[Q] CM10 Nightlies and Extremely Slow WIFI Hotspot connections - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a Big supporter of the CM Team and how they were able to give New Life to my old Epic 4G. Great job!
The problem I am having started when I moved from using CM9 to CM10 After doing a Factory Reset "clean" install... I primary use my Epic 4G as a Wifi Hotspot for my Xoom WIFI tablet which is using Team EOS3 Nightly ROMs. Now I never had ANY WiFi (speed) related problems using the CM9 version as long as I had a good signal. When I upgraded to CM10 I was able to enable the WiFi HotSpot but web browsing was extremely slow and had timeout issues to the point where it is completely frustrating and unusable. The issues due not seem to be depended on the phone's signal strength and I have not been able to resolve the problem. Has anyone experienced a similar issue?
Thank you in advance,

I have something similar. It seem to have began after the 11/19 nightly for me. The range of my connection seem to have decreased. Or if it is connected with -70 and below on Wifi Analyzer, it may get not data or very slow speeds, and timeout issues.
I have not seen any kernel changes from bbelos, so maybe it is something else in the CM nightly changes?
I am currently on 11/29 nightly, stock kernel.

I am on the nightly from 12/3, and I can't get the wifi tether to work regardless of what I try (have set it up with open, WPA2, used Auto and Device specific for Epic 4G) - nothing seems to get it to work.
Is there another modem or anything else I should try? I tried to post on the CM10 forum, but as I'm new, I'm not allowed to.

Don't use an app, there is an option in settings>more>Tethering & portable hotspot

I can't even get it to work with the built in option. It acts like there is no internet.

Flashed CM7 RC1: No 4G settings showing?

After a successful (And impressive) installation of CM7 RC1, I noted that I don't have any 4G settings available or anything.
Should I have installed a nightly? (I think I may flash Nightly 12 and see what happens)...
Luckily, I've done a full Nandroid backup (actually, multiples -- I'm paranoid, I guess) in case I need to return to stock.
Ideas? Advice?
Peace.
4G is not in the RC1, it started appearing on nightly 8 I think....
I believe it was 6, but yes, RC1 does not have 4G integrated into it.
So, I installed Nightly 12, and that has 4G.
Now I see settings for 4G but can't connect. I've checked for my RSA keys with the Key Checker app in the Market and they are present, so that's not the issue.
Now, I get the cycling between scanning, connecting, and then disconnecting with 4G.
Some strange quirks with having to reboot to reset network performance (but maybe that's me not knowing how to work with CM7 yet).
Damn if CM7 isn't fast as **** though...
EDIT: Seems that my WiMax MAC address is different than the one my phone had when I was Stock...Could that be it???
Are you using a wimax enable kernel?

I'm using the whatever the kernel CM7 Nightly 12 has, standard. Didn't know I had to flash a different kernel...
And how do I do that, by the way?

No, they kernel provided is just fine. Do you have good 4G in your area? Also, you flash a kernel the same you do a rom. Wipe cache and dalvik, then flash.

With stock, I had one bar. But it was obtainable. I seem to have my "issued" device MAC address back as well...
I'm going to remove the battery, wait about 20 secs and restart. See what that does..
If its only 1 bar, it may just tale a lil longer to find it.
OK, looks like the issue might be resolved. Well, at least a workaround.
Seems that turning off my home WiFi allowed WiMax to connect. Pretty damn happy about that...But sadly, when my device went to sleep, WiMax disconnected.
Initial tests with SpeedTest show my WiMax performance *when connected* appears to have improved dramatically. Like above 10Mbps performance down...
So, now, hoping that 4G can stay connected after sleeping and with WiFi connected in a future release...
Sorry, should have mentioned it, but some have an issue when wifi and wimax are both on, they stopped working. Just need to disable wifi and you'll be set.

Is that a known bug at this moment? what about the loss of 4G on sleep? I don't know how to report bugs...

WiFi tether....

