suggestions for dialer issues - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

ok I just moved from a HTC sensation to the S III, I am really disliking the dialer. Now I am trying out GO DailerEx and it seems pretty good...BUT, when I am in a call it goes back to the samsung dialer until i end the call and hit the back button. Anyone know of a goo0d dailer that completely replaces the samsung junky one? Or know how to replace with Go SMS fully?

I think they all must do that. Same thing happens to me on exDialer

I think this is built into ICS+. I just upgraded from an OG Evo 4G and IIRC GoDialer was completely skinnable, it let me choose the answer/hangup button style, position, etc. Maybe we must wait for an update?
Non sequitur: Is it just me or does XDA have some of the most difficult image verifcations on the internet? I have to click refresh like fifteen times to get something that even resembles words.

The dialers are just that, dialers. They dial the number then let the built-in phone application handle the phone call. You would have to replace the system phone app completely.

Okay... Is that possible? Can they go dialer be cooked in to a rom and loose the Samsung crap completely or is there another all in one dialer/app?

You know, I did set GoContacts, GoSMS, and the other Go apps as system apps using Titanium Backup. That was on Gingerbread though, so I make no guarantees. I haven't done it on ICS because there's been no issues with the Go apps dismissing notifications. The only way to remove them was the system remove dialog then a reboot after that.

I don't think setting them as system apps will do what you want. The best bet is to try to replace the samsung dialer with an AOSP one, but I'm not certain how you would do that.

bump

Dialers on AOKP do the same. So no escape.
Just wonder why do you hate Samsung dialer? It's better than stock Android or AOKP.

Porting phone.apk from stock to cyanogen

So right now I'm in dsixda's rom kitchen, trying to pull a few stock apps(phone, dialer, contacts, messaging) from a rooted stock rom(cr 2.13 OTA) to the nightly CM7. It's giving me process.com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly at boot and won't let me past. So I know that the OTA rom is froyo and CM is gingerbread, I'm assuming thats my problem. so that being said, first am I right? What do I need to do to make this work? and where can I get a stock gingerbread rom? can I simply drag and drop phone.apk, dialer.apk, etc. or is there more to it?

I don't think that will work. Espresso roms are sense, cm roms are not, they have different frameworks and such. First off, I'm PRETTY sure phone.apk is just the backend to sms/dialer/radio/etc., so you can leave that alone. Why do you want to move those apps over to cm7? Theming? Messaging and contacts I KNOW won't work because they require the tmobile framework resources that cm roms don't have, same with the dialer. You won't be able to move messaging either, since it has different coding from froyo to gingerbread. Contacts and dialer you MIGHT be able to move over if you ALSO move over the com.htc.resources.apk from /system/framework to the same location on the cm rom. You also might have to move the com.tmobile.framework.apk or something like that from /system/app to the same location on cm7 as well.
That may or may not work, it'll more likely just cause force closes everywhere since htc apps are very dependent on other apps and proprietary framework resources that stock android doesn't have.
I don't understand why you would want any of that. To each his own, but I think cyanogen has made all of that stuff better and simpler. The only thing he needs to add is the ability to end the call from the notification bar. I thought sense had a good idea there

I'm not knocking CM I do like it, it's just still buggy. For example in his contacts when entering a new a number with the keyboard the numbers are haywire and dont work, so you have to use the touchscreen. The main thing with the dialer is I miss the T9 speeddial, and messaging is a bit buggy as well, plus I like the old mms.apk ui better. For now I found out about dialer 1 on the market and will use that, but hopefully when it's all said and done things will be better on CM. Can anyone suggest a good messaging app from the market? contacts too maybe?

I use GoSMS. It's free, and you can theme it and such.
Alright. and almost forgot, the stock music player... any way of porting that? I really like the original widget better, and I miss controlling it from the lock screen. I want the old calendar back as well. thoughts?
i missed the dial by name from the SenseUI - this app is a GREAT replacement, you swipe from side to side to get to recent/favs/dial, and it's free: https://market.android.com/details?id=kz.mek.DialerOne

this is available in the later CM7 nightlies (30+) - you can hold the volume buttons to do prev/next, and you can even have the controls on the lock screen...

This is a replacement contacts called Phonebook 2.0. It's pretty cool.
Also, pretty much any of the widgets in sense are sense only ;p
Thanks guys. Yep figured out about the music player, thats good. Already using dialer one, I like it better actually. Now I'm missing the calendar. I really miss being able to see when stuff is coming up on the old widget. Any body got anything on that?

[Q] Any way to disable smileys in SMS?

