[Q] Newbie: What is the best practice for quickly experimenting with new roms? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to read through all the threads and want to confirm if I understand the best approach for playing with different Roms (after my system is rooted).
Is the best approach to:
1) On my stock Rom, get the system into a stable state with all my apps, settings, etc.
2) Install Titanium Backup and Rom Manager
3) Run Titanium backup and backup "All user-apps and system data"
- q: Is this the correct "batch" to run?
4) Run Nandroid and backup the entire ROM so I have a stable environment to return too if necessary.
--- Now I am good for new ROMs! --
5) Run Rom Manager and install a new ROM (is this the best approach? Does this automatically do a system swipe?)
-- On first run of the new ROM --
6) Install Titanium backup
7) Restore "all user-apps and system data"
- q: Is this the correct "batch". What will not be restored with this approach? (I assume I will have to re-setup all the widgets/screens but will my apps be reestablished as expected?). Is there any potential conflicts with system data/ apps being restored from ROM to ROM?
8) Clean-up widgets/screens (assuming that does not happen with titanium backup)
9) Run Nandroid to backup if I like the set-up and may want to return to it.
Any steps I am missing? Any issues I should be aware of?
Thanks!

One more question.
My phone is unrevoked forever!
To install the latest radio (needed by many ROMs), before step 5 (install new ROM), do I need to unroot the phone or can I just install the radio zip file? (last time I tried the zip file, it claim to have loaded after a bunch of reboots but my radio was not updated)

everything seems to be right, well, according to me, because everything that you just posted, i do too. and as for the radio, there are ways to install the radio with and without root, just depending on your phone.

make sure that when you do the batch restore in ti backup (after the fresh rom is intalled) that you have the paid version. because otherwise you gotta do each app manually and it is very time consuming. also, i have heard that it is best to redo system data and not carry it over, but i think its easier to just batch restore all missing apps +system data. i didnt have any problems with it

Thanks!
Another question:
Does unrevoked forever! mean my phone is permanantly rooted? For example, if I accept Verizon's OTA update to Froyo, am I still rooted (can I add wireless tether) or does unrevoked forever! just enable the ability to overwrite ROM's (aka if I get the OTA update to Froyo, it is locked down but I could still choose to load a different ROM)?
Basically, my real desire to root was for wireless tether and froyo (fine with sense so I don't need to go crazy with a vanilla install). If the officital OTA release will be the easiest solution, I can easily wait a week. If that won't work, I will probably install Sky Raider w/ sense.
Thanks.

its kinda hard to explain, so just head to unrevoked[dot]com/forever

I read it and the q&a is open to interpretation since I also read that OTA Froyo may be unrootable.
Basically, I am trying to get a yes/no for the following:
Even if the OTA Froyo is not rootable, does having Unrevoked Forever! installed allow me via the steps listed on the forever page (under "Reinstalling an official recovery") make the OTA Froyo rooted?
Also, assuming that does root OTA Froy, those steps say to find the superuser access update.zip. Where is the appropriate thread/download link for that file?
Thanks

Bloatware...

Ok, I'm sitting here with my stock Evo (with Unrevoked) and I'm really enjoying it. I see all the ROMs being made and I'm tempted to dip my toe in and get dirty with flashing custom ROMs but I'm not quite there yet. What I'd really love to do as a first step is to just manage to remove all the Sprint bloatware from my 2.1 stock Evo. I don't want to lose all my apps or anything if I can avoid it. I really want to just "do something" then "reboot" then be able to use a file manager type of application and start deleting things like Sprint Nascar. Is this possible and how do I go about this?
You need to have root and NAND unlock for the removal of system apps to be permanent. That's the only way you would be able to remove the apps via a file manager like root explorer.
Or you could remove the apps while in recovery
For an easy guide on how to root and unlock nand go here (this guide also covers backing up your current data and apps)
After that, you can flash a stock rom that has root access and you'll be able remove apps at your leisure.
I rooted with toasts part 1 and part 2, using flipz .6 rom with the latest radio and I was able to remove the sprint bloatware by using titanium backup.
Will doing all the NAND root stuff leave me with the same system as I have now plus root access? It's just that I have everything the way I like it now and I don't want to start from scratch or have to install someone else's stuff and try and set everything up again just so I can remove the Bloatware off the phone.
No, you'll need to flash a stock rom that has root. You can use titanium backup to back up your apps and home screen and restore them after flashing.

