[Q] Which root method?

I had my WF S S-OFF today and now I am looking forward for rooting it. But I am a bit confused about something: I read a tut about rooting WF S 2.3.3 Gingerbread with Gingerbreak apk and I also found this rooting tut on this site : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195275
I didn't tried before being sure to not mess up with my device. So does both methods work or which one is preferred?

Run gingerbreak, device will restart. You are then rooted.

so you say I don't have to install custom recovery and other stuff to root it ? Just gingerbreak will be okay?

Yes unless you want to have custom roms, then you will need to install a custom recovery which can be found in the development section.

Do I have a chance to restore back the original recovery in case of visiting service if phone gets messed up?
I am wondering if it's possible to use gingerbreak, then install nandroid get everything backed up (not sure if it backups the original recovery in the phone) then un apply gingerbreak and then install custom recovery.
So this way I can restore the backup with original rom and original recovery. Is something like that possible?

Is it a good idea / practice to install Clockword Rom Manager as it will replace the recovery menu that I have to install for rooting the device? I am not planning to checkout roms for now, but was just wondering

Nandroid backup is in the custom recovery. You can remove everything if you just install a RUU. Also you cannot backup the original recovery as you need a custom recovery to backup your ROM.

So best practice is using tut on xda, then install Clockword Rom Manager to install nandroid also and take full backup and then play with the phone?

Yeah, but make sure you install the CWM from the development here or else it won't work. It's very simple to install it. As your phone is S-off you can install the recovery and then backup the original unrooted rom and keep that as a backup.

3-) Then with using nandroid (I think it's included with CWM? I read something like that on a site) I will take backup of my whole phone (I still wonder how it will backup unrooted version of rom eventho it's rooted)
4-) Remove unnecessary branded stuff (I don't know how to do that, any app for that?)
5-) Then just mess with the phone.
So my last questions is : When I install RUU, it will get back to stock recovery, and when i install the unrooted backup it will be like a legal phone right ? (Of course i will turn S-OFF back)

You got it all right, except if you have never updated the phone, as there was an update which blocked gingerbreak you don't need to do most of it.
Also when you flash the RUU it will all go stock. S-off will remain as it can't be turned on. Not to my knowledge anyway.

I think I wont use gingerbreak method, I checked for updates when I bought it and it said no updates. So probably that fix is already included in the WF S :/
I didn't managed to find RUU for WF S somehow but i guess for now I don't need it.
Today the guy at service shop (for breaking S-OFF) said that there is way for user to set S-OFF back, but he said he doesn't know the exact way. I thought hard reset will fix it

No problem, also you could just run gingerbreak first just to see if it does work without following the other steps.

Basic root-nothing else- and a few questions

So there seem to be quite a few tools and methods out there with which you can root your phone, but what if I really only want to root it and nothing else; my only goal is to use apps that require root access.
I've got Android 4.1.1, but I suppose it shouldn't matter that much. Will I be able to update to a newer version with root access though?

What will I need to back up and how do I transfer my settings and contacts? I don't care much for lost apps since I don't have many.

Unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery. After that you make a nandroid backup and then install the superuser root script to give root acces in the rom.
Flash back the stock recovery and you are able to receive and install official ota's.

Is this all possible with this tool?
Now I don't want to act dumb or seem inept, but could you or someone else give me a more detailed description, maybe with a link or two?

You can use an app called carbon to make a backup. You need a custom recovery to install the super user script. A stock one is not capable if doing that. And you don't root a phone. Only its software !

With hassoons tool, how do I flash the stock ROM back on it? I can see no option in his thread...

The stock nandroid backup needs to be installed via the custom recovery. Not with hassons tool kit. You can in that case only flash back the stock boot.img from the stock backup.

EDIT: Selected Power down on the phone because I was getting impatient and paranoid and then disconnected the phone. Everything seems fine so far. I closed the console and the message "Get Token ID.." popped up and then the console reopened, apparently searching for the phone... -_-
Oh well, maybe next time. Right now I want to take a break/try something else.
Can someone tell me why Windows always trys to install new drivers even when they already are installed? Happened when I used the programm- updating drivers blabla...

Just a question:
Can I definitely receive official android/sense/hwatever ota updates but still keep the root access?
What i've gathered so far is that I need to use hassoons tool and how to guide,but only the first post.
After that I will have a rooted stock ROM with ClockworkMod recovery, right?
Then I should do a nandroid backup WITH CWM (how is this done exactly? hold volume down +power button, then recovery?)
What will be backed up with the nandroid backup? How big will this be roughly and can I/should I put it on PC to free up some space?
Regardless from this backup, I only need the recovery.img, which in my case will be MY personal backed up STOCK recovery.img,is that correct?
How do I flash my stock recovery?

Once I have the stock recovery again, will my phone still have root access? Is everything from then on -stock- except for root access?

Question about rooting and installing a custom rom

So I'm going to be following this persons guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyJq_Ta8Y9Y&list=WL&index=8 to root (I wanna make sure I don't brick it).
Is there a way to root my phone, use titanium backup and then unlock bootloader and stuff without losing my data?

Question is, does the kernel auto install or do I need to click the github, download as ZIP and flash it ?
Kind of don't want to brick my phone as things have sort of changed.
Have rooted 3 phones before but now things have changed. The kernels auto installed for me, now I don't know.

