Hey Guys..
I have a Desire here in my Hands with a strange type of Brick.. (at least one I've never seen before) ..
It just does not react to anything at all. The battery is charged and I tested with another cell to be sure that is not the trivial cause.
No Bootloader, No HTC Logo, No reactions at all..
Did happen while flashing a Froyo 2.2 Rom + Radio + App2SD (from the xda forums) via ClockworkMod Recovery but I wasn't there to witness the actual Flash.
After flashing the device hung desperately in a screen with the robot in front of a box with an arrow .. looked like unpacking or so, but wasn't doing anything at all for at least half an hour.
Then battery removed -> Brick.
Anyone got any Idea?

I suspect you removed the battery whilst it was flashing the radio. This is insta-brick territory and as far as I'm aware there is no cure other than sending it in to HTC.
Regards,
Dave
If you can access fastboot as opposed to bootloader you might be talking failing that back to HTC it goes
if your phone can not turn off whilst holding either volume down or the back button then yeah it's a brick, send it off to htc, just say it overheated and wont turn on again

The battery was removed after flashing and rebooting.
Installed in the following order:
32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04.zip
LeeDrOiD_V1.2b.zip
942_desire_froyo_a2sd-signed.zip
every process seemed to work normal, no error happened.
Then rebooted the Desire and the "Box with Android-Bot" Screen appeared.. this hung for 30 min or more when I could not think of any other solution than removing the battery to reset..
After this -> nothing.
I suppose as you say it has to do something with the Radio ROM..
Been coming from OpenDesire 1.6b - every flash ran perfectly up to this point.
Damn, I think this one has to go back to HTC.
Is there any possibility to unbrick a phone thats not responding at all?
Could HTC be aware of the modifications or will they really just go with the "overheated and won't turn on again" explanation?
Thanks for your help so far guys!
Yea, the little Droid with the box thing is during a radio flash and you should never pull the battery during that as it does result in a brick.
Can you reach fastboot as mentioned up above?
..tried pressing the "back" button with the power button and the vol-down button together with the power button..
even did the "insert the battery while holding the button" method..
I don't think I can get the thing to Fastboot..
But I will look further into this and try..
..
Has anyone had a Radio Brick and sent this to HTC before?
Is the repair covered by warranty?
Do you guys think they even get this is no real HW failure?

I know someone who sent their phone back with a pretty much identical issue and the phone was fixed under warranty no problem.
Regards,
Dave
yay!
you know, even one post of you telling me it went allright for another guy is a big relief..
EDIT: just wanted to let you know I tried invoking fastboot via usb and the android PC tools..
just keeps waiting for the device.. and waiting ..
..will analyse USB traffic in general to conclude if there is a little itsy bit of life left in the phone, but I think this is a dead end too.
thank u all for ur help i have managed to unlock the phone as described
thanks alot every1
saifiraq: You seem to have stumbled in the wrong thread or could we help by coincidence?
..UPDATE:
Did usb-sniffer analysis while pulling battery, trying to turn on, plugging usb in etc.
NOTHING at all..
My baby is on it's way to HTC now.. wish me luck guys!
Tried couple different roms, factory resets, full wipe etc, Phone is still rebooting itself after even 2 min usage on google maps, navigation
Is there a point to unroot the phone, come back to 2.1 ruu to find out or maybe the phone need to be send back for repair?
Thanks Guys

It's a damn common problem on Desire. Also i have the same problem. When the phone try to connect to 3G network go in crash. Also i tried more times full wipe, hard reset, RUU. Nothing. The issue is HARDWARE. The only way is the substition og the phone (or of the motherboard).
Good Luck
Same for mine. Sent to HTC for repair
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thanks Guys, That's what I thought but didn't like to put it through my mind,
One me thing: Do I need to raise a query on htc website? And of course unroot the phone to stock

Yup, same here. I've allready sent my device for repair and now waiting for new device. It's hardware issue.
Regards, X.
My desire kept restarting whilst using open desire and dj Droid Rom. Since I've switched back to official 2.1 stock Rom not rooted my phones not rebooted once. So I'm not sure if its always a hardware related thing. Hmmm

Probably you have bootloader 0.80
Try with stock ROM 1.21.XXXXXX
It's was ok for me
My Desire would soft-reset at least once daily on the stock 2.1 ROM. Switching to Cyanogen has fixed that. Which I was surprised to find.

