Folks, I've looked around for a couple of days to find a way to OTA update without loosing my data, settings, customizations ...etc, but all guides shows a complete restore to revert to a blank vanilla start, so please guys just check my status below and tell me what is the best solution for this
my GNEX is 90% stock (stock rom, stock kernel, but only CMW and rooted) is it possible to restore the stock recovery, and unroot without factory reset? to be 100% stock for the OTA update.
if yes then please just hint me the way and i'll be good to go.
If you haven't modified any system files...yes.
AKA
You haven't used an adblocker.
You haven't removed any system apps.
You haven't used your root access...at all, really.
Why not use titanium to backup user apps...
Make a nandroid...
And transfer those files to your PC.
Factory reset.
Transfer Titanium back over...
And restore apps.
You'll only have system settings to change at that point.
Post 2 of the guide linked in my sig will help with this process.
As well as posts 1/3 on setting up and using ADB to pull the files off of your phone (MTP is slow and unreliable...but if you want to use it - go for it).

I've had my Desire for a couple of months now and I love it. I'm still running stock eclair on there (T-Mobile UK), but I'm going away in a week and will want to use my iPod touch to get on some apps I have, so I was looking into wireless tethering.
Now, I've rooted a G2 and loaded custom firmware before, so I have a vague idea what I'm doing and I'm sure the tuts on here will help me out, but reading over them, there doesn't seem to be a way to root my phone without losing data.
Basicially, I want to root it at the least but keep ALL of my data on there. Once it's rooted, I'll have no problems loading custom ROMs on there as I can do a NAND backup of my current data, play with custom ROMs then restore the backup, right?
So my questions summed up:
Can I root without losing my current data? This includes everything, I want my phone as is after the root.
Will a NAND backup take an image of the current phone data's state?
Can I restore the NAND backup image and carry on using the phone as if nothing ever happened?
Rooting will cause your phone to lose data, you need a program called MyBackup Pro (you can use the trial to backup/ restore) until you have rooted and can install titanium backup / rom manager.
yeah the recovery mode nand backup will backup everything so you can restore your phone system back to normal.
the HTC sense backup feature will backup a handful of data settings on your phone, even if you do lose everything and still have your sd you can reflash back to stock and it will restore them 'handful' of settings it saved. Of the top of my head i think it didnt backup screen settings (Display settings) and application data. I do recall the stock htc sense backing up sms, contacts, wifi etc.
Hi there,
I just got my galaxy yesterday, I've read through the FAQs and searched the web but couldnt figure out how to flash the Galaxy without losing the installed apps. I read that the internal SD isnt touched but when I checked the JP3 build my device lost all installed apps.
So in case I want to revert back to another or try another firmware, what switch would I need to set not reconfiguring everything from scratch? If this isnt possible are there any other ways to quickly restore all apps I've installed?

edit: as samsung-firmwares seems to be down, does anyone have a UK O2 stock firmware image available?
Use Rom manager, from there you can backup/reflash and keep the data
Titanium backup. this app needs root but save every app. Normal apps protected apps and system apps
Titanium backup is a nice app.
I have been trying to read through all the threads and want to confirm if I understand the best approach for playing with different Roms (after my system is rooted).
Is the best approach to:
1) On my stock Rom, get the system into a stable state with all my apps, settings, etc.
2) Install Titanium Backup and Rom Manager
3) Run Titanium backup and backup "All user-apps and system data"
- q: Is this the correct "batch" to run?
4) Run Nandroid and backup the entire ROM so I have a stable environment to return too if necessary.
--- Now I am good for new ROMs! --
5) Run Rom Manager and install a new ROM (is this the best approach? Does this automatically do a system swipe?)
-- On first run of the new ROM --
6) Install Titanium backup
7) Restore "all user-apps and system data"
- q: Is this the correct "batch". What will not be restored with this approach? (I assume I will have to re-setup all the widgets/screens but will my apps be reestablished as expected?). Is there any potential conflicts with system data/ apps being restored from ROM to ROM?
8) Clean-up widgets/screens (assuming that does not happen with titanium backup)
9) Run Nandroid to backup if I like the set-up and may want to return to it.
Any steps I am missing? Any issues I should be aware of?
Thanks!
One more question.
My phone is unrevoked forever!
To install the latest radio (needed by many ROMs), before step 5 (install new ROM), do I need to unroot the phone or can I just install the radio zip file? (last time I tried the zip file, it claim to have loaded after a bunch of reboots but my radio was not updated)
everything seems to be right, well, according to me, because everything that you just posted, i do too. and as for the radio, there are ways to install the radio with and without root, just depending on your phone.
make sure that when you do the batch restore in ti backup (after the fresh rom is intalled) that you have the paid version. because otherwise you gotta do each app manually and it is very time consuming. also, i have heard that it is best to redo system data and not carry it over, but i think its easier to just batch restore all missing apps +system data. i didnt have any problems with it
Thanks!
Another question:
Does unrevoked forever! mean my phone is permanantly rooted? For example, if I accept Verizon's OTA update to Froyo, am I still rooted (can I add wireless tether) or does unrevoked forever! just enable the ability to overwrite ROM's (aka if I get the OTA update to Froyo, it is locked down but I could still choose to load a different ROM)?
Basically, my real desire to root was for wireless tether and froyo (fine with sense so I don't need to go crazy with a vanilla install). If the officital OTA release will be the easiest solution, I can easily wait a week. If that won't work, I will probably install Sky Raider w/ sense.
Thanks.
its kinda hard to explain, so just head to unrevoked[dot]com/forever
I read it and the q&a is open to interpretation since I also read that OTA Froyo may be unrootable.
Basically, I am trying to get a yes/no for the following:
Even if the OTA Froyo is not rootable, does having Unrevoked Forever! installed allow me via the steps listed on the forever page (under "Reinstalling an official recovery") make the OTA Froyo rooted?
Also, assuming that does root OTA Froy, those steps say to find the superuser access update.zip. Where is the appropriate thread/download link for that file?
Thanks

