I’m trying to find the best app to tether my tablet. I’ve got an ASUS Transformer Prime and it’s WiFi only, no 3G/4G so I’m trying to find the best way to share my internets from my Samsung Galaxy SII. I found this great app called FoxFi but for some reason I can’t just turn my phone into a hotspot and use my Transformer to connect via WiFi. I have to use a companion app on my tablet called PdaNet Tablet and it connect via Bluetooth! I don’t understand how it works, but it is very cool. The only downside is I can only seem to browse the web with connection. If I try to use the mail app or even access the Google Play store, it won’t connect. The only thing it will let me do is surf the net. Long story short, there’s a ton of apps out there, and without wasting my money trying them all I was hoping I could get some feedback here from people who’ve used apps with better success. Any input is welcome, thanks!

FoxFi, but I am still using EL29
PdaNet "free version" will not let you go into secure sites, you need to pony up for that.

Wifi Tether or Barnacle Wifi tether. Bother work very well.Wifi tether shows up on our Market so thats the way to go! I will say if your tethering to a computer Get a older version of pda net 3.0 It is unrestricted. You can get the windows install file too. Google it. You charge phone while tethering.
Sprint HotSpot.

Some wifi devices can't see adhoc hotspots. Many tethering or hotspot apps can only go into that mode because of the phones limitations. The hotspot app that comes with the phone usually is infrastructure mode. Everything can connect to that. In simple terms, adhoc is like internet connection sharing from a computer. Infrastructure mode is like a wireless router. You could look if someone has a modified wpa supplicant file for the tablet if it can't see the phone. Then it will work. I had to do that to my old galaxy tab in order to connect to the net through the phone.
Yeah I went into settings in my E4GT, and there's a Bluetooth tether option that works great for my tablet. A little slow, but better than nothing. Thanks for the input everyone!
Which wifi tether app from the market are you guys talking about? I just got a galaxy tab 2 7.0 and want to tether it from my epic 4g touch. When i search the market, there are a couple of wifi tether apps but I don't know which one to use. I am not rooted by the way. I just want to tether 3g/4g when I'm at work on my break because I don't want to use company's wifi network.
Foxfi
I've used wifi tether and foxfi. Only difference is u have to pay for the full version of foxfi. But wifi tether doesn't work on some versions. Worked on fi27 but doesn't on fk23

I see a couple of "wifi tether" name in the app store but which one of those are you guys talking about? "wifi tether for root users" by muller? "wifi hotspot/wifi tether" by innodroapps? "wifi tether" by pontente mobile? Also, for foxfi full version, it says that i need the free version first but i can't find that in the google play store.
WiFi Tether version 3.2-beta2
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I'm not rooted. Is there one where I don't have to root?
Also, if I do root, will my phone still be secured?
wondering if there is a better USB tether app for ICS,
The team that made the wife tether, had a USB tether that worked great for Ginger Bread, but was never ported to ICS :|

I have seen many posts regarding the tethering and hotspot on T-mobile, as it is only available on the data plans that are not unlimited. T-mobile blocks most tethering and hotspot apps but there are some ways to get around this. Most ways to avoid purchasing the tethering plan require root. However, this one does not. After a lot of searching I finally found a solution. The only con of this is that it does not support hotspot, only USB tethering. It is compatible with Mac OS, Windows OS, and Ubuntu OS. I am still searching for an update that will allow this to work with Chrome OS as I just purchased a Google Chromebook. This is a great feature while you are on the go, or do not have an internet connection at home.
The first step to the process is to download the Android app from the google Play Store. It is called ClockworkMod Tether. The app is free for 14 days. Once the 14 days is up, you will be able to purchase the full edition for $4.99. The upgrade is in app only, so you must download the free version first. Why wouldn't you anyways?
Once you have downloaded the app, as you will notice when you open it, you will need to download the app for your computer. It will ask you to open the app on your computer to get started. There is an app as well as a driver that is needed for this. In order to get the driver, you will need to visit clockworkmod.com. You can visit the site from your computer or your phone, which is convenient if you don't already have internet access. You will then need to click tether drivers at the top of the screen. It will take you to a list of makes of phones such as Motorola, Samsung, etc. Obviously, being the Samsung Galaxy s III, you are going to click the samsung drivers link. After it is downloaded, if you are using your computer, simply open the file and install it. If you have downloaded it to your SIII, you will need to connect your phone to your computer, find the file in the folder clockworkmod, and install it.
After everything is installed, you can open the app in your phone and turn on the tethering. After you have done this, open the program (which should also be installes from the clockworkmod folder) and click start. It will configure and it should say connected after a few seconds. Then, open your browser and you should be online!
I just discovered this and so far it is working GREAT! I got booted off once, not really sure what happened. But I turned off the tethering through the app first, then through the computer and restarted it all again and all is good. Hope this helps everyone looking for the answer! I will post again when I discover a way to use hotspot for free with no root.