THANK YOU!
I think someone should put this info into the sticky topic, there is nothing to mention that you need this specific ruu to unroot 0.0 bootloader...
I will test the phone now to see if the reboots are still in th case...
Could anyone who send their phone away tell me how long would take to get the phne fix in uk? can they provide a replacement or up to us to bother?
Ta
I've noticed that mine will reboot constantly after I flash a new ROM.
However, I don't think it's the flashing that is the issue. See after a wipe and flash I usually sign into Google to get sync my contacts and calendar.
Since 2.2 the phone tries to automatically download apps from the market.
If I'm using HSPA (3G) to download while the phone is plugged in and charging I will 100% of the time get constant reboots until I physically remove the battery.
Even then, if I remove the charger and try the phone will keep rebooting. I usually end up having to charge the battery while the phone is off then remove the charger. It will then usually work with no issue or random reboots.
I've tested this when I'm using Wi-Fi - Never a reboot issue.
Also tested using extensive 3G (soon after flash) without charger plugged in. Phone will sometimes (maybe 25% of the time) go into a boot loop with each reboot occurring within a few minutes of each startup.
It's no secret that the phone gets hot when using 3G to download a lot of data. For some reason this is compounded after each flash.
I use syspanel to monitor battery temps and in the situations described above where the phone starts constantly rebooting the temps are around 36c - 38c. I'm not exactly sure because it reboots before I can get accurate temp.
I question syspanel accuracy because it feels bloody hot! Temps are normally usually around 22 - 27c and it feels cool to the touch. Hard to believe 10c can make that much difference.
Could this be a hardware design, like how CPUs will throttle once a certain temp is reached to prevent damage? Or maybe thermal paste (is that even used in phones?) not properly applied to some component on the PCB.
Perhaps others can comment on their battery temps. Sounds like that's the issue if maps and navigation (data + battery intensive) cause reboots.
Also, as mentioned by someone else I can't remember (sorry to the poster) after I update or restore Launcher Pro my battery drain becomes ridiculous (I've lost 100% in 4 hrs). Quick reboot after update or restore solves the drain.
Now the phone is running stock rom and radio,
Tried google maps today, and it only last for about 2 min before reboot, when the phone is in normal usage like calls and texts I never had a reboot,
Must be a overheating components, like you said thermal paste or something.
Tonite i will give them a phone and the courier to pick it up.
Do you think guys is worth to mention about mainboard? that will need to be replace or just mention overheating issues and constant reboots?
Do they provide a replacement unit for the time being?
Thanks all

That's exactly the issue I had - could replicate a reboot within minutes of Google Maps use. I also believe this to be a heat/paste issue, as the unit got incredibly hot (on one occasion almost too hot to pick up).
Mine was replaced as being faulty (with Virgin in the UK) after I recited several forums and a google search to the operative. You might be able to get this with Three if you push for it but Virgin are the only ones I know of actually replacing the handsets (FYI thier callcentre staff seem to know thier stuff).
I will miss my desire Courier will pick it up tomorrow and God knows how long it will take to get it fixed!!
Customer Service was excellent so far, the guy even said that this is actually quite a common issue with Desire( too much power inside such a small device)
Hopefully I'll get a new motherboard!
Thanks guys for all your help! Now is the time to start up OLD grandpa Sony Ericcson for the time being...
Reboot with GPS and Charging
Hi
I have send my desire for repair, because it reboots every time i use navigation and charging at same time. Navigation alone dosn't reboot.
I tried to reinstall, but HTC would let me have the file to try to rewrite the ROM.
I try to times to clear the phone several times, but now i just wait to see if they will find the problem or just rewrite the ROM.

Hi all, the very best noob is posting here
I was enjoying the last AuraxTSense rom (AuraxTSense_8.3_Official_OTA_2.2_FRF91_A2SD +...) installed on 29/01. The display is SLCD. The mobile is branded, so I created-and-used a gold card. Everything was perfect until this morning when I noticed that the display was black and there was no way to come up with an image, or text ... (it's almost black, actually I can see that lights just barely).
Since the installation of the rom was successful, I do not think that the phone is bricked, but It's a supposition. Or not?
As described on forums, I've installed the rom RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed to try to recover the mobile: I can hear the sound, the cell vibrates, ... but no more as in the beginning.
Any ideas?
Thank you!
would you mind giving some additional info like does the LED turn on, if plugged in to a charger? Does it turn on, if plugged into a computer?
Can you boot into fastboot(vol down + power)?
Did you do anything special before this happened?
How did you flash the ruu(from zip file or via computer)? Did any errors occour?
Also why would you try to flash a ruu, when you had no idea what was wrong or what you were doing? You might just have ruined it more. There is no way to know, but as it was able to run the ruu, apparently nothing was wrong.
Thank you for the reply.

