[Guide] Defeat tether block *need root* - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

the things I used to get this to work are not mine. I give thanks to WarlockW for his guide to removing the locked and hidden apns.
I was hit with a message a while back saying t mobile has blocked my tethering. After doing a few things, I was able to get it to work on my phone again after being hit with the message of death.
Note: I'm using CM10 so if you cant get this working, try a non-stock rom
1. Go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962752 and go through the steps to remove the hidden apns and add his modified apn file to your phone.
2. You need to be able to use a vpn. If you want a free one, I'm using "Hotspot shield vpn" from the marketplace to enable my vpn with its settings, otherwise, go into system settings -> wireless and networks -> vpn. then go ahead and add your favorite vpn.
3. You need to download a tethering app from the marketplace. I'm using wifi tether for root users, the link for it is on our forums somewhere, just have to look for it.
if it works, I'm happy with just thanks, donate to your favorite developer

Hmmm usually with aosp based roms you just need to change user agents and use the native tethering to avoid the upsell page. Did you try that before doing all this?

Yes I did, I had the message saying they blocked my tethering and that wasn't working for me. Had to find another way to make it work. This works

WIFI (Hotspot) Tether After ICS Update

Anyone found a work around the wifi tether issue? Rooted phone stock ICS.
If you can use Bluetooth then FoxFi + PDANet Tablet works well between me and my tablet. Not sure if it works with a laptop.
Go into titanium backup, and either freeze or uninstall tethering provision.

I don't know if that was exactly the tethering file i uninstalled with TiB, but that one isn't listed for me.
Actually, if i did remove it then that's probably what lets me use the built in tethering (under wireless settings). No redirect page for me... hm...

Wait, what's issue you're having? Are you trying to get back free hotspot for turning your device into a hotspot, or you can't connect?
TerrorCandii Gaming uses ASUS/Samsung
I froze device management and the tethering provision, works now for me.
Unsure if device management was needed.

I deleted the apk to the HotSpot, and now I have to go all around settings to activate it. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of that APK, and either I'm blind, or none of them have an obvious name. If someone could point me to it, it would be awesome. I downloaded Mr. X's zipped rom, but can't find it there.
I could go to the market, and download one of those shortcut thingies, but I don't want those, I want the stock one.
Also, FYI, the only thing that has to be frozen/deleted is the Tethering Provision.

