I own Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and now in 2016 its showing its age, especially when on touchwiz based custom roms. Its not their fault since with time simple apps become more CPU and resources demanding and older devices struggle to keep up.One solution is to install mods/custom roms, especially AOSP/CM based roms.
I am currently sporting Resurrection Remix -Marshmallow v5.6.8 with Agni PureCM Kernel v4.5.3 and yeh i am so much happy with my setup.
But i do miss touchwiz features esp. my S pen features and its capabilities.
So this thread is to help out all those who are running aosp/cm based roms and are looking to get some s pen functionality on their roms.
My goal here is to provide best and closest possible alternatives to touchwiz stocks apps/features. Please note that there are many other alternatives than those mentioned here.they do provide somewhat similar funtionality or maybe even more in some cases, but arent similar to stock behaviour.
so 1st thing first i am highly thankful to guys at this thread that help me get started with spen features on cm/aosp based rom. Please do check out there thread, you will find it useful. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
1) for s command replacement there is this paid app called spen command.it works very well, though needs some tinkering to get the best out of it. link to thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-app-samsung-devices-provided-stylus-t3000448
link to official website: http://www.emandt.net/Android/SPenCommand/Website/
2)for screenshot we have a couple of options:-
a) using spen command app listed above, you can long tap spen on screen to screenshot it and then annotate, crop etc it.
b) use screenshot ultimate app on play store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.screenshotultimate&hl=en
Once installed open the app and let it decide best method to take screenshot. You also need to select trigger to screenshot, saving location and other settings as you see fit.once properly configured ,this app works like a charm.see this thread screenshot ultimate section to properly configure this app (text around the screenshot in post) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611415
After setting up the app, head to spen command app>side panel>settings>quick menu>scroll down to application shortcut tab>press on any blank shortcut no:>select app activities from menu>wait for list to populate>select screenshot ultimate>select viewEmptySearchButton.
3) for snote replacement ,i found squid app to be best . https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.projectpapyrus&hl=en
4) for photo annotation (in stock touchwiz gallery, opening image and then option menu gives you this feature to annotate on picture),there is no perfect solution as touchwiz but Skitch by evernote (officially discontinued now) is a close match. you need to share the image to annotate via share button in gallery apps. http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/32aPQrWB/file.html.
5) for s pen attach/detach sounds, use spen command with sound in ogg format.
6) touchwiz stock camera replacement. there are many good option
a) Camera fv-5 = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.camera.pro&hl=en. NO VIDEO RECORDING CAPABILITIES
b) Lenovo Supercamera,my favorite one. There are many version . link to official thread and the version i use are here.
official link= http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665714
version i use= http://d-h.st/ZYB
c) Snap camera v8.1.0= this one had better HDR output than lenovo supercamera, but i face storage and saving problem in external sd card. Also i dont like video recording in this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055140
7) touchwiz music = i prefer playerpro. but there are so many i wonder if any audiophile actually use stock app
8) radio app= spirit fm 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/spirit-fm/app-spirit2-free-source-real-fm-radio-t2951455
9) action memo= i cant find the link so i will attach the one i am using.
10) another spen command app(PAID APP) alternative is Note Buddy(FREE). it requires CM spen addon(FREE) to be installed first.
link to note buddy= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
link to cm spen addon= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen2
you can also use this app called spen launcher to get air command like menu= https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.spenlauncher
these are the latest to date replacements for spen and touchwiz features for aosp/cm based roms. These are in no way perfect solutions and thus i urge you to help spread the word and help me in improving this article. if you know any better solutions/replacements please post in here.
i am still missing certain s pen and touchwiz features like smart select, smart stay and some others, but well you have to compromise on something to get something better.

Spen command does tht
I dunno why this app is misses here,
Can be added
Note buddy - free (great app to launch apps on removal spen and other apps)
REQUIRES
Cm - spen add-on(enables all apps to access spen features..
For example post memo has a built in option to launch on spen removal, cannot open without spen add on.
Cm Spen add-on does this.......
Great app....

