Hi guys just wondering what your input is on the nexus 7 vs this tablet? If $ wasn't an issue would you upgrade your a100 to a nexus 7? Why or why not?
Main reasons for me considering this is Nexus 7 way better battery life and screen display. Would miss the ad card slot though

I have had an acer a100 for about 6 months and recently bought a nexus 7. The a100 is rooted but running stock 4.03 with the gm kernel. Really rock solid overclocked at 1200. I also bought the A100 docking station, wish the Nexus 7 had a docking station.
I haven't rooted the Nexus 7 yet, it is running JB 4.2. Google needs to fix a few bugs before I would recommend 4.2 to anyone.
The biggest difference between the two is the display, the Nexus 7 is really sharp and clear. It's also a lot lighter and thinner, so I find myself carrying it around everywhere with me.
I always thought that I needed a microsd card slot, but 32gb on the Nexus 7 is plenty for what I use it for, and I could always use the OTG usb if I needed. HDMI out is a nice feature to have, but I don't use it very often and never really used the rear camera. So the features that the A100 have that aren't on the Nexus 7 don't really impact me.
Thats about all I can think of, to me the screen and size/weight on the Nexus 7 make the difference.

Whats the battery life on your a100? I think that is one of if not the biggest factor for me wanting to get a Nexus 7. I keep reading that the best you can get is 4-5 hours with the a100 while the Nexus 7 is 6-7 on hard use and even up to 8-9 on light/moderate use.

5 was about the limit on my a100 for my usage, the n7 is easily giving me 7 of the same usage.

Without the issue of $. I would definitely recommend getting a Nexus 7. The main reason is the battery life. Secondly, I would get it for the community. It is great that the A100 community is still active, and I am very grateful to Pio for continuing the rom building effort. However, the nexus 7 has a much larger userbase and therefore a much larger community. With more people hacking on it, it should mean that there will be more mods available and a larger likelihood that future changes will be ported to the platform.

I would definitely go with the Nexus 7. I have had the A100 for one year now. It has been well worth the $189 price I paid. However, I just bought the Nexus 7 with 3G. Here's my take on things.
Nexus 7 Pros
The Tegra 3 is very fast and smooth. Browsing the web on the Nexus 7 is the best browsing experience I've had. It seems to load pages faster than any other device.
It's always great to get the latest android OS without waiting.
The screen is bright and crisp. Viewing angles are great.
The battery lasts 10 hours.
The build quality is excellent.
The 3G option of $299 is excellent.
Lighter and easier to hold.
Nexus 7 Cons
No rear camera and flash.
No HDMI out.
Glass is not gorilla glass. Get a screen protector.
Overall, I much prefer the Nexus 7 over any 7" tablettablet

My first gen Nexus 7 just died on me and its too expensive to fix. Is it worth getting a 2nd gen Nexus 7 or just get a used 1st gen?
My son uses it to watch movies (he's 14). I have a Note 2 and don't ever use the tablet.
What do you guys think?

The 2nd gen N7 is a big upgrade over the first one, in my opinion, and we'll worth the money.

I made that decision a week ago and I'm happy with the 2013. But my old one was doing everything I needed it to. But if its just for your kid to use I'd just get a used 2012 IF you can get a good deal.

For movie watching, the 2013 gives a noticeably better visual and auditory experience, and it's noticeably lighter and more convenient to hold. A new 2013 vs a used 2012 will almost certainly have better battery life, giving him more movie watching time between charges. A used 2012 will certainly work fine, but he'll notice the difference and likely be excited about a new 2013.
The main reason I'd recommend the 2013, though, is that tablets and smartphones (especially those without removable batteries) are generally not made to last. A desktop computer will last LONG after it's technologically obsolete, a quality laptop should give you 5-8 years without crapping out on you, but the likelihood of a tablet or smartphone dying on you in a few years is much higher. It's subjected to rougher conditions and isn't designed for maintenance. Buying a device that may be nearly 1 1/2 years old isn't worth it unless you get a very good deal.

