Cm9 alternate dialer - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a file a can flash onto my epic 4g cm9 to install a different and easier looking dialer? I get a lot of new numbers (sometime 10 a night) and when I hand my phone to girls to enter in their number they ofter have trouble. When they need to backspace its hard to recognize the delete arrow button. When they enter in 10 digits it only shows the last 7 and not the area code so this briefly confuses them. I just want a simple dialer that I can hand a girl my phone to and she won't get confused entering in her number.

Check on the playstore for cm9 themes, many of them change the dialer looks... may help out...

[Q] CM6 Phone app vs Stock Phone app

I am rooted and using CM6. If I remember correctly, in the stock Phone app you could start hitting the numbers and while you are typing on the top part, it would start scrolling names from your contact that may be a potential fit for what you have typed. The phone app with CM6 doesn't do this. Is there a way to use the stock phone app with cm6?
No, this function isn't supported with the AOSP dialer. There are probably some dialers on the Android Market that have this feature (though I'm not sure). To my knowledge, there is no way to mod the AOSP dialer to do this.

Hitting the search key allows for this, I never knew it but works quite well. Dialer one might help you too.
As far as typing numbers ... not sure. But names, thus numbers, are shown ...
Dialer one is often recommended though.

I stand corrected. That's not quite what the Sense dialer does, but it does the trick. Consider yourself thanked when I get to a computer.

Thx, I didn't know the search button did the name search in contacts.
I downloaded Dialer One and its just about there. It does do the name typing but it doesn't search if I type a number i.e. if I have a contact Elizabeth with phone 517-555-1212.. if I start by hitting "3" Elizabeth comes up but if I start by hitting "5" it doesn't.
But Dialer One seems pretty neat.. gonna try using it..
thank you

[ROM]3.25.2011 Continuum Clean (In Progress)

Ok, so normally I hate placeholders, but I'd like to give you guys an update of where I am at. Once I am finished tweaking, I will release. The base rom is done, now the modding and tweaking needs to happen.
So far:
--------------
Deodexed, Debloated, Debinged, and mostly, detouchwizzed. Debinged...even in the framework. I think* all Bing traces are gone now.
Visual voice mail gone, voice mail button in dialer opens Google Voice.
Verizon Wireless carrier banner replaced with something....better.
MMS app will not longer do multi-part messages, but instead convert to MMS automatically once the 160 character mark is hit.
GPS tweaked.
Wow in one day of having the phone you have a rom halfway competed
Sent from my Rooted Space Time Continuum w/h a 2600mAh battery

Wow, I can't wait for this even though we have had bad experiences with place holders, I know this isn't the case lol..
I don't know how many times I'm going to say thank you, but here is another thanks!
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA Premium App
along the lines of changes to the voicemail button.....it would be awesome if the ticker's voicemail icon could correspond to Google Voice...but I am sure that is a lot more involved than changing the button's link in the Dialer.
a similar desire exists for the sms icon to correspond to Handcent
I used titanium backup to remove the stock messaging app and that killed the ticker's SMS icon functionality....I saved the stock app to reinstall but that introduces a different problem....the ticker icon doesn't go away reliably after having read the text in Handcent.
maybe this thread wasn't intended for our wish list items.....if that is the case, I apologize.
thanks for your help to our little Continuum family!
thanks for the help here adryn! my wife has the continuum, and i got hers to load red recovery, and the other modded rom.
question on this rom you are building..will it have the bstats and fxpms scripts? are the ones for fascinate compatable with contunuum?
thanks...

curious (warning - n00b question) - would it be possible to make the GV VM connection optional for those of us who don't use GV?
Also, what do you mean by GPS tweaked? The only thing i've noticed about mine is when i'm out geocaching with c:geo or using google maps to navigate while walking, sometimes the compass seems to be off by 180 degrees. when driving, google nav seems fine - likely since it can figure out direction based on previous locations in the same way it figures speed, but i don't walk fast enough for it to figure out direction - especially when geocaching since i'm always stopping to look for the cache.
all told - that's pretty impressive that you knocked out so much stuff in the short time you have had the phone! Thanks for your help with this device!
Any chance you have cracked open the ticker, or at least made it more useful to people who don't use the stock apps (that is... EVERYONE)?
One suggestion i saw somewhere (probably here) really interested me - put the notification area in the ticker screen and make it big enough to fill it, so you dont' have to try and hook into their custom ticker app - just use the existing system one, only relocated/resized. that way all system notifications (no matter what app they're from) will be visible in the ticker, all the time, as well as the time of day, and apps won't have to be custom-written to take advantage of the ticker; they'd just WORK.
I just can't wait till it is out I am looking forward to it

shoot - as long as it doesn't affect anything else, i'd take that over the annoying, noisy crap vzw put on there. is the shutdown screen also black/silent?
I don't have the phone right here handy atm but, I've already downloaded the Rom and alt browser. looking forward to flashing it to my boy's phone! I know he'll be happy too. One thing I love about these Android phones is how they give us the ability to have that "new phone" feeling any time we like, thanks to their rich development community. This is one thing the Continuum crowd has missed out on until now.