The mobile charges with charger, and USB cable attached on the PC: while charging, the LED is orange.
When off, I can power it up using the power button: the mobile vibrates and after ~25 seconds I can hear the start sound. After ~10 seconds the home+menu+back+src button lights go on for some seconds.
The display, since the start-up vibration, becames barely lighted. While the mobile is powered on, if not used, after some time the display becomes dark and I can resume its lighting pressing the power button.
While the mobile is on, if I plug the USB cable in the PC a new drive appears; it's an empty (0 bytes size) drive - I have no SD in.
Can you boot into fastboot(vol down + power)?

I cannot say this because I cannot see anything, but when I boot with (vol down + power) the mobile does not vibrate.
BTW I can boot with (power+back), as I have used the RUU executable to flash and it worked.

Just followed the instructions seen on another blog/forum.
I can say that the behaviour of the mobile after the RUU update is the same of before.
Thank you.
to me that sounds like a hardware (backlight) fault...
But how could you flash the wwe-Ruu? Your handset was branded, wasnt it? Did you use the goldcard to flash the ruu? Remember to flash the original (=branded) ruu before you send it in for repair (if you do so)

Yes, I flashed using the goldcard; it was working very well!
The last app I installed was juice defender, the full version, updated two days ago from the market.
I'm trying with the link proposed by madman_cro, it's now in download.
Thank you.
2 things... would it not have been better to post in the AuraxTsense page lol? I've used 8.3 since release and its near perfect, sounds like a hardware error.... screen maybe gone? There was a spate of HTC screen problems
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I have had this happen twice on Auraxtsense. Both times removing the battery for 30 secs and then replacing and rebooting solved the issue. It eventually came back to life.
In your case it could be a hardware failure ......
Im trying to flash the rom proposed by madman_cro, but today is a bad day: update fails with ERROR 170
Yes AuraxTsense is a great rom, with no doubt! I'm not considering the rom as the origin of the problem, but it would be nice to discover what's wrong in my mobile
In the case it's an hardware problem, I've asked HTC for assitance...
(PS: I have had no way to post in the AuraxTsense page as this is my first post)

As you say yourself this sounds like a hw error, and such it has nothing to do with auraxtsense, so why the hell should he post it in there.
But it does indeed sound like a hw error. So you will probably have to ask htc, if the prober ruu doesn't solve it. Also slcd brick only happens after flashing a wrong rom/bootloader, so it should not possibly appear out of nowhere.

Why the hell would he do that? Because at that stage a hardware fault was suggested but not confirmed ... so why the hell not?
If it was a problem with the rom like he thought it could be, that would of been a good starting point!
I had the same thing happen with a Blackstone (Touch HD)
Don't know if this is any help, but I had exactly the same thing happen with my old Touch HD. There was a util I found that allowed me to view the phone screen and drive it via my pc through the USB port. This helped in making sure that the only issue was a lack of display, and flashing and returning to stock before sending off for repair. Not too sure if there's something similar for the Desire.
The problem was initially diagnosed as a loose connection within the phone, and the repair center fixed it and sent it back to me. A couple of weeks later exactly the same thing happened. After replacing the mainboard on the second repair visit it was all fixed and worked well (until I fed it too much voltage from a charger, but that's another story). I'd suggest that claiming this experience as your own and requesting a mainboard replacement up front may be the best way to avoid too many service visits.
You'll know that they have replaced the mainboard as they'll issue you with a new IMEI.
selling it on ebay
Thank you all! My experience with support services in Italy and the fact that the phone has been rooted/flashed, have persuaded me to put it on ebay, as is. I still haven't found the solution, so I don't know if it's an hardware problem or something else. In the doubt, I'm selling it as not working.