It just turned off one day while copying some files to it and wouldn't come back on. I took it to a repair shop after they "checked" it - I have no idea what they actually did as they kept it for over a week, they said its too expensive to fix. Too expensive as in more than $75.
Thanks for the feedback everyone else. I'll just hold off on getting a tablet for now. My son inherited an almost 2 year old Nexus phone from his older brother and he'll use that for now.
Have any of you considered any other tablet other than the Nexus 7? I can get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8" tablet using my airmiles, but wonder how that compares to a Nexus 7 other than the obvious size difference.
The resolution and pixel density on the Samsung aren't as good as the Nexus 7. I wonder what the user experience is like though. Are those spec differences that much noticeable?

Yes. I've fixed a couple like this. Back cover pops loose with a guitar pick or a credit card. Battery connectors pop loose and the fix is adding a piece of tape. One of the ones I fixed the battery itself was loose and I had to add tape to stop it from flopping around and making itself loose.

I just looked at the the two samsung tablets, I forget their exact names. Note something and the TAB 3.
I liked the more colorful interface, and the wider aspect ratio. One of them has a nice thin bezel all the way around. I like the wider aspect ratio because it gives it a bit more screen height in landscape mode. Which I don't use very much except when something doesn't render very well.
What I didn't like was that they are on older versions of Android, and there is less development for them. And then there is the price difference.
The Note tablet has the S stylus and the cool things it can do, but I know from my Note 2 phone I don't use it.
For me I would have felt like I was paying more and getting less. But I realize that is based on my fairly specific criteria. If I didn't have the Google N7 one of those tablets would be what I would have.

well depends what are you going to use it for
for games, yes
for reading, well because of the high res, yes
listening to music, depends if you use speaker or headphones.
you might if you want to, the changes are a lot of them, my brother owns a old nexus 7, it's good but not comparable to mine.

Hell yes. I could never go back to my old Nexus 7 after buying the new one a few months ago. Everything on it is better: display, sound, performance, battery life, size/weight, etc/etc. I thought I might regret buying it since I already had the other (was wife's really, but she hardly ever used it), but I guarantee it's a MUCH better tablet than the 2012 model. I am very pleased with my new Nexus 7, and bet you will be too!
So u recommend me to sell it? The new Nexus still has the speaker problem? Btw I agree all that u say. I use the tablet for surfing and rarely gaming. I could see a lot of difference in gaming and surfing with the new one? Thx again!
Sent from my awesome Nexus 7 using Dirty Root Box v2.5 & M-Kernel a56!!!
I'm not not sure what this "speaker problem" is you're referring too, the speaker works fine on both my nexus 7s (2012 and 2013 models). But yes, the 2013 model is a solid upgrade. If you primarily use it for web browsing you might not see enough of a difference to justify the upgrade, but if you do much multitasking or play graphic intensive games its worth it for sure.
I can't bring myself to part with my 2012 N7, but since picking up the 2013 it has been resigned to being nothing more than an alarm clock.

You'll notice things look sharper and scrolling feels smoother.
The N7FHD doesn't have the blown speaker problem that some of the old N7's had. And no issues w/ the screen glue popping loose.
However, the N7FHDs can have other problems, including random reboots. I had to return my first one...same apps installed on the old N7 had no issues...the new one developed random reboots in a few days.
Others have said the GPS is flaky and there are multitouch issues. And others have complained the screens are easier to crack because the body flexes more easily because it's thinner.
Just things to be aware of...it is great when it's not flaky though
I read on it mostly too and love the "retina" screen..
I did it and don't regret it. I also had a $50 off coupon for Staples so the 32GB cost me $219+ tax and I sold my original with OEM case for around $150 which helped to reduce the cost of the Nexus 7 (2013). Display is the !main reason to upgrade - it doesn't even compare. There's no way you'll be able to go back to the original after using the display. I loved my original Nexus 7 too and wondered if I would see that much of a difference but the new display is incredible. If you can sell your old one for a decent amount, I'd say do it. I do have some random reboots lately though but the thing boots so quickly that I can tolerate until a fix. Plus I think its because of the ROM I'm running: an unofficial version of CM11. Hope this helps.
Thanks for sharing your experiences guys. I'm just thinking about buy the 2013 model or just wait for the "2014" model. What do you think?
Go for the 2013 model. I wouldn't really consider the 2014 version worth the wait over this one, because the new Nexus 10 hasn't even been established as yet. That's a pretty long wait.
Or, you can do what I did, and spend a little extra money for a warranty. I spent an extra $66 for a 2yr warranty from Radio Shack, and my tab holds its complete value until the day that the warranty ends. Plus, I'm protected from everything, INCLUDING BRICKS! I'm very happy with that.

