go ahead and vote for the sony xperia s as most hackable phone on xda 2012 holiday guide , the lg nexus 4 is about to i=win for the xperia s , don't let it and vote , just go to the upper left corner and select hackable phone and vote for the sony xperia s
But it's not... Because I was unfortunate enough to buy my Xperia S on a network, I'm completely locked out of ever unlocking the bootloader and installing custom roms. My network says to ask Sony, while Sony tell me to ask my network. Such a hackable phone!

I got my ION & X10 for free through at&t. But my ION is also unlockable. However I would have never been able to buy the $550 phone unlocked. This information has NOT been hidden. Everyone knows when you buy subsidised there is a chance you may never get it unlocked. If you want a fully unlockable phone you have to pay full price.
And as for the nexus 4, at least the S is being AOSP maintained by Sony. The N4 may not have any maintenance for AOSP. Just like the S they both have proprietary driver issues, but no word from LG about any development.
Also Sony was voted OEM of the year here @ xda. Their new support for after market development is a move most OEM's won't likely make.

Sorry Jaramie but you ate wrong.
A network locked phone is JUST that, you are not able to use other networks. In any way is referred that bootloader is locked or not. If not, explain how come some networks allow unlocking bl.
The only question with locked bootloaders is with warranty.
You want to talk about prices? Galaxy s2 and 3 are equal or more expensive that xsperia s... And are hackable, locked or unlocked to network. My previous Huawei was more hackable than Sony.
Sony has an amazing security feature that blocks you to flash custom kernels into your phone... so it should be the most Unhackable brand, not the opposite.
And with that in mind: Xperia S is not, in any universe, the most hackable phone.
PS: I can't understand the excitement to make campaigns to vote for a phone. To be the first on a poll will get you exactly what?!

Can't unlock AT&T Play
Just go the AT&T play, and can't unlock the bootloader using the instructions on here nor on the official sonyericson instructions. Basically, can't get into fastboot mode at all, using search button and usb plugin as instructed.
There are two dudes on there forums that can do the bootloader unlock. I think its like $24usd. I'm gonna do mine payday (Friday). Pretty sure once you unlock the bootloader, the root should be easy. Look in the general section those dudes are in there.

Can he also do AT&T?
yes he can, he just did it for me last night. Was fast and easy, he even helped root it and answered any other questions i had.
Do i have to physically send the phone?
I am new to android (jumping off the iphone train) but i was under the impression that it wouldn't be hard to root the device myself.
I'm hoping to be quickly corrected here.

You don't have to send your phone. You install a few software needed for him to remotely do all the stuff in front of your eyes. And you open the back cover of the phone, link two points with a paper clip or something like that. A lot of people have done it and I haven't seen a single complaint (except for some people who think this is a ripoff and want it free).
The problem is that there are a few versions of "lock", carrier sim-lock, locked bootloader, not being able to use fastboot. But this method unlocks everything in a few minutes.
Jinx13 also does bootloader unlocking for like 15 bucks

I have PMed Alejandrissimo and I am hoping this phones bootloader can be unlocked. I have AT&T Xperia Play(R800At) and the bloatware is killing me(and lack of freedom). Phone is brand new & it will be a shame to have to return for Atrix. I will pay the money as long as future updates dont re-lock bootloader, sim, & take root from me & I dont have to keep paying.

This has been answered before. What's stopping people from hacking this phone is that this phone is relatively new. It had just came out on the market for almost a month and the developers may have not been able to purchase the phone yet.

Just to add to this, the bootloader is almost everything and Sony fixed Gingerbread so that it cannot be exploited using the old fashion means, which means either we develop new means or wait for ICS that we have a new way to exploit.
It may also be that many devs are working on the new more powerful phones, any Sony is really a small underground community. I promise when I get an ion I'll start developing.

Another reason is that everyone is waiting for ICS, why bother to develop for GB when ICS is coming in like 1-2 month.

I called the dev allocation line, they said definitely maybe we may or may not get some dev support.
I hate being the troll here but why, why ask this same question that others have and further bloat this forum, when no one knows when a Rom is coming.

Yes youll lose your drm and waranty forever no chance recovering it
Probably some service centre check it some didn't: D
My friend has an Xperia mini Pro unlocked bootloader but when his phone broke because he overvoltage it too much. He got lucky the guy didn't check the bootloader status so it's still under warranty: p

Just a note about the warranty. Unlocking your bootloader will NOT void your warranty. Yes Sony will know if you unlock and you will lose drm keys. Sony will still honor warranty for bad parts and workmanship. However if it's unlocked they will be more picky about claims. Say your phone unlocked with custom kernel and have overclocked. If you cook the cpu by running to hot, that is your fault and Sony won't cover. But say you get some yellow tint (like XS got) in screen Sony will repair.

I read about it in the forums a while ago and I believe so, but a few weeks after the newer Xperia phones get the update. (I read that from somewhere, but not sure if it is true.
EDIT:
From another user's forum, I guess the Ion might not get it after all. Shame on AT&T. Here is the original forum.

There is an offer for Xperia Z owners that gives them a 25€ voucher for SEN services (this includes PSN, which is what interests me the most). Is there some way to spoof our device to make the app think it's an Xperia Z? I'd really enjoy a free game off PSN.

I figured as much, but with google, I only find edits to spoof as samsung or nexus. Also, what do I need to edit for the spoof to work, exactly?
Can I get a full guide on how to do this, with all the data needed from the Xperia Z?
Ok, I have the Xperia Z build.prop right here (got it from some rom I grabbed on the XZ forum), which lines do I need to change exactly?
Nevermind, I did it.

Yes, it worked. I used it on PSN and I'm currently downloading a game. Hopefully it's not illegal. I don't feel too bad about it because I own a ton of sony devices, so I probably deserve it too even though I don't have the XZ.
I'd like if this thread was deleted ASAP if I somehow broke any rule.
As of today the promotion is on hold due to to many people claiming the £20 vouchers, and seeing as I only just spoofed my sxs I just missed out lol. The message from sony does say it will start again and the promotion runs until halfway through June so hopefully I will get a chance to claim the voucher code.

For anyone not with an Xperia Z, but still have an Android phone you must first be rooted, and download build.prop editor. Back up first, then set the settings to this:
ro.product.device=C6603
ro.product.model=C6603
ro.product.brand=Sony
ro.product.name=C6603_1272-8629
ro.product.board=MSM8960
ro.product.manufacturer=Sony
ro.build.fingerprint=Sony/C6603_1272-8629/C6603:4.1.2/10.1.A.1.350/ofp_rw:user/release-keys
The offer is now working again but Sony have updated the app to block spoofed phones well at least the sxs.
