I was just cleaning up my Note II's display and found a very small scratch on it.
I talked with Samsung Care's toll free number 1800-3000-8282 (India)
The guy was telling me that "You use that phone and we don't care how you got scratch on it and it will not be covered under warranty."
Does it come under warranty?

"Warranty does not cover normal wear and tear (including, without limitation, wear and tear of camera lenses, batteries or displays)."
In short - no, the warranty doesn't cover damage to the screen caused by usage. Warranties usually only cover manufacturing defects, depending on local laws.
So I've to kill the kernel with some junk file or mess up with PC-Odin to kill it.
I'm gonna get it replaced in any way.

I dont know what Samsung India gonna do under the warranty, but in Thailand they have all the spare parts so that you won't get a whole phone replacement.

You want a warranty replacement because you scratched your screen?
I paid about 690USD(38000K) for the phone.
I used so many phones which had gorilla glass but they never got a single scratch on em.
What are the chances that I won't face more scratches because of this faulty glass?
Chances are 100% if you use a good screen protector (matte ones are tough)

It's not faulty glass. Some people, for some reason, have the weird idea that gorilla glass is unscratchable.
As hardening glass makes it more brittle, there is a point to how much they can harden the glass to make it more scratch-resistant. And anything harder than the glass WILL scratch it.
There is no reason in the world to not buy a 30cent screen protector from ebay- they prevent scratches, they are more than 99.9% clear (being so thin it's only natural), and it's very easy to glide your fingers on them, no resistance.
I don't know how lucky you got with your previous devices, but you scratching your screen is by no means a manufacturer's fault...

Its not faulty glass. You just did not take care of it. Probably put it down on something or had it in a pocket with a key or sand.
Ive never had any issues with scratches even on phones without gorilla glass.
Gorilla glass is not imoervious to scratches. It does get scrarched as other people will tell you.

It is scratch resistant. Look up the definition of resistant. It will resist scratching up to a certain limit, meaning anything harder than the gorilla glass eg sand will still scratch your screen.

Sorry I shouldn't have assumed
But to answer the original question you likely will not get anything replaced under warranty because scratches happen. Part of life really. But they do not cause themselves lol.
If it is a deep scratch that is bothering you badly, you can pay to have it replaced. That's pretty much about it
learn the meaning of "resist",
the gorilla glass is scratch RESIST, not PROOF, for most metal based scratch, gorilla glass can resist them. On the other hand, all crystallize base scratch is weakness for gorilla glass, a single sand can scratch yr screen, if its on yr screen when u clean it
more than that, i dont think they will replace the screen for u because human fault, although u destory the kernel or panel, they will just replace the certain parts

Scratch resistant does not mean "scratch impervious", it means that it just doesn't scratch as easily as regular untreated glass.

To be very clean. Im very very verrrryy careful with my electronics and never damaged any in anyway! But its how how people say you can stratch it with keys or pens or put it in a bad with bolts and screws and the glass wont be scratched.
It false advertisement because i had my vibrant in an empty pocket fresh dry cleaned too! no dust and anything inside to cut it.
I had many average phones where i only got a tiny scratch on the screen from the phone falling from my hand after 2yrs of use and landing on concrete...
its funny how this glass gets scratched up very deeply without being dropped or scrapped at! and its a scratch for sure because when i move my thumb on it pressed i can feel the sharp line of the scratch on my thumb
Maybe there is a big misunderstanding, maybe only euro galaxy S phones have the gorilla glass... because this sure doesnt!

man... although a simple glass wont scratch with nothing in your pocket..
Maybe someone touched it when you didnt know, or something happened.
I've been using my vibrant for about three weeks now and have no scratches, only some marks on the battery cover.
The samsung vibrant does indeed have gorilla glass. Just because it has gorilla glass doesn't mean its un -scratchable. It just means it's more resistant than regular glass...if you don't mind me asking...what did you have in your pockets? A machete? A light saber?!...I kid, I kid...the morale of this story is, get a screen protector, prevent your vibrant from getting scathed by a light saber!

Interesting post...I'm actually a screen protector freak and have ordered multiple brands of screen protectors for the Vibrant (actually even Galaxy S just to try it...) so I'm all FOR screen protectors...best one so far is from Korea.
About your scratch...unless there's a scratch fairy, there is SOMETHING that caused that scratch. It may be foreign to you because you may not have known when it happened...It's highly possible someone else without your knowledge was the cause of it. Scratches just don't appear out of thin air...
Bottom line...the glass on the Samsung is solid...very solid...I've dropped my phone before so I know first hand how durable the glass is...it's some tough $#!t....