I recommend following the TheBiles' guide. He did an awesome walk-through of toast's roots then you can flash a custom ROM. I did this in a little over an hour and it worked perfectly. At the beginning he backs up all your apps, and after I flashed Fresh's ROM, I was able to restore all my apps back the way they were and all the bloatware was removed except for what you want to keep you can add back in after. I can't post links yet, but here is the post with Thread ID:

Titanium Backup - Two Questions

1) When running Titanium backup on a rooted phone; what is the appropriate batch file to use so that when/if you flash a new custom rom, you can restore your phone. I suspect "all apps and all data" is a really bad idea because it seems to include system apps as well (e.g., EPST v2.1-update; Field Trial v2.1-update, etc). I definitely want app data if I can get it (e.g., MyCollectionPro where I scanned a ton of DVDs) to be backed up.
2) I am running the busybox that came with the 'final payload' from unrEVOked. I have no errors from Titanium Backup. Should I still hit the problems button to download a new busybox? Is it new? Will it affect anything else in a negative fashion?
Thanks!
I just followed these steps listed here and everything has been fine for me.
http://forum.legendroid.com/titaniu...n/?PHPSESSID=6c5e18e2e9070d2282d36a633688aaeb
2) It should not matter or affect anything as I have done TI backups with that same version of busybox.

[Q] Do I need to update to 3.70?

So my evo currently has software version 3.29 and this past weekend I rooted it with unrevoked3. I noticed that there is an update available (3.70), is there any reason for me to update this? I tried updating but while it was updating it crashed (I think because of the unrevoked).
And another question. I want to run new themes, etc. I used titanium back up to back up my apps and used Rom Manager to back up my system settings. Was it necessary for me to use 2 different programs to back up my phone and is there anyway to test to see if everything on my phone is backed up?
Thanks.
Ok 1. Never accept an OTA --over the air update after your rooted. It'll kill your root.
Do what i did pick a ROM from here thats based on 3.70. You'll have a new rom + all the updates.
2. No you didnt need 2 backups. Titanium has a batch button that says "Backup sytem data and user apps" thats the ONLY one you need!!!
Hey dont take it from me tho....always nand & try things for yourself!!!!

I did try to OTA install but in the middle of installing the OTA program showed an error and stopped. My root is still there though.
Could you please direct me to where I can find 3.70 roms and what I need to launch them with?
I backed up using both programs any harm in this besides taking up more space on my microsd?
Thanks again.

[Q] Unroot a custom rom?

Hey All,
For Work I need to install the app Good for Enterprise so I can get my calendar and work email pushed to my phone. Unfortunately it is company policy that it be unrooted. Presumeably a security issue. Is it possible to unroot a custom rom? i'd rather not go back to stock for the simple reason of app storage. I love A2SD+ and being able to have as many apps as I want installed. Also nandroid backups, that would go away without root too wouldn;t it? Can I just remove the SU.apk? Will that suffice to be "unrooted"? Is that even possible?

If you want to unroot, you'll need to go back to stock.
The reason they want unrooted phones, is not so much a security issue, as it is they just don't understand or don't wish to deal with possible problems.
If you backup your apps and data you can run the official RUU, and it will put the original unrooted system to your phone. I don't know other method.
Here are the official ROMs: http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
Removing the SU binaries will unroot you, I don't see the need as to why you have to be unrooted though.
apparently you can't use the new movie-rental feature of google's market, when you are rooted.
Is it possible to stick to a custom rom but unroot it, so that google recognises your phone as a not-rooted device and allows you to watch movies from market?
I don't need root-permissions every day - in fact I only need it for Titanium Backup, so deleting su-binaries and/or superuser.apk would be ok - but it must be possible to restore them (via recovery/adb) to run TB.
This probably isn't what google wants you to do since you can download the movie to watch later and if you have a working recovery you probably could get you hands on the downloaded files, but still - would be nice, if this was possible.
Easiest way to unroot and go back to stock is to stick a PB99IMG.zip on your sdcard, and turn your phone on with volume held down
How about this:
1) Go back to stock ROM via RUU
2) Install Good For Enterprise (I guess your IT department installs this, so they can check you are not rooted?)
3) ROOT the stock ROM using UnRevoked
4) Take a Titanium Backup of Good For Enterprise
5) Re-install your custom ROM
6) Restore the Titanium Backup of GfE
-> You have a rooted, custom ROM with GfE installed. And your company will never know!

