There Is a free App in the android market called Control Center by Hi Tools Studio. By activating the hotspot toggle it actually turns on the phone's native hotspot application. then you can go into the system settings and configure your mobile hotspot settings. Change the name add a password. I am on a rooted stock rom. The app does not request super user permission. It may also work for other phones.

The difference is that I don't have tethering on my mobile plan. When I try to activate tethering through my built-in android Hotspot settings I get greeted with a message saying "To enable hotspot on this device, go to att.com/wireless or dial 611" So Yes it has EXTRA MAGIC.
Still looking...
The 4.3 update has broken FoxFi. I am seeking a replacement that works to circumvent the checking of my plan to use a wifi hotspot. I don't want to root or flash a ROM. I've scoured tons of places to either fix FoxFi or get another app to no avail. If anyone knows of such, please share. Thanks!

Thanks budy its really work.
It’s pretty simple, you will need a rooted Verizon Note 2 and also use a modified Wifi Tether app.
Step 1. Download and install the modified Wifi Tether app:
Step 2. Run the Wifi Tether app and choose “Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)” for Device-Profile.
Step 3. Choose “Netd-Ndc (master)” for Setup Method.
Step 4. Make sure “Send Netd Max Client Cmd” is checked ON.
Step 5. And also make sure “Routing Fix” is checked ON.
Step 6. You can setup SSID and wifi encryption if you’d like. Once everything set up, simply start the Wifi Tether and try connecting to it from your computer or another wifi device.
it also work on other cell phone.
Links are all down. Some one have the apk?

Alright guys finally got this working on my Note 2.....
If you need the wifi tether then follow this...
First what you need to do is Flash XquiziT N2 Rom v3 and make sure you select wanam 15 toggle instead of stock toggle during installation . you might wanna know why this Rom, Because it has Wanam's 15 Statusbar Toggle that has HotSpot toggle.
Second the Replace the APN setting Follow this LINK
and once you replace the APN setting Reboot and use the hotspot toggle under notification and ENJOY. FYI i have the unlimited data plan.
I tried the APN changer with rooted stock Rom and it didn't work only XquiziT Rom w15 toggle and APN changer worked for me...
Finally i would like to Thank nightfox11 for posting it here and WarlockW for making the APN Changer
Once I deleted the apns, and restored the xml file in the OP, I was able to activate tethering using this widget: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achmyr.android.froyo

I followed the directions in the OP, then used a widget to activate wifi tethering. the tethering provision app does not need to be frozen, however, if you try to turn on tethering via the settings menu, it will undo the hack. You will have to delete your apns, and restore again.
If you freeze the tethering provision app, the settings menu will force close when trying to activate tethering. This will prevent it from undoing the hack.
Native USB tethering does not work; but proxying through ADB works (it has always worked).
that's all there is to it.

Oh wow I replaced the APNs last night and was using some random widgets from the market to turn the Hotspot on. I would be able to connect to the Hotspot but the pages wouldn't load up. Yup, just rooted using mskip's note II tool and then APN replacement trick. And as everyone says, do NOT try turning tethering on through the settings. Use a 3rd party tethering widget (link in the previous post). Let us know if it works out for ya!

It sounds like your regular Hotspot password. After you turn tethering on with a widget, go into the tethering app, select 'configure' and you can either change the network key/password to whatever you'd like or make it an open network

Hey guys, I've been using workarounds and such for a very long time with my T-Mobile phones, and T-Mobile has been sending me "you're going to be blocked" messages for a while and I've just ignored them. Now, it says "you're blocked" and I just thought ok, I'll use a mobile user agent on my computer and secure sites...
Not so fast - my mobile hotspot SSID doesn't even show up on my laptop anymore using my Wireless Tether for Root Users app...how is this possible?
I'm on the stock rooted JB rom
I believe they started blocking by the user agent on your browser. You'll need to set it to something Android generic.
EDIT: just saw your comment on your user agent. Nevermind.

Please, tell us more about what you have tried. You're using the Treve Mod - Wireless Tether app? And you changed the APN using the APN Backup and Restore?
That's the problem with jb touchwiz, ssid doesn't show. You need to adjust a few settings in the wifi tether app.. or there's a modded one floating around. I forget where the instructions are, but more workaround are definitely there for your problem