I don't use a sp, but my phone still looks brand new.. No sp, no case, usually keep my phone in my pocket when walking around. Screen is still smooth a glass. Could samsung have used different materials depending on when it was built, kind of like the problem with the shortage if amoled screens?

I would never personally do this, and a 3 dollar screen protector to protect the integrity of a very sweet piece of equipment, is a very small price to pay.
I just find it hard to believe that with only cloth surrounding it it got scratched. Not even lint in your pocket? I call BS
LOL
I have had my SGS3 since July and I have had a screen protector on it except for 1 week and in that time the phone got 3 nice scratches on it.
I am anal with my phone as I have a screen protector on it as well as one on the back and a rubber case over it also, so this is not a case of
being careless.
I put a post on Corning's Gorilla Glass 2 Facebook page and I got a reply saying basically Get in touch with Samsung as Corning can't do
anything, but if I want to discuss the problem further, contact them at [email protected]
Why doesn't everyone who has had problems with their screen contact them and maybe they will see this isn't an isolated incident.
This is what I wrote and what they replied...

Why is the Gorilla Glass 2 on the Samsung Galaxy S3 less resistant to scratching than the original Gorilla Glass on the original Galaxy S?
My 5 month old $650 Galaxy S3 has 3 nice scratches on the screen when my screen protector came off and I didn't get the new one for a
week. This is not right for a device that costs so much. Corning should be looking into these problems.
I have heard many more stories of scratches and cracks on the screen of the S3. Does this mean I will have to stay away from products with
Gorilla Glass from now on?

My gorilla glass is outstanding. Dropped without a case/screen protector flat down about a meter onto wavy tiles and it didnt even scratch. I also dropped it on its side from my pocket from chair a couple times and its still flawless. Maybe I'm lucky.
Yes, most people will respond that their phones are in great condition, but this is for those who have had trouble with
the screen.
I am very protective of my phone. It was scratched in the (1) week I didn't have a screen protector on it. My original SGS's
screen was in new impeccable condition when I sold it after using it for 2 years, so why is this new phone scratched after
only 5 months?
Ian
There's lots of ways to scratch glass, a bit of grit or sand in your pocket ETC .. i wouldn't risk using my phone without a protector for even one day.
Might have to eventually just accept you scratched your phones screen.
I too have been very careful to not scratch my screen. I am fanatical about clean hands. The smallest partical of dust seems to be able to scratch the screen. As much as this phone cost, you would think they would throw in even the cheapest screen protector to hold you over untill you can get something better. Am i being too petty?

I find a good quality screen protector is not even slightly noticeable on the screen & in no way affects use, i have no idea why they don't supply one.
I am also amazed they advise against using them in their literature.

Another thread complaining about the glass cracking/scratching..? :silly:
Hi Everybody, I got to scratch my Galaxy Note 2, and that's bad and quite deep scratches, you can make sounds while passing my fingernails across it, and also the deep ones can serves as rail/ruler if i put my fingernails point on it... while it's turned on i can't really see scratches, just if i look and search for them, but it's there and it's annoying me so much, just so ugly and I gonna tell you how it happened...
I live in China and bought it here, my old phone is a GSII and it broked, i was quite careless about that phone and it dropped down the floor too many times, really, finally last month it stops work caz it brakes the mainboard, after 1 year and 3 months suffering, i never used screen protector and really, SGII screen does not have any scratches that you can see, just if you point it into direct sunlight, but none of them you can feel with your fingers or nails, none of them are deep, if you clean it up it's almost new, so when i got the note 2 the guy was putting on the screen protector and I said, hey, don't do it, this phones doesn't need it... anyways, after almost a month, my friend was asking me if the screen is really strong, i said yes, you can't really scratch it, i put knives, keys and so and it doesn't do anything, so there was a mug in front of me, that i thought it was plastic, and i scratch over the screen and you know what? fuc**ing ceramic/porcelain, I just forgot how strong porcelain can be, my friend said, well done, you got it... well, i fuc**d up my phone and i feel stupid, and just to let you guys know, let your phones far away from ceramic/porcelain, it's really strong against glass. I wanna do something, my options are...
Replace the whole thing, buy a new display module... (too expensive)
Replace just the gray front panel and the glass.. (Replacement touch screen mirror << i found this in a website dnt knw if its the front glass)
buy some screen protector that can fill the scratches (if I replace the glass I will buy one anyways
take it to a glass store and ask them to resurface (dnt knw if they will do it and also seems that before the glass, the surface is not really glass, there is some cover on it)
Well i need suggestions and perhaps answer my doubts above if possible. Appreciate this forum.
Thank you,
Junior
I suggest you start using a screen protector. I got one free one with every case I purchased on Taobao, otherwise they're about 15rmb applied down at any phone store.

