pardon my fng-ness. it's been awhile since i've thought about any of this stuff, and i only read and learned enough the first time a few months back to be dangerous. and, well, annoying, i'm sure.
so, i've got 2 evo 4g's, one rooted, one stock. the one that's rooted now has a usb charge port issue - it will not charge because the port slides too far into the phone. neither phone had been updated to the latest sprint my question is, if i do a back up via nandroid or titanium, can i save that file on the pc, move it to the stock evo, flash it and have the unrooted evo now magically be a mirror image (including root status) of the one i need to take in for service?
as i write this i am now starting to realize probably not, but it's worth asking.
thanks.
n/m. if i can't charge the damn phone, i certainly can't transfer files from it. grrr....
I don't recommend using a nandroid on a different phone. You can restore your apps from titanium backup, just not system apps. There's too many differences between phones.
"We're coming from a pure power source."
A minor note.. If once evo charges, why not charge both batteries with that one to get your other up and running...
And try to get my root backup or titanium to backup the files for you.
i've actually got the two evo's and an Anker charger/backup battery, so i've always got a fresh battery. but...i'm in sales and always on the phone (or surfing between calls, thanks ADD!), so i'm always needing to swap batteries. i could keep going on like that, but prefer to have everything working properly.
I have two EVOS my wife and I, I should say and yes I have very readily swapped nandroids back and forth like nothing. Even when both systems were running diffrent OTAs but both phones were rooted. My advice is root the other phone load the broken phone nandriod on to the good phone SD card and run recovery on the good phone. Also... Back up the existing nandriod on your computer (just in case)

I've searched for answers to these questions and I'm sure they exist but with how busy this forum is, it's tough to find answers. Sorry if these have been asked and answered. AT&T at my house has become nearly unusable at times so I'm considering trying Sprint. Having a Captivate and an unusable GPS (and no interest in a physical keyboard) I'm leaning towards the EVO.
1. How easy is it to brick or break the EVO? I'm pretty careful but the Captivate is nearly unbrickable. Just wondering how much more careful I need to be.
2. Is it easy (possible?) to fully restore the EVO back to stock everything, unrooted, if I decide to return it or have to do a warranty exchange?
3. I know it's a long shot but any former Captivate owners (or perhaps Epic owners) that can offer a comparison of battery life?
4. How long does it take to fully charge from 10% battery remaining? I know that sounds like a silly question but one thing I (and others have noticed) regarding the Galaxy S phones is they take a really long time to charge. The battery life isn't great, so I feel like I'm always trying to plug my phone in because it's slow to charge but fast to drain.
5. Not EVO specific, but as many of you may have switched from a previous Android phone to an EVO, does Titanium Backup move from one device to another? In other words, if I move my titaniumbackup folder from my Captivate running Froyo to an EVO running a custom ROM (say, Fresh), would it restore apps and data (NOT system data necessarily) correctly? Captivate is my first Android phone so I've never tried...

Pretty difficult. 99 times out of 100 if you screw something up, there is a way to fix it.
2. Is it easy (possible?) to fully restore the EVO back to stock everything, unrooted, if I decide to return it or have to do a warranty exchange?
Absolutely. It's really easy to do too. Search the development forum, there is a thread there that details how to do it.
3. I know it's a long shot but any former Captivate owners (or perhaps Epic owners) that can offer a comparison of battery life?
I do not have a way to compare, but I put a fresh battery in my EVO yesterday morning, used it moderately throughout the day and still have 40% battery life.

Not sure. I don't ever plug it in to charge, I use a spare battery charger. I have 5 batteries so when one dies, I put a fresh one in.

I'd imagine it would work fine. i used Titanium to restore a ****load of my own apps (free ones, of course) onto my buddy's phone and it worked fine. I would stay away from trying to restore the system data though.

It isn't easy to brick the Evo, but it isn't as brick proof as the captivate.

Much easier than the Captivate, in my opinion (odin sucks). I had to unroot my wife's Captivate recently because she was having the random shut down issue. After dinking around with Odin for way to long I finally ended up nandroid restoring her original stock jf6, through clockwork, that I made immediately after rooting, and then using one click unroot.

