I have (extensively) tested 2 different, brand new, Note II phones (Rogers and Bell) and when the volume is set louder than 1/2 on voice calls they both return somewhat distorted sound due to the speaker itself vibrating, crackling, especially at high pitch or low frequency sounds/voices. The closest comparison - although grossly exaggerated - would be much like a busted speaker (broken membrane), or more like the membrane touching the frame when the sound is too loud. It's not continuous but it rather comes and goes depending on the voice modulation and loudness, and although one may normally overlook it, it gets quite noticeable (and annoying) when paying attention.
On the other hand the very same phones perform exceptionally well when playing any other kinds of sounds (not calls) - YouTube music or voice, Music Player, Pod-casts, Radio, etc - they are all fine, more than fine actually.
Anybody else has noticed that?
P.S. Please don't make comments like "I don't use loudspeaker on calls", or anything alike, I didn't start this for statistical purposes, but rather to figure out whether I bumped into some isolated cases or it's a rather common issue on our Note 2.

I already wrote a post about this. Don't think there's anything wrong with the phones speaker because when playing music, youtube etc..., at the highest volume, there is not crackling happening. I think It has to do with the cellular reception and how the signal gets converted to the speaker. The way the phone handles the calls. Hope a software update can fix this.

That's exactly what I was thinking and, otherwise the reason behind testing myself 2 different Note II on two different networks. The only reason this still bothers me is because I came from an S3 and I was using it the same way, yet NEVER experienced this. On the other hand I know that for marketing purposes Samsung "pushed" the loudness of the loudspeaker on the Note II and while they may have had strict control in digital conversion of the sound files played through various apps, there wasn't much they could do/control about voice (due to multiple network variables).
I have not noticed this on a voice call, however on some games like Angry Birds Star Wars it does this when the volume is all the way up. Glad I am not the only one to notice this. I have the Verizon version of the Note 2. Mine also does not crackle during music play back. Guess its something we are going to have to live with. I even popped the back of the phone off to see if it helped and it did not. IMHO its sad considering how much the device cost. I paid outright for it.
I also hear this anomaly.

One would think with the size of this phone that it would have a nice size speaker that could handle it all without issue.
i had 3 note 2 ..i had to switch them out for various reasons..but all 3 including my current note 2 has the same call problem using the loud speaker..but again music and everything else comes out perfectly fine..just on calls only..so guess its normal and we cant do anything about it..
I also went through 2 Note 2's for this reason and have the same speaker issue. I have friends on Tmobile with same issue as well.

This is odd..... I have never had any problem with voice calls on speaker. Whats really weird is I came from the SGS2 Skyrocket and it had this very same problem, only voice calls on speaker . I was happy when using the Note2 because I no longer had this issue. Maybe it is hardware related, not the speaker but a chip or something
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
Yes, having the same issue here. Went from hunting down Volume + for my G-Nexus to looking for a way to throttle the volume on my Note2's external speaker .
Its like Samsung got tired of people complaing about low volume on some devices so they went the complete other direction and over powered the external speaker.
Sent from my SGH-I317 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
I don't really use speakerphone so... j/k yea I've had that problem, work with Samsung phones all day, and it does seem to be a consistent issue. I'm not familiar with Canadian carriers are those both gsm or is there any cdma in there? I know gsm has weaknesses when it comes to the digital to analog conversion & back.. your voice is converted to digital for backend transmission and back to analog on the other end. Maybe the note has some weakness in this area. It would be interesting to hear anyone's experience with a cdma note though.

Yea, it was weird, when I called my brother from my phone (He has a T-Mo cell phone) his voice was freakin loud and clear! But then when I called our house phone, I couldn't hear a freakin thing. Idk what T-Mobile did to this phone, but they really messed it up. And they messed up my stylus when removing my battery case. T-Mo doesn't give a sh*t about WinMo anymore (not like they ever did).
But otherwise, the phone is a good upgrade from my T-Mo Wing.
And hello everyone! I'm gonna be helping out the community, just like I did with the T-Mobile Wing. You can see what I did for them here: http://thewingster.com/
yeah in call volume sounds very muffled and low compared to the wing...