Although most people have said this is a hardware error (I'm inclined to think the same) have you actually tried to hard reset the phone just incase a setting is messed up somewhere and is actually displaying at 0% backlight. Very likely it won't work but is at least worth a shot before you get rid of it on Ebay
trying again
Hi warlordxxx, having the possibility to use another phone (do you remember the 7650? ) I removed the desire from ebay and I'm now trying to best discover what's happened, as I think it's not an hardward problem too.
I'm following the directions posted on the androidiani.it forum: maybe my problem it's just a video driver problem. I will let you know the result of the operations.
Have a nice week.
My friend is running CM 7 on his Tmobile G2.
He was describing that yesterday was acting weird with market downloads.
Here is what he he emailed me on what happened.
the phone was acting normal throughout my day until the evening towards the night, i noticed it failed to finish downloading the update for google earth along with google maps. the phone was fine, and then i pulled it out of my pocket a few times and saw multiple times that it was randomly turned off. i would turn it back on and it would still give me the same issue. when i got home and plugged it in to charge, it would boot and then get to the main home screen telling me that google maps is downloading to update. however the update would be frozen, and a few seconds later the phone would freeze altogether, forcing me to turn it off by pulling out the battery. this happened about 4 times, and now has reached the point that it has become a brick and refuses to turn on or show the charging light
any suggestions on what might be wrong with the phone? Thanks in advance. Im running Cm7 on my phone and never experienced this issue.
same happend to me 3days ago, phone running then freezed... bootloop after batterypull... recovery worked for 2 times but had problems with flashing new rom/backing up -> errors with cache partition...
after 4hours of letting it stay off -> it wont turn on again und wont charge (no LED)
tried it with another dz battery+charger... no change... i wrote htc and they answered within 1hr that i have to send it in without battery...
i guess its a known problem (or why wouldnt they want to have me sending in charger+battery .. if its a power-on problem..)
there are semibrick threads here and in other forums.. but they all don't suffer from the power on problem... so i guess i did the right thing sending it in
edit: never had heat issues, never had random reboots, no overclock, no indication of an update from any app did any harm to my phone, running cm7 for 3 weeks without any problems, no hboot flash, no radio flash ... nothing that would indicate a risk of brick (according to guides & forum threads)... first htc that ever failed for me ;(
Thanks for the reply. I will forward it to my friend. I think he is going to try to exchange it at the store and if it all fails we are going to try HTC.
have any of you tried to boot into recovery? did you have eng-hboot on your devices? go to #g2root
its complete dead as in dead... no LED light, no turn on, no hboot mode (or what its called when you press vol+power key).... i dont have a g2 but a unbranded european dz.. hboot and radio was never touched by me
Similar thing happened to me. My phone kept frozing on me running cm7..was fine for a week though.
So I booted into recovery..wiped cache, factory reset flashed another rom got bunch of erros recovery thing rebooted stuck i n htc logo for like 20min yanked out battery rebooted and it never rebooted back. No hboot,no nothing.
My light indicator still worked though but no hboot or anything.. got a new one now have to send the old one back to tmobile but I'm scared that they're gonna charge me for removing void stickers.
Even though I checked twice that removing void sticker won't avoid warranty according to tmobile customer chat sevice..
So I'm thinking about swiping out the sticker that contains serial number and such on back of our phone with the old one and tell them the new one came without a void sticker lolol
Sorry I got way off topic rofl..

We went to the store today and exchanged it for another g2. The guy didnt ask any questions and exchanged it happily for a new one.
This very same thing happened to me today. Updated to CM 7.0.3 from 7.0.1 and the phone was freezing when installing items from the market. Pulled the battery and the phone was stuck on the boot animation. Pulled the battery again, and now it will not start at all. No charging light, no nothing. Had more than 50% charge, and now it seems entirely unresponsive. I can't use the power w/ volume button technique either, because the phone does not respond.
Seems like somehow I have bricked the phone, or the phone just coincidentally died just after updating to CM 7.0.3? (seems unlikely)
just a short update on my case:
i got the mobile back from HTC repairs.
they exchanged my "mainboard" (changed IMEI) under warranty.
i don't know what emmc chip i had before cause it died so fast, but my usb deviceIDs changed completely and are now simmilar to the ones in the cm wiki.
my current emmc is now:

