[Q] Best note taking app? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

OK,
Maybe someone has tried an app and can recommend something other than S-Note.
I need a note taking app that can, not only put my quick notes in a widget form, so I can read/edit the note (with the S-pen) without launching the app itself. And be able to schedule the note with an alarm of some sort. Seems simple enough, but I've tried all I can find, and nothing seems to do this simple enough function.
Anyone know of something can do this? Or, is the S-pen still in it's infancy stage?
S-note is ok, but no widget ability and no schedule or timer ability=LAME for me.

you aren't going to find any s pen third party apps until all android devices adopt it... in fact the s suggest spen apps and the stock apps are probably the only apps that consciously use the pen

There are other apps that work great with the S Penn. I use Lecturenotes on a regular basis and it is a great note taking app (that fully supports the pen and button), however I don't think it takes care of all the OP requirements.

Beesy - smart taking notes for iPad
Beesy is the All in one App to manage your business activity and manage your meeting.
Beesy provides a smart note taking app / To-Do application that understands the underlying tasks and suppresses unnecessary operations. It addresses 3 main pain points of business meetings:
- Quickly take notes during meetings and do not miss critical information,
- Send instant meeting minutes right after the meeting in less than a minute,
- Easily follow-up on actions with a powerful To-Do organizer reusing 100% of your notes and your calendar.
You can try it, i think you not be disapointed.
Marco

I've been using Note Everything, and like it.
I don't think it can make a widget from a note. I share notes into GTD DGT to track tasks, though. It also has some built-in tricks of its own that I haven't fully explored.
Re: supporting the s-pen, I believe that as long as the app can use the system-supplied keyboard with handwriting recognition it will support the s-pen, the app doesn't need a special capability to do this.
[ edit ]
It turns out Note Everything can make a widget from a note, who knew? I'm not a fan of the widget's appearance, though.

What do you use since there is no default note taking / voice rec apps

I never understood why google don't add a note taking / voice recording app to the AOSP, so wanted to see what you guys use that fills this gap?
I currently have flicknote for notes (syncs to my simplenote, which is great), don't have anything for audio recording at the moment.
I use Catch. It's backed up online, so if I'm flashing between ROMs I don't have to keep track of backing it up.
Evernote.

This. I use Evernote for all my note taking.
Ditto for Evernote, as far as note-taking goes. I've never needed to record audio notes, so can't comment there.
I use ColorNote, free app.
If you download LauncherPro, and open up the activities widget in the normal launcher, then scroll down to sound recorder option and select it, you will then have access to the hidden sound recorder app on the home screen, similar to how you access the Rocket Launcher.
Note Everything or Springpad, depending...

I've tried Evernote, but I find it absolutely enraging that you can't see your notes if you're offline. This is a huge problem, IMHO.
I've been using NoteEverything Pro for a while, which I really like.
Color note for me, nice and simple note taking with optional auto backup to online. Dont use any audio notes myself so not got a suggestion for that.

Anyone hear about this app? I read on another forum it works with Nexus7 now. What are your thoughts?
It hasn't been released yet. It looks good i would def but it ones is out.
I'm thinking about preordering it. It looks too boss!
If the pre-order would give me an apk after my payment I'm in.
Preorder gives out early access to the app, which is n august. It will officially launch at play store n sept
Thanks guys...yeah looks like I'll think about it when it does come out. Got too many other things to worry about when my Nexus 7 arrives tomorrow!
I'm definitely going to be looking at this when it comes out. I'm looking to use my $25 play store money on tablet apps and might have to save some for when this gets released

