[Q] Doubts in rooting

So far I've had only Samsung phones, which were rooted by flashing a zip file through the built-in recovery (containing signed SuperSU).
Now I have a 2013 Nexus 7 and I'm looking at the rooting guides and I see bootloader unlocking, flashing custom recoveries and a lot of other things which personally confuse the hell out of me as to why are they needed.
So I wanted to ask if there is a way to just flash a zip file with the SuperSU (and buzybox) app like how it's done on the Samsung phones? Or if there is a method that doesn't require replacing the stock recovery / flashing ROM components?

If anything its easier than any Samsung device but the thing is don't Root if it confuses you at least until you understand how to do it there is tons of guides online

That's kind'a my question, it's not that I don't know how, I just don't get if all the side-stuff in 90% of the guides is actually needed, so I asked if there is a way to just get SuperSU working without any custom-recoveries or other side-things.

To my knowledge, you need to have a custom recovery to root it. Unlocking the bootloader helps with this, as it ensures recovery and root sticks.

Or, just use the Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to unlock and root.

I was in the exact same position as you four days ago, up until then the only android devices I had owned were the Samsung Galaxy S2 and S4. It is quite different to the rooting process on the samsung devices but just as you did with the Samsung devices you will learn as you go along. My bootloader is unlocked, rooted with a custom rom and it was pretty easy to do

A sideload would only be needed if you didn't dump SuperSU on the phone first.
Unlock bootloader
Flash TWRP
Flash SuperSU
Done

Get wugfresh's nexus root toolkit. It's made for the novice in all of us.... Works great, self updates, awesome help section.. Look into it.. It's made specifically for the nexus line of products

Thanks for the replies guys, but noone seems to say what is the minimum that neds to be done for rooting.
I'll re-ask my question in a different way:
When rooting, does the bootloader always have to be unlocked and a custom recovery always needed to be installed?

Bootloader needs to be be unlocked, but can be relocked after rooting
AFAIK, you can use stock recovery, but custom offers better options/control over the situation. Most roms/kernels are flashed via twrp or cwm..... You can flash through rom toolbox if you choose to stay stock recovery

You can use Towel root to root your tablet in about 30 seconds. It'll also unlock your bootloader for you.
Cousin recovery is only needed of you intend to flash kernels and Roms and the like. If, like me, you only want root for installing things like xposed then you don't need to bother with one.

Yes, all the steps that are listed are required for rooting your Nexus. I understand what you are asking and I was also hesitant at first, but it was super easy to root and I didnt use the WugFresh took kit I manually rooted mine, following Zedomaxs Video tutorial, that way I could stop and Pause it at every step to make sure things were happening as they should here is the link

I confirm towelroot works on the 2013 nexus 7. After rooting unlock bootloader with app from google play. This method does not wipe user data or need a computer at all. And if root is lost and the towelroot exploit is patched with the next os update you can reroot the old way.

If you read the screen properly ull see the instructions on the screen itself do everything the same way you unlock the bootloader just instead of oem bootloader unlock type oem bootloader lock ...but make sure you're on stock rom and recovery

But then My root access will be wiped??
I want root access and dont want than annoying screen

two questions different answer but I would bet if there is a way to remove nag screen a google search would find it. Keep searching threads

there is no reason to re-lock bootloader, its still under warranty through Oneplus even with unlocked bootloader. but if u really want to
1. fastboot flash stock recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img) (make sure u download the file, its somewhere here on the forums
2. reboot and then reboot to fastboot (fastboot oem lock) (i have never re locked a bootloader so i am not sure if it will rewipe ur device again like unlocking it does)
3. boot to OS and get developer options again and uncheck OEM Unlock (do this last)
i would not recommend re locking since it wont void warranty and seemed like a lot people screwed up their devices relocking it, but they also unchecked the oem unlock before flashing stock recovery, also i am not sure if step 2 is needed, i would just make sure u flash stock recovery 1st before doing anything

What happens if i follow same steps with installed FREEDOM OS on my oneplus 3. You said make sure you are in stock OS.

Once i have unlocked the phn my device doesn't get recognised by the pc when i use command" fastboot devices".. Now, i'm unable to flash twrp, plz solve my issue.!!!

What part of be on stock OS is so hard to understand?
If you're not absolutely stock when relocking, you will brick your device.
Then good luck trying to enable OEM Unlocking when not being able to boot.
As someone who messes with their phone, relocking your bootloader is one of the worst possible things you can do.
If not done correctly, it WILL brick your device.
If you want to go back to stock, then surely do, there is absolutely no need to relock your boot loader unless you're selling your device to someone or if you're looking to pass SafetyNet for Android Pay or something.
Also, you cannot have the cake as well as eat it. You need to have an unlocked boot loader for root, exposed, etc. There is no way around this.
Phones previously had to be reverse engineered and exploited to gain root access, now OEMs freely allow unlocking.

I hope you can read this. I'm not a noob and I am looking to relock my bootloader because I am going to sell it. The person wants it fully stock so I need to relock the bootloader in order to regain access to official Ota updates.
I need to be on complete stock (stock recovery and rom) right? Would you please kindly point me to where I need to go to download the stock Rom and recovery. There's some TWRP flashable OTA zips on Oneplus forums that restore stock Rom and recovery but I want to be sure that that is enough and that I don't end up bricking my device for something as stupid as this. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Fash 3.2.4 FW from here.
Follow all instructions from here (except I would suggest sideloading the StockROM before relocking).

