I just noticed this recently, whenever I receive a text, the screen wakes from it. Does anyone know of a way to disable this? I looked all over, can't find a setting for this.
Stock, unrooted (not rooted).
edit: would like to avoid using apps (i.e. go sms, handaccent)

I believe it's built into the framework of the rom. You could try using a third party or android stock sms app and deleting the samsung one, but you'd have to be rooted, and it may cause issues. I use google voice for my texts so I dont have any screen wakes for texts.

thanks for the reply, but i would like to avoid using a msging app, if at all possible.
i dont' know what you mean, my screen doesn't wake when i get a text or email?
Really? Does anyone else have this problem or know what I am talking about?
Are you using the stock messaging app? Are you running stock, unrooted? These are my circumstances, if it makes a difference.

Thanks, will have to live with it until I decide to root and flash a rom.
Or you can use things like gosms from the app store.

Root the phone and install the stock android sms app from galaxy nexus. Fix a few annoying problems: screen wake and vibration during call. :good:

Yea I have the same issue (or functionality not sure which) but I know if you root there are mods/roms to turn that off. I have not tried any though. Good luck and I would be interested in your resolution.
I'm stock and not rooted and my screen only comes on when I receive a text. Not on email.
Thank goodness I don't mind my screen turning on for text or it would annoy the crap out of me.
Actually you are correct, screen wakes only from receiving Texts, but still rather annoying nonetheless. I'm kind of getting use to it by now though.

Since I upgraded to 2.2 I have been having lag with Handcent. One issue I am having is that I can't remember if it started lagging immediately after 2.2, or if it was a Handcent upgrade that made it start lagging.
Is anyone else lagging with Handcent on the Evo? Is there a stable version? Any suggestions on fixing this?
I searched the forums and did not find anything.
What do you mean by "lag"? My lag issue is that new messages pop-up a few seconds before the notification.

It actually seems to have lagged the whole phone. I did a few uninstalls and reinstalls to check. In the app, typing lags, switching between things lags, I may have found a non-laggy version. Testing it now.

I may have found a solution if you are willing to go to an older version. This version is 3.0.4, it has no ads.

I'm actually using the same Rom and Kernal and Handcent is working perfectly for me... But then again i turned of vibration when texting and that helped a lot.
OP maybe try turning off vibration when texting? You'll definitely see an improvement.
Hope this helps!

The version I posted a link to really seems to help with the lag.
I don't have the kind of lag your mentioning, other than the notifications it works perfect for me.
I know that's an old topic but nobody gave the solution for this lag. In my case pop-up shows up and then after few seconds notification of handcent sms about recived text shows up as well as sound notification. I got rid of this issue by uninstalling emoji plugin for handcent. Maybe thats helpful for somebody.
Hey guys. Im having a problem with Light Flow. Im sure a lot of you use it? Although i couldnt find many threads on it. I even searched Google for this issue. So hopefully you guys can help.
Anyways im using Light Flow 3.0.2
And it works great but a lot of the time ill get a notificiation (screen will be off) the LED will flash its appropreate color. Ill check the notification (Lets say Gmail) read the email, delete the email, respond to the email w/e and turn the screen off again.
Then the LED will still be flashing for that notification even though i checked it and erased it.
The only way i have found to fix this other then reboot ofcourse is to go into Light Flow > Notifications. I notice when i do this LightFlow gets granted Superuser then i exit turn screen off and all is good.
Any ideas?

Did you make sure you don't have any other app notifications that have the same color?
Are you using any task killers or killing the app with the hold of back button?
Same issue here, disabled it until it gets an update to support JB.

for me
when removed the app it disabled the vibration for new sms, gmail ..etc
tried everything without success (disabled settings & re-enable it, rebooting, ...etc), so I didn't bother to install it again after a factory reset (stock ICS by the way)
if anyone had the same problem and knew how to correct it let me know.
delete me please
There is a lightflow widget that clears all lightflow notifications when tapped.
I am just using that while waiting for a fix (which couldn't come soon enough).
FYI guys with JB 4.1.1 I got light flow to work 100%