My phone's lost rooting.

This winter I had decided to install the GCam on my Mi A2 lite, so I followed a guide (I'm not able to mod any phone) I managed to install the cam. To install that I obv needed to root my phone and indeed on Root Checker that was rooted. Some months later, the phone was automaticatly updated and after that I don't know how that lost his rooting and the possibilty to use Gcam (and other apps). I didn't want to do all the process again so I let that go.
Now I'd like to install the Pixel Experience ROM on my Xiaomi tho, but I read that I need to have root permission and the bootloader unlocked. My bootloader is already uncloked, because in developer's option, under "Unlock OEM" is written. "the bootloader's already unlocked."), but I have no root permission. I don't know what to do, because as I said I'm totally ignorant.
Can I install a custom recovery without root permission? How can I install the Pixel Rom? I need to root again my phone?

You need for sure an unlocked bootloader but regarding root although you don´t need it to flash a custom recovery nor a custom rom probably is better that you have it so you might need to do other things like install mods that need root.
Just flashing the Magisk you´ll recover the lost root status again but if you don´t have recovery now just boot on it through fastboot and then flash it over your actual rom or if you want the Pixel rom just follow the tutorial posted in the thread.

Do I need a TWRP Recovery tho? Because I read on some guides that's a requisite to instal Pixel Rom.
And please, can you link me the tutorial you mean? Because I can't find out that.

Yes, you need a custom recovery like TWRP and regarding tutorial there is a how-to-install method on every custom rom and also in the thread of a Pixel rom https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/development/rom-pixel-experience-t3911489 they´re just some few steps

To be honest I can't find where's the tutorial into that thread :crying:
Anyway I've just thought that maybe I've already have a TWRP. I did a lot of operations when I installed the GCam, so maybe I also did that. Is there a way to find out if I already have it?

Oh sorry since I don´t use PE rom nevermind there is not a tutorial there but you will find one here https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi...0-ressurection-remix-os-xiaomi-mi-a2-t3954197 it´s the same process (more or less) for any custom rom.
If you are on a custom rom just booting using advanced power reboot you can go to recovery to see if it still stays there, also you can go manually using key combination (vol up + pwr from a device off) and you have too adb reboot recovery command to boot on it.

Root magisk questions

Hey guys.
I'm reading the forum over and over, reading guides but still can't quite understand few things about magisk root.
1) Is it necessary to use TWRP for root using magisk? I found a guide to patch stock rom boot.img and then flash custom rom without TWRP. This way encryption also works (I read it doesn't if you use TWRP).
What is the purpose to use TWRP at all? What are the pros and cons of each method.
2) How is OTA update handled for Samsung with magisk? Do I have to revert back to stock rom using odin each time a new update appears?
Or I can do download OTA update, apply it, then without reboot, I just reinstall magisk from my phone and everything will work?
3) Can you make signed custom rom for samsung so you can lock bootloader after root, just like people do it for one plus on this forum?
Or it is not possible with samsung?

Hello,
First off I would just let you know that typically questions like this go in the Q&A section.. This is S20/S20+/S20U Snapdragon Development thread which is usually reserved for people who develop things such as roms, twrp, mods etc. etc. so be sure to ready the rules and other stickied information when considering to post just to be sure you post in the right section.
So next thing I want to say is that in order to use TWRP or root or anything custom really on a usa Snapdragon model (U/U1/W Models) you have to use paid service to unlock the bootloader IF your device is eligible to be unlocked which means you haven't updated to the latest OS, if it is, then you are out of luck for now until new method is developed using new security.
If you are unlocked already, can unlock or just want to know I will try and answer your questions now.
1) TWRP is not necessary. Neither is patching the full ROM. All you need to do (if you don't want to use TWRP) is take the boot.img from the stock firmware, patch it using Magisk app and then flash it in ODIN. Device will wipe most likely if encryption and vbmeta etc. isn't disabled already. I do not know if "encryption" works while just rooted using Magisk patched boot.img or not as I usually disable all that stuff. My guess is that in some form it would be encrypted, just not sure if it's the same thing you are referring to or not.
2) If you are on an unlocked bootloader and complete stock i.e. no root or anything just clean full stock then you should get OTA updates. If you use anything "custom" i.e. Magisk patched boot.img or TWRP installed or vbmeta disabled etc. etc. then OTA updates will NOT work. And no, you don't have to revert to stock in ODIN each time there is a firmware update. It really depends on the update but you can typically use the odin tar with home csc and it should update without wiping but at the same time you would lose root or need to re-patch the new boot.img etc. etc. but wouldn't necessarily have to flash stock first then start over. There's also "safe" updates available some posted by jrkruse in development sections. If you had a usa unlocked device that was unlocked using paid service then you do NOT want to take OTA's because Samsung has changed the way tokens are verified when device boots up so new OS can't read them and most devices have incremented the bootloader so if you did take an OTA you likely would lost your unlock and no way to downgrade.
3) No. In order to do that you would need Samsung's private keys since there is no way to load your own custom key to use.. you can't just sign it with any key.. Also, if you relock your bootloader on a USA model that was unlocked using paid service then you will not be able to unlock again.. either way, it's not possible to use a custom signed firmware then relock the bootloader and have it boot.. not on Samsung anyway..