So, I've been searching and searching, and only found a raphael tweak that wouldn't work. Anyone found that cab?
My in call volume is fine. I am assuming everyone knows you can press the volume up button while on a call and it increases the volume.
Ace nice to see you you have a TP2...can't wait for you to start cooking.

Ok so with all you guys reporting problems and I am not I thought maybe I have been calling t mobile numbers as I can not remember who all is or is not on tmo. So I just called 5 different people who either are on Sprint, Verizon or land lines and my volume is very loud. In fact I could hear the other person without having to have the phone next to my ear. Not exactly sure why you all are having problems.
My touch pro 2 its good i can hear well the outside speaker sound clear and nice its not too loud like other phones i had but the quality its great doesnt sound like some cheap loud phone speakers

No, it's known that the volume sucks. Maybe you have a non-T-Mobile version, but we know it's terrible. We know that. Plain and simple.

I'm thinking maybe a custom ROM might change something, but idk.
Maybe I should use this against T-Mobile for a barganing price on the phone, since I'm a "loyal customer", lol.
I have a T-Mo version TP2 and my incall volume is great. There is only one person I can barely hear on the phone and that's one of my friends but I couldn't hear him with any phone I have so I'm pretty sure it's his phone not mine.

So I guess T-Mobile is distributing faulty phones to some of the users. Not sure how many got the crapy phones though, because only people with problems will complain.

on mine, it's "muffled". Sounds like it either lacks highs... or it's too bassy.
I took my T-Mo TP2 to our local corp-owned store and had my wife call me from her cell; once on my TP2... then on the stores demo TP2 (with both volumes set to max). The audio qualities were identical to each other. So I know the problem is not with my specific unit.
Well to me yes the phone does have a little more bass incall then my last device but I can hear people just fine the volume is good to me. I actually like using the speakerphone more often then not anyways!
One thought though. You may try turning off noise reduction that may take care of that problem. Settings-->Phone-->Advanced tab
I can't say that will fix anything but it might!

Speaker phone doesn't have the best sound quality, but that's aside the point.
My earpeice speaker is literally silent when talking to certain numbers. It's clearly a difference. And no other phone sounds that quite when talking to certain numbers, so it's the Touch Pro 2.
I know the Nexus was released today, and instead of asking questions, I should be out getting it, but I feel that I need to ask this question before I go ahead and get it.
The speaker for the speaker phone and audio playback.....is it really as bad as reviewers say? I only ask because I use the speaker on my phone about 2-3 hours per day listening to podcasts, music and such. As silly as it sounds, it is really high on the make or brake list of the phone.
Also, in this same realm, did the update that is being pushed out doing anything for it? I am just curious if it is actual hardware or just software. I know, with my Touchpad, when running WebOS, sound comes out of the speakers perfectly, but when I boot up the CyanogenMod based XRON ROM on it, it is rather awful and pretty much unusable. So, its obviously a software thing, not a hardware thing.
I don't mind waiting a bit to see if more users have more opinions on it, and worst case scenario, if need be, I wouldn't mind waiting until the Razr gets ICS, or at least the CyanogenMod version of it..
Thanks
I haven't had any issues with audio playback. I'm not entirely sure what issues your referring to either so perhaps you could clarify.
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend it. (coming from a HTC Desire)
There were several places I read it.
This was from this morning (http://tinyurl.com/cv932ov):
Galaxy Nexus speaker blows: The speaker on the Galaxy Nexus is basically useless and one of the worst speakers I have ever used on a phone. It is nearly impossible to use it as a speakerphone and forget about listening to music and podcasts without a headset or external speaker. Some have suggested it might be a software issue and I can only hope so since I can’t even use it with such low volume. The speakers on the iPhone 4S are much better and I have no complaints at all.
I remember both The Cell Phone Junkie and also someone on Android Central mentioning it as well, but with the 2 minutes of searching, I couldn't find it easily on their sites. Its seems people have complained about them being "tinny" and not great at high volumes..
From what it sounds, you have no problems with it at all?
its really not that bad but it improves drastically with the free volume + app

After having a read of that article I'm pretty sure this guy has a biased opinion. Many of these so called issues don't even make sense. For example, better camera (if you look at the example shots hardly any noticeable difference), speaker issue (none of what is stated I can relate to), display too big?(irrelevant, user preference) and 4s being a world phone (doesn't make sense as a GSM gnexus is available).
So basically I don't think this guy really knows what he's talking about. But this is only my opinion
I guess sitting here reading the internet all day at work is going to make my head spin and I should probably just go pick the thing up and actually try it out for myself.
Or, with a bad speaker, I guess that is a way to convince the wife to let me put wifi/bluetooth speakers throughout my house.