Before you ask yes I have used it I have been trying it for two days now. Chameleon is not worth your time or money and despite the intention of the creators is NOTE deeply customizable. What it is is a series of widgets on a a couple of nice looking backgrounds. That's it in it's entirety. You have very little control over where you place the widgets (there is a strict grid pattern to use) or how much you can resize them (according to this grid pattern) and when you resize them smaller these widget they lose a lot of info (ie what they display). Only widgets desgined by Chameleon can be used and right now there are only 5 (twitter, gmail, facebook, instagram, and news...with very limited sources), so forget about using any widgets from your favorite apps unless chameleon deigns to create one in the future. These widgets also have limited functionality and you have no control over that limited functionality. Say you want to manually set your location on a weather app, or set your facebook app to update manually or perhaps every two hours instead of one. You are out of luck, it's chameleons way or the highway. Want an app (not a widget) on your desktop, well you can but only along the bottom edge of the screen and only five. Have multiple gmail accounts and would like notifications for each one better be prepared to have multiple large widgets taking up screen real estate or your out of luck. As for the supposed context wonderfeature, it's been tried before. Do you really want to have to jump through extra hoops to do something because it is a certain time of day or you are logged on to a certain network, if you like those extra steps then this is for you, if you like everything ready to go at your finger tips when and where you want it then this is best left alone. For crying out loud hitting the home button at the bottom of your screen doesn't even take you to your homescreen. This home screen replacement has limited functionality, so unless twitter, facebook, and instagram updates are your entire world (and even then there are better widgets included with other apps) this app will not be worth even 15 minutes (the refund window) of your time. If you have broader interests, and need something that you can set up exactly how you want it, to be useful for work and play AVOID THIS HOMESCREEN.

They are however going to (have already?) release an SDK that allows developers to develop their own widgets so hopefully you won't be stuck with just the ones they provide. Whether this actually takes off is another matter. I might well buy it myself to try it out but at $10, and, currently, a limited widget selection, can't see it really flying off the shelves myself.
Yeah. I can't believe anyone funded this. What a joke.
Easily done with minimal effort on existing, free software.
I searched for a Chameleon thread in all the Nexus 7 forums and didn't see one, or I wouldn't have created a new thread. However I made a video for anyone interested to see it working.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUI2oPNqBW4&hd=1
But as everyone else is saying, its very limited, and after using it for over a day I am getting bugs and the out of the 5 widgets I have 3 broke and I had to recreate it to make it work again.
They had a concept video that looked very promising and one of the reasons why I wanted to support. Wireless Media streaming while still being able to use your tablet for other things, separate user profiles, and a stylish looking UI that can evolve to what you need. You can see that here: http://youtu.be/eWZ7guxro2g
So many flaws with your statements I have quoted.

1) Apex, Nova, GoLauncher, LauncherPro, etc. all force you to use a "grid" for your widgets. This isn't a flaw with Chameleon, it's called Android. YOu can have a widget take up th whole screen or just one single square. f course, most the widgets will be useless taking up just one square, but that's the case for most widgets unless the app maker made a 1x1 specific idget. Great thing with Chameleon though is that the widgets adapt to what size you make them. THe overwhelming majority of widgets you use on Apex or any other launcher don't unless the appmaker designed multiple size widgets.

2) Right NOW the only widgets that are available are from Chameleon. It's a BETA. It's goin to ave limited functionality. They haven't released the API yet. Once they do that, which they will, anyone that can code HTML5 can create a widget for Chameleon. One will not have to know how to code for Android. Saying that the only widgets you'll ever get are from Chameleon is a 100% lie unless not another single sole on the face of the earth decides to make a widget.
These widgets also have limited functionality and you have no control over that limited functionality. Partially false. You can have a lot more than five. THe bottom dock scrolls, you can put as many apps as you want in the dock.
Seriously, if you are going to come on here and criticize an app, at least learn a thing or two about it instead of spouting out a bunch of false and/or misleading statements.

Why is though that if I run Apex, Nova...etc. the majority of widgets in the play store work with these but wont with Chameleon? ..because they are written for Android and not html5? Now forgive as I dont know much about how it all works but are you saying that from now on anyone making an app and a widget for that app must build their widget to work with all standard launchers and then re-build it again to work with Chameleon seperately? How many app Devs are actually going to go through this much trouble? I'm starting to feel like I have been suckered out of 10 bucks for an app I will most likely never use now. I should have read the fine print because all I saw was a really cool looking launcher that I assumed ran all the current widgets like any other launcher.
look very nice
its not worth it tried it out myself big dissapointment. grab a couple nifty backgrounds and use the widgets out in andriod market and you can basically have same thing. what a joke this was.