The modded app that you're talking about: Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735 and download the one labelled "WifiTether-TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012_driverReload2." You should go into settings and change the Device-Profile to 'Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)'. SSID does show up and WiFi-Encryption and Access Control both work for me.
Hope this helps.
We got multiple threads on this. please search before posting. Also wrong section.
the things I used to get this to work are not mine. I give thanks to WarlockW for his guide to removing the locked and hidden apns.
I was hit with a message a while back saying t mobile has blocked my tethering. After doing a few things, I was able to get it to work on my phone again after being hit with the message of death.
Note: I'm using CM10 so if you cant get this working, try a non-stock rom
1. Go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962752 and go through the steps to remove the hidden apns and add his modified apn file to your phone.
2. You need to be able to use a vpn. If you want a free one, I'm using "Hotspot shield vpn" from the marketplace to enable my vpn with its settings, otherwise, go into system settings -> wireless and networks -> vpn. then go ahead and add your favorite vpn.
3. You need to download a tethering app from the marketplace. I'm using wifi tether for root users, the link for it is on our forums somewhere, just have to look for it.
if it works, I'm happy with just thanks, donate to your favorite developer
Hmmm usually with aosp based roms you just need to change user agents and use the native tethering to avoid the upsell page. Did you try that before doing all this?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yes I did, I had the message saying they blocked my tethering and that wasn't working for me. Had to find another way to make it work. This works
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Hey guys. I just came from using a Galaxy Note 2. Since my school does not have the greatest network available, I like to tether my laptop through my phone. With the Galaxy Note 2, I used the settings in this thread in the Note 2 section to allow me to tether more than the 500mb included with my data plan.
When I got the GS4, those same settings didn't work. I did some tinkering with the settings with this app on my GS4, and I've managed to get it working again.
In order for it to work, I highly recommend using a VPN on your phone so that all data is encrypted, hiding it from T-Mobile's sniffing to see if you're using a desktop browser. I use Private Internet Access to accomplish this, and have had no problems using their app running on my phone while tethering. I'm sure you can use other free alternatives, such as Hotspot Shield VPN, but I prefer PIA.
The settings I'm using are as follows:
Device-Profile: Samsung Galaxy S3
Setup-Method: Hostapd (master)
Wifi Encryption Enabled
Wireless Channel 1
MSS clamping enabled
Routing fix enabled
Disable Wake-Lock enabled (aka, check the box)
You need root access for this to work
I've attached the version of the mod I'm using, I'm using Version 3.2-beta2-modv5 ***Synergized***, which I pulled straight from my Note 2 and installed on my GS4. If you want to download it yourself, the Note 2 post I mentioned above directs here as the place to get the mod.
Step by step instructions:
BE ROOTED.
If you have not updated to the May 7th OTA update, rooting takes about 5 minutes and just a couple clicks. Follow the steps in this post.
If you have updated to the OTA, it's a few more steps. Root the OTA update using the steps here
Install and configure Hotspot Shield VPN, or your VPN service of choice
Download and install the tether mod (either download attached file in OP, or follow the link to download from the other post)
Open tether mod, press menu, settings
Configure the options mentioned in original post
Run your VPN app before starting the tether.
Start tethering

Hotspot = tether - no difference.
The reference to the 500mb limit is new - but have they throttled you yet? If not, just keep on trucking.
If they have, you might consider trying one of the custom ROM's that have native tethering build in. Or, maybe first try the APN Backup and Restore App. It has a modified APN that has worked well for me on the Stock ROM.

Got it yesterday as well using custom rom with tether built in and hotspot shield vpn app. Did T-Mobile find the loophole?
What I meant was that I was using the "wifi tether for root users" app and not the stock "t mobile hotspot" I know hotspot and tether is the same thing lol
Anyways.. today it said I hit my limit of 500MB and ive never used the stock hotspot app just the "wifi for root users"
So now I dont have wifi in my laptop and I have homework to turn in
Just to let you know I used cyanogenmod which has wifi tethering built in and thats when I hit the limit
What do you mean APN? how do I do that? Much help would be appreciated

He/she is talking about this app. But "NOTE: Starting with Android 4.0/ICS, 3rd Party apps don't have access to write APN settings, hence this app no longer works for restoring APN backups as a normal app. You can convert it to a System app using Titanium Backup on a rooted phone and use. Instructions:
- Open Titanium Backup
- Go to backup/restore tab
- Find APN Backup & Restore on the list
- Long press on the app when you find it
- Select Convert to system app
- Open APN Backup & Restore
- Click menu and disable ICS check
But... @gaww I really don't see how this can help. How would one use a "modified APN" if no backup is created. The app is only a backup/restore app if im not mistaken...
I say we both use it and see if that can fix the problem?

- Select Convert to system app
- Open APN Backup & Restore
- Click menu and disable ICS check
But... @gaww I really don't see how this can help. How would one use a "modified APN" if no backup is created. The app is only a backup/restore app if im not mistaken...

Hey did you try it out? And if you did, did it work?

He/she is talking about this app. But "NOTE: Starting with Android 4.0/ICS, 3rd Party apps don't have access to write APN settings, hence this app no longer works for restoring APN backups as a normal app. You can convert it to a System app using Titanium Backup on a rooted phone and use. Instructions:
- Open Titanium Backup
- Go to backup/restore tab
- Find APN Backup & Restore on the list
- Long press on the app when you find it
- Select Convert to system app
- Open APN Backup & Restore
- Click menu and disable ICS check

The developer of the app also created a modified APN which need to be downloaded and put in the AppBackupRestore folder after you have installed the app per the above. I recommend backing up the stock APN(s).

The above link might work now. I tried to simply attach it to my response, but the XDA upload popup said error - invalid file.

Does your LTE work with this custom APN?
Don't think so but no way to know. It is an act of God that I even get 4g in western North Carolina - lol.
One more thing. When used with stock ROM, could not turn on tethering with Stock settings - had to install and use Tethering Widget to turn it on and off. I was able to turn it on and off with regular settings on custom ROMs though.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda premium.

Some pages would load, some wouldn't
I rooted my phone then I Installed Wifi tether for root users and Hideman (gives 4 free hours per day of VPN service).
First turn on the Hideman
Second turn on the Wifi tether
third surf the web (do we still say that)
I Verified with the t-mobile data and it all is going toward my unlimited plan instead of the 500mb hotspot they give.