Yes I am aware of that, but spen command doesn't require these addon to install first. Also it's provides a more stock note 2/note 3 like command functionality,
Building spen gestures and screenshot annotate is another feature.
Other features include spen pointer, spen detection, clipboard manager etc.
Overall I found spen command to be much better than note buddy

Very true but it is a paid app.....
There should be at least one good free app listed
Ive been using GMD SPen Control for a while now (paid app) and seeing that SPen Command is not even in the play store (looks a bit fishy to me)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34085846 (A Mod removed the play store link there so i wont post it here, just search for it)
Also for showing the S Pen Pointer at least CM has an option to enable a Mouse Cursor for the Stylus, i quite like it

well i have provided a direct link to official website for spen command app.so its not fishy or anything. there is also an active xda thread for spen command app(Link in OP).And just because it not on play store doesnt mean its fake.
I have tried GMD Spen app.although it provides a good funtionality ,it cant compete with feature set of spen command app and given both of these are paid app,i personally prefer spen command.
for pointer ,yes cm has mouse cursor for stylus, but a small dot for spen provided in spen command app is more pleasing
yeah i started reading a bit in the xda thread and i see the reason why it isnt listed on the play store. Too bad there is no trial Version, i would like to test it more extensively than for 48 hours to see how it integrates into everyday usage and how it compares to GMD Spen Control, but the developer made it pretty clear that he has no plans for a feature reduced trial version.
Also cant say that i like the automatic change feature for SELinux, for most of us its already set to permissive but thats a choice we make before flashing a rom or if we change it ourselves later on, changing it within the app feels kind of wrong (the way it looks without this feature the app would still be on the play store)
With fishy i didnt mean fake, its just strange to publish an app solely on their own website and only accepting paypal payments, maybe fishy wasnt the right word

i understand you. 48 hours in enough to get to know the worth of app.besides you can always get refund if you dont like.
just try it.i know you will like how closely it simulate air command in touchwiz rom.
many developers dont publish their app on play store either due to one reason or other. As long as there is an active xda thread and a complementary website, its good enough to trust that app is okay.

OK,
Maybe someone has tried an app and can recommend something other than S-Note.
I need a note taking app that can, not only put my quick notes in a widget form, so I can read/edit the note (with the S-pen) without launching the app itself. And be able to schedule the note with an alarm of some sort. Seems simple enough, but I've tried all I can find, and nothing seems to do this simple enough function.
Anyone know of something can do this? Or, is the S-pen still in it's infancy stage?
S-note is ok, but no widget ability and no schedule or timer ability=LAME for me.
you aren't going to find any s pen third party apps until all android devices adopt it... in fact the s suggest spen apps and the stock apps are probably the only apps that consciously use the pen

There are other apps that work great with the S Penn. I use Lecturenotes on a regular basis and it is a great note taking app (that fully supports the pen and button), however I don't think it takes care of all the OP requirements.
Beesy - smart taking notes for iPad
Beesy is the All in one App to manage your business activity and manage your meeting.
Beesy provides a smart note taking app / To-Do application that understands the underlying tasks and suppresses unnecessary operations. It addresses 3 main pain points of business meetings:
- Quickly take notes during meetings and do not miss critical information,
- Send instant meeting minutes right after the meeting in less than a minute,
- Easily follow-up on actions with a powerful To-Do organizer reusing 100% of your notes and your calendar.
You can try it, i think you not be disapointed.
Marco
I've been using Note Everything, and like it.
I don't think it can make a widget from a note. I share notes into GTD DGT to track tasks, though. It also has some built-in tricks of its own that I haven't fully explored.
Re: supporting the s-pen, I believe that as long as the app can use the system-supplied keyboard with handwriting recognition it will support the s-pen, the app doesn't need a special capability to do this.
[ edit ]
It turns out Note Everything can make a widget from a note, who knew? I'm not a fan of the widget's appearance, though.

Anybody know if the auto launch of S Note when removing the S Pen can/does work on AOSP / AOKP builds of Android? I'm assuming that it will require a patch or an app to add this functionality to an aosp build, is there something out there? Also assuming you lose this function when leaving TW. Additionally I'm not looking to use a different launcher on a 'stock' device as I want to move to PA.
...sorry ahead of time if this has been answered already, did a search and didn't find anything.

