Coming from a nexus s 4g on sprint I plan on getting a t-mobile GS3 until the nexus 5, but I don't like touchwiz. I'll give it a chance but more than likely flash a custom rom. Coming from a nexus where it's as simple as typing a few commands, what are the major differences with SGS3 as far as
1. bootloader
2. flashing roms
3.flashing kernels
4. returning to stock

You know your in the galaxy note 2 forms not the galaxy s 3 forms right?
1) bootloader = download mode
2) flash root in download mode from computer using odin, fash new recovery there also.
3) now flash roms/kernels/modems from recovery or odin depending on how they tell you in thread
4) find the return to stock thread, usually requires stock recovery flash, stock rom flash, and triangle away usage (not in that order though)

I have a rooted GSM Galaxy Nexus that I want to return to stock ROM and Stock recovery image.
I was wondering if I can do this using Odlin and flashing the Google (yakju-icl53f-factory-89fccaac.tgz) file I downloaded from the Google site? This is suppose to be the 4.0.3 image file for the GSM version and should have the ROM and Recovery images?
I have flashed stock recovery files using Odlin on my Galaxy S2 in the past and it worked like a charm. Just looking for the simplest way to go back to stock.
If the Odlin method will work, do I boot up using the power+volume down key to get into download mode and just select the tar file using the PDA key and flash it? Do I just flash over my existing ROM without wiping?
I haven't used Odin since my fascinate days but you can use fastboot if you'd like, I find it to be easier than Odin.

I may sound like a noob but which files do I use with fastboot? I would like to get a link to the proper files and procedure to flash my GSM Galaxy Nexus back to the stock ROM and Recovery image for 4.0.3.
Hey everyone, I just finally upgraded from my Droid X to a Nexus on Verizon. I want to go right ahead and start customizing my phone. I'm not new to installing custom roms and such, but I think the process on the Nexus may be a little different than the X due to the locked bootloader and other things. For my Nexus I'm planning on installing a custom rom and kernel and I just want to make sure I have the order of things correct.
My plan is to:
1. Get 4.0.4 ICS with an OTA update
2. Root with GNex Toolkit
3. Unlock bootloader with GNex Toolkit
4. Make a nandroid backup
5. Flash AOKP Build 37 (is this compatible with 4.0.4?) with CWM (wiping data/factory reset first ofc)
6. Flash franco kernel
Do I have that right? And one more thing - what does "toro" mean?
Thanks
Toro is the Verizon version of galaxy nexus and maguro is the GSM version of galaxy nexus
For the steps you should root it with gnexus toolkit first then download and flash aokp b37 and finally dl Franco kernel and flash it.

so i don't need to unlock the bootloader?
You need to unlock the bootloader in order to flash roms. The toolkit should allow you to unlock it.
You don't have to wait for the 4.0.4 update though, you should be fine just making a nandroid of what your phone comes/came with.

Your points numbered 1, 2, and 4 are useless if you are planning to flash a custom ROM right away.
This is what I would suggest:
1) Do not use a toolkit.
2) Install 1wayjonny's drivers to your PC.
3) Unlock the bootloader yourself using fastboot (see parts of this post. fastboot file in the attachment).
4) Install CWM for toro youself using fastboot.
5) Flash the latest mysid update from here if you don't already have it.
6) Use stock ICS (rooted or not) for a while to see how you like it, and so that you can have a basis of comparison when you install AOKP.
7) Then, if you have anything you want to save do a nandroid backup
8) Flash the custom ROM your want in CWM and wipe data and cache.
9) Use it as is for a while, so you will have a basis of comparison when you flash a different kernel.
10) Flash the kernel you want in CWM and wipe cache.
I will be getting a new Note 2 in the mail soon from Rogers. What is the first thing I should do after opening it? I'd like to back it up, so that I can always restore to stock. I have read the Verizon Note 2's have a locked bootloader, but I haven't found a clear answer on weather or not the Rogers/ATT one is locked.
I plan to root it using CF-Auto Root, and then install TWRP Recovery. How do I back the phone up first, in case something goes wrong?
I am coming from an iPhone but I have a Nexus 7 and I love the ability to re-flash a stock OS to it using one of the toolkits. Is there somewhere you can download the unmodified stock OS for the Note2?
Thanks for any answers.
No reason to back what you have up as you can download the stock recovery and stock ROM/unroot it from this forum if that time ever comes, you can download these repositories ahead of time if you'd like, good to have.
You're on the right track after rooting and installing TWRP, then choose a stable ROM if you wish,
Install AdAway
OC\UV
Rom Toolbox
Many more, make it your own and have fun!

I just did this yesterday to my I317 ATT GNote2.
On your desktop/laptop computer:
1) download/install the offiical Samsung USB Drivers on your desktop/laptop computer. There are links in the Development Section (How To) where you can get these as well.
2) download Odin3 to your computer (again, follow the stellar steps outlined in Dev Section).
3) download the CF-AutoRoot tar (found in Chainfire's CF-AutoRoot thread)
4) follow the steps in CF-AutoRoot thread to flash via Odin3... when complete, you'll still have stock firmware and stock recovery on your phone, but it will also be rooted (your flash counter will also increment, but you can fix this with TriangleAway app). Now you can flash a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM). If TWRP, on phone, download/install "GooManager" from PlayStore. From the app itself, you can install TWRP as your Recovery on the phone... Again, search is truly your best resource.. in the GNote2 Development sections (search for Stickies or "HowTo's").
There is no way to "completely backup" a stock phone with stock recovery (3e Recovery), so once you get rooted and get TWRP (or CWM) Recovery, you can do your first backup. This backup will capture the Stock Firmware (rom, kernel, modem [if on TWRP]) and your custom recovery... keep this safe.
You can always get the complete "Samsung Official Stock Firmware" by going to "SamMobile", create an account... then on Firmware page, just search for "I317"... it will display all the US and Canadian I317 Official Stock Firmware (rom/kernel/modem/stock recovery) which you can download install if you wish to return to "out-of-box" condition.

