Hey everyone,
I just moved over from a Photon 4G, and before that an EVO 3D, to the Epic 4G Touch! So far I'm digging this phone big time! The previous owner had the wifi borked with a custom kernel, but I got it flashed to something else real quick and everything is a go! Coming from those other 2 phones, this thing is a massive leap forward, but I'm sure you all already know that!! I am just excited to be a part of this forum officially now (been lurking for a while).
I have yet to experience any LOS that I've heard about, which is good. I flashed Calkulin's 2.7 and the EL26 modem and both seem to be running good so far.
I have a random quick question for anyone that wants to answer. Nothing big. Coming from the EVO 3D, which had no "internal storage" per se, everything was downloaded to the SD card for the most part. Now with the E4GT, I have moved over my SD Card with all my backups and whatnot, but most apps seem to want to look in the internal memory portion of the phone. So my question is this:
If you were like me and carried over the SD Card, how did you make the transition as painless as possible? Did you move over your SD Card contents to the internal storage and clear the SD Card? That seems like a pretty easy solution, but still, having an internal storage and additional sd card for more storage seems great on paper, but a little convoluted when put into practice in my opinion. Again, I'm not complaining, just curious how you guys handled it.
Thanks everyone, I look forward to using this phone and talking with you all.
quick question -- what does the el26 modem do?
I just got this phone as well and agree, it's great so far. the best Android phone I've used, and I've owned the Photon, Evo 3D, Evo, etc. my only problem is the charging glitch...
@Dioscorus,
In my case, my u/l, d/l speeds increased quit a bit. Run a speed test with your current modem then try EL26 and run another test. Hopefully you'll see an improvement.

Makes me happy that our phones are getting some love.
Are we the first Galaxy S2 version to get some official ICS usable leaks? I've seen some videos, but they don't seem to be up to par with what have been getting.
Thanks Sprint! Thanks Samsung!
yep, maybe thats why we never got a leak before, cus they didnt want to give us a version with a lot of bugs like many other have...
Seems like they have a long way to go after viewing QBking's video review. At least they are working on a build to push out. I hope the final result is completely different.

I gotta agree. I've been running fb17 since yesterday and it's smooth as can be. I don't have the recovery installed on it cause from what I can see so far, there really isn't much of a need...
I'm honestly surprised that Sprints version is getting this nuch attention. My cousin who has the sgsii on at& t still has the soundpool bug, so some apps randomly close on him. On our device, it's been fixed sice el13.
Our ics leak appears to be the most stable oem build of ics yet for non nexus devices.

I'm running the FB17 as a daily driver without sacrificing anything but recovery. Everything for me works. I even used the GPS to navigate to a new restaurant 2 hours away today. I streamed the Knicks game yesterday on 4g since I was forced to go to someone's wedding(Rude I know but my Linsanity is crazy). They held it at their restaurant which has no WIFI. Stock UI is smooth and doesn't overheat my phone at all. I'm not talking about TW either. USB mass storage works for me with no problems. I don't know why anyone would not be on ICS right now. It's been real good to me with no problem at all.

Hopefully sprint has realized they make money keeping people happy (and on their network), not by withholding updates to sell phones. But the cynical person in me thinks they are just trying to clear inventory before the lte . They obviously can't release a Wimax phone right now and lte isn't ready.

Why the hell would they ignore one of the biggest devices in the Sprint lineup? That's a silly thing to think and you should feel silly.
I'm currently running CM9 Alpha 5 with the new EL30 modem installed and it's basically a brand new phone (2-3 weeks old) but I have noticed a lot of the time the screen freaks out to where you have to turn it on and off for it to work. I'm not sure what it is, but it opens apps, enters letters in texts and repeats. Has anyone else had this issue? If so how did you fix it??
If I understand your question correctly it sounds like your phone is very unstable either that or you don't know how to operate your phone properly. I'm not quite sure which one it is. Please when you come on to these forums please think carefully before you ask a question. Some of us members are here to help you but if you ask a question that is very hard to understand you will not get an answer. If your phone is acting very unstable here are a few things you can do. First go back into Clockwork mod and make a nandroid backup if you want to save your data. If you're not concerned about your data then you can just do a full wipe of data cache and dalvik cache. Wipe all three and then reinstall the latest Alpha build of CM9 and the proper gapps. And next time please think about how you are going to ask your questions on here some of the other members will not even give you the time of day for a post like this.
I'm not phone stupid, not trying to be mean, but anyways its a brand new phone, and I had an old one from Sprint in which the screen cracked. But if that's the only way I will wait until CM9A6 for the phone.
Well when you ask questions on a community forum as such like this. You should word your question in the best way possible so people can provide you the help.