suggestions for dialer issues

ok I just moved from a HTC sensation to the S III, I am really disliking the dialer. Now I am trying out GO DailerEx and it seems pretty good...BUT, when I am in a call it goes back to the samsung dialer until i end the call and hit the back button. Anyone know of a goo0d dailer that completely replaces the samsung junky one? Or know how to replace with Go SMS fully?
I think they all must do that. Same thing happens to me on exDialer
I think this is built into ICS+. I just upgraded from an OG Evo 4G and IIRC GoDialer was completely skinnable, it let me choose the answer/hangup button style, position, etc. Maybe we must wait for an update?
Non sequitur: Is it just me or does XDA have some of the most difficult image verifcations on the internet? I have to click refresh like fifteen times to get something that even resembles words.
The dialers are just that, dialers. They dial the number then let the built-in phone application handle the phone call. You would have to replace the system phone app completely.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
Okay... Is that possible? Can they go dialer be cooked in to a rom and loose the Samsung crap completely or is there another all in one dialer/app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
You know, I did set GoContacts, GoSMS, and the other Go apps as system apps using Titanium Backup. That was on Gingerbread though, so I make no guarantees. I haven't done it on ICS because there's been no issues with the Go apps dismissing notifications. The only way to remove them was the system remove dialog then a reboot after that.
I don't think setting them as system apps will do what you want. The best bet is to try to replace the samsung dialer with an AOSP one, but I'm not certain how you would do that.
bump
Dialers on AOKP do the same. So no escape.
Just wonder why do you hate Samsung dialer? It's better than stock Android or AOKP.

surely it depends if the browser is a system app or not?
If it is a system app chances are it has permissions to dial out, if not, it won't
EDIT:
If you are on an ICS rom please try this from whatever browsers you have installed and let me know which browser, if its a system or data app and what happens.

Story from Android Central (pulled from my Twitter feed)
http://t.co/JpsZ5HZW
This is bad news folks... and if the factory reset one is done with an unsafe & unlocked recovery and kernel could mean triggering the bug = Partial or Full brick.
Samsung Galaxy Ace
Just tested this on a Galaxy Ace running CM7, the dialer was launched but the code did not work, bad news indeed for most (every?) samsung phone it seems
So apparently it's not just Samsung, and other browsers accept stock are fine? http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...eset-on-many-samsung-phones-running-touchwiz/

The AC article is saying it depends on the dialer. Seriously, how could you allow a factory reset via dialer and then allow it to be triggered via browser? That's a major bug and it needs to be squashed.
AC updated their article and is now hearing that JB builds for S3 may have this patched already. Also got a confirmation via Twitter from @SamsungSupport that this has been sent to the devs.
Well even the iPhone is mildly vulnerable as loading the proof page triggers a popup to call the number (pressing call does nothing though), and from the original thread having a different dialer still triggers the code (someone tried with GO Dialer iirc)
the feature in the browser is due to being able to tap a phone number and call someone. having dialer code to factory reset is stupid since its in the settings and recovery.
in other news you can find out more info at www.shabbypenguin.com/wont/wipe/your/phone.html
its safe, i promise
I just installed a second dialer, with none of them set as default so now i am prompted if a website puts that code into the frame. If you get prompted to launch dialer while visiting any site, of course you would just hit the back button. Temporary fix.
One can visit this site to test if their phone's dialer is vulnerable, I am running FI03 stock and surely enough it shows my IMEI code.
http://dylanreeve.com/phone.php <- just a site to test if you are vulnerable.
It showed mine and I'm on el29 GB
with stock browser
The code that's supposed to work on the S3 (*2676*3855#) doesn't work on the epic touch.
The factory reset dialercode for the epic/epic touch is *#767*3855#

Same on stock FI03, mainly because that specific code in those links don't necessarily pertain to our model but probably like an international version or the GS3

^^ This.
The dialer code for the e4gt is *#767*3855#
While the GS3 and Internation is *2767*3855#
So the sites that have to malicious frame in it for the other sgs2 models and s3 won't work on the epic touch.
Doesnt mean someone wont be imclusive and target muliple models...
Better safe than sorry
Tappin' Typin'
One could always target our device by using the same code that opens the dialer for the other devices but with our dialer code instead.
While it is unlikely, it is possible. Just be careful about what sites you are visiting. If it is something you are not familiar with, or it's not posted by a trusted source, don't click the link.

You'd think it would ask for something like the msl before doing a reset, for safety reasons, but I guess not.

Different dialer

Hi all,
Is there an alternative to the stock dialer for the SIII? Couple of things I don't like about the stock one if anyone knows any fixes for it that I'm not aware of.
When using the keypad to enter the name or number of the person you want to call, my old phone's dialer would suggest people or numbers based on recent or frequent calls so I can punch in a few letters or numbers and who I want to call would normally be at the top of the list and i can just click the name and it would call. The SIII doesn't seem to do that.
Also, this dialer seems pretty sluggish sometimes when working with dialer screens (dialing the chosen number, opening pull down menu, going between tabs, etc.).
Thanks,
Ho'okani

Yea man you type the first number(letter) it pulls a name and next to that name it shows an arrow pointing down with the list of names for that letter. Works great
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Thanks. Knew about the arrow thing but just looking for something more intuitive. When you open up the list of names there doesn't seem to be any logical order to it and the ones at the top are usually names I rarely call. You would think the most used or recently called names would be at the top. Plus my phone seems sluggish when trying to open that list of names.
Thanks,
Ho'okani

Any AOSP rom for that matter, the dialer on AOSP roms are really good. But if you want to stay on the default rom, I'd +1 exdialer for its customization options and speed. I think there are modified stock roms with the AOSP dialer, but I'm not too sure/can't find them at the moment.
