[Q] Galaxy Nexus 4.2.1 Can't see all files when via USB (MTP) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a galaxy nexus running 4.2.1. I have been having this issue since the update to 4.2. I am not able to see all files when I have my device connected to a pc via USB. When I navigate to the folder on my PC it can be empty or missing the file I am looking to transfer to my PC. I am not sure if this is a 4.2 issue, but I have not have this issue in previous versions. I am able to transfer files via my websharing app, but these files are movies and are over 1 gb in size on average so I would like to get this working. Let me know what you guys think.

Oh I have this same issue on 4.1.1. This is very frustrating. Sometimes, some files even fail to copy to PC.
Overall, the file listing and copy operations from Galaxy Nexus to PC is very unreliable. The file copy was rock solid and even faster on my HTC Desire.
However, I can see all files and copy them successfully using an app called Airdroid, over Wifi.

This issue should not happen anymore after ICS, but try deleting the .nomedia file in your folders, this file tell the phone to not scan in that folder. Reboot, then wait for the media server to rescan, then plug it in.
If that don't work, clear your Media Storage's data (Settings -> Manage apps -> All -> Media Storage), then delete the folder "/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.providers.media", reboot and let it rescan for 10mins.

That did it! Thanks for the info!!!

I am actually still having this issue on my galaxy nexus running 4.2.1. I am running a stock OS and not rooted. I am not sure what else I can do. After further testing I have come to find that I am not able to access any newly created file on my device when connected by a USB cable to a computer until I restart my device. I even went to the trouble of doing a factory data reset. I am able to access new files from my device or wireless via the websharing app, just not via USB to my computer running windows 7 32bit. I am not sure if an app I have installed could be causing this issue. All I know is I never had this issue with ICS. Let me know what you guys think. I am at a total loss with this.

Had same issue not sure of fix but found if i rebooted computer and device when i plug device in again it sees the new files, its like the computer only sees whatever files are in phone at the point of first viewing phone sd folders, so any changes after that arent registered until computer is rebooted.
I think rebooting gnex also helps embed any changes to files and folders.
Its a hassle but it works

Just in the even that someone needs help with this issue. I ended up installing an app called "Rescan Media". All you have to do it tap the icon for this app, you will see a flicker on your phone and your computer will be good to see your new files.

"Rescan Media" app let me see ALL my files in windoZe 7

Galaxy Nexus Mounting to Mac/Windows issues

So i am trying to mount my Nexus mass storage drive to my mac and windows computers and my phone will not connect to the phone. It will sometimes open up the file manager app and show me files on the computer, but the files it shows are wrongly named, previous deleted and wont let me copy anything to the drive or delete .
But when i use a file explorer on the phone, i see the right files and no mess ups.
anyone have any ideas on how to fix it so my computer reads my phone properly?
ive tried restarting all devices, used different cables and Wiped formatted and installed new roms
only thing i have not tired is format "sdcard" on the phone.
anyone know how to do this?
it was working for a little bit, but i do not know what i did to fix it. anyone got any ideas?
i am also using a LTE U.S. version of the nexus if that helps.
Im rooted running the newest AOKP Build 28
and running imoseyon_leanKernel_v2.7.2gnexus
The Nexus does not have a mass storage mode. It uses MTP. The easiest way to transfer files using a Mac is to use wifi file explorer. I had a hell of a time getting it working on my Mac using USB, so I ended up just doing it over wifi with wifi file explorer.

I have been having this problem forever.
Went into my kernal app and turned it off. Works instantly.
Make sure you have MTP selected under storage.

Files not Updated at MTP

When connect my A100 to a PC via MTP, found some of the files deleted/moved not accurately shown inside the file manager of PC. The files, which had been deleted/moved via apps of tablet earlier, are still shown in the original location but are unable to be opened.
The database/index of the MTP program seems corrupted, is it possible deleted the MTP data and force a rescan?
Pls help, thanks.

Found a solution from other forum:
1) clear data of the "Media Storage" app
2) rescan the files via the "SDrescan" app (which can be downloaded from Play Store)

I had started a thread on this issue back in december, still having issues on Jelly bean on my xoom (I know it's a different device, but same issue).
On Honeycomb, I had problems, sometimes files would not be updated even after reboot. Now I'm on JB, having the same issue, so it seems to be a MTP issue that's independent of android version.
I have tried SDrescan, but it doesn't always work. Did SDrescan fix this issue on the Iconia?
btw, my workaround was to not use MTP, and install a samba share app instead. There are a few samba apps in the market, and you have to have a wifi network, but it's pretty solid compared to MTP.

Yeah, "SDrescan" fixed my problem at A100. Btw, "AirDroid" also a very good solution via Wifi....
Thanks for the information !
I had a Samsung S4 with exact the same trouble. (running 5.0.1 original Samsung ROM)
Did delete Media Storage Data and restarted the phone.
After that the display via MTP was fine... no need for SDrescan.
I did know already about the fact that i can restore pictures, videos and coverart on music with that trick... i was not aware that this also affects the standard file-handling for mtp.