Hi All,
I am having a slightly different issue. I'm rooted and have frozen the 'TetheringProvision 1.04.02.TM'.
When I was broadcasting, my computer wouldn't connect to the network. My workaround was to delete the connection in Windows Network Manager and reconnect.
My tethering icon is different than the above screenshots, I have a T-Mobile branded icon.
Now that I'm able to connect, I'm getting a message in my webbrowser to sign up for a tethering plan. I've tried a User-Agent switcher, but that didn't work... anyone have any suggestions?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the message:
Turn your Smartphone into a Mobile HotSpot!
Share your smartphone's high-speed internet connection with your laptop, iPad®, iPod®, or any other Wi-Fi enabled device.
it sounds like you did everything right that is weird. What browser do you use chrome? try a different browser first. Even though a different user string should have worked. Maybe they are catching on. Dont forget that all the carriers have people in here as well so they all know what we are doing.
Try using a phone or ipod to connect to your hotspot and see if that works.
I'm having similar issues with mobile hotspot. I have tried freezing and deleting Tether provisioning, device management, and a number of other stock services. However no matter what, the T-Mobile icon always appears when I enable hotspot or wifi tethering and I'm limitted to the stupid WEP access with generated keys.
Anyone have a functional workaround for enabling the ICS hotspot service? currently i'm using FoxFi, but would rather have the real deal
I deleted the tethering provisioning directly from system/app and mine is working fine both the usb tethering n hotspot tethering. I used root explorer to do so
ROM manage has a tethering app. Seems to work fine.
I am running rooted stock ICS and could not get tethering to work by freezing tethering manager. Then I installed the WIFI Tether app (the one made by the Titanium Backup people) and was able to tether via that app. That worked for about an hour and now I am getting the TMO upsell screen even when I try to tether through the WIFI Tether app. Any ideas?
You should freeze/uninstalling TETHERING PROVISION.
How did T-Mobile totally block my tethering?
Hey guys, I've been using workarounds and such for a very long time with my T-Mobile phones, and T-Mobile has been sending me "you're going to be blocked" messages for a while and I've just ignored them. Now, it says "you're blocked" and I just thought ok, I'll use a mobile user agent on my computer and secure sites...
Not so fast - my mobile hotspot SSID doesn't even show up on my laptop anymore using my Wireless Tether for Root Users app...how is this possible?
I'm on the stock rooted JB rom
I believe they started blocking by the user agent on your browser. You'll need to set it to something Android generic.
EDIT: just saw your comment on your user agent. Nevermind.
What message have they been sending?
Please, tell us more about what you have tried. You're using the Treve Mod - Wireless Tether app? And you changed the APN using the APN Backup and Restore?
That's the problem with jb touchwiz, ssid doesn't show. You need to adjust a few settings in the wifi tether app.. or there's a modded one floating around. I forget where the instructions are, but more workaround are definitely there for your problem
The modded app that you're talking about: Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735 and download the one labelled "WifiTether-TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012_driverReload2." You should go into settings and change the Device-Profile to 'Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)'. SSID does show up and WiFi-Encryption and Access Control both work for me.
Hope this helps.
Anyone know about the 70$ pre paid plan?
So i have the 70$ month that just went to unlimited 4g and it says no tethering but I was wondering of there is a special tethering app or someway to tether without penalty. I'm rooted if that matters.thanks
Um pretty sure if your rooted and on the plan you could tether with certain ROMs built in, or download WiFi tether with root from the play store
I work for T-Mo,
I'm unsure if Tmobile has blocked any level of tethering (you can bypass it on ANY other plan) I haven't seen an attempt on
"truly unlimited" yet.
What you CAN try to do is download
"WiFi tether for root users"
Google it on a computer, and downloaded the LATEST apk.
If you are using a rom above ICS
You will need to use a user agent changer in order to browse, it will cut you off because the system detects
if you're using I.E or Mozilla, and it will route you to a page to upgrade blah blah blah.
There are other threads here that show u how to do it.
Edit: Okay so I couldn't find it so here it is (Credit to whoever posted it):
1- Somewhere in these forums there is TrevE_Mod wifi tether mod.apk download it.
2-Google play -> Search Hotspot Shield VPN -> Download
3-Open Hotspot Shield VPN and start protection
4- Open TrevE_Mod tether ap -> menu button -> settings
5- Follow:
Device profile- generic ics/jb (wlan0)
Setup Method - Netd-Ndc (master)
Check box - Send Netd Max Client Cmd
Then Check boxes - Wifi driver reload and Wifi Driver reload 2
After you configured your steps to wifi tether:
1- Open Hotspot Shield VP and start protection
2- Go to TrevE_Mod wifi tether app and hit the press start to tether (takes about 15-20 seconds to actually work)
3- Connect to the hotspot
Not working.
Telling me to the tmobile page asking to enable teetering. .
For the few that have the "enable tethering" for T-Mobile page, get a add-on (chrome) called agentswitch, you get the "enable tethering" page because your phone knows that its not the phone that is using the data, get agentswich and set it to safari (doesn't change the theme or anything like that, just makes it look like your phone is using the data)
I got it to work, but you have to exit out (hit the home button) before the phone can check for your tethering plan. This worked several months ago, not sure if any updates have plugged that hole.
SGH-I317 Free WiFi Hotspot.
There Is a free App in the android market called Control Center by Hi Tools Studio. By activating the hotspot toggle it actually turns on the phone's native hotspot application. then you can go into the system settings and configure your mobile hotspot settings. Change the name add a password. I am on a rooted stock rom. The app does not request super user permission. It may also work for other phones.
The difference is that I don't have tethering on my mobile plan. When I try to activate tethering through my built-in android Hotspot settings I get greeted with a message saying "To enable hotspot on this device, go to att.com/wireless or dial 611" So Yes it has EXTRA MAGIC.
Still looking...
The 4.3 update has broken FoxFi. I am seeking a replacement that works to circumvent the checking of my plan to use a wifi hotspot. I don't want to root or flash a ROM. I've scoured tons of places to either fix FoxFi or get another app to no avail. If anyone knows of such, please share. Thanks!
Thanks budy its really work.
It’s pretty simple, you will need a rooted Verizon Note 2 and also use a modified Wifi Tether app.
Step 1. Download and install the modified Wifi Tether app:
Step 2. Run the Wifi Tether app and choose “Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)” for Device-Profile.
Step 3. Choose “Netd-Ndc (master)” for Setup Method.
Step 4. Make sure “Send Netd Max Client Cmd” is checked ON.
Step 5. And also make sure “Routing Fix” is checked ON.
Step 6. You can setup SSID and wifi encryption if you’d like. Once everything set up, simply start the Wifi Tether and try connecting to it from your computer or another wifi device.
it also work on other cell phone.