Really? Do you know of an app that changes the theme/home screen your Nexus 7 based on the time of the day, or based on your location, etc.?
Update.
I received my registration and was able to install and test the Chameleon beta launcher. I have tested plenty of beta and even alpha ROMs and apps over the last few years and this is a first. Most betas of anything I have ever tested were buggy at times but you still got the feel and general idea for what the ROM or app was about. In fact a beta of anything generally has the look and functionality of the finished product with maybe still needing some bug fixes and tweaks here and there.
So how is this a first? Its the first time I have seen any Android developer take an idea and spend an hour to code into something that will at least boot or load and call it a beta. The crap I just tested isn't even an alpha!!! Honestly I don't even know what it was??? The only thing I can compare it to would be to take your home computer, uninstall windows 7 and then install one of the earliest version of windows from like 1992. Sadly I'm not even exaggerating a little bit. I'm confused!! This has to be some kind of joke or at least a scam. I still can't wrap my mind around what I saw other then I added 3 of the 5 or so silly widgets to the 3 ridiculous screens and didn't get much farther then that before the app crashed. The wallpaper has the resolution of a flip phone and was apparently made in windows paint using the paint brush tool. You do however have the option of changing the wallpaper to something exactly like it in a different color.
This has to be a scam. I'm worried because they make you authenticate using your Google credentials, password and all through their app. If you haven't spent the 5 or 10 on this yet then nows your chance to run from this as fast as you can. I'm not so worried about the 10 bucks I lost as much as I'm about what it was I really installed, what was running in the background that I don't know about and is my identity at risk. Yes folks it was that atrocious.
Pretty much you guys have posted my disappointments with the launcher. I am going to uninstall and keep up to date as to how it improves over time. I had been stock jb and was satisfied but will give nova or apex a try now.
So far, like many others, I am unimpressed with the launcher and sort of expected a bit more from it even if it is only in BETA but I don't mind. I am interested to see in what comes of it... so far, stock Android launcher suits me just fine and has done so since flashing Oxygen ROM for my HTC Desire way back when.

[q]cm10 for our note's?

Will it ever come to our device?
I come from international note 1 forums where cm10 was plentiful lol! Nah for-real though.I read around a lot and from what I gathered its gonna be near impossible till Samsung releases a proper source code... smh... correct me if I'm wrong.
I thought cm 10 was basically jb and jb is what our phone has. . And does man or hasn't even been a week yet and yet we are already rooted and have several custom roms to choose from.

There a couple of threads going about this on the international forums - In a nutshell, the official maintainers of exynos devices are fed up with Samsung's lack of release proper source. Until that happens, the best we can expect is a port/KANG.
Here's one particular thread where Entropy weighs in on his thoughts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941039
There's another one buried in the International general forums but I can't seem to find it at the moment.
EDIT - I don't know why you'd want AOSP on this phone, though. It's so buttery smooth and Touchwiz adds a lot of benefits on this phone - even more so when the Multiview patch gets pushed to us. I'd just wait for an AOSP theme and just flash that.

As someone who's come from AOSP I can't see why anyone would keep this nonsense on the phone any longer than necessary. The calendar is a prime example IMHO- other the gimmicky S-Pen notes on a picture of the calendar, the calendar doesn't separate Sync and display like CM- so I can't keep track of what my wife is up to without having to see all her appointments. The screen palm/capture thing is also tied to media hub and the rest of the (as far as I can tell ) completely useless bloatware (samsung suggest? tied to yahoo? Please.). I can't figure out how to change the toggles on the notification bar (please, please tell me there's a way to put whatever you want like sound in there as a toggle).. Wifi tether or the lack of it is another issue. Then there's the amaturish and completely annoying startup and shutdown sounds. Really, you have to disturb a meeting to shut down your phone? There's no over/under clocking except via the somewhat vague "battery optimization". Rooting and Nova has taken care of my major launcher problems. I guess I might miss S-beam unless CM ports it but honestly, I've found it extremely tedious to use IRL and not encountered anyone else who uses it has outside of the two hipsters near the apple line and the oh-so-sweet wife of the traveler.
I can't wait for CM10 so we can get Paranoid Android! It would be nice to have the status bar on the bottom within reach. I'm going to try to patiently wait it out and let the N2 price drop. My local Sprint stores are sold out anyways.

you can still use the Spen with CM10 i use it on the galaxy note 10.1 you just can't use the samsung apps like Snote, however there are many alternates that you can use that perform the same functions in the play store. so cm10 is definitely something worthwhile on these note devices if you are an aosp fan.
I want a nice stable version of MIUI and I'll be a happy camper. Keyword is STABLE...so I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Nice. Now if only it was possible to shrink the buttons down a bit, add the search button, and only have them pop up when the s-pen is out it'd be perfect

If you're rooted, try and app called "Button Savior (Root)"
You can toggle the buttons with a click of an on screen button.
Been using this for the past few days and I love it.
Thanks epicnoob66 and CECHOI for the tips.
Still can't wait for CM10 and PA. PA has the best boot animations.

