[Q] using Google Voice phone number without Sprint service - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi!
I just got a new S3. I'm on Sprint but don't want to activate the phone until Jan. My current phone is fine. I have good wifi and have been really enjoying everything this guy can do. I have two Google Voice numbers from the start of Grand Central. Is there anyway I can make a wifi call via my Google voice numbers?
I DLed the Google voice app, but since i guess it knows this is a Sprint phone, it wants to mind meld the numbers. It won't let me complete the set-up.
I realize this may be a recent development with Google/Sprint.
Any thoughts, or workarounds?
Thanks
Max

I'll answer my own question incase someone else may want to do this. I Used this:
Can't include the URL but its on Google Play
Groove IP
Installed it, entered my GV user/pass and it worked!!!

Sipdroid works too

Google Voice problems with ICS

I have the galaxy nexus on verizon and i can't seem to get the google voice to work on it. What I mean by that is that I use google voice for my voicemail. and right now i can't use it.
Wrong section.
However, you have to go to http://voice.google.com and setup voice mail there. Have to dial *73[GV#] (or similar) on your phone and set it to use GV as your VM provider. Works fine on my phone.
Then it must be your phone because Mine works PERFECT WITH ANY ROM

Can you be a little more specific about the issue?
If it's just setting up voicemail, go to voice.google.com on a computer, click your phone number, click the configure voicemail link next to the phone entry. It should show exactly what number to dial on your phone to set it up for GVoice.
And yes, this should be in the Q & A forum. Maybe a mod will be kind enough to move the thread for you...
I'm curious ad to how he posted here with only 8 posts?

in the past with my 6 other android phones. i could just go into my phone settings and switch from carrier voicemail to google voice and i would be able to get voicemail in text form and also it would be stored on my google voice account.
now i can't access my voicemail. and even if i go on google voice on my computer the voicemails don't show up in my inbox. i have had this phone since 12-15-2011 and that was the last day i got a voicemail on google voice. when i set this phone up i have not got a google voice mail anymore. I went through the same steps as all my other phones. but for some reason it must work differently with verizon.
i'm an android developer. why wouldn't i be able to post?
*72 worked. thanks everyone

Typically it won't let you post in the dev section until you have 10 posts (because of threads like this). You had 8 when you posted here.

If you're coming from Sprint, you have to manually configure the phone for Google Voice as a VM client. Sprint allows GV to be automatically configured when you sign on to GV with the phone. I'm not sure about T-Mobile or AT&T for configuring GV but ever since GV came out, you've had to manually configure it for Verizon.
Per Google Voice Help Center:
If you are having trouble configuring Google Voice as your voicemail service on Verizon you can make the switch manually by dialing these three activation codes:
*71[Your Google Voice number]
*90[Your Google Voice number]
*92[Your Google Voice number]