I got a Nexus 7 (2013) for Christmas (non-LTE, 32gigs), but I'm not sure I want it. I already have an HTC One (Verizon, so who knows if and when I'll get KitKat), and suffice it to say, it's just a better device, spec-wise. The only reason to keep the Nexus 7 is for the tablet form factor and a 3 inch larger screen (which isn't that big of a difference). So I figure I should ask people who know better: What can I do on a tablet (or do more comfortably on a tablet, e.g. such and such game) that I can't do on my super slick HTC One? The only examples I can think of is the Commander option in Battlefield 4 and that Xbox SmartGlass will supposedly be cooler. Please try to convince me to keep the Nexus 7! Any advice is appreciated.
Whether or not you keep it should be up to you. I personally love having both my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7. Yeah my 5 is faster and better on the go, but I like the larger screen when I'm sitting at home or watching movies when I'm out, and the battery naturally lasts a lot longer.
So I'm not going to try talking you into keeping anything, but for some of us 2 devices are better than 1.

Since you already have it, keep it
You can use your tablet when you are at home browsing with wifi and occasionally playing games.
This is what I do with my n7
I have an Optimus G Pro, and an N7. I use them both in conjunction with each other, whether it be through Google sync with documents for college, or just plain watching movies, and browsing the web on the N7.
My OGP has a 5.5inch screen, and still the N7 seems like a monster compared to it. In all fairness, I usually use the NFC capabilities of both devices extensively, whether it be for web pages, or files that need to be transferred. I personally love the combo, and plan on keeping this duo, until the GFlex hit's the United States or Project Ara kicks off,.. Whichever first

This.
I have the HTC One and I jumped on a Nexus 7 deal last month because I found myself using my dad's iPad more than my laptop while around the house. Now, I pretty much exclusively use my Nexus while at home. The One is hands-down the device to take with you if you're and about, but the Nexus is perfect for home use (it even fits in back pocket while walking around my house).
I use my One pretty heavily over the course of a day, so the battery is pretty drained after work. The Nexus can go days on a charge, so it's ready for the trade-off when I get home if haven't kept my phone on a charger. Unless I need to talk to someone, the Nexus covers pretty much all forms of communication. I set up MightyText on my devices so I can text from my Nexus (or browser) through my One.
It's true, the Nexus isn't as well-spec'd as the One, and I'd even say the One's speakers are better, but for the price, screen, performance, dev community, and ergonomics, I feel that the two complement each other extremely well.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!
Of course keep it. Forget the specs, the N7 is a beast and handles everything you toss at it just fine. Plus, you can never have too many cool devices. Case in point- me. Not counting my actual computers, I have a Moto X, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Dell Venue 8 Pro, iPad Mini, and a Microsoft Surface Pro, and I use all of them fairly regularly. The N5 and N7 are the ones I use the most though.
Tbh, n7 looses very little to One performance-wise. I mean if you oc to 1.7 you get pretty much the same performance as the chip set is close to identical.
As everyone else here has been posting out, they're for different situations and uses. The real question is whether or not you feel the need for a tablet.

I just got my Nexus 7 (Christmas present) & really like it so far. It was by far easier to unlock/root/install custom rom & kernel than my htc evo 4g lte. I have an Ultrabook but wanted something smaller when I just wanted to hop on the interwebs or check scores. IMO, you should keep it.

Same here exactly...just today got the Nexus 7 and I already had the HTC One. The One screen is too small for browsing and such for a longer period of time on the couch. The Nexus fills that gap between the One and the stand-alone PC.
You ask this question as if they are similar devices. Keep it! I have both, and it's awesome.