+1 for CM10. I really hate all the gimmicky crap on touchwiz, I still have my GSIII which is running CM10 and it is so much nicer. It also made the GSIII faster so I don't see how the same wouldn't apply to the Note2 (although it is plenty fast as is), it has to, all the stock roms that include touchwiz are upwards of 700MB and CM10 is about 150MB, that's a lot of bloat

Stock option just press the S-Pen button and draw a "less than" symbol "<" on the screen and that's your back function.
Also for menu just hold the S-Pen button and draw a "^" symbol and that's your menu command.
Good stuff! Is there a a gesture for Home? I find it tricky to press the Home button with the pen.
I saw the samsung galaxy note2 n7100 has begun getting nighltlies. Does that mean we will get it soon?

Touchwiz Features/S pen Funtionality On CM Based ROMS (2016)

I own Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and now in 2016 its showing its age, especially when on touchwiz based custom roms. Its not their fault since with time simple apps become more CPU and resources demanding and older devices struggle to keep up.One solution is to install mods/custom roms, especially AOSP/CM based roms.
I am currently sporting Resurrection Remix -Marshmallow v5.6.8 with Agni PureCM Kernel v4.5.3 and yeh i am so much happy with my setup.
But i do miss touchwiz features esp. my S pen features and its capabilities.
So this thread is to help out all those who are running aosp/cm based roms and are looking to get some s pen functionality on their roms.
My goal here is to provide best and closest possible alternatives to touchwiz stocks apps/features. Please note that there are many other alternatives than those mentioned here.they do provide somewhat similar funtionality or maybe even more in some cases, but arent similar to stock behaviour.
so 1st thing first i am highly thankful to guys at this thread that help me get started with spen features on cm/aosp based rom. Please do check out there thread, you will find it useful. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
1) for s command replacement there is this paid app called spen command.it works very well, though needs some tinkering to get the best out of it. link to thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-app-samsung-devices-provided-stylus-t3000448
link to official website: http://www.emandt.net/Android/SPenCommand/Website/
2)for screenshot we have a couple of options:-
a) using spen command app listed above, you can long tap spen on screen to screenshot it and then annotate, crop etc it.
b) use screenshot ultimate app on play store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.screenshotultimate&hl=en
Once installed open the app and let it decide best method to take screenshot. You also need to select trigger to screenshot, saving location and other settings as you see fit.once properly configured ,this app works like a charm.see this thread screenshot ultimate section to properly configure this app (text around the screenshot in post) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
After setting up the app, head to spen command app>side panel>settings>quick menu>scroll down to application shortcut tab>press on any blank shortcut no:>select app activities from menu>wait for list to populate>select screenshot ultimate>select viewEmptySearchButton.
3) for snote replacement ,i found squid app to be best . https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.projectpapyrus&hl=en
4) for photo annotation (in stock touchwiz gallery, opening image and then option menu gives you this feature to annotate on picture),there is no perfect solution as touchwiz but Skitch by evernote (officially discontinued now) is a close match. you need to share the image to annotate via share button in gallery apps. http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/32aPQrWB/file.html.
5) for s pen attach/detach sounds, use spen command with sound in ogg format.
6) touchwiz stock camera replacement. there are many good option
a) Camera fv-5 = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.camera.pro&hl=en. NO VIDEO RECORDING CAPABILITIES
b) Lenovo Supercamera,my favorite one. There are many version . link to official thread and the version i use are here.
official link= http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665714
version i use= http://d-h.st/ZYB
c) Snap camera v8.1.0= this one had better HDR output than lenovo supercamera, but i face storage and saving problem in external sd card. Also i dont like video recording in this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055140
7) touchwiz music = i prefer playerpro. but there are so many i wonder if any audiophile actually use stock app
8) radio app= spirit fm 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/spirit-fm/app-spirit2-free-source-real-fm-radio-t2951455
9) action memo= i cant find the link so i will attach the one i am using.
10) another spen command app(PAID APP) alternative is Note Buddy(FREE). it requires CM spen addon(FREE) to be installed first.
link to note buddy= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
link to cm spen addon= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen2
you can also use this app called spen launcher to get air command like menu= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.spenlauncher
these are the latest to date replacements for spen and touchwiz features for aosp/cm based roms. These are in no way perfect solutions and thus i urge you to help spread the word and help me in improving this article. if you know any better solutions/replacements please post in here.
i am still missing certain s pen and touchwiz features like smart select, smart stay and some others, but well you have to compromise on something to get something better.