[Q] Can't access my old files after switching ROM from AOKP to CM

Initially I thought this was a problem with Google Play / Apollo, but I realize now that when I plug in my phone via USB, I can't see any of the many, many folders and files present on /sdcard that I could see previously.
If I copy a "new" mp3 onto my Galaxy Nexus, it's recognized just fine by both Google Play and Apollo. However, none of my old mp3s (or files, for that matter) are recognized. They were placed in /sdcard/Music, a folder that I cannot see when I plug in my phone, only from the file manager running on the phone. The issue persists if I move an "old" mp3 from my music folder out into the sdcard root, it's still not recognized. This makes me think this might be permission related, but the file manager says that all files are readable and writable.
I've tried running "fix permissions" in both ROM manager and the CWM recovery, but it makes no difference. Any idea what has happened, and how to fix it so that I can use all my old files again?
edit If it's any help, I just ran ls -al in a terminal emulator and I can't see any difference at all between folders I can and cannot see. Example: I can see /sdcard/media just fine, because I created that folder from Explorer in Windows. Music in that directory works. I cannot see /sdcard/music. Here's the permissions:
Code:
drwxrwxr-x root sdcard_rw 2012-09-18 media
drwxrwxr-x root sdcard_rw 2012-09-16 music
This is a bit confusing.
When I try pulling and pushing a file with adb like so:
Code:
adb pull file.tar
adb push file.tar file2.tar
I get
Code:
failed to copy 'file.tar' to 'file2.tar': Read-only file system
I've tried remounting /sdcard in root terminals both on the phone and via adb, but I get mount: Operation not permitted. I'm thinking this might be because /sdcard isn't the actual path but I've tried /storage/sdcard0 and /mnt/sdcard as well and I get the same error.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
(This question was also posted on android.stackexchange)
adb push /sdcard/file2.tar
also, cm doesnt have root access enabled by default for adb.
/sdcard/ is already rw, otherwise apps couldnt place anything there. nor could we.

Didn't realize I needed an absolute path, thanks! I now managed to push the file, but it does not show up under the "Galaxy Nexus" unit in My Computer. It does show up when I do an ls in adb shell though. Any ideas?

try disabling mtp on the device; or rebooting, if you want to stick with mtp. maybe it has to refresh file list?

Switching from MTP to PTP does nothing, the same files are shown ("new" files). I'd like to stress that if I take a picture for example, that pictures does show up both with MTP and PTP. New files work fine. It's the old files that I can see in the file explorer in the actual phone that just refuse to show up when I connect to my computer, and they are obviously also not recognized by apps in the phone (such as Apollo or Google Play).
I realize that I could work around this issue by just removing everything from my sd card and then putting it back, but I really want to figure out how this can even happen.
I'm no expert by far, but it sounds like when you changed ROM the"index"file for mtp isn't updates. Have you tried to run the media scanner?

If I've understood correctly, power cycling the device should trigger the media scanner. I just tried restarting, and it made no difference. (I've restarted the device several times since this problem occurred).
Opening the Gallery app still only shows me two pictures (I've taken two photos since the ROM flash), interestingly the thumbs are for other pictures lying around and after a while Gallery crashes. I use QuickPic more often though and that app behaves well, and shows all photos.
edit As a final resort, I tried doing a full wipe and reinstalling CM10 M1 completely, without restoring any settings or apps from any old installations. The issue still persists! Any files created with my now "old" CM10 installation no longer appear, even when they are moved within a folder where other "new" files are shown and working. This is starting to annoy me, but since this obviously is a bug in CM10 M1 I see no point in trying to spend time solving it, I'm just going to switch back to AOKP. Thank you for any answers and attempts at solving this.
edit2 Formatting /sdcard in CWM recovery fixed this, even though it might not be the most elegant solution.
Have you seen this?http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30288268
Basically what it suggests is that you go to apps via settings, find the "Media Storage" app (it's a system app) Clear data/cache, then reboot. This was my problem.

So what is the trick if this has been ticked the whole time but still won't show up? I've glot CM 10.2, MTP is checked, when plugged in the laptop it shows up at the bottom on the task bar & then when I right click it says Nexus 7.
My device shows up under devices & printers, but not under computer when clicking the start menu on the PC & clicking computer. My HDD, DVD drive & SD card all show up, but no N7 so I can't transfer files.
Am I missing something else?

Please elaborate a bit. What I understood is :
Nexus 7 doesnot show up like an SD card etc but as a mobile device yet you can not transfer stuff ?
It doesnot show up like a drive. For me, on Windows 7, it shows up like a mobile device in other devices with the name "Nexus 7". If i click it , I get into the internal memory. You can not rename folders or transfer files within Nexus(as it is used by the Nexus itself so it can not be changed). However, try copy a file from PC to your nexus. Does that work? If yes, that is perfectly normal. Use a file explorer like ES file explorer to rename and transfer files within Nexus. But Es file explorer has some bugs with JB 4.3 esp with extracting a rar file.
If this doesnot solve it, I remember there was also some settings for it. I can not remember though as I havenot used the latest CM 10.2.