Man that hot spot shield app worked like a charm
I did NOT create this app and only take credit for finding and testing it.
So far this is the ONLY WiFi Tether app I tried that works on my T-Mobile Galaxy S4.
I tested it by linking to my Asus TF700 tablet.
1-Click WiFi Tether No Root is a FREE app available on Google Play Store.
Best of all, it does not require ANY tinkering with profile settings.
Just install it,
run it,
click ON
and then search for the WiFi signal from your other portable device or PC.
My Asus tablet found the signal and locked on in less than 5 seconds.
Note: There is also a Pro version available for $9.98 that offers WPA security if you need or want that added feature.
If you appreciate my find, simply click THANKS so I know this wasn't a wasted thread post!

Use firefox with an addon called User Agent Switcher set to android and you'll be fine.
The way T-Mobile tries to stop you from tethering without paying extra (which is total bs by the way) is by sniffing out user agents from things that aren't androids.

I'll quote exactly what it says on my T-Mobile Galaxy S4 (model SGH-M919) when I clicked the Help menu about using Wi-Fi hotspot:
"To use your phone's hotspot capability, you must have the Smartphone Mobile HotSpot service added to your rate plan."
They key word here is "added" which means it is NOT free unlimited hotspot service.
Here's what it says on the T-Mobile website page about this service:
"T-Mobile's Simple Choice Rate Plans all include Smartphone Mobile HotSpot up to their data limit, except for Unlimited 4G data which includes 500MB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot. You can add additional capped Smartphone Mobile HotSpot usage: $10 per month per line for 3GB or $20 per month for 4GB."
The FREE app I mention in the OP is FREE. Whether or not T-Mobile can & will
be able to monitor the use of the 1-Click free app is yet to be determined.

Anyone else try and just fire it up anyway? My first generation MyTouch4G had free Hotspot. On my new S4 I turned it on and got the above message but it still created a hotspot and didn't require me to commit to a plan change. However my laptop doesn't even see it and my old MyTouch sees but fails to connect.
Downloaded and tried that app. No luck. Laptop sees the Wifi and connected but no internet access (Limited or no connectivity) Old Mytouch saw it but was unable to connect.

Found a solution to tmobiles user agent sniffer .
**Must be rooted for this to work * *
Steps:
1. Get TrevE Mod tether app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34037922
(you will not get a internet connection using any other tether app while using the VPN app)
2. Get Hotspot Shield VPN

(was mentioned in earlier post but couldn't get it to work)
3. Start Hotspot Shield VPN and connect
4. Start TrevE Mod Tether app
Problems?
Hotspot Shield does not connect or you get error 1028?
Get Tun.Ko from market and install it
Repeat step 3 and 4