Has anyone ever tested this?
Or why don't you just delete superuser via adb or android commander
good for enterprise checks for root access/ su every time it starts. It's not an issue of not being able to install the app. It's available for free on the market. The problem is when entering all your info and starting it up, it checks for SU.
I am guessing the best way around this is to install custom rom, set everything up that you need that requires SU/root. Then delete all the su/root related files. Then install Good.
Unfortunately I don't have a list of all the files that have to be deleted for this to work.
There have been reports that other users who have tried this method got it to work but the App stopped syncing after a few days.
List:
/system/app/superuser
/system/bin/su
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I tried this method, renamed the 2 files. It has been working for last 24 hours. I'll update again after a week if it still works..
Edit:
yep this works perfectly.

What did you rename the libs file to?

I have rooted my HTC Salsa to get apps2sd which is great, but now my mobile banking app says it will not work on a rooted device, similar to your issue.
I am new to android modding, what commands do i need to enter where to rename the files you mention ?
Thanks in advance.

wont work good enterprises would more than likely check every time like sky go. you would have to removed a2sd command line i think and all su binarys ( and su.akp ( difficult as its normally a system app and once one of the su has been removed you dont have premition to remove the other/
and to the donunt who said ( the dont understand root) wanna cookie 0. basicly good enterprise is a secure web client for companys to send information to mobiles, i have it on my work (iphone) <<<< scummmy.. anyways as root gives to the option to do what ever you or anyone else wants with the phone in theory you could use that system to breack the law or for instance chaindd could possible put an update in to su that will take data from the company> for google videos ) well with root you can screen record ( basicly ) excuse the spelling im trying to find out how to un root and keep all of my system ui mods and themes and my rom ( proving difficult)
hey I know that this is based on a old post but I have a question did you ever find out how to unroot a custom rom that is pre-rooted?

How do i root my incredible?

How do i root my droid incredible s?
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOU FOLLOWING THIS PROCESS.
First of all, you must check if your smart-phone is on S-ON or S-OFF version. 1 – Open menu and then to Settings, you will see ‘Applications’ Go to it and turn off Fast Boot. 2 – You must turn off your smart-phone. 3 -Now you’re going to boot your smart-phone into Hboot. You can easily do that by holding the volume down button while turning the device back on. 4 – Most likely, you will see a white screen and you will have to look on the first line to see which version your smart-phone is depending upon. Your phone should be on S-OFF version if you want to root your phone and flash custom ROM's.
To get S-Off you need to use an XTC Clip or wait for AlphaRevX
Please, you must follow these instructions to the letter.
Now that your Smart-phone is of S-OFF version and you’re all set to root your phone.
- Download Gingerbreak APK - Make sure USB debugging is enabled - Make sure you have an SD card (formatted and) inserted - Get the APK on the phone somehow, and install it - Open the APK, press the root button - Wait a few minutes. If there are no problems, the device will reboot (note that the reboot itself can take like 10 minutes due to cache wipe) - Make sure the Superuser app is install and working - Optional: Install BusyBox from Market (I personally prefer the stericsson installer) - Optional: Uninstall GingerBreak, you don't need it on your phone anymore
Get CWM (Clock Work Mod) on the device. - download ROM Manager from the market. - Open the app and Flash/install Clock Work Mod Recovery.

This is the only way to root gingerbread on the dinc.

May I tag along?
I have decided to root my Dinc. Currently on 2.2
I am getting this constant notice to install the System Update 4.08.605.2.
The message states that it is ready to install.
Can I choose "install later" and then proceed and root with unrevoked ?
Or will the update install first, when my phone reboots again?
Is this a valid concern ?