Never owned a Nexus device due to the lack of storage (16GB not enough). Got the GNex for my mom and just got a few questions in terms of root/OTA. It's a canadian GNex yakjuux that i updated to 4.2 and converted to international yakju. I love AOSP based phones but 16GB is the only thing that prevents me from hopping on the Nexus train. So CM/AOKP on an S3 is as close as it will get until Google gives more options.
I was thinking of installing CM/AOKP but I don't think she will need that many features so I want to keep her stock to make it simple and bug free as possible. I want install TWRP and root the phone and that's it.
1.) I know rooted phones don't get OTA's do to locked bootloaders and custom recoveries, is this the case for the Nexus line?
2.) If OTA download will they install themselves on a custom recovery?
3.) Will the install replace the custom recovery back to stock?
1. you have to be completely stock, you can be rooted but everything else including recovery kernel, radio, etc must be stock in order to get a OTA
2. if you download the OTA zip you can flash it in recovery but even then you can ONLY have root/custom recovery other than that you must be completely stock
3. Yes the custom recovery will be replaced by the stock
PS next time search the forums these question have been asked multiple times, and also post in the correct section next time...
Hi guys,
I've read a lot and I searched for answers and I would like some help with confirming the steps required to root a Galaxy S3 on the Rogers network (Ontario Canada).
I see that there is a toolkit with instructions so that'll be a good place to start but I'm not sure what the next steps would be.
For example, do I need to upgrade the radios/firmware?
What ROMS are stable and work good on the Rogers network? I see that liquid looks amazing but there is a note about not working with Rogers in the OP.
I would appreciate if someone could give me the outline of what needs to be done to root the phone, and ROM recommendations considering I'm looking for stability first rather than having a lot of features that aren't fully functional yet.
I've rooted phones before (HTC Incredible, thunderbolt, droid etc..) but here in Canada, it looks like I need to be careful because Rogers isn't Verizon!
Thanks
Canada s3 = I747M, AT&T = I747 = the same.
I am on Rogers myself.
There are many different threads tho root and flash custom recoveries. Here are a couple.
1 - download the big stock Odin package with root injected for your device. If all you want is stock with root stop here. This method will not effect your flash counter. If you would like to flash custom roms you can use terminal to add custom recovery. Booting into custom recovery will effect your flash counter.

[HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel]
2 - download Odin flashable custom recovery. Then flash a root via what ever recovery you choose (twrp or cwm). This method will effect your flash counter.

Flash counter doesn't really matter as you can use triangle away to reset the counter before you Odin flash to factory stock.

As for Rom wise that will be up to you as each user's preferences are different. Have fun and flash away trying different roms/kernels. As long as it's for d2att, d2can, i747 or i747M you will be ok. Just make sure you read the original post and a bit of the thread.
If you want all the fancy Samsung bells and whistles stick with TouchWiz based roms. If you want a non bloatware android vanilla stock feel go with cm. If you want added customizations go with aokp, paranoid android, Pac Rom, if you want stability stick with rooted stock touchwiz but the non touchwiz 4.2.2 roms are pretty rock solid imho.
With cm, aokp, or non touchwiz roms you may run into caller Id issues with the latest modem. I run task650's AOKP and use I747MUMLJ1 or I747MVLLH1 modems.

Wow, I wish I could hit the 'Thank' button more than once, that's a LOT of really good information.
This might sound silly but the reason I want to root is because I'm really bored with the phone and I want to stay away from the temptation of buying the HTC One
Can you tell I was bored? Lol
I have been itching to upgrade to the s4 my self. The AT&T locked boot loader is holding me back. It is nice that the T-Mobile and international roms are compatible. Holding off for the specs of the Google s4 to make up my mind.
I barely ever use touchwiz roms so there is no real big reasons to upgrade as most of the differences are touchwiz based additions so there really isn't that much differences as long as we have developers keeping the latest os alive on this device.
I do love the idea of a nexus like s4 if the specs are the same as the AT&T module minus the locked boot loader

Personally, I miss sense sometimes but mostly because when it came to custom ROMs, it was so much faster than any other launcher. When I try a ROM on the S3, it'll be something like Liquidrom. I'm not a fan of touchwiz either, I use Nova which is basic/boring but fast and reliable.
I might start with Stock rooted, freeze the bloat and see how that feels.
When I extract the image, I get a .tar.md5, should I rename it to just .tar before flashing it with Odin?
EDIT: NM, got it!
i currently have stock rom and no root. i want to reset the counter but keep stock rom. what is the process?
do i use odin to root it, then triangle away, then odin flash with unrooted stock rom?
confused! thanks!

I believe triangle away requires root access.
Flash a pre rooted stock Rom with Odin, then triangle away, then back to stock using Odin.
I'm rooting this phone and when I connect it in download mode odin isn't recognizing it. I have installed kies, separately installed the drives, and ended any kies processes. I have also tried 2 different usb cables and all the usb ports. What should I do? (I am using an old Compaq, could that be the problem?)