you have to reflash cm9, you may have installed a bad flash. i would redo the whole flash with cm9 and the kernel.

don't do a nandroid backup.. just wipe all data. sometimes when you do a nandroid, it saves the errors as well.

As many as it takes. I would assume when you click every option or setting and don't see some type of "coming soon" message then it can move to a full beta. Too many options have not been incorporated yet and will from upstream updates.
Who knows I don't think 6 has dropped yet. If you go on the CM9 status page you may find more info there. Even in it's alpha stage now it performs very well. Just a few minor tweaks that keep me away for now.

True Crazy, bottom line it is up to the Devs and what they feel is a "Beta" build.

I'm thinking about getting a new phone. Maybe someone can offer me some info to help me choose. I have a htc evo 4g now. I've been thinking bout rooting it. But a new phone might just be better. I really like my htc though so I was thinking bout a evo 3d maybe. Possibly another brand. I'm not much of a fan of motorola or samsung. But they seem to be getting better. I want to have wifi tethering so I know i'll have to root if I stay with htc. I really like the sense 3.0 my gf has on her evo 3d. The other thing is the ram for storing apps. I only have 512 with my evo and even less is usable. My toshiba thrive has 3gb, I've heard app space is all in the software. Is there a possibility to get a rom that runs sense 3.0 with ics? Would this give me more room to store more apps as well? Thanks.
Edit: My sprint contract is almost up. I think the beginning of july. I don't know if I'm going to stay. Might take whatever phone I get to boost or something.

I would definitely NOT recommended upgrading to an Evo 3D. Wait for the Evo 4G LTE if you want to stick with the Evo line. There are other, better phones out there than the 3D, even from other manufacturers.
As for rooting your current Evo 4G, there are Sense 3.0 roms available. I don't believe there are any ICS + Sense 3.0 roms, but I don't keep up with Sense at all. If you need more app storage, you can always partition your SD card and use the SD-Ext partition to store apps & data. You do, of course, need to be rooted to take advantage of an ext partition. Without partitioning, the Sense 3.0 roms will actually leave you with less storage space. AOSP roms will generally give you more space. With a decent sized SD card, you won't have to worry about space for apps.
Since my suggestion is to wait for the LTEvo, I'd go ahead and root the 4G. From there you can use the wireless tether, and/or flash any rom you want. Just be sure to read, read, and then read some more. Understand what you're doing before you do it. With the latest hboot (2.18), you have to use the HTCdev method to unlock the bootloader. You'll still be s-on, and you'll have to flash via fastboot. I'd suggest going ahead with Captain Throwback's method to downgrade and get s-off. From there, your options are limitless.
The fine folks here at xda will be happy to help you out along the way,, just be sure to do your own research. If you get stuck in the process and searching hasn't yielded any answers, then post questions (or send me a pm, I'm happy to help),
Good luck! Hopefully you don't jump the gun and get an Evo 3D, there are much better phones out now and coming out in the near future. The 3D is barely even an upgrade.
Thanks plainjane. The evo 3d is cheap round here. Usually $125-150. The ram is doubled and a 1.2ghz dual core would be better than what I have. I don't see the htc one being much of a upgrade either. I don't care much bout the speed of the camera and taking pics fast. Plus i'm not sure i wanna sign another 2 year contract. The one thing that really turns me off is the non removable battery. Hopefully it will have really good battery life. I still like to have the option to buy extended batteries if i want. What other phones would you suggest?