So i found out a little more.
So for me before 4.1.1 SMS was my biggest issue that notification would never go away unless i manually cleared it with the app or the widget.
I noticed that is was working on 4.1.1 after i went to accessibility and turned it off and then on again for Lightflow. after i did this i noticed that the notification for SMS was clearing on its own. So i thought it was all good.
UNTIL
I reset/tuned off the phone and received another txt. The notification would not clear on its own. So i was messing around with it and went back to accessibility and turned it off and on again and now the SMS notification clears itself until the next reset of the phone.
Hope it works for you guys. I dont mind toggling a setting until an update comes out.
lightflow issues not fixed on 4.1.1 derp :silly:
Gtalk and Gmail both clear correctly. Gonna see how it is with SMS and Missed Call when I get one of those.
uh. what's up with the title of this thread?
How about on 4.1? Is it playing nice on there? A ToroPlus GNex here...I will buy it if yes
I just downloaded the lite to try it. I feel like its hit or miss. Too much customization and easy to get lost. For example, right now, I have two different notifications going off for like SMS and email. Because within the SMS and email app themselves I've defined a notification sound and then within light flow settings you can define a sound. So I get x2. I think the trick may be to go into the app settings themselves and set them to silent. Then use light flow and set the sounds up. That seems to be the KEY. However, there is a learning curve it seems to this APP. Once you set it up, your good...but dam it takes awhile.
Colors are working good though, but the dismissal of notification via "opening the app" dont work worth crap. You have to set it to "on screen" dismissal
Plus I found myself disabling and re-nabling the app from withing settings --> Accessibility often.

No, I was fine on 4.0.4 but when i went to 4.1 it stopped working, I'm now on 4.1.1 and it's still not working.
It is a fantastic app though, I'm sure the developer will update the app eventually to work with 4.1.1.
as the title states, I would like to know if there is away that I am not seeing to disable the screen illuminating when I receive a notification (sms, email.. etc)
I don't like this feature, the phone already tells me via audio notification that I have received a message and I think it is a battery drainer (not matter how minuscule) I'd like to have some control over this...
With my screen off, it lights up when I receive a message and I would like to disable this function. I already have LED notification turned off...
I hope I was able to communicate my desire
Thanks in advance for your help

Oops, you got a free thanks. The way I dealt with it was to install Handcent and then disable the stock messaging application. But I'm on US Cellular and I'm not sure how much different our phones are. Handcent has MANY more features than the stock application as a perk also.

That is an alternative yes. I would like to keep the stock app though because it's been my experience to have lots of problems with third party messaging apps. For example, I am unable to use MightText while using some third party apps. Sometimes the apps update and have FC closes afterwards.
If you didn't mean to give me a thanks, can't you take it back... I mean if you really wanted too, don't get me wrong, I'll take all the thanks I can get!
I'd also be interested in this..I find it super anoying.

When I receive a SMS, the phone wakes up.
Having a hard time finding the setting to turn it off...any insight?
bump for this - I don't see why the screen needs to come on every time a sms message comes in. I haven't seen this happen with email(exchange), gmail, GTalk, etc... so annoying to waste battery for no reason with the LED indicator enabled.
I've looked and looked and don't really see anyone complaining about this, which I find really strange.

No one has found an answer? Just got the AT&T version and I do about 20,000 texts a month, so this is very annoying and wastes battery, ESPECIALLY since it has a notification LED.
I got so tired of it, that I just switched over to handcent.

Just called Samsung and he searched and put me on hold for a while and came back saying there is no way to change this. He recommended downloading a 3rd party texting app or seeing if there is an app that will do this :/

It was annoying me as well, the only fix I found without switching to another app is to go to Settings in the messaging app and make sure everything is unchecked under Notifications. If you do this, you will no longer see new text messages in the notification bar, but if you want you can use Nova launcher premium that has an add on called Tesla unread plug in (it adds a number to a messaging shortcut when new sms arrives).
Hope this helps.
The notification noise (for texts, and I don't know if it's for anything else) just runs forever and ever until I actually open handcent or the stock messaging app. I've looked through settings and don't see anything that clearly says it'll turn that off. How do you do that?

In your text app Go to Settings> Message Alert Repetition where you can adjust how often it will notify you.

I already turned off notifications in the stock texting app so it was like I don't have it installed without actually uninstalling it. I'll see if it's one of those things that magically goes away on its own after a while.
Did you try looking at the settings in Handscent for the same type of setting?
Something Experimental...
Yeah :/
Yep, your not alone. I have the same issue when using GoSMSPro. As best as I can tell this is an issue when you use a Third Party SMS app. FYI: I am on a custom ROM and have the issue. If I uninstall Go SMSPro the issue disappears.
