Hi all,
Is there an alternative to the stock dialer for the SIII? Couple of things I don't like about the stock one if anyone knows any fixes for it that I'm not aware of.
When using the keypad to enter the name or number of the person you want to call, my old phone's dialer would suggest people or numbers based on recent or frequent calls so I can punch in a few letters or numbers and who I want to call would normally be at the top of the list and i can just click the name and it would call. The SIII doesn't seem to do that.
Also, this dialer seems pretty sluggish sometimes when working with dialer screens (dialing the chosen number, opening pull down menu, going between tabs, etc.).
Thanks,
Ho'okani

Yea man you type the first number(letter) it pulls a name and next to that name it shows an arrow pointing down with the list of names for that letter. Works great

Thanks. Knew about the arrow thing but just looking for something more intuitive. When you open up the list of names there doesn't seem to be any logical order to it and the ones at the top are usually names I rarely call. You would think the most used or recently called names would be at the top. Plus my phone seems sluggish when trying to open that list of names.
Thanks,

App store search for dialer will answer your questions.

My favorite is exDialer paired with exDialer ICS Theme. Both free ON Google Play.
Thanks. Trying out exDialer and seems to be pretty good so far.

Any AOSP rom for that matter, the dialer on AOSP roms are really good. But if you want to stay on the default rom, I'd +1 exdialer for its customization options and speed. I think there are modified stock roms with the AOSP dialer, but I'm not too sure/can't find them at the moment.

I am rooted and using CM6. If I remember correctly, in the stock Phone app you could start hitting the numbers and while you are typing on the top part, it would start scrolling names from your contact that may be a potential fit for what you have typed. The phone app with CM6 doesn't do this. Is there a way to use the stock phone app with cm6?
No, this function isn't supported with the AOSP dialer. There are probably some dialers on the Android Market that have this feature (though I'm not sure). To my knowledge, there is no way to mod the AOSP dialer to do this.

Hitting the search key allows for this, I never knew it but works quite well. Dialer one might help you too.
As far as typing numbers ... not sure. But names, thus numbers, are shown ...
Dialer one is often recommended though.

I stand corrected. That's not quite what the Sense dialer does, but it does the trick. Consider yourself thanked when I get to a computer.

Thx, I didn't know the search button did the name search in contacts.
I downloaded Dialer One and its just about there. It does do the name typing but it doesn't search if I type a number i.e. if I have a contact Elizabeth with phone 517-555-1212.. if I start by hitting "3" Elizabeth comes up but if I start by hitting "5" it doesn't.
But Dialer One seems pretty neat.. gonna try using it..
thank you

Problem solved.
Hey All,
I came from the miui rom on my DHD and one thing i loved about it i am missing in android 4.0.
when going to the dialer, and typing a number, it also did name searches.
Is this possible in 4.0 or did they fail by not building this simple feature?
example: dialing 2539 would bring up Alex from my contacts.
i dont wanne go in my contacts, then search, then call.
just type a few numbers to have it filter my contacts and immediately dial.
Thanks.
I miss this too... I know taht on older androids you can use Go dialer&Go contacts to get this functionality but don't know if work on ICS also I would like use stock dialer design but with this "T9" functionality...
unfortunately no..
this has been the behavior of the stock dialers in every AOSP rom.. very annoying!
Yeah, miss it too, very annoying! Was so much quicker before, having to do it this new way just feels slow and clunky.
Can you not search by contact numbers using the google search bar at the top? Im waiting for a replacement phone so I cant check but I thought they added that feature in ICS.
Mark.
I am currently using Dialer One purely for the T9 search feature, looks like CM9 will have it on board though: http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#change,10843
looks good