If you want to root your phone do not accept the update. Root it first, go here and follow the instruction www.unrevoked.com after that you can flash a custom Gingerbread ROM. Do some research before flashing anything, patience for this pays off believe me!
I've done considerable research. Enough to learn that I do not want this update before rooting my phone.
My concern is that the update has been downloaded onto my phone and awaiting a reboot to install. Is that possible ?
When I go to: menu-settings-about phone-system updates, I see this:
Android Software Update
(4.08.605.02)
Downloaded and Verified 87.7 MB
Bla-Bla-Bla......
Restart & Install
Can I proceed with root anyway ?

Help, I have a problem...
I ran the Unrevoked3 and got the "your done" message. My phone was fully booted.
Everything appeared to be normal.
I installed Titanium, that tells me I have root access.
However, I cant get into clockworkmod.
I can't do anything with rom manager.
Then I remembered that I did not format my sd card to fat32.
Here is where I messed up.
I copied the contents of the sdcard to my desktop, formatted to fat32, then copied contents from desktop file back to sdcard.
Then I ran the unrevoked3 again. It did not finish, instead it ended with the "firmware too new" message. The phone was still in HBOOT.
Next, somehow I inadvertantly selected "clear storage" and pressed the power button.
When I was booted up again, all of my downloaded apps were gone, as well as my contacts and settings.
I figured at this point I might as well do a factory reset too and just start over from the beginning.
After the reset, I was surprised to see I still had my email settings.
I went into HBOOT, still S-off.
Rebooted and ran Unrevoked3 again and got the same results as above.
All seems to be ok, except I'm not rooted and I can't access the Wifi setup.
What should I do now ?
From what I gather, you are still s-off.
What troubles were you having in accessing CWM? What issues arose in rom manager? Did you also have superuser installed (requirement to use rooted apps)? Please elaborate.
SINCE the factory reset, have you re-downloaded Rom Manager and do you have access to the Android Market? You may want to re-download rom manager so you can perform a backup of your stock rom (i.e. prior to flashing roms) once you set up your phone how you want due to your accidental factory reset.
I say "may" because the same backup process can be performed via recovery. Recovery can be downloaded from: "http://pvillecomp.com?page_id=128"
Once downloaded, you must install the file via hboot, so reboot and accept the update and DO NOT let your phone off.
To address your present situation,
Were your contacts stored in gmail OR Verizon backup assistant? If so, those are easily retrieved. You may want them in gmail now on to avoid this from occurring in the future.
What issues are you having with accessing wifi set up? Are you able to access it at all via Settings/Wireless Networks?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I am still s-off
When I first initiated the unrevoked process, my phone indicated an “unable to read file” error when the process was “flashing clockworkmod”
Rom manager failed to flash and “forced close”
Wi Fi displays “error”, can't access via settings.
I was working on my PC. Then since my last post, I tried this on my laptop last night.
This time, the unrevoked batch process indicated “Success !” and then “Done”
My phone did not display any error messages and finished in a black screen with orange scrolling text and then the phone rebooted.
Wi-Fi still displays “error” when I tap it.
I downloaded Rom manager and initiated Flash ClockworkMod recovery, and it completed without error. Current recovery: ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 ( I did not Erase Recovery first )
I have Superuser Permission app in the drawer, but not Superuser. Neither shows up in Manage applications.
I also download Titanium backup. It shows Root access: OK (BusyBox 1.18.4-Titanium from app)
I don't know if that indicates that I am rooted or not.

Congrats your rooted! Not sure what the issue is with your wifi tho. Try a custom Rom/Kernel and see if that fixes the issue.
We are talking about the same Superuser, which is great cuz your rooted apps work. The wifi issue should not be happening although that occurred with the accidental clear storage. If you plan on flashing a rom then this will not be present as you will format data, cache, etc and essentially wipe your phone to the point of a clean state. You are definitely rooted as you have CWM 5.0 as your recovery.
Have you retrieved your contacts? Prior to flashing ANYTHING that involves wiping in recovery or rom manager, ensure you have them saved in gmail OR Verizon backup.

Yes, I am saying that a custom Rom/Kernel might fix your WiFi issue.
As for backing up thru recovery it mean booting into CWM, and making a backup. I do this instead of backing up thru Rom Manager because I have had some issues with Rom Manager.