So the first picture is of devices. You can see the N7 is shown, but clicking it only takes me to the info about the device. No way to transfer stuff. Right clicking gives me eject, troubleshoot, properties.
The second is the windows section where it shows the HDD, etc. No N7. I was expecting it to show up to be able to transfer files from computer to the device as in a mass storage device. I did this with the last one where I could see everything on the device.
I have a 600mb file I want to transfer to the tablet & was expecting to just copy it over.

I am attaching my pictures how I see my nexus when it is connected. You do not see Nexus 7 if it is not connected properly or not enabled from Nexus settings.
Does your device charge when you connect to the PC ?
Does your device connect in USB debugging mode ?
Further, go into device manager in My computers and see if there are any question marks on any device? Make sure your device is connected at that time.
Try to connect it to different port or without USB hub if you are using as sometimes, devices do not show up.
Moreover, try to connect your device to the PC and then tick on MTP and then change few options like connect via different methods and see if any usb connection is seen ?
Also, close all other mobile softwares in the background and taskbar (Kies, Sony PC companion, LG, Nokia PC suit) and then try connecting it.
They are many a times culprits. Even try uninstalling their drivers and programmes.
IF USB DEBBUGGING WORKS AND CHARGING, DRIVERS ARE PERFECTLY INSTALLED IN THE PC
YOUR PROBLEM SEEMS TO ME FROM NEXUS SETTINGS.
IT SIMPLY COULD BE A BUG AS CM is still nightly
I hope this helps

May be a CM bug. I just connected my Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.2 AOKP & I just transferred files from my phone to computer.
The N7 is connected, charging, debugging works, etc. So i'll keep waiting to see what the deal is with each new CM install.
I do appreciate all of the suggestions. Should have tested it on CleanRom before flashing CM to see if it was working then.
I am having the same problem with cleanrom

Why I will NEVER buy another Nexus device again.

The file system is whack!
Why?
Try this very simple test.
Create a new folder and create some files to put in there.
Use a USB cable and plug it into your laptop.
Open your phone.
Where is your new folder and files?
But wait, if you open up ES File Explorer on the phone, everything is there?
Okay, reboot your phone.
Then, plug it into your laptop again.
Okay, now everything is there.
It's like you have to reboot your Nexus device in order to allow your laptop to see a refresh of the storage memory.
This is why removable memory is the way to go.
I just use Filezilla and ftpserver from the play store. Easy and fast. I'll never plug my phone into the computer again to transfer files.
use a good file explorer that does refresh the storage index...try solid explorer..problem solved
every change made by solid explorer to the file system is notified to the android media store index, try to repeat your steps with solid explorer
(that happens to every new phone out there that use MTP over mass storage file transfer, about 90% of new smartphone, even phone with removable storage use MTP today )
Wires are much too cumbersome. I use ES file manager to move files to/from my tablets/PC/dropbox/Box.com. Copy and paste between any and all of those easier than using a full desktop PC. No need to search for a wire. Or even be in the same room as your PC. Problem solved.

But, the nice thing about removable storage is that it's easy to pop out the memory card and put it into your laptop. I only wish that laptop makers would put a micro SD card slot into laptops so I don't have to keep my adapter in there.
Plus, it copies way faster that way, in my experience. Also, Windows Explorer treats it like storage device, instead of some weird "thing" with the MTP method, ie, Teracopy never works with MTP.
i use root explorer and never had that issue. i created folder thru root explorer and i plugged into my laptop and i was able to view folder. but i got to say when i first got my gnex i was scared because of not having a removable sd card. but when i did have my droid X my sd card did fail, but luckily i backed everything up to my laptop before it actually failed.

This is not a Galaxy 'Nexus' problem, it's an Android thing, its MTP.
Any app that can trigger a media scan should cure that without having to reboot.
I've been using filezilla on my pc to push files to my phone for awhile though and it is much more convenient. USB transfer is slow and those cords always break on me >.<
That's no reason to ditch the galaxy nexus though. Maybe the terrible screen, poor placement of headphone jack, and battery life though... Lol

So, I think it's just a problem linked to your Gnex. When I plug mine, I always see it on my pc like a removal memory.. And this should happen if you are rooted or not, it doesn't depend on it.
Inviato dal mio Galaxy Nexus utilizzando Tapatalk
18 months of updates doesn't warrant buying a nexus anymore, I just buy a better hardware non nexus phone an install the latest google stock on it using a custom rom.
Uninstall mtp drivers from drivers management and install it again
Remove all drivers related to gnex and install again
Just download latest USB drivers zip
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
And follow istructions
http://developer.android.com/tools/extras/oem-usb.html#InstallingDriver
Don't know how but I never faced this issue. I use file manager.