Graphical emoticons are driving me crazy, I usually disable them on all my devices and softwares. I am shocked that can't be done in the stock SMS app
Any way to disable them? Like deleting them from the respective APK?
Not only are they ugly, but for example "*" is translated into something... I don't even know what....
Yes, I hate them so much I'm even willing to go for another SMS app just because of this...
Sounds like your gonna need root.
sent from a Android device
I'm always on!
Yes, I do have root, I'm running Leedroid ROM, but the stock SMS app just has no way to disable those annoying ogre-like somethings...
Would be nice if HTC adds smileys pack to HTC hub... And at this moment I'm not wish to root my device, because too much software issue on it and stock roms comes faster than any custom

I hate the new dialer

Absolutely hate it. I have a GS3 as well and love the dialer. Why did they have to remove the contacts and put those big picture squares for the favorites? I feel like one of those home phones made for kids with big buttons that you put a picture of Grammy, a fireman and a police man so that the kid who can't read can dial the phone! Help, I have fallen and I can't get up!
I have tried the 3rd party apps and don't really care for them.
I would love to change to either the GS3 dialer, or the old E4GT GB dialer.
I am not currently rooted.
Can I just swap APKs?
How are you going to swap apks without root? Most system apks are built for the for that type phone (touchwiz, sense, etc...), but it is possible if you know what you are doing.

I can root, and it was prior to the ICS update. I had to return it to stock for the update.
I simply wanted to state that I am not rooted ATM.
I have given this phone to my wife, so I want to keep it as simple as possible.

Oh ok. Tjought ypu wanted to keep stock and swap dialers. The dialer from frankenateins ego may do you some good. It has been re-engineered to work just fine with tw.

Is there any way to port some of these features to TW

I am recently having fun of dual booting on Siyah kernel.
On Cyanogen , the dialer is great & simple.
Also contacts work great than present in Samsung.
The full screen caller image , shortcuts of apps or widgets get delete that is removed from home screen just by flicker.
I know that some of these features or all given by Google itself in Jelly bean.
Can we port them to touch wiz ?
Please , don't tell me an substitute app for dialer , etc because apps don't work like system app works
Thanks in advance guys.
Sorry , if I have posted in wrong section

Doubt that
I really doubt anything could be done with stock Dialer. Balagamer mod it for 240 dpi but just that.
Sorry to say that, because is think it is the only glitch in our device.
Anyway and as I have suffered the same frustration (now forgotten) I dare to recomend you to give a try to exDialer. Since I use it my S3 it finally become what a 600 € phone should be.
You will get quick dialer with real T9 and a fast contact app (with nearly 1500 contacts open inmediately), keeping stock "incoming" call and "in call" screens (nice idea for compatibility with TW actions). And you will be able forget those stupid water leak sounds that hide the proper dialing key codes.
It is a very light app and don't cause any problem. It is free, skinable, and you don't loose anything triying.

Thanks for the recommendation! I just tried it and it is an awesome app. Where the stock dialer used to be slow, taking a few seconds before loading, this one shows up instantly. The contacts list is also so much cleaner than stock.
You are welcome.
Happy to know you try my recomendation and find it usefull.

Different dialer

Hi all,
Is there an alternative to the stock dialer for the SIII? Couple of things I don't like about the stock one if anyone knows any fixes for it that I'm not aware of.
When using the keypad to enter the name or number of the person you want to call, my old phone's dialer would suggest people or numbers based on recent or frequent calls so I can punch in a few letters or numbers and who I want to call would normally be at the top of the list and i can just click the name and it would call. The SIII doesn't seem to do that.
Also, this dialer seems pretty sluggish sometimes when working with dialer screens (dialing the chosen number, opening pull down menu, going between tabs, etc.).
Thanks,
Ho'okani

Yea man you type the first number(letter) it pulls a name and next to that name it shows an arrow pointing down with the list of names for that letter. Works great
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Thanks. Knew about the arrow thing but just looking for something more intuitive. When you open up the list of names there doesn't seem to be any logical order to it and the ones at the top are usually names I rarely call. You would think the most used or recently called names would be at the top. Plus my phone seems sluggish when trying to open that list of names.
Thanks,
Ho'okani

Thanks. Trying out exDialer and seems to be pretty good so far.

Any AOSP rom for that matter, the dialer on AOSP roms are really good. But if you want to stay on the default rom, I'd +1 exdialer for its customization options and speed. I think there are modified stock roms with the AOSP dialer, but I'm not too sure/can't find them at the moment.
