Hi guys,
I've read a lot and I searched for answers and I would like some help with confirming the steps required to root a Galaxy S3 on the Rogers network (Ontario Canada).
I see that there is a toolkit with instructions so that'll be a good place to start but I'm not sure what the next steps would be.
For example, do I need to upgrade the radios/firmware?
What ROMS are stable and work good on the Rogers network? I see that liquid looks amazing but there is a note about not working with Rogers in the OP.
I would appreciate if someone could give me the outline of what needs to be done to root the phone, and ROM recommendations considering I'm looking for stability first rather than having a lot of features that aren't fully functional yet.
I've rooted phones before (HTC Incredible, thunderbolt, droid etc..) but here in Canada, it looks like I need to be careful because Rogers isn't Verizon!
Thanks
Canada s3 = I747M, AT&T = I747 = the same.
I am on Rogers myself.
There are many different threads tho root and flash custom recoveries. Here are a couple.
1 - download the big stock Odin package with root injected for your device. If all you want is stock with root stop here. This method will not effect your flash counter. If you would like to flash custom roms you can use terminal to add custom recovery. Booting into custom recovery will effect your flash counter.

2 - download Odin flashable custom recovery. Then flash a root via what ever recovery you choose (twrp or cwm). This method will effect your flash counter.

Flash counter doesn't really matter as you can use triangle away to reset the counter before you Odin flash to factory stock.

As for Rom wise that will be up to you as each user's preferences are different. Have fun and flash away trying different roms/kernels. As long as it's for d2att, d2can, i747 or i747M you will be ok. Just make sure you read the original post and a bit of the thread.
If you want all the fancy Samsung bells and whistles stick with TouchWiz based roms. If you want a non bloatware android vanilla stock feel go with cm. If you want added customizations go with aokp, paranoid android, Pac Rom, if you want stability stick with rooted stock touchwiz but the non touchwiz 4.2.2 roms are pretty rock solid imho.
With cm, aokp, or non touchwiz roms you may run into caller Id issues with the latest modem. I run task650's AOKP and use I747MUMLJ1 or I747MVLLH1 modems.

Wow, I wish I could hit the 'Thank' button more than once, that's a LOT of really good information.
This might sound silly but the reason I want to root is because I'm really bored with the phone and I want to stay away from the temptation of buying the HTC One
Can you tell I was bored? Lol
I have been itching to upgrade to the s4 my self. The AT&T locked boot loader is holding me back. It is nice that the T-Mobile and international roms are compatible. Holding off for the specs of the Google s4 to make up my mind.
I barely ever use touchwiz roms so there is no real big reasons to upgrade as most of the differences are touchwiz based additions so there really isn't that much differences as long as we have developers keeping the latest os alive on this device.
I do love the idea of a nexus like s4 if the specs are the same as the AT&T module minus the locked boot loader

Personally, I miss sense sometimes but mostly because when it came to custom ROMs, it was so much faster than any other launcher. When I try a ROM on the S3, it'll be something like Liquidrom. I'm not a fan of touchwiz either, I use Nova which is basic/boring but fast and reliable.
I might start with Stock rooted, freeze the bloat and see how that feels.
When I extract the image, I get a .tar.md5, should I rename it to just .tar before flashing it with Odin?
EDIT: NM, got it!
i currently have stock rom and no root. i want to reset the counter but keep stock rom. what is the process?
do i use odin to root it, then triangle away, then odin flash with unrooted stock rom?
confused! thanks!

I believe triangle away requires root access.
Flash a pre rooted stock Rom with Odin, then triangle away, then back to stock using Odin.
I'm rooting this phone and when I connect it in download mode odin isn't recognizing it. I have installed kies, separately installed the drives, and ended any kies processes. I have also tried 2 different usb cables and all the usb ports. What should I do? (I am using an old Compaq, could that be the problem?)

I hate starting new threads cause, well, everyone else hates it lol.
But my hand is forced. I want the multi-window feature on my phone and like the impatient people we are, I want it now. Well the only problem is that the only way of getting said feature is too root your phone and install a custom ROM. Which is perfectly fine, I have no quarrels with custom roms, in fact I love them, I think the developers are amazing and truly unlock the full potential of the phone when they do make custom ROMS. However, one thing I do notice is that sometimes the roms become buggy and laggy after a while. Anyway's I digress...
My true reason too create this thread is that I need help in rooting my phone as its new and I paid full price for it, the last thing I want to do is brick it. By all means I am no noob, I've been rooting all my phones. Its just that I see that there is no direct root method for the t889v, I would assume it to be similar to t889 and with an addition to flashing the t889v modem/radio.
But if there is someone out there, who could assist me in successfully doing so I will be mighty grateful to them. I would prefer it be a person who has rooted their t889v.
Did you successfully get this resolved? Just got the Canadian version of T889V note2. I'd love to control my privacy a bit more, such as feeding malicious apps a fake contact list instead of letting then steal everything

If by direct root you mean exploit, there isn't any I'm aware of. However rooting with Odin and either a stock injected ROM (if you want to avoid tripping your counter) or Chainfire's AutoRoot, or CWM and flashing a superuser zip as usual works just fine.