I can't go 10 minutes using wifi tether without my phone doing a soft restart or without the app just not working tried beta8-11 all the same, any help would be greatly appreciated...
*also i haven't been getting any 3g although 4g works fine, when i switch to 3g only it give me the blank signal triangle*
(rooted on stock 4.0.2)
Anybody have any idea why this happens or other alternative beside pda net, would prefer something wireless, or should i just flash a custom rom with tethering hack already in it?
Mine has the same issue.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Not sure which are updated for ICS, but have you tried any of the other WiFi Tethering apps? And the built-in Hotspot feature?
Try flashing a new kernel maybe? Could be something in there that doesn't like your stock kernel settings?
my guess its that the gnext actually have some telephony related bugs while you are on a 4g network..and google is aware of this..probably it will be solved soon with the 4.0.4/5 update
For wired I use the built in tethering in the settings. For wireless I use this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...ail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk&can=2&q=
I've used both for over an hour with no problems. LTE, GummyNex ROM, Franco kernel.

I didn't realize that there was a new Beta out. Thanks for the link! The v3_1-pre110 version would drop my connection on a pretty regular basis.

Authentication problem (wifi) after AOKP + Franco's Kernel

Hi there
I keep on getting the message of "authentication problem" whenever I try to connect to my router.
It all started happening after flashing AOKP + Franco's Kernel.
I today reflashed for the second time both (Over CWF) and the problem persists.
A few hours ago it was all good on stock 4.0.2.
I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus.
Any ideas?
I have no Mac address filtering and I have re-entered the password million times. All other computers and phones are connecting.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Anyone? Please??
I am not sure if I am having the same issue, but my wireless drops out each time I connect to a different access point
my bad, it was a setting in unlock with wifi that was turning wifi off

That used to happen to me with stock rom 4.0.2. Very annoying thing.
I just fixed my issue with Franco's kernel. I flashed one of those kernels that get updated nightly and now it connects to my router. I guess it has nothing to do with the other kernel but yeah, who knows.
You should flash Franco's 4.0.3 and AOKP. The speed improvement is crazy. Before it was so laggy with stock 4.0.2, even stalling sometimes. Now I can almost compare it with the speed of an iPhone 4s that I have here.
AOKP did an insane work. I'm definitely going to donate. And to Franco's too. They should be doing Samsung's work!

Unofficial CM10 and WiFi problems

I've been using the unofficial CM10 nightly ROMs pretty much since they were rolled out. One thing I had noticed was that with this ROM, and only this ROM, my router would recycle the WiFi every 15~30 minutes. Turning wifi off on my phone stopped this from happening.
Any ideas what could be causing this? I love me some jelly beans but can't deal with having to re-sync everything in my house with wifi whenever I want to use it.

One question:
Your other devices (computer for example) still have internet while your dhd is connected to WiFi?

Help with WiFi Disconnect

I need some assistance trying to narrow down what is causing my issue. I posted this in the LiquidSmooth thread but I wanted to post here to get more exposure and perhaps someone more knowledgeable can chime in. I believed this to be a JB kernel issue but I also tried CM9 on my phone and the problem persists.
Yes, for some reason my phone will randomly disconnect from my WiFi connection. the actual WiFi service will remain on; I can see available networks but it will not reconnect to my saved AP unless I toggle WiFi off/on, and even then it will randomly disconnect again. The same thing happens with CM, and ALL CM-based roms. I have tried Faux, Imoseyon, Trinity, stock, and Ktoonsez kernels and none seemed to fix this issue.
Stock TW roms, both ICS and JB, keep my connection just fine. I also used the same CM nightly build on my GS3 and my Galaxy Nexus for testing purposes. The GS3 will lose connection while the GNex does not, so I figured it had something to do with the kernel since those are usually phone-specific.
As for the WiFi signal, I don't have any issues neither at work nor at home with TW-based roms. This only happens on AOSP. Any insight you guys have regarding this issue is appreciated. Thanks!

I ran a logcat but to be honest, I do not know what to make of it. would anyone happen to understand where my issue is?