Definitely keep the Nexus 7. You will not regret it. The truth is that a tab!et will open up a new and exciting part of android that you haven't seen yet. I JUST bought a Nexus 7 yesterday and already have a galaxy S4. I do a lot of my work from my phone and I cannot believe I didn't do this earlier. It is an entirely separate class of device and you will! Understand later why I am saying now that a question of either or is not a sensible question. At least give yourself some time with it to elite first. The nexus eerience is quit a bit different t as well. I'm not saying that one is better than the other,,, what I have quick!y realizes is that they are Twp entirely different devices with vastly different purposes,

How can you say that going from 4.7" to 7" isn't a big difference?
It's a massive difference when you're doing tasks that require bigger screens for more comodity such as web browsing, streaming media and playing those games that benefit from bigger screens (specially web browsing and streaming media really).
Also, you already have it, it's not like you have to buy it so I would say keep it. Only reason I would not keep it would be if I didn't really need the 7" form factor and could use the extra cash from selling the Nexus.
Otherwise the Nexus does everything the HTC One does but "better", because of it's bigger screen. Spec wise, I can't believe you see a difference because quite frankly you won't. Maybe on heavier games where a smaller screen tasks the GPU less but other than that, nuh huh.
And for the record, switching to the CleanROM 2.6 that is available here, I got my Antutu score from 20k to 25k which is just the same as the HTC One pretty much.
I would leave the Nexus 7

I had two HTC Ones and a Note 10.1 when I got the original N7 just as a "cheap toy" to play with. Surprisingly, I found that I could find a purpose for a 7" device even though I already had a phone and a 10" tablet. Then I bought a 2013 N7.
...I say keep it. The more gadgets the merrier! :highfive:
I have the One and the Nexus 7. For my use I use the N7 when I'm at home because of NHL Gamecenter/twitter and just general browsing because the phone is too small for extended use. Not something I'd take out with me in public unless I needed to. Both compliment each other well.

I know the Galaxy Nexus is an older phone, but does it hold up well today? I'm looking for a cheaper phone that can do gps and look up stuff over wifi. I'm seeing that I could pick one up on ebay in the $50 range.
The only two experiences I've had with android is my nook color and 2013 nexus 7. The nook is the quite slow. I forget what I have running on the micro sd card. That was something to play with and was only $30 on craigslist. The nexus 7 is quite fast. I got that during the gamestop half off glitch. I'd hope the galaxy nexus would be closer to the nexus 7 than the nook performance wise.
The galaxy nexus would be a big improvement for me considering I'm still using a LG Envy 2. I haven't really had the cash for a smart phone and got by with what I had.
Galaxy Nexus will be just fine for you if you can get it that cheap. GN is not really fast and best smartphone but it will be good update from that LG you own

Thanks for the responses. I'm mainly looking at smart phones right now to find a cheaper android device to carry around. It's kind of hard to find decent tablets in the $100 or less area. Hopefully this phone will do what I need, till I can afford a nexus 5 or something else.
GNex is still going great... If you don't mind a bit of lag in the notification bar and some delay when opening apps. Definitely worth the price though. Other than that it can handle daily requests pretty well.

Make sure to flash good ROM/kernel combo and you are ready to go :highfive:

I can probably stand some lag if it isn't too bad.
I ended up getting one on ebay for $42 after shipping. Just curious, what are the power requirements for the galaxy nexus? Would it use the same cable and charger as my nexus 7? If it does, the only things I would need to pick up would be the case and extended battery. I already picked up some zagg invisible shield screen protectors on clearance from target.
Now I need to figure out what rom I want on it.

