love the inclusion of an SD card slot plus the larger screen. The only thing I don't like is the decision to use a physical home button. I'm fine with going with capacitive buttons instead of the navigation bar, but I don't like having a physical button apart from the power/volume. It's obviously not a big enough issue to make me regret the phone.

Custom Stock ROM

Hey I was looking to see if there's a stock themed rom with all the stock features but custom modifications to make it have much better performance? Like with an even higher benchmark than real stock. I've found one but it had horrible performance on my phone... Not just benchmark related performance.. But anyone know a really good one? I think I will, at least to compare. Morphology works on both ROMs, so that's cool. I think so many of these threads get shut down, and it's a shame. For me, I'd like to see some comparisons of the different ROMs. Pros/Cons, maybe a poll on what ROM reigns supreme at this point in time, etc.
I realized FreeGS3 has, by far, the most activity in the thread. However, it's been open since July. People's doesn't have that many but it's only been opened since November. It makes it challenging when trying to actually compare and see which ROMs are actually the most popular overall.

Sometimes I think developing is overrated. Most ROM feel and look the same. I rather have a small community of developing then a large one full of copy cats ROM.
The hardware and built of this phone is just top notch and I refuse to downgrade over anything currently available.
Give me a CM10 ROM give me a stock rooted ROM and give me a stock with Mod ROM and I'm happy.

This exactly it for me and the reason that I went with the LGOG. I really enjoy the interaction that the Mopho devs brought to our very underutilized device and have faith that they can do the same here. I don't know of another device that can say they had functioning ports of AOKP, CM7, CM9, CM10, CM10.1 (almost), PA, Liquid Smooth, etc all by one dev.
Im about to do this today very excited