Hello,
Thanks all for the great site, sorry to ask this if its all ready been asked but there is so much information here I just cannot make sense of it all and don't where to begin.
I am working on the Galaxy nexus GSM for an employee and we had to unlock and root it to get rSAP working with his car.
I found here a one click solution (cannot find it anymore) after installing the Android SDK and finally getting the Drivers right (not easy) it worked and I unlocked the phone and rooted it. rSAP works!!
Unfortunately this set the phone back to default.
Now the employee is constantly receiving the 4.0.2 update notification (cannot turn off?) what he cannot install (dead android guy every time)
So my question is, what is the best way I can update the phone to 4.0.2 without losing all the data, apps and settings and then make sure the update notification reminder is turned off?
Thanks for any help!
John

I would load the latest AOKP rom, you can find it on here. Then he won't get any update notifications and it has Google autorestore feature which means once he logs into the device his apps and settings will be restored. Would that help? AOKP rom will bring the device up to 4.0.3 by the way. You will still be able to use the ASDK to install drivers etc.
Hi, thanks for the lighting fast reply..
I tried a search but cannot find that ROM, could you maybe point in the right direction?
will installing that ROM delete everything?
Yeah it will because you should wipe data and cache before flashing in CWM recovery. Do a backup of everything with Titanium before wiping. I wouldn't bother backing up apps cos the autorestore will download them and install automatically once your user logs in.

Be sure to flash the GApps zip file straight after flashing the rom. You know what I mean?
Let me know how you get on. I also modded the Kernel, I am using Franco's and it is insane.
Hi Jd,
I really am a noob and do not think I can undertake such an action..
The instructions there are very minimal...
Let me put it is this way - Is there any way I can easily ensure that the update notification is turned off - without having to wipe the phone and start over?
Cheers for the help man!!

Unfortunetly not afaik. Someone told me you can mess around with an updater-script file but like yourself I am pretty much a noob to so I don't know.
I would repost and have the topic as something like "disabling ota update notifications" and then link to this post. There is a good chance that someone here will know a solution. That is if there is one John, I have not heard of one though. Best of luck.

Never said it did
Erm, I would definitely not install a custom ROM onto someone else's phone, with or without their consent unless the phone owner was technologically-minded and knew their way around the phone! I would assume that since they offloaded their issue to someone else, they do not belong to that group.
What I would suggest is to keep it as stock as possible. Grab the factory 4.0.2 maguro image (ICL53F) from Google (http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html). Back up apps and app data & SMS (I wouldn't bother with system data, I've only had problems when restoring this afterwards) using Titanium Backup. If there's only minimal user installed apps without any useful data, just letting Google's servers restore missing apps should be fine in lieu of Titanium Backup. Make a nandroid (via CWM) in case something hits the fan when you're flashing.
Once you've done all of this, flash the factory image and reapply root. The phone should now be on 4.0.2 (removing annoying update notifications) and will still receive future OTAs instead of being stuck on a static version of a custom ROM(!!!). I have heard that CWM can cause troubles with OTA updates so I would remove it once you've completed all of this as it's likely the client won't need it anyway (drop reboot-from-recovery.p back into /system/ and it'll restore stock recovery). Oh yeah don't forget to install Titanium Backup (stop all other app downloads in the market for now), restore apps and SMS. Done.
If you don't know how to flash the factory image, follow this tut: http://androidtobe.blogspot.com/2011/12/galaxy-nexus-installing-ics-402-from.html

THAT is the best advice in this thread, keeps the phone stock and up-to-date so the only time he'd get an update notification is when 4.0.x is pushed out
The ONLY thing I'd say is if you don't wanna lose the data, when you get to step 6 of the guide linked to above leave the -w switch from the update line. So instead of typing:
fastboot -w update image-yakju-icl53f.zip
You'd type:
fastboot update image-yakju-icl53f.zip
Hi,
I have used this phone rooted for the last 8 months+ and after a full restore to stock and re-root, some changes seem to stick even after a complete un-root.
Long story short, been using LBE Security as a firewall and permission manager and i noticed it stopped blocking internet access for certain apps even when it showed it does but it did not. Decided to restore to stock T989UVLI4 and re-rooted and LBE is still miss behaving... tried a full factory reset, fix permissions via CWM and LBE is still refusing to work.
I am not sure what root apps could have messed up any of of the system files that could survive a full un-root, but this seems to be the case.
I s there a way to see if any system directories changed when they should have not and such directory would not fully recover on a complete un-root factory reset?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