Yeah, I will buy a nice protector, but i feel that i should do something before it, i think even good protectors will not fill the scratches, so I am thinking about replace the front glass, if I find it, or resurface if its possible, still don't know what are the possibilities on fixing it.
I had good experience with gorilla glass before, it didn't scratch like other type of glass on old phones, but ceramic/porcelain/sand is indeed strong.

Dude - first thing is that you are abusing your phone device, Second I don't think anyone of us on this forum will ever try running knifes or blades or porcelain mugs on our phone screens..!! If you have heard of bullet-proof glass, they resist bullets up to some extent but then it breaks, it doesn't mean that I'll fire bullets at my car's windshield - so my friend get it repaired - changed whatever but don't abuse your phone display on purpose, they have a Gorilla Glass to save your device from scratches on that one odd day when your phone may suffer an accident...
Hi, I've had my phone for 2 weeks (replaced 3 times due to battery issues) and its got a hairline scratch going all the way across the screen! It's really annoying, I bought it from Vodafone UK and am considering replacing it since I'm locked into a 2 year contract. I've been so careful with my phone, I keep it in a pocket with nothing in and haven't dropped it so I have no idea how this "gorilla glass" has gotten scratched, also the back is marked from general use and I can see shiny sivery bits on the back casing.
What could I say for them to replace it? Like I say, I feel like scum for replacing it due to a scratch, but they're taking enough from me a month!
Thank you
Most carriers I know won't replace for scratched glass unless you got it that way.
Also the gorilla glass is scratch resistant not scratch proof. Generally things like sand can still scratch it quite nicely lol.
You could try asking them but I wouldn't get your hopes up to be honest

When I bought HOX I was all like "What's wrong with these fools buying overpriced screen protections on Gorilla Glass 2 ?!"
After over half of a year I've got only two, barely noticeable scratches so I don't think I need tape some sh*t over my display. My problem with Gorilla Glass is, that it's too hard. Normal display is more prone to scratch, but it's flexible, unlike Gorilla Glass. My HOX once slipped out of my hands and fell off stairs and since then I've got two small spots of splitted glass on sides (between the display and its frame). I hope these splits won't extend...

Obviously not scratch proof. No gorilla glass. Yes to the arguably "reinforced" glass. As long as you don't put your phone in with keys, coins, etc...you should be fine. I don't use a screen protector or case on mine and so far I only have a few nicks from light drops.

Watch out for sand, I'm pretty sure that's what scratched mine
There is no scratch proof glass on phones. Even Gorilla Glass scratches against things like sand.

Well gorilla glass is not much more than Cornings branded version of the hardened glass found on any phone including the GN. It is as resistant as any phone, but as it's still glass, it's likely that it will scratch. Personally mine has a bunch of tiny scratches(had it since launch). I bet they are caused by sand, and they are no better or worse than my previous phone with gorilla glass.
Whether you need a screen-protector is a question of whether you will be more annoyed by the protector or the tiny scratches. But it is likely that you will get tiny scratches.
My experience:
Galaxy Skyrocket with Gorilla glass: 1 1/2 years without a single scratch.
Galaxy Nexus: scratched in the first month.
Get a screen protector. These screens are pretty soft. It will easily scratch just from being in your pocket.

I've had mine for about 15 months, and I try to be careful with the phone. But try as I may, things happen. My glass is still crystal clear and free of any visible scratches, but there are multiple spots on the bezel around the glass that are scratched and pitted. I don't use any screen protectors or a case.

no it wont. just being in your pocket will NOT scratch the screen. however, if you have some sand in there or something harder than glass, it will scratch it.
i have had my phone for 14 months now, NEVER had a screen protector on it. and i JUST got my first scratch and i believe it was from a grain of sand on my thumb. i spend a LOT of time at the beach in Feb and March (live in Florida ) and its my only guess as to how it happened.
if you are careful, you should be OK without one....but getting one is probably a good idea if you are around sand a lot.
Yes it scratches
- wore out your welcome
Got mine at launch, no screen protector and no major scratches. There are a couple MINOR ones but nothing that can bee seen without careful inspection. I don't abuse the phone but I also don't baby it. I have used a holster and had it in my pocket. Go naked you will be fine if you don't abuse it.

Common misconception: Gorilla glass is not scratch resistant. If anything, slightly shatterproof.

The misconception is what exactly a "scratch" is. A layer of glass is actually removed and cannot be "fixed". Anything will scratch if rubbed against an abrasive with a greater hardness.

Agreed. My comment was just to reinforce the fact that unlike popular belief, gorilla glass is not at all scratch resistant but rather shatterproof. Not so much as an entire "layer".