I think any microUSB charger beyond 0.5A will charge well. As for ROMs, it's a matter of personal preference, just don't ask us about "best ROM" or something like that.

for my usage it is still coping up good enough and with the development soo good ..i dont mind having this phone for a year more
Hey guys.
So, I was thinking about buying an Android tablet, so, as I am a Nexus 5 owner, my first thought was the Nexus 9, but the thing is just too expensive for me, I want something on the cheap side.
So after thinking for a bit I remembered the N7, it's got great hardware, it runs Lollipop and its freaking cheap. But it's from 2013, which I know its not necessarily a bad thing, so I want your opinion as you actually have the tablet.
Is it still worth buying? Amazon is selling it for $197.
I bought my Nexus 7 eleven months ago. I'm very satisfied with it. If you're planning to root it and unlock the bootloader, you'll be able to update with custom ROMs for quite awhile. If you're planning to run it stock unrooted, you may want to consider a newer tablet.
Yes, I think so. There's one 1 other tablet that can compete in terms of price, support, and price: the LG G Pad 8.4 GPE. Good luck finding one though. I didn't buy my Nexus 7 until this summer and I couldn't be happier.
Updates for the rest of this year, at a minimum. My only issue is with deb updates, which get held up due to LTE. Save yourself some more money by buying a refurb unit.
This may sway you... Check your local Staples store - they're having an unpublished clearance on 2013 Nexus 7. $98 for 16GB or $128 for 32GB. Many stores no longer have stock, but of you can find one it's a great deal.

Definitely gonna check this out. Thanks a lot ?
And thank you all for your quick reply.
I just bought mine like 2 weeks ago.... It was a decent price (before the groupon deal)
and it does exactly what I need it to... which is work dual purpose as a home/car tablet.
Honestly I would have rather had a Nexus 10, just because I am a bit of an HTC fanboy,
But in just home use it's still faster than my HTC One M7. actually.... a lot faster.
Has decent dev support, not so much in the way of car roms/mods but still a good overall tablet.
Im still using my 2012 version
I was really excited for the Nexus 9 but I think it'll be too big and the price point is too high. I have repurchased my Nexus 7 a few times due to dropping and theft. The touchscreen on the Nexus 7 2013 is flaky when using a case or 1-handed operation because of a grounding issue with the device. Using the device 2 handed like normal you will rarely see any issues.
Gaming on the other hand is retarded on the Nexus 7 2013.
I try to play Terraria and it is just a frustrating mess. The dual thumbpad touchscreen controls get confused occasionally and causes me to either shoots or run off in the wrong direction. You have to take both thumbs off to reset it temporarily. Just FYI. This is normal across all Nexus 7 units as far as I have known. Some are more noticeable than others but they all have it. There are some flashable fixes that update the touchscreen firmware to have various degrees of sensitivity to help fix this but nothing is ever fixed completely. The fixes have helped make my tablet more enjoyable to use day-to-day but gaming will never be 100%.
I have purchased a Asus MeMoPad 7 for $20 for my son. A little lackluster tablet but plays games better then my Nexus 7.
Personally I was looking at the Nvidia Shield Tablet with a digitizer pen enabled screen. It seems to have issues of its own. The LG G Tabs, as mentioned above, are really solid tablets. I know you can pick up an LG version (with LG software) for pretty cheap. There isn't much development on that tablet though, unfortunately.
The Nexus 7 2013 is a steal at $128 if you can find one. Very solid unit. If my Nexus 7 2013 broke today, I would look else where.
Its worth every Penny..
Go for it.. I just received mine .. and flashed with the Android 5.0.2. factory image
Its magical

I have had my Nexus 7 2013 for well over a year and I wouldn't replace it for anything. I did break last month when I slipped it into my back pocket like an idiot I sat on it and it broke the screen. Although Asus lost my Nexus for almost a month, it was still covered by its warranty..and they repaired it for free.. I Now use a Galaxy Tab 4 8.0, but its no Nexus.. I like the bigger screen, its the Nexus is still better in every way except there is no Micro SD slot.. I need a device I can carry with me that has a Micro SD.. Hence the use for the Galaxy tab.. But if you'd ask me to choose between the 2.. I'd take the Nexus any day..
If the price is right I don't think you can go far wrong. Internally, it's pretty much a Nexus 4 with a Full HD screen and a much better battery. :highfive:
I've had the LG Gad 8.3 for a day and whilst its a nice piece of kit, the aluminium back is slippery and being that touch bigger, you can't get your hand around it like the Nexus 7. There is also a ton of bloat.
Whilst I'm not convinced by Lollipop on my phone, it runs great on the Nexus 7. :victory:
i bought mine from tweakers.nl for 117 € it was a used one without warranty