Ohh, I agree 100% that the article was written by an Iphone user, designed to draw people from Android to IOS. But, like I mentioned, I have heard it before and figured it was easy enough to ask in the forums about it.
I think most of the reviews have come from the GSM version, to there might be a software upgrade that might have helped it..

Its not bad. Its just not very loud. Shoulda called it quiet speaker.

I never thought my Incredible's speaker was really loud, but it always worked good enough for what I needed. Maybe I just need a Jawbone or some sort of Bluetooth speaker... That would solve all the issues if I couldn't stand using the one on the phone..
speaker is fine, used it all day so far... I'm fairly critical about speakerphones and music, and it sounds fine... no samsung phone has a "great" speaker, but this one is tolerable
I just got two:
Samsung Galaxy S II - Titanium from T-mobile (SGH-T989)
Not rooted, etc...But stock, as they come from t-mobile.
Voice quality is pretty bad on those two units. I can hear the other party muffed. I thought they are on speakerphone or talking thru a headset. Then the person with the other S G II noticed the same issue. I am having hard time understanding the other party in every call. I really got to focus on the conversation
Low voice volume when rocker is on max. It is hard to hear people in street noisy environment.
I talked to T-mo rep and they said that probably the phone is like this, and suggested to go to t-mo store and try one of their units. I wonder if it's the entire batch or the phones are like this.
I am coming from Google Nexus One. I wonder if Ice Cream will solve this issue or cyanogen mod 9. Is it hardware or software issue? Anyone else with similar thoughts?
Honestly, coming from a Sensation, this phone has incredible sound quality and speaker volume.
I think you should warranty both handsets.
I came from the MyTouch 4G... And the SGS2 has such better sound quality than I had with my MyTouch, and I liked the MyTouch... I think you got a bad phone... Two bad phones, if that's possible... Haha
I have the same problem. Sounds like crap. I returned my first one after about 2 days. Got another one and it worked fine for a month or so, yhen the same thing happened. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do now. I can't Stand it.

Yeah i have notice as well
i've been using it for 2+ month now, it's loud and clear

if you put the phone in your pants or jacket pockets often it might be stuffed

Thank you for your input.
I have no problem with my mic. The other party has no problem either, since I talk to different people, and I still have the same result. I have problem with the speaker, or the sound chip. The phones are brand new so no lint/dust in the speaker, or the mic.
I think Samsung does some changes with every different batch. This one is probably just like this. Nothing can be done. The series I am talking is: Samsung Galaxy S II – Titanium for T-Mobile, manufactured in December 2011 (no headphones in the box).
I am sure a lot of other SG2 s are fine.
The volume is on max, when I call someone (before the other party answers) ringing in the speaker is not clear or crisp, since the volume is on max.
I talked to Samsung today 12/21 and they have not hear of the issue. I talked to t-mobile on 12/20 and they have no solution either.
I guess it’s going on craigslist. Probably this will be normal voice quality for other users, and I will downgrade to Nexus S (hardware wise) until some other nexus appears at the end of the next year.

That's what it is. Talk on my phone you'll clearly see the difference. My old Sensation had horrible call quality until I ran the volume + app but then my battery started dying quickly
So I got rid of it & haven't looked back since.
This is someone coming from an unlocked iphone 4 in white (best call quality besides the Galaxy S2)
My GS2 is so clear and loud I never have to worry about hearing other callers no matter where I am. Take both phones back and have the reps at the store exchange them for you.
If they give you grief, have them make calls from your 2 handsets. Make sure they grab a demo phone to compare yours to
same
I have the same exact issue. Just got my phone a few days ago, enjoying Pandora in the car with the AUX input jack...
A call comes in, I answer, and I can't heard a damn thing! I make sure the In Call volume is set to max, still can barely hear the caller. I turn up my stereo...finish the call...then BAM! Pandora is blasting my ears off!
Incredibly frustrating!
sharko, wondering if you were able to get this resolved via exchange...?