SNote is a TWiz only app. The best available substitute is Papyrus... But the Spen detach sensor currently doesn't do anything in AOSP.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Anybody have an in with the devs of Tasker or AutomateIt? ...Tasker's feature requests are closed.
Asking them to add an SPen trigger; set it to launch the Papyrus app would be perfect.
So Im going to pick up a note 3 next week, sick of verizons 120 dollar phone bills, so gonna move to T-mobile. mainly for the Wi-Fi calling since i work in a metal dungeon with no cell coverage.
I will probably go ahead and get SU, but wait until cyanogenmod kit kat comes out to do a custom rom.. Does anyone have any idea how many (if any at all) of the note 3 software packages we will lose? i mean will the s pen and wi-fi calling and all the other options still work like it does out of the box?
Nope, with cm you will lose everything. Wifi calling, s pen features, all the motion features, camera, etc... That's why I stick to touchwiz.

No it's a fact. I don't need there to be a cm rom to know those features will be lost. You know why? Cuz its AOSP, and all the features are part of TOUCHWIZ. So don't try to be a smartass.

You're not wrong, but you're not really right either. You won't lose EVERYTHING, you'll lose the TouchWiz-specific stuff and gain the AOSP-specific stuff.
WiFi calling will be gone, that's a T-Mobile specific thing really but it's baked into the stock ROM and not open source, thus GONE.
S-Pen hardware itself likely will work, as its driver is baked into the kernel which is open source. It will show up as a pointing device like a mouse, but third party S-Pen supporting apps will still be able to read pressure sensitivity and S-Pen button states. The TouchWiz-specific S-Pen functionality will be gone such as pen popup menu, pen windows, pen screenshot, and other pen actions built into the TouchWiz software. You'll still be able to take notes and draw with third party apps (of which many exist).
Motion features will be gone, those are TouchWiz specific software things. The motion sensors themselves will still be usable by apps that use motion features themselves, but the TouchWiz software motion features are GONE.
Camera will still exist, but instead of the TouchWiz camera app it will be the AOSP (or modified version thereof) camera app. You'll still have all the camera hardware features (flash, touch focus, video, etc) but the software image enhancements TW provides will be gone (replaced by whatever software image enhancements the ROM's app has though). CM's version of the AOSP camera app is quite good though, on my Note 1 it had plenty of features and took great pics. There's also Focal. The front camera is also still usable both by the camera app and by video chat programs. Camera features like 4K and slow motion video may not be supported right out of the box, but CM's been pretty good at updating the AOSP camera app as new hardware comes out. Remember that both of those camera features aren't Samsung's doing but rather features of the Snapdragon 800 SoC and many non-Samsung phones (including AOSP's flagship Nexus 5) are using that processor. You can be pretty much guaranteed those will be supported.
So, tl;dr: quit spreading the FUD that AOSP removes critical functionality. It does remove a lot of software functionality, but the hardware will still be supported and what you lose in TouchWiz features you make up for in custom ROM features. If you like the TW features stick with TW, but if you like the custom ROM features you're probably better off with a custom AOSP-based ROM. There are already attempts to bring things like multi-window and such to AOSP in projects like Halo for Paranoid Android and OmniROM which has splitscreen working. More options are a good thing, not a bad one.
As soon as Google Voice is integrated with Hangouts (of which it already is on iOS, grrr), WiFi calling will be available on AOSP. You will just have to set up a free Google Voice number, then have incoming calls be forwarded to Google Talk (Hangouts) and your regular number. So if you have a cell connection, answer it with the stock dialer; if you don't have a cell connection, answer it with Hangouts. You will have to give out your Google Voice number (or port your number to Google Voice), but after that, just direct all cellular calls to go through Google Voice, then you will only have one number.
A great thing about giving out your Google Voice number instead of your regular number, is that if you get a call from an advertiser (spam), you can set Google Voice to play a "this number has been disconnected" recording to that number if they call again (call blocking/filtering). That way, you will never get a call from them again, even if they keep calling. Again, all this is free except to port your number.
Of course, we have yet to see Google Voice integration with Hangouts on Android, and it is looking like May 14th, 2014 will likely be when we may see it.
thanks for the replies. i think ill stick with touchwiz for a while, i liked it in my 14 minutes playing with it, so im sure ill like it more once i actually own the phone.
I was hoping we could pry the software from t mobiles rom and apply it to a custom rom, but i guess the simplest thing for me will be to just root and get rid of the bloat + autostarts.
I installed Xenon HD based Custom ROM for Nougat 7.1.2 on my Note 2 without thinking about what happens to S-Pen and the apps that it use like S-Note. But I am liking the phone after I installed this.
Hence thought I will check if there is a way I can use S-Pen and the associated apps on this Custom ROM.
Any help or, information would be highly appreciated.
I really liked the S-Note app and would like to use it or, something like it.
for note taking i currently use "Squid - Take Notes & Markup PDFs" it has some inapp purchases but the basic stuff is available for free.
But pretty much any note taking app should have support for the spen, at least the bigger ones (EverNote and such, but i never used them)
Then there are options like SPenCommand and NoteBuddy (not sure if it works on Nougat)
My preferred App for Stylus gestures is GMD SPen Control but sadly it seems that app is no longer maintained and does not work on Nougat

