[Q] Question about back up and restore between two phones - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Question about backup and restore.
I am having a problem with the charger port on my EVO. It is rooted and running AlterROM Redux v1.0.2. I have a second EVO that my wife used, she upgraded to a Gallaxy S3. If I root her phone can I just use ROM Manager to backup my phone and then restore it to her phone?
Pics show screen shots from both phones.
First 2 are my phone. 2nd 2 are wifes

I dont believe that would work, over data cables from one phone to another, especially using a totally different phone.

Let me clarify.
My phone is a EVO 4g
Her phone (should of said old phone) is the EVO 4g
I would backup to a SD card. Swap card to other phone and then restore.
So both phones are the EVO 4g and I would be backing up and restoring from a SD card.
Was 2 am when wrote original post. Didn't proof read very well.

I've heard some people say it would work, and I've heard some people say it wouldn't work. You could always root and make a backup of the stock ROM, and then give it a try. That way you have a backup to restore if it fails. But the decision to try is ultimately up to you.

Just got a E4GT

Hey everyone,
I just moved over from a Photon 4G, and before that an EVO 3D, to the Epic 4G Touch! So far I'm digging this phone big time! The previous owner had the wifi borked with a custom kernel, but I got it flashed to something else real quick and everything is a go! Coming from those other 2 phones, this thing is a massive leap forward, but I'm sure you all already know that!! I am just excited to be a part of this forum officially now (been lurking for a while).
I have yet to experience any LOS that I've heard about, which is good. I flashed Calkulin's 2.7 and the EL26 modem and both seem to be running good so far.
I have a random quick question for anyone that wants to answer. Nothing big. Coming from the EVO 3D, which had no "internal storage" per se, everything was downloaded to the SD card for the most part. Now with the E4GT, I have moved over my SD Card with all my backups and whatnot, but most apps seem to want to look in the internal memory portion of the phone. So my question is this:
If you were like me and carried over the SD Card, how did you make the transition as painless as possible? Did you move over your SD Card contents to the internal storage and clear the SD Card? That seems like a pretty easy solution, but still, having an internal storage and additional sd card for more storage seems great on paper, but a little convoluted when put into practice in my opinion. Again, I'm not complaining, just curious how you guys handled it.
Thanks everyone, I look forward to using this phone and talking with you all.
quick question -- what does the el26 modem do?
I just got this phone as well and agree, it's great so far. the best Android phone I've used, and I've owned the Photon, Evo 3D, Evo, etc. my only problem is the charging glitch...
@Dioscorus,
In my case, my u/l, d/l speeds increased quit a bit. Run a speed test with your current modem then try EL26 and run another test. Hopefully you'll see an improvement.

transfer b/u to different evo?

pardon my fng-ness. it's been awhile since i've thought about any of this stuff, and i only read and learned enough the first time a few months back to be dangerous. and, well, annoying, i'm sure.
so, i've got 2 evo 4g's, one rooted, one stock. the one that's rooted now has a usb charge port issue - it will not charge because the port slides too far into the phone. neither phone had been updated to the latest sprint my question is, if i do a back up via nandroid or titanium, can i save that file on the pc, move it to the stock evo, flash it and have the unrooted evo now magically be a mirror image (including root status) of the one i need to take in for service?
as i write this i am now starting to realize probably not, but it's worth asking.
thanks.
n/m. if i can't charge the damn phone, i certainly can't transfer files from it. grrr....
I don't recommend using a nandroid on a different phone. You can restore your apps from titanium backup, just not system apps. There's too many differences between phones.
"We're coming from a pure power source."
A minor note.. If once evo charges, why not charge both batteries with that one to get your other up and running...
And try to get my root backup or titanium to backup the files for you.
i've actually got the two evo's and an Anker charger/backup battery, so i've always got a fresh battery. but...i'm in sales and always on the phone (or surfing between calls, thanks ADD!), so i'm always needing to swap batteries. i could keep going on like that, but prefer to have everything working properly.
I have two EVOS my wife and I, I should say and yes I have very readily swapped nandroids back and forth like nothing. Even when both systems were running diffrent OTAs but both phones were rooted. My advice is root the other phone load the broken phone nandriod on to the good phone SD card and run recovery on the good phone. Also... Back up the existing nandriod on your computer (just in case)

Any way to get back to stock without USB port/odin?

My phone's USB port is borked...as in not working....I'm running BluKuban with CWM installed. Are there any update.zip files that will get me back to full stock so I can take the phone into the sprint store? I can't use Odin as nothing I plug into the USB port works. But I can use WiFi and Airdroid to get a file over to the phone if I can keep it connected long enough. (I'm using a third party charger with some spare batteries to keep running for now.)
Any help is appreciated.
There is a tutorial somewhere I had to do this as well, mobile odin (paid) and the one click .tar will install. You can start a dropbox and upload your file to there then export to you SD or use Kies...Just an idea, but it works I had to go stock before taking my phone to Sprint for a swap.

Get the .tar's and use mobile odin
BTW wrong forum!
Flash the stock modem of the rom you'll install using cwm then flash the stock .tar with mobile odin. That should do the trick.
Can also flash a stock rom from cwm iirc, dont think there's a stock unrooted zip rom around tho.