My Evo seems to get slightly better battery life (Running Fresh 3.3.0.1) than my wife's Captivate does with rooted JF6. That said, I have had my Evo for 3 months and have learned how to set it up to get best battery life, whereas with my wife's Cappy, I only dink with it when she is having a problem. I suspect that if I worked with her phone a bit the battery life could be a bit better than the Evo.

We both charge our phones at night, so I can't say which takes longer, but my Evo takes about 1-2 hours to get full charge from less than 10% left.

I don't know, I have copied some apps between our phones, but always installed them manually. My guess is TB might work for some apps and not for others. I personally wouldn't do it that way.
I am about to go to verizon and get my incredible replaced under a manufacturing defect. I just read on HTC's site that their warranty covers for 12 months... quiet generous.
the power button is stuck "on" all the time.. for example if I battery pull and put it back in it starts powering up without ever pushing the power button. I heard this was a common issue with the older incredibles.
GOOD thing I was rooted cause for now... optical track wake is a lifer saver. If it wasn't for that feature I would have to battery pull or wait for a phone call every time I wanted to use my phone.
Anyways... is it a good idea to use my backup ROMs on my old incredible on my new incredible? Or should I just play it safe and start from scratch?

If there's a chance that your okld phone is going to be refurbed and sent out as a CLNR, then I'd advise against it. Along with your apps and data, you'll also be cloning the android_ID from the old device onto the new one. Best practice would be to simply restore apps using Titanium.

Apps and services that utilize the android_ID as an identifier are going to push/pull data from any and all handsets bearing that identifier... something to bear in mind when restoring nandroids across devices.

From "Nand backup on different phone?"
No is the short answer, device id is different.

sweet. thanks for the quick reply.
I did this back in my D1 days when the audio went out and I swapped it for a replacement, was it a good idea? probly not. Did I care? nope.
First, let me apologize for asking stupid questions.
We'll be getting our Dinc2 replacement tomorrow, coming from Fascinate. Any tips or suggestion as to where and how to check if our phones are rootable? I know IF the phone is preloaded with GB 2.3 then I'm screwed, so do you power up the phone first and check for the version in 'About Phone' like on Fascinate? If it's loaded with GB, how do you guys backup your apps+data and which app do you use? from what I understand Ti Backup required root.
What the heck is s-on and s-off I saw people talking about? is it some kind of on/off software switch to enable or disable certain function?
No offense, but there are threads about this all over.
That said, you will need to activate your phone and then go into about phone to check the version, although there may be a way to determine that through adb without activating. Just be sure you switch airplane mode on asap after activation or the phone will attempt to upgrade you to gb on its own.

Yea check under about phone. If you are on 2.3.3, there is no software method to root yet. I think the app mybackup pro can work on unrooted phones, but I haven't tried it so I am not sure. Tibu does require root. S-off means you have access to the nandroid section of the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838909

thank you, I read some stuff about using the XTC chip from china to root the GB, I think I'll just wait for the devs if mine came preloaded with GB.
I would get two replacement phones tomorrow, since both of them are of separate orders, it's possible that one may come in Froyo and the other in GB, my wife don't care about custom ROM and other stuff, she just need a phone that work and not having missed calls like the Fascinate did. It would be nice if mine can be rooted because I want to remove all the verizon trashwares and run Ti backup (bought the pro version).
Verizon tech told me they would only ship me the phone, battery, and back cover. He said my Fascinate charger is compatible with the Dinc2 so they won't ship me new charger...are the charger interchangeable for real? if the samsung charger fried the Dinc2 I guess it's going to be on them then. LOL
My fascinate charger works fine with my dinc2.

It's usually better to use the oem charger with your device. I would get an Inc2 charger.

If you use the xtc clip you may not be able to go back to s-on. I would wait for a software method to root. Mine is stock atm and it runs pretty good.