The problem with most of the notes app is that there is no handwriting recognition and hence S-Pen pretty much becomes useless. That is one of the reasons for my displeasure.
I would like to use the features of S-Pen. And there were a lot of my notes in S-Note which is something I haven't been able to recover or, use now.
SPencommand and Notebuddy doesn't seem to be working on Nougat.
SPencommand definitely does, i tried it for a short period but ended up getting a refund because it does not support custom gestures.
Oh i thought you meant just scribbling down some notes, i never used the recognition feature to turn it into actual text.
As far as i know there is no way to run the Samsung apps on AOSP or import data from them.
But i personally never used them, maybe someone else has some ideas.

I also just found it around 2 days ago and guess what? Im currently running it now because who in the world would not love that all-screen estate? Navbars are hidden (with adb shell command) yet you can still navigate your phone. I've set mine like that of iPhone x's gestures and I'm really liking it.
In-app links and guides are pretty useful too because I'm a noob when it comes to adb shell, I know nothing yet I still manage to get it working. This app is still in its unreleased version but it is already so stable.
And ofcourse, to complement the iphone x gestures, I also have the ios 12 launcher together with samsung task changer.

Sorry
I didn't specified ... I mean nova launcher and thoose ones are fine, i never had a problem but other launchers like fake samsung launchers and ios ones from the app store
I downloaded a few on my old phones and i had bad experience like ads from knowhere, ram optimizer (actually killing all the apps and then the phone started lagging etc

Never conclude when you havent even tried them all, because there's always new launchers coming out. Never had those "bad experience" with my launcher.
Back to main topic now.
edit: it works now!
Thanks for that tip! Tried it, liked it, bought it. But even spending the money didn't make it the pro version it still shows the option to buy and doesn't allow me to use the pro features. Any suggestions? I wrote a mail to the developer but no reaction till now (I wrote the mail just a few hours ago so nothing to complain about that!).

The app seem to come from / be endorsed by the MIUI team https://en.miui.com/thread-4147804-1-1.html
I was looking for an app like this, it's perfect.
If I remember correctly, Havoc Oreo has a kind of this built in ( although it's less customizable )

i agree. i've tried a lot of gestures apps and the problem with infinity display is that being curved sometimes makes you miss the back gesture (swipe from left or right) while with oneplus gesture u never miss one beacuse gestures come always from the bottom of the screen

That is my opinion because i had xiaomi device and i liked that future!
The app is great.
I had a Xiaomi Mi8 SE and I really missed the edge gestures it had. There are other edge gesture apps but this is the only one which adds those smexy animations like on MIUI.
I am probably missing something, but why don't you guys just use Samsung Good Lock?
There's "One Handed Mode" app enabling navigation gestures.
It has been featured on XDA, too.