Hi,
I have a hearing problem. I am about to buy the Galaxy Nexus, but i would like to know if its in call volume is loud enough, lets compare it to the iPhone 4s, it sounds great. Please share your oppinion.
Thank you
You may not be happy with the call volume currently. At least on my CDMA version it is kind of quiet sometimes depending on who I am talking to. I think I have read this will be addressed in an upcoming firmware update.
It's less than fair. One would think a modern phone from Samsung/flagship phone from Google would not have this issue, but you would be quite wrong.
Hey Guys, I am VERY frustrated with this phone.
I have 2 pairs of awesome aftermarket phones that I have used for years on various phones to make and receive calls: Klipsch s4is and Bose E2s, which have worked on: iphone 4, iphone 4s, nexus one, LG G2x.
I just sold my 4s to get a GS3, and now, the headphones are not recognized by the phone app. WHen I dial out, I cant hear anything, and the mic doesn't register my sounds. There is no option for wired headset in the phone sources section of the phone app (which has a bluetooth option, and a speaker option, but not a wired headset option).
Is there any solution to this? If not, I'm immediately selling. I can't imagine that this is the most popular android device. I'm already dealing with the stock mail app not showing or syncing Exchange sub-folders, which is very, very annoying. Combine that with the headphone issue, and I'm already ready to bail. Please help!

Loyalty? What are you talking about. I'm about quality and features, not loyalty. In fact, to be loyal to a phone sounds completely wacko to me.
I'll repeat for everyone: I just called Samsung tech support. They have confirmed that aftermarket headsets DO NOT WORK ON THIS PHONE.
The also confirmed that: exchange sub-folders DO NOT WORK ON THIS PHONE.
You're telling me that is acceptable on their premier device? That is a joke. I will most definitely be selling this phone for one that supports the most basic, basic functionality.
BTW, I tested the phones on 5 different phones at the ATT and TMO stores and the Samsung kiosk at the mall. The headphones work on none of them. The 2nd tier customer support at Samsung has zero helpful information, and no date to fix. This is pathetic. I'll be getting rid of this phone now. If anyone wants a brand new white 32gb GS3 for TMO with an elago case and screen protector, let me know.

Have you tried them using a non touchwiz rom? That might be a solution
I have the same problem, but it only happens on "3 buttons" headset. If you use "one button" headset, it works fine with S3.
Example: I have Bose MIE2 (universal) and MIE2i (dedicated volume buttons for iPhone).
MIE2 (one button) does not disconnect when making calls, but MIE2i gets disconnected everytime when making call and I have to re-plug to make it work again.
My brother has piece of sh it headphones from Walmart with a built in answer button and mic. It works just fine...

I feel your pain. The first time I realized that my headsets didn't work with the S3 I was baffled. And it sucks that every time I'm listening to music with my earphones and I get a call, I have to pull the phone out and answer the call using the earpiece and mic on the phone. Totally stupid and frustrating. I hope it gets fixed soon. It's also really funny how the buttons work (one, not 3 on 3-button headsets like mine) to pause and skip tracks but the mic doesn't. Stupid.
On the Exchange Folders front, all folders do show up. The way I access them (I have multiple exchange accounts set up) is to hit the account drop down and then tap on show all folders. So the Samsung support person you talked to was wrong on that front.

Secondly, bluetooth? i don't use bluetooth. i use high grade wired earphones with mic: Klipsch and Bose. THE DEVICE DOESN'T SUPPORT THEM.

My original Android wired headphones (that came with the Nexus One) work perfectly with the T-Mobile SGSIII to play music and make/receive calls. The call comes in, the music pauses and I answer the call, talk to the caller, hear them perfectly and end the call using the headset button. There something wrong with either your headset (I'm leaning in this direction) or your phone.

Maybe the headphones you are using are only for iphone?

I have used wired and BT headphones from 3 different companies and I can listen to music and make calls with all of them.

I have klipsch 4S Androids and they work fantastic on my SGS3. Personally, I love the headset and the Mic on it works great. I know klipsch say the iPhone ones don't work on android. But I agree, you should buy a different phone. You must like what you buy when you spend on a top of the line phone.