ok I just moved from a HTC sensation to the S III, I am really disliking the dialer. Now I am trying out GO DailerEx and it seems pretty good...BUT, when I am in a call it goes back to the samsung dialer until i end the call and hit the back button. Anyone know of a goo0d dailer that completely replaces the samsung junky one? Or know how to replace with Go SMS fully?
I think they all must do that. Same thing happens to me on exDialer
I think this is built into ICS+. I just upgraded from an OG Evo 4G and IIRC GoDialer was completely skinnable, it let me choose the answer/hangup button style, position, etc. Maybe we must wait for an update?
Non sequitur: Is it just me or does XDA have some of the most difficult image verifcations on the internet? I have to click refresh like fifteen times to get something that even resembles words.
The dialers are just that, dialers. They dial the number then let the built-in phone application handle the phone call. You would have to replace the system phone app completely.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
Okay... Is that possible? Can they go dialer be cooked in to a rom and loose the Samsung crap completely or is there another all in one dialer/app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
You know, I did set GoContacts, GoSMS, and the other Go apps as system apps using Titanium Backup. That was on Gingerbread though, so I make no guarantees. I haven't done it on ICS because there's been no issues with the Go apps dismissing notifications. The only way to remove them was the system remove dialog then a reboot after that.
I don't think setting them as system apps will do what you want. The best bet is to try to replace the samsung dialer with an AOSP one, but I'm not certain how you would do that.
bump
Dialers on AOKP do the same. So no escape.
Just wonder why do you hate Samsung dialer? It's better than stock Android or AOKP.
Hey guys, I hope you can help me out.
I just got the Galaxy Nexus and upgraded to the stock 4.2. I am very happy with it but there is one small snag.
I previously had the HTC hero and it had an option to intuitively search your contacts when you are typing stuff in the dialing pad. I don't see this in the vanilla Jellybean. It's really strange as this seems to me like a must-have function and I can't think why they would have omitted it.
I searched all the options over and over and found nothing. A friend of mine has a custom jelly and it has it.
Please tell me if I am doing something wrong or if this is by design for the vanilla version.
Thanks in advance!
yes, vanilla JB doesn't have that unfortunately. but, if you are rooted you could try replacing the stock dialer with the one with T9 capabilities - you could find it floating around the board, though i haven't tried yet,
or you could use custom ROM, that's what i did.
Download an app from play store.
I personally like DW contacts.
Swype'ed on my CM10 Galaxy Nexus
You can also use exdialer from play store. Great dialer with themes. No root required.

By Design who needs T9 when you have Google Now? Just swipe up from Navbar and say call Contact X. Just about every custom rom features a T9 dialer so that is worth consideration.

I need it because I'm bulgarian and naturally my contacts all have names that Google Now has a pretty hard time recognizing when said aloud.
I'm thinking about a custom rom but for now I'll go with the dialers suggested in previous posts.
I still think that this option is something that any dialer should have and find it pretty puzzling that they should omit it in the stock one. My guess would be patent issues.
Anyways, thanks to all of you for your suggestions, you've been extremely helpful!
Cheers,
I'm on Rogers. Running stock. I noticed something about caller ID on my previous Note with different ROMs: Some ROMs, like CM, will show the caller's name and number, but other ROMs, such as the stock one I'm running now, only show the number (it will show the name if the person is in my contacts).
I'd like to have PROPER caller ID (i.e. name + number) with this here stock ROM. Can anyone tell me why it's a go on some ROMs and not on others?
So I guess the only difference is that CM will display the number under the contact name, while TW ROMs only display the name (or just the number if no name is stored for that specific number) of the person calling.
Personally I don't care who so and so's number is, because their number is already stored on my phone.
I can't see this ever being changed, seeing as this wouldn't be a simple "add on".
Sent from my SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
No, it's more like a CM knows the name of a non-contact, whereas TW doesn't. For example, let's say Sears calls me about my underpants catelogue order. Sears isn't in my contacts. TW caller ID will show "800-669-6969", and CM will show "Sears 800-669-6969".
Ah yes I know what you mean now. For my carrier thats a feature called caller id lookup. I think the carrier searches the 411 and sends the info to the phone.
Very good question now that I understand. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with APN settings or possibly TW ROMs don't have that feature available. I don't have that on my note 2 either, yet had that with my old iPhone.
Sent from my SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Yes, I thought perhaps it was a carrier feature, but it's puzzling why it works with some ROMs and not others,.

Unless the specific rom looks for the 411 using data while the call is coming through. Wish TW ROMs had it, cause I'm not going to switch and lose out on all the features.