I agree with the previous comments about waiting on the new HTC phones to upgrade, I wouldn't waste your upgrade on a 3D.
I think you should definitely explore rooting your current Evo to check out some of the awesome custom Roms that are out there, including Sense 3.0 roms. Rooting and partitioning your SD card (maybe upgrade your card) will give you all the storage space you need. It will bring new life to your phone and help pass the time until your contract is up. Me personally, I'm waiting to see how Sprint rolls out the network upgrades/LTE before I get into another 2 year contract. I have a rooted Evo and it does everything I need, I don't need a new phone that is restricted by slow 3G.
Do you know which Hboot you have? Do some rooting research actually, do a lot of research and ask questions. Its not as hard as it seems.
And remember to back up your SD card and Nandroid if do decide to root.
Good luck

Thanks. I def wouldn't waste my upgrade on a 3d. I was just going to sell my evo and buy a 3d on craigslist. Might even be able to break even. I rooted my vizio vtab so I'm kinda familiar. Once you root a evo do you have to flash a rom? When I rooted my tablet it was the same as it was before, just had superuser access. Only did that to free the update service. I've been doing alot of reading. I know I have the newest hboot. From what I've read it will be some fun rooting it. Where can I learn more bout flashing roms and kernels? I've done a good bit of reading but are there any good informative videos?

No, you won't have to flash a rom but, you will probably want to after all the work to unlock it. It took me a week or two to flash after unlocking, and I was on the previous hboot that was a little easier. There should be rooting guides in the development section of the forum and there's also videos on youtube. I used Android Forum a lot at the beginning, they are very user friendly to what may seem like a silly question. Flashing is easy compared to the unlocking aspect, just remember to backup everything, make a Nandroid and wipe everything except sd card prior to flashing.

No, I don't think you'll have to even turn over your phone. When I get a new phone I'm keeping my Evo to continue flashing and using it as a kind of media toy!!!
I'm very close to doing this, but would like to know how to transfer my apps from Vib to S3.
Vibrant ROM is Bionix V Fishman mod4 with Bali 1.8.8. I have Titanium pro; is that the best way?
Tried searching for this using "Upgrade Vibrant to SGS3", "Transfer Vibrant to SGS3", "Move Vibrant to SGS3", "Update Vibrant to SGS3".
No relavant results are returned. Maybe my verbiage is not correct.
Any suggestions? Thank you.
I came from a Vibrant too, so here is my story.
I backed up all my apps with Titanium and copied everything off my Vibe's Internal to my PC. Then I got the SGS3 and plugged it in to my PC to let the drivers install. I then copied everything that I felt was neccessary (I did some house cleaning of things I didn't really need anymore) over to my SGS3 Internal. Then I disconnected and mounted my External. From there all I did was sign into the Market, downloaded Titanium (obviously after I rooted) and restored my User Apps and Data. Took all of 20 minutes.
Thanks Woodrube; I recognize you from the multitude of helpful posts in the Vib section.
I had a notion this is the process but wanted to hear from someone who already had this experience.
You can also just back up everything with titanium but to the sd card, then when you get the S3 just put the sd card in and restore after you root

Question about backup and restore.
I am having a problem with the charger port on my EVO. It is rooted and running AlterROM Redux v1.0.2. I have a second EVO that my wife used, she upgraded to a Gallaxy S3. If I root her phone can I just use ROM Manager to backup my phone and then restore it to her phone?
Pics show screen shots from both phones.
First 2 are my phone. 2nd 2 are wifes
I dont believe that would work, over data cables from one phone to another, especially using a totally different phone.

Let me clarify.
My phone is a EVO 4g
Her phone (should of said old phone) is the EVO 4g
I would backup to a SD card. Swap card to other phone and then restore.
So both phones are the EVO 4g and I would be backing up and restoring from a SD card.
Was 2 am when wrote original post. Didn't proof read very well.
I've heard some people say it would work, and I've heard some people say it wouldn't work. You could always root and make a backup of the stock ROM, and then give it a try. That way you have a backup to restore if it fails. But the decision to try is ultimately up to you.