Mobiletechvideos.com can replace the port with a Samsung exact replacement. If it were me and I could afford it, I'd have them replace the power button switch. Yours may work but if it fails in the future, it would save you from sending it in. If sprint tries to make you pay the 100 deductable for a refurb, it's cheaper to go and have that website replace it. Granted you'll be without a phone, hopefully you have a backup of some sort, for a week or so while they're repairing it. It might be easier to get a refurb, but if you get the port and switch replaced on your phone, at least you won't potentially be getting a refurb that isn't 100% fixed from whatever its original problem was.
---------- Post added at 12:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:52 AM ----------
Oh, and be more careful when your phone is plugged in after you get it fixed.
Samsung repair is always an option. You would not have to pay like you would with mobiletechvideos.
If you have an old Sprint phone to use for a week or two I suggest that route. You do have a 1 year warranty.

My local sprint store just did a swap for free (I take it your usb port is non functional), any hardware issues that degrade the use of the phone is covered under manufactures warranty and you should not have to pay for this through Asurion (w.e. it is called). Also I had my phone since launch with an available upgrade, they kept trying to coax me into upgrading and I told them the phones were identical in features (S3 and S2) the lady about had a heart attack trying to explain the differences, I insisted that "it is my upgrade to use at my disposal" and "this phone has all of my needs covered at the moment" after confirming that the USB port failing was a "Known issue", she gladly gave me a new device.
Kind of a pointless post, but so was this entire thread as this has been covered before....every aspect of it the OP, my post, and in regards to it being in the wrong spot...Anyway good luck..
Forgot what I was gonna say that made any sense at all..
Wow question got answered with no flaming. :good:
Very proud to see this. Got a report on it and no flaming.
OP, please post questions in the Q&A section. Development section is strictly for developing purposes.

[Q] Upgrade Vibrant to SGS3

I'm very close to doing this, but would like to know how to transfer my apps from Vib to S3.
Vibrant ROM is Bionix V Fishman mod4 with Bali 1.8.8. I have Titanium pro; is that the best way?
Tried searching for this using "Upgrade Vibrant to SGS3", "Transfer Vibrant to SGS3", "Move Vibrant to SGS3", "Update Vibrant to SGS3".
No relavant results are returned. Maybe my verbiage is not correct.
Any suggestions? Thank you.
I came from a Vibrant too, so here is my story.
I backed up all my apps with Titanium and copied everything off my Vibe's Internal to my PC. Then I got the SGS3 and plugged it in to my PC to let the drivers install. I then copied everything that I felt was neccessary (I did some house cleaning of things I didn't really need anymore) over to my SGS3 Internal. Then I disconnected and mounted my External. From there all I did was sign into the Market, downloaded Titanium (obviously after I rooted) and restored my User Apps and Data. Took all of 20 minutes.
Thanks Woodrube; I recognize you from the multitude of helpful posts in the Vib section.
I had a notion this is the process but wanted to hear from someone who already had this experience.
You can also just back up everything with titanium but to the sd card, then when you get the S3 just put the sd card in and restore after you root

Thank you. Initally I was thinking along these lines. Have YOU actually done this?
As you can see from my current ROM, I haven't flashed for quite some time so I'm a bit rusty. Looking for advice from the more experienced folk.
Both you and Woodrube offered suggestions that to me seem spot on to what I thought was the correct process.
Love the support from this community.

I have moved from my optimus v, to the motorla triumph, to the s2, and now to the s3. From each one i would backup with titanium to the sd, and after getting a new phone and rooting it, Iwould just restore my apps+data. There's no way in hell I was starting over in all my games lol

[Q] Idiot nephew breaks my Note 2..

I made the stupid mistake to telling my teenage nephew that I'd like to root my Note 2 at some point, and first opportunity he got, he took it and did something to it. I have no idea exactly what he did but all of a sudden I have a Note that has a totally different IMEI number from my phone.
It wasn't rooted but all my apps were gone and the phone was back to factory settings. I've flashed the Note with stock, rooted it, unrooted, flashed again but nothing I do is making the original IMEI appear or changing the IMEI that's in there.
Can anyone please suggest anything please, before I kill the bloody kid - right now, I'm using a 400 year old Nokia and it's killing me...
Sorry but it's your fault. You shouldn't have given your note 2 to him.
Same thing is happening to me everyday.
All my friends, colleagues have been bringing their phones to fix (for free).
It's really annoying, because always something goes wrong.
If I refuse to fix, suddenly I become a "bad guy". But if somethings goes wrong and if they lose their phones, I become a "bad guy" again
I always tell them that "Look! This process can go wrong, you may loose your phone as well. I don't take any responsibility!"
So, you shouldn't have given it to your nephew in the first place.
Sorry if I sound mean, but this attitude of people really annoys me.
For your issue. Have you done an EFS backup before (please say you did)

Wow. Thanks for the helpful reply!
FYI, I never gave it to my nephew. He just took it when I went out and accidentally left my phone behind. No doubt he thought he was just trying to help!
Perhaps you ought to dial back the hostility a touch?
I thought you gave it to him. Now I see what happened.
Do you have EFS backup or not?
LOL, no I never gave it to him.
I didn't do any kind of backup because I wasn't really thinking of rooting etc for a while - I only just got the phone!

Well, I haven't seen something on this forum that you can rewrite IMEI with it by yourself.
But I know some repair centers can do it (not samsung repair centers because it's illegal)
Find one and rewrite your own IMEI
After that make a backup of EFS.

Ask the developer whether it will work on note 2

It only works on the sgs2 apparently

Yeah I saw that. I might work for note 2 too. But it seems that it requires a backup too
Find a phone repairer that have boxes like asansam box, nsbox, spt box etc. They can fix it easily.

Thanks. I'm not sure what those things are but I'll search google and see what comes up!
You don't need to know them. These are multipurpose service boxes/adapters.
Just find an experienced phone repair center that knows what they are doing.
Ok thx. I really appreciate this - I'm well out my depth here!