They are interchangeable because most smartphones utilize micro-usb connection. I agree with stevl. Get one for the inc2.. also because it can be connected to your computer or the actual charger which is really nice.
Yea we bought two extra samsung chargers and two car chargers when we first got the Fascinate, on top of the OEM that came with the fascinate. It would cost me to buy a bunch of new one for the Dinc2 again, glad they are compatible. I use the Go Launcher EX and Go themes on my fascinate, I don't suppose it would work with the Dinc2 because of the HTC sense yea?
I keep reading about the signal being weak on Dinc2, especially in the city, is it that much worst than Fascinate? is battery life better or worst now with the Dinc2?
I get about 1.5 mbps down for data speed. Way better than my fascinate. I get about 20hrs battery. You can use go launcher ex instead of sense. It runs pretty good on Inc2.

Received my Dinc2, they also sent me the extended battery with the back cover. The bad news is...it came preloaded with GB 2.3.3 I tried Mybackup Pro and it failed to transfer Angrybird or any other apps progress, Ti Backup Pro is a no go since it requires Root. The speaker phone is definitely not as good as the Fascinate, call volume is weaker, but other than that I do like the Dinc2, the screen is as great and reception is about on par with the fascinate, Wifi speed is slight slower, but overall the Dinc2 feels much snappier, I'm glad I switched over to Dinc2 despite the fact that I can't root the GB yet, don't want to buy no XTC clip so I'll
Android Market updates never failed, it pulled all new updates ran successfully in the first attempt. Both of my Fascinates often needed to rerun several times for the update to download or install.
I bought the Otterbox Defender cases for our new Dinc2, I'll stop by my local Verizon store to see if they would let me exchange the extended battery to the standard one.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
My trusty Evo's USB port ripped off the PCB. It was a sad day. I did anything and everything with that phone. Amazing. So, I decided to buy a used Evo on eBay with a busted LCD but clean ESN. It came, looked as described, but it was remanufactured, I swapped in the front of my old phone (LCD, digitizer, front housing) onto the "new" one, booted it up, and all was well. For about 5 minutes. That's when I experience the first random FC. It kept happening, so I rooted it (Hboot 2.18 with this method), flashed some ROM (I have flashed so many now, I don't remember) and same thing.
Things I have learned:
This thing hates Mason kernels
I can't get tommytomatoe's "The Classic" ROM to even do a full boot.
ICS and CM7-based ROMs seem the best, but I still get random reboots, freezes, and FCs.
Things I have tried:
Reset Permissions - Things seem better after I do this, but after a few hours I get the same thing
Wiped everything, including the SD
I wipe everything but the SD, including the caches x3, before every ROM flash
I am currently running sharkboy0901's MokeeSharK, which is the most stable, but still get the same behavior
Does anyone have any ideas what to do from here, or do I just scrap this phone? I need to hold off for a few months to upgrade and am very sad that I have a bad Evo after having such a good one.

I'm new here so im not sure where to find things on here, except use the search, but anyway i know from experience, that if you partition your sd card, you might be able to resolve this issue your having mate, also try apps2sd method.Like i said sorry for not helping with links yet, until i get used to the forums,i know where nothing is,haha.
Thanks! I did partition the SD and upgraded to Ext4, to no avail. I guess I am stuck with a bad phone.

I think you now know why the last owner sold it.
Best bet, do a full RUU for that phone, and start from scratch
Haha. True. You get what you pay for, and I am not naive enough to think there aren't risks in buying off eBay. I'll try the RUU and let you know. Thanks Hipkat.
The note 4 will be my first phone that I order before it's even out. So this is my first time I'll have to not root my phone.. obviously once I'm rooted I can use titanium back up, but if there's not a root method right away, what should I back up my data on? I've tried the built in back up, but it never backs up my data for my apps. So is there a titanium like back up for non rooted users?
Ummm, there will probably be root the night it comes out, or at the most a couple days. What I've always done on launch day phones is play around with the OS as is. Than when root came, put everything how I actually want it to be. But this will be my first Samsung phone of any kind, so I might just play around with TW for a few weeks and than make my mind up. Just my take on it.