Spen command does tht
I dunno why this app is misses here,
Can be added
Note buddy - free (great app to launch apps on removal spen and other apps)
REQUIRES
Cm - spen add-on(enables all apps to access spen features..
For example post memo has a built in option to launch on spen removal, cannot open without spen add on.
Cm Spen add-on does this.......
Great app....

Yes I am aware of that, but spen command doesn't require these addon to install first. Also it's provides a more stock note 2/note 3 like command functionality,
Building spen gestures and screenshot annotate is another feature.
Other features include spen pointer, spen detection, clipboard manager etc.
Overall I found spen command to be much better than note buddy

Very true but it is a paid app.....
There should be at least one good free app listed
Ive been using GMD SPen Control for a while now (paid app) and seeing that SPen Command is not even in the play store (looks a bit fishy to me)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34085846 (A Mod removed the play store link there so i wont post it here, just search for it)
Also for showing the S Pen Pointer at least CM has an option to enable a Mouse Cursor for the Stylus, i quite like it

well i have provided a direct link to official website for spen command app.so its not fishy or anything. there is also an active xda thread for spen command app(Link in OP).And just because it not on play store doesnt mean its fake.
I have tried GMD Spen app.although it provides a good funtionality ,it cant compete with feature set of spen command app and given both of these are paid app,i personally prefer spen command.
for pointer ,yes cm has mouse cursor for stylus, but a small dot for spen provided in spen command app is more pleasing
yeah i started reading a bit in the xda thread and i see the reason why it isnt listed on the play store. Too bad there is no trial Version, i would like to test it more extensively than for 48 hours to see how it integrates into everyday usage and how it compares to GMD Spen Control, but the developer made it pretty clear that he has no plans for a feature reduced trial version.
Also cant say that i like the automatic change feature for SELinux, for most of us its already set to permissive but thats a choice we make before flashing a rom or if we change it ourselves later on, changing it within the app feels kind of wrong (the way it looks without this feature the app would still be on the play store)
With fishy i didnt mean fake, its just strange to publish an app solely on their own website and only accepting paypal payments, maybe fishy wasnt the right word

i understand you. 48 hours in enough to get to know the worth of app.besides you can always get refund if you dont like.
just try it.i know you will like how closely it simulate air command in touchwiz rom.
many developers dont publish their app on play store either due to one reason or other. As long as there is an active xda thread and a complementary website, its good enough to trust that app is okay.
will this make my s pen work on CM?

Samsung S Pen Features on Note 2 Custom ROM

I installed Xenon HD based Custom ROM for Nougat 7.1.2 on my Note 2 without thinking about what happens to S-Pen and the apps that it use like S-Note. But I am liking the phone after I installed this.
Hence thought I will check if there is a way I can use S-Pen and the associated apps on this Custom ROM.
Any help or, information would be highly appreciated.
I really liked the S-Note app and would like to use it or, something like it.
for note taking i currently use "Squid - Take Notes & Markup PDFs" it has some inapp purchases but the basic stuff is available for free.
But pretty much any note taking app should have support for the spen, at least the bigger ones (EverNote and such, but i never used them)
Then there are options like SPenCommand and NoteBuddy (not sure if it works on Nougat)
My preferred App for Stylus gestures is GMD SPen Control but sadly it seems that app is no longer maintained and does not work on Nougat

The problem with most of the notes app is that there is no handwriting recognition and hence S-Pen pretty much becomes useless. That is one of the reasons for my displeasure.
I would like to use the features of S-Pen. And there were a lot of my notes in S-Note which is something I haven't been able to recover or, use now.
SPencommand and Notebuddy doesn't seem to be working on Nougat.
SPencommand definitely does, i tried it for a short period but ended up getting a refund because it does not support custom gestures.
Oh i thought you meant just scribbling down some notes, i never used the recognition feature to turn it into actual text.
As far as i know there is no way to run the Samsung apps on AOSP or import data from them.
But i personally never used them, maybe someone else has some ideas.

Yeah, you are right. I tried a few others including SPenCommand. But nothing worked until now. Looks like I have to finally convince myself of letting it go..