Hi,
I'm genuinely sorry if this is an often repeated thread, but I couldn't find anyone here suffering from exactly the same symptons as me.
I've had my One X for a couple of months, it's completely unrooted and has nothing on it you can't get from Google's app market. I'm with Orange, in the UK, so the phone's running all their default stuff.
My phone's been running quite hot ever since I got it, but, today, I had it in my pocket while I drove to work (20) minutes, and it must have overheated and turned itself off.
I couldn't turn it on, and, in my panic, I held the power button for ten seconds, and saw the buttons at the bottom flash. Since then, nothing at all, no charging light (from USB or mains). I've tried all combinations of power/volume button presses and absolutely nothing has happened at all. Nothing at all since the first button flashes on the first long power button press (10 seconds). Now, it's been like that for about 8 hours and has been on and off charge all day, to no avail. (no LED at all, at any point, red nor green).
I've just got back from holiday and have a tonne of pictures and vids I have probably lost, but want to try to recover. I'd be really, really grateful for the assistance of the experienced people here. I'm, as you may have picked up, a hopeless newb.
When I connect via laptop to USB, the computer (Windows 7) detects an APX device, whatever that is, but the automated driver installation fails. Nothing shows up in Windows explorer.
Is there anything I/You/We can do?
My last resort is to send it back to Orange, and ask if they can retrieve data, but I expect they'll just send a new phone and wipe/refurbish my old one for someone else.
Is it possible to send phones back to HTC for repair, without losing data?
And finally, although I've not seen anything on the screen at all, no bootloaders, no recovery screen, nothing, might some combinatin of my button-mashing have already wiped the phone?
On a scale of One to OH DEAR...how screwed am I?
Please help me, XDA!
Edit: Ah, I can see it as a device, actually. Shows up as an "APX Device", but I can't do anything with it.
Did you press power + volume up?
If so, it's in "bricked state" now and only HTC can recover it.

Yeah, I think once I tried everything else I tried that.
Is this what NVFlash can get around on other phones, but not the One X?
Assuming that's what I have done, will HTC be able to recover my personal data? I don't care about app-data, just photos and vids.
Should I go through HTC directly, or through my mobile network/carrier? The phone should still be in warranty, it's only a couple of months old.
Edit: Although, one thing to add to that is that at no point, apart from the very first 10-second power button press, did anything happen on the phone at all. If that makes any difference, at all.
I had a chat to an HTC customer services bod, who said that even if they can recover data during a phone repair they automatically wipe it, due to the Data Protection Act (UK).
Anyone happen to know if you can waive your right to data portection in certain instances?

trust me, backup and restore, even if you waived your rights and htc confirmed they wouldn't wipe it, i guarantee you 100% you would still get a phone back that has been wiped.

I know you're probably spot on there. It's potentially more trouble to HTC than it's worth, to go messing with personal data.
But, my phone's all but dead. I can't backup and restore.
Unless I can figure out how to make sense of this "APX" device detection thing.
Can I still somehow root my phone, if the only "access" I ahve to it is seeing it as an APX device? I can't do anything with it. I can't get into the bootloader to unlock it to allow rooting.
Or can I?
would a battery pull prompt the phone to start normally again possibly? The phone isn't hard to open, but htc will probably know if it has been since you might make a mess of some of the glue and shields in there.
Edit: Did you ever enter your dropbox details into your OneX? because it should have auto camera upload on by default. Check your camera upload folder of your dropbox on the web if so.
This may be useful for the s off development. It seems overheat protection may trigger apx

If I get desperate enough I might try pulling it open....
I never setup Dropbox, unfortunately. Nice idea though, and I sure as hell will next time.
If my phone's death can further the cause of open One X's for all, then I'm all for it. At this point, I'd pay someone to try and get my data off, too.
If someone wants to talk me through trying to access it in this "apparent" APX mode, I'm up for experimenting.
unfortunately I am also in the same situation,
my HTC OneX has a MIUI ROM, and today while I was playing it is locked, I pressed for 5 seconds the power button and the phone will go off at the time of restart anything! black screen and each function has ceased to work!
the strange thing is that for some time the FlashBoot worked, now no longer even that!
someone has found a solution to at least access to the memory to retrieve the data?
please help me

Put your phone on wall charger for 5-7 hours and then press power button + volume down button until the Bootloader shows up...
However, if you can't access the Bootloader even now... Your screwed. ..
I had the same situation.mine was flashed in a wrong firmware then it stuck in a bootloop.but when i tried to charge it for two hours in order to flash RUU, the device went extremely hot, it's late when I noticed it.After removing the usb charger, from then on my device doesnt power on.no sign of life after all.