Will CF-Autoroot work with the T889v?
I don't know if CF-Autoroot will work on 4.3, but since you're going to trip the KNOX e-fuse anyway, you might as well:
Get Odin3 3.09 (the latest available version AFAIK)
Download the latest SuperSU zip update file and put it on your SD card
Flash the latest t0tle Odin flashable image. (Other HSPA t0lte variants like t0lteatt and t0ltetmo should also work)
Or, if you've got a tar binary (like Cygwin's if you're on Windows) available on your computer, the latest Clockworkmod image, which you'll rename to recovery.img and put in a tar file with the command: tar -H ustar -cf clockworkmod.tar recovery.img
Reboot to recovery
Backup your current ROM and data, just in case.
Install the SuperSU zip.
Reboot.
The stock, unmodified ROM might throw error messages about KNOX having been tripped. I haven't touched the 4.3 bootloaders because I haven't needed them yet. I'll leave figuring how to deal with those up to you, there's a few threads on that topic.
I did root my T889v(updated WindMobile stock ROM 4.3+TMobile radio) using CF-Autoroot. Downloaded the one for N7100(the one I searched on web for T889 actually doesn't work, this N7100 one from CF-Autoroot official web site worked without problem) and rooted. Then went to market to install SuperU, then it asked whether to disable Knox, I clicked yes and root was done.
The Knox counter is tripped anyway, but I don't care.
Dont work for me ...

New to this phone and I am running 4.1.2 there is a system update a 4.3 that's already downloaded and ready to install but I wanted to make sure the update didn't install any new locks on my phone before I accept. I plan on rooting soon.
Thanks

U get knox but there are ways to still root with knox so go ahead update

Uuum hold on. If you plan to root your phone there is no point in allowing the OTA which does install KNOX. Root now and save that extra trouble.

If the poster wants to install 4.3, then accept the update, root, then flash your 4.3 rom.. This way you won't have all those reboot, lock up issues, that people keep on having.. Plus most devs do not have knox filex in their roms.. And you won't have to flash the wifi fix..
I Would Accept It.

Thank you! You're the first to shed some light on this for me. To get back to stock using the toolkit, would I need to first flash stock recovery, then Stock Firmware, then bone stock MC2? Afterwards boot in, accept the update, then re-root using the toolkit.

I'm wondering the same thing. But if we root then accept the OTA won't that enable the knox counter? So that if we now, "flash away".... won't every flash be counted?
Shouldn't we root, then install the custom roms without the knox? Or do the custom roms also include the knox counter tripping mechanism?
I would like to know how this works also.
Thanks.
I just recently came from 4.1.2 rooted running a deoxided stock rom. I didn't do the OTA update to 4.3. I used the TeamRejects Deoxidexed rooted deknoxed stock rom, the updated MK4 modem, and the WiFi fix. It took about 15-20 minutes to get everything done. I needed to download Odin too for WiFi fix. I didn't run the WiFi fix till I knew there was an issue.
Not much of complaint, but I wish there was a kernel like Perseus for TouchWix based roms. The only one I found was Devil Kernel, but for whatever reason, wasn't stable with TeamReject's ROM. I didn't really care for his custom Kernel ajdustment manager and STweaks didn't work with it at all. Ideally, I prefer a stock rooted deknoxed deoxidized bare bones rom (just phone, contacts, google play) so I have a working phone and can access Google Play so I can install the apps I prefer. The closest I found was Classic Rom but it freezes on initial rom load; Plus, I'm not a fan of the colors and the few things he choose to include.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I have been busy with work, and family things.Use billards return to full stock with counter reset. It installs everything including recovery, boot loader, firemware etc... Then set up your phone, when prompt accept the ota update.. Once done retoot, and flash what ever 4.3 rom you want.. The knox counter will still be there, but if you need a trip back to Sprint, go back to Full MC2 stock, knox counter will no longer be there.. Most 4.3 room do not include the Knox files so no worries there.

Sounds like it. The odd part, I have been able to flash Reject's stock deoxidezed deknoxed rom with no problem. I tried to flash Classic 3, but it froze on Classic's initial loading page (the one after the Samsung boot loader). I had issues another rom, but turned out it was for the international model; I wasn't paying attention where I was in the forums.
If you do what I did, you'll need to flash modem update using Odin on the PC. So, you may need to download Odin.