I've been using Cyber Ghost as my free VPN and it's very decent. I've been considering paying for Private Internet Access, at $40 for a year with good reviews.
PIA is pretty awesome. very fast, both ping and down/up speeds. the vpn only adds approximately 30ms.
for free vpn on the phone, hideninja vpn works very well. pro version has more locations (like uk for bbc iPlayer). and it's supposedly lifetime vpn.
using jellybeer on an i317 with a $70 unlimited tmobile prepaid sim.
---------- Post added at 01:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:04 PM ----------
this is with PIA. the up was a little slow on this test. it's usually 10-20mbps. ping and down speed are normal. some servers are better at certain times. very easy to switch with viscosity for mac. i start the normal tether (settings>more>tethering&portablehotspot>portablehotspot) with no vpn on my phone (with a cm10.1 based rom), and then start the vpn on the computer. i didn't even know about the upsell message until i flashed a touchwiz rom.
So, picked up a kindle fire hd 7, and figured i'd give this a shot finally.
Running rooted stock, setup and execution was a breeze following the op tutorial.
I tried to get tethering added to my plan, but they said i'd lose my current awesome unlimited plan to get tethering added...so xda to the rescue.
Thanks!
Sprung for PIA. Here's a representative speed test with and wzithohut.d

Why do you get errors in YouTube using user-agent switching? I use user-agent spoofing with Chrome and can use YouTube, NetFlix and HuluPlus with no problems and no speed issues that often arise when using a VPN service. I can even play online action games while connected to LTE with 30-40ms pings. All this without any VPN use.

I used chrome with user agent switcher and every time I went to youtube I would get "can not play video at this time" also problems with any https website . That why I made this tutorial . Plus Tmobile can see you tether when you use a user agent other than an Android user agent . They also send the annoying text when they see you thether . Vpn prevents all that plus I don't appreciate TMO eyeing my internet traffic . If any one has problems with speeds using a vpn I would suggest setting up and ssh server . Strange, none of those issues ever occur using my methods described in my thread. I don't get texts from tmo so I don't think they monitor activity in the manor you mentioned or I would have been notified long before I hit the 200 gig mark. I've used somewhere around 250 over the last few months. No notifications, no throttling, no problem. I am interested in the ssh server, however. That tutorial would be great. Thanks for your input as it helps us both further our understanding of tmo's network.

This was normal when using the stock tethering app. However in Blops2 I am unable to connet to a game, it will put me into a searching lobby, it will just keep trying to find a game.. anyone else seen this?
Worst case I can just use the native app for xbox and this for computer tethering.

I want to know how to tether to ps3 without using the 500mb of hotspot data
So I went to the (how to guide) here and it describes how to get it with the wifi tether app and being rooted... well ive done that mate.... and I check my t-mobile account and it still uses my 2.5 gigs of free wifi tethering.... is there another way?

If you already have a plan with free tethering what exactly do you expect from this? If you use data, it's going to show up on your account as being used whether you are tethering or not.
I don't expect anything I just thought the WiFi tethering would show up on on my data plan which is unlimited. My tether plan is only 2.5 gigs plan. It does the same as the stock hotspot tethering. Which in turn renders that app "WiFi tethering" useless. Its no big deal just asking the guide said he could use unlimited WiFi tether and T-Mobile didn't charge him for unlimited use... that wasnt the case for me....

It works for all data going in and out of your phone. And it all depends on which vpn you choose. A lot of free ones slow down data speeds to keep it free. Paid ones do not.

If your with Tmobile... use the my tmobole account app
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
STEP 1
"STOCK ROM"
-download "1 click tether" from the market...this will force the internal tethering to turn on
OR
Run an AOSP rom, internal tethering is unlocked in aosp roms
STEP 2
once youve figured out step one, you should be able to tether, whether on aosp or tw ,it dont matter....only problem is, tmobile will soon block you because of your user agent on the computer
so you have two options...
1. download a browser on your computer that supports changing your user agent...chrome, firefox...ect...change the user agent to something other than windows...you can now use unlimited tethering on your browser.
NOW.....This will only give internet to the browser, not the computer globally...The only way to get global tethering on every program on the pc you'd have to set up a VPN...via the phone or via pc...VPN's are usually not free thou
My setup
-Running CM10 ROM
-Using the internal tethering option in the rom
-I use google chrome
-In google chrom i use this extension called "user agent switcher" https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher/lkmofgnohbedopheiphabfhfjgkhfcgf
-everytime i open google chrome i change the user agent to "safari on mac"
DONE
Yes try vpn hideman.