I followed the same guide posted on OnePlus Forum to re-lock my bootloader. Just follow them, it works.
Here is that link from OnePlus forum.
1. I restored my stock rom backup from TWRP
2. Flashed Stock recovery
3. fastboot oem lock
4. Sideload stock ROM
Done.
I unlocked because stock ROM I felt was much stabler and hassle free. Have rooted and played with custom ROMs enough in my Nexus 5 days. Just too much stress and can end up with non-working features. Might root again in future if I find something compelling in custom ROM.

If you unlock device, you will still be able to apply OTA. If you rooted by modifying the /system partition, OTA will fail, but if thou rooted using systemless method, you can apply OTA.

Iam on stock OOS 4.0.3 and i was plagued by the same error
--adb sideload the complete rom (with locked bootloader)-- method worked for me.
Previously i had unlocked bootloader and was on freedom OOS 2.3 with TWRP and then i realized that stock updates are better.
So i installed stock recovery and and tried to flash Stock Firmware 4.0.3 through sideload command and it failed.
then i installed TWRP and then installed stock OOS 4.0.3 and it installed fine but with some error.
Then i installed stock recovery
So i rebooted it and after long time it was installed but then i started getting dm_verity error and also i was frustated with unlocked bootloader message.
So i locked my boot loader first from fastboot oem lock and then sideloaded the stock 4.0.3 again and it really worked.
So now i am on stock rom and stock recovery and no more dm_verity error or unlocked bootloader msg to wait for 5 secs...
Now iam really loving my Oneplus 3..

ultimate / universal root / twrp installation guide?

Hi everyone
Sorry I am confused; there does not seem to be an ultimate universal root / twrp installation guide for the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite phone (my son's phone) in 2019.
No offense intended but all these various posts on the topic just help to confuse people!
I managed to unlock the bootloader but can anybody please tell me what is the easiest / user-friendliest way to install twrp (which version?) and root the phone so that I may proceed with flashing LineageOS afterwards to get rid of all the bloatware.?

It depends on what you want to do.
Root doesnt need TWRP, just Magisk. There's a guide on here.
Flashing custom ROMs needs TWRP. Each custom ROM has specific instructions.
There's no one-size-fits-all solution for this phone.

This is what I am saying it is confusing; I have been thru a few phones (samsungs, LGs, lately Xiaomi...)
and the process was first install twrp then root and then you could flash roms
I know when you flash LineageOS, you get root included in dev options so from your explanations I will look how to flash LineageOS but currently I'm struggling installing twrp as you have seen in my other post

My last phone didn't have A/B or encryption or use Magisk for rooting... So for me everything about this phone was new and different.
I started with stock (android one means I didn't immediately want a custom ROM). Then added Magisk. I added TWRP after edxposed caused me bootloops (magisk manager CLI can run from TWRP). I haven't installed a custom ROM yet but I've got a custom splash and bootanim.

Magisk working or not?

I heard people brick their phones after flashing magisk. Is that their fault or it's just that magisk doesn't work on this phone yet?

I will test some Magisk versions today.

The manager installs just fine, I downloaded the image from Mi and extracted the boot.img from their firmware. It seems to have been patched just fine with the Magisk app, I haven't flashed it yet, haven't figured out how to get to download mode on this phone. They have a custom boot loader and custom recovery on it. adb reboot download just reboots the phone. I went through the motions of unlocking the bootloader per their instructions but they're having me wait a week before I can unlock the bootloader. I'm hesitant to flash magisk before unlocking the bootloader and making sure I can re-flash with twrp if needed.

Flashing magisk bricks the phone, flashing patched boot.img also bricks the device.
Kingoroot anyone ?

A loot of people brick their phones.. but the sad part is to recover it back.. I dont know why is so hard to unbrick almost everyone Xiaomi phones...

bricking rn8p due to magisk installation is easy to recover by flashing boot.img from stock rom.

no, root is not working. but it is easily possible to recover a bootlooping rn8p.

Such a shame, I can't believe there's no custom recovery and root available yet for such a popular device. Let's wait and see.

Should be quite similar to before, but if you flash preloader & lk, you can recover from these bricks. That said, I've never had magisk bricking it for me.

I am on MIUI 12, Android 10, Chinese Beta Rom and I have Magisk installed as well...

Any update on a fully working method to root our device?
Android 11, custom ROM, CFW

There is an easier way.
I had twrp as recovery and when i flashed magisk v20 zip it bricked both the normal system and recovery
It was saying "The system has been destroyed"
So i was doing random stuff and found the solution
1) go to fastboot
2) from pc execute the "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" you probably know how to install twrp
3) then boot to recovery
4) enter password and allow modifications
5) go to reboot > System
Thats how i did it.
I have not tested with other custom recoveries

i have the last firmware now global (phone is global 2) if i put twrp for magisk i have to stop upgrade the phone right?
second. i never liked stock roms so again... if i put twrp i can flash whatever rom i want or there are steps every time so i wont brick the phone? thank u guys for ur time

dont do it

For rooting stock ROM, you can flash twrp and flash magisk but you should be careful to pick a recovery which is for android 10 and also not for CFW.
For flashing custom roms, you should read the megathread. It's not very complicated and if you follow the exact steps, you will not get bricked.

with custom rom i need 1 twrp version? or for let's say remix os i need that twrp for lineage i need this twrp.

It's all explained in the megathread, sir. For custom ROMs you need CFW recovery but for you to be on CFW you need to flash CFW with a non-CFW recovery.
Best way to do it is in the CrDroid post.

i tried rooting with magisk on latest android 10 miui 11 , basically you will fail safetynet and basic integrity will fail as well you can try to hide fingerprint with magisk busybox and props module and type su to give termux root access and edit fingerprint to pixel 4 but it's not guaranteed i don't know if there is google attestation hardware in begonia anyways you can try.