Depending on what you like to do, you may find 4.3 MK4 more limiting, espcially on the TouchWiz side. AOSP probably more mod friendly at this point. From what I've been able to find, there is only one custom kernal for 4.3 TouchWiz which is Devil's Kernal. It's solid, but my phone was unstable. Not sure if the phone since I may have taken out something it used when I was trying to debloat the phone. Didn't care for his Kernel Tweak manager. Neither the stock or devil's kernal supports Stweaks. Neither I could figure out how to change the boat loading animation.
I have nothing against AOSP projects. I like them. But as far as I know, none support the Spen, which I like to use with web browsers. Don't use the Samnsung Spen apps. Just wasn't that impressed with them, but I see how they can be useful. Although, SketchPro is really nice with it. I just find TouchWiz is more than sufficient for my needs and stock isn't as quirky.
Hello
What is the most STABLE, STOCK, ROOTED, LATEST rom for the Samsung Galaxy S3 (i747) AT&T model?
I just want to flash it via ODIN md5 file and just keep on using my device as normal.
It it is debloated even better.
But keeping the standard Touchwiz look.

ROM comparison threads are not allowed.
That being said - a stock ROM is generally a stock ROM so they should all be relatively comparable.
Our recommendation is that you flash something, try it out, flash something else, try it out. Eventually you'll find the ROM that is your dream ROM and you'll be good to go.
Thank you,

Pretty much new to rooting and installing custom roms to android devices. My SG3 previously was rooted and had a 4.2 Liquidsmooth jellybean rom the reason it isn't anymore is because for some reason unbeknownst to me i got stuck at the start up animation for LS so i flashed it back to stock using odin and the stock .tar from CNexus (Thanks A lot!!!!) effectively unrooting my phone and taking my rom with it. This root and om install was not done by me but by my brother. i wasnt involved in the process so i dont have any idea of how it works. From what i know he did it all using ToolKit, and i have no understanding of how to root using ToolKit, Is there an advantage to do it that way or can you root using odin? and now to the topic of roms, i don't exactly understand what they are or how you install them to my phone. If anyone could directly help me or link me to some tutorials that would be amazing (Can't for the life of me stand stock rom). i would rather have hands on help considering its my first time doing this. don't wanna brick my phone or anything. Thanks for reading!!!
Ive unrooted my phone via the super user app but I still have the Liquid Smooth ROM. From everything I read I was under the impression it would reboot completely stock
How do get it back to stock ROM!? I have been searching everywhere and nothing?
I want to get my OTA updates as I haven't used this phone since last year. I don't have access to a computer as NY charger bit the dust and I'm working the next 2 weeks in a remote location with no WiFi (I have data though)
Can any on help me, I'm slightly desperate as this Liquid Smooth ROM lags horrible, reboots if I try to use the front camera (in any app!) and is missing a lot of simple stock features like the messaging app lol,
Oy what have I done am I stuck with this or is there a way to reroot without a PC so I can flash a stock ROM?!
I'm assuming you have the i747 from AT&T.
Unrooting simply removes your administrator access to system files and apps that need root access to be fully functional, that's all.
What bootloader is on your phone? If the phone has a 4.1.2 bootloader or lower, the easiest way to get back to stock would be to flash a stock AT&T ROM from sammobile. com using Odin and I recommend living with the phone in its current state until your get access to a PC and charger.
If your bootloader is 4.3 or higher, you cannot flash a stock AT&T ROM using Odin because AT&T naver released a full ROM that can be flashed that way. You'll confirm your bootloader and follow the appropriate thread to get as close to stock as possible.
I keep mentioning the bootloader because flashing the wrong bootloader/modem combination could hard brick your phone.

I attached an image does that help as far as boot loader goes? I'm not sure how to check it. I have the I747M on virgin mobile Canada. Att ROMs have usually worked perfectly. So if my boot loader is compatible I can flash a stock ROM with Odin without rerooting?
Since you have an i747m, the safest and easiest way to restore to completely stock would be to wait until you can flash a stock 4.3 ROM via Odin. Do not attempt to flash anything older than 4.3.
Custom AT&T ROMs will work on your i747m but I don't recommend using stock AT&T ROMs on an i747m. Also, do not flash AT&T modems or bootloaders onto an i747m as this will probably brick your phone.

Okay that first part sounds simple enough for me.
But what would be a preferable stock ROM to flash if not ATT (assuming you say this because my phone is Virgin Mobile Canada) If I remember correctly I had flashed a ATT stock ROM a long time ago and ended up with no service and security issues that I eventually fixed but were a pain in the arse to figure out. I don't know if I've ever come across a Virgin Mobile ROM. I believe they are a sub company of Bell btw.
Go to sammobile.com and flash any mk5 firmware you want for the i747m. You can choose from Rogers, Bell, and Telus.
I have cross-flashed a Rogers ROM onto a Telus Phone and a Telus ROM onto a Bell phone.
Based on my own experience, all i747m ROMs for Canadian carriers appear to be the same except for carrier customisations.

Okay! Perfect this is a lot more straight forward than I anticipated, thank you SO much!!
When flashing the ROM with Odin, uncheck everything except f.reset time. When the flash is complete, you will see the word "reset" in the status window. When you see reset, remove the USB cable, remove the battery, replace the battery, boot into recovery, and wipe cache, data, Dalvik, and reboot.