[Q] Problem with Receiving/Retrieving Voicemail on GSM GNex Using AT&T

***** FIXED ***** CALLED AT&T TO RESET VOICEMAIL ***** PLEASE REMOVE THREAD *****
I am using a stock GSM GNex, unrooted, and I noticed, when I receive calls, the caller does not go to voicemail and when I attempt to check voicemail, I am told that I do not have a voicemail box. This is a new problem, because before, I had voicemail and I set it up using AT&T. When I long press the number "1" on the dial pad I get a recording that says to enter the phone number of the party you are trying to reach. I enter my phone number and it says that the number is not listed. I can receive and make calls to anyone no problem, but voicemail all of a sudden stopped working. I went into the phone settings and checked the phone number listed as my voicemail number, it is not the same as my regular phone number, so I changed it to my number and I was getting a busy signal when I tried to check my voicemail after that. Any ideas??? I don't think calling AT&T will do me any good as they think I am using a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. Please help, I need to get voicemails if I don't get to the phone in time!!
Thanks
I'm not sure how to fix your problem but, have you tried google voice as your voicemail client? Maybe you can use that instead.
To be honest I want to fix the issue and I don't want to use Google Voice. When I did a search before posting this I read a lot of people were using that service, but I want to get the real problem fixed. Thanks though.
Does anyone think the problem could be because I have a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket as my main phone on my plan, and that phone uses visual voicemail? And somehow now the phone won't activate voicemail because of that? When I dial my number and call myself, I get a busy tone.
1) Your VM number is either incorrectly programmed into the phone, or whoever set up your account didn't provision you with the VM feature. Call your carrier, they can verify with you whether your phone is correct or it's their system. No one on XDA can't help you with a shortcut.
2) Get Google Voice. Carrier VM systems are utter crap by comparison. That is the "real" solution to your "real problem".
The voicemail number is the same as it was when I set it up the first time. BTW, using Google Voice is not the "real" solution to my "real problem". If you don't know the answer to the question or you think no one else here will, you don't have to emphasize your love of Google Voice, I just don't want to use it so I am trying to figure out how to fix it. Thank you.
Oh, and maybe you should change your user name if you hate AT&T so much.

Problems with google voice on CM7 Droid Incredible

My gf's phone has been having some issues with google voice for awhile now. She's always wanted the stock incredible VVM back, but no one's ever been able to find it on other forums. If anyone has the stock VVM for the phone, I think she would like that better.
If not...
Her issue is that whenever someone calls her phone it always has different responses. Some people call and say the number is unavailable, others say it asks for her subscriber number. I've called three times now and i've had those two errors along with one that actually got through. The problem is that she isn't receiving all her calls, which anyone on this forum can attest that this is a MAJOR issue, especially while she hunts for jobs. If ANYONE can figure out a solution to this problem it would be awesome. I've searched the web for weeks trying to find a solution or even an alternate VVM, but I haven't had any luck.
I just need to figure out one of the following:
- how to get back stock Incredible VVM
- how to fix or permanently get rid of google voice
- find an alternative VVM that works decently and can get past this google voice issue.
Any help would be appreciated...
Phone is Verizon Droid Incredible running CM7 version 7.0.3-inc
What are her Google Voice settings set to? Open GV and navigate to: Menu/More/Making Calls? This setting should be set to "Do not use GV to make calls." I've been using it for about a year and across different roms with absolutely no problem, so this is a surprise to me.
To remove Google Voice (no don't do it, stop...aight I'm done):
If you want to remove GV, sign into her Google account from a computer, along the black Google title bar click on "More" then select GV from the list of Google services. Now, click the gear icon below your account name and there is a "deactivate Google Voicemail on this phone" link in blue. Once you deactivate Google Voice, your Verizon voicemail should be working. I haven't personally done this, cuz I actively use GV. I believe your Verizon voicemail is *86 if you want to access it over the phone. If you want, call Verizon to ensure the second phone (the GV account) number is disconnected from the account as well. Last step requires you to call and test her voicemail to make sure they come through.
P.s. Doesn't every rom include Voicemail Settings under Settings/Call? Does changing your settings there fail as well?

thanks that got rid of it. i also found how to set it back to the carrier voicemail like you said. i like google voice, but that problem not being able to receive calls 50% of the time just kills the functionality of a phone almost. i wish i knew the deeper problem of it so i could make it fully functional. thanks though, this fix will work for now.
Not a problem, sucks that you had that issue arise. Glad I could help.

No Sprint Google Voice Integration

As far as I can tell, if you have and use this feature regularly, you will not be able to use this feature on this phone unless rooting/romming fixes it. Something samsung has done has broken GVoice on ALL galaxy S3 devices. Some googling reveals that several users have reported issues w/ GS3 (sprint customer or not) and google voice.
Where to from here? Do I pack er up and send it all back to amazon? I'm tempted to. I originally wanted the Evo 4GLTE. I'm sure that works perfectly fine with the sprint feature I use the most. Sigh.
Mind elaborating on what's broken? I have gvoice and have had my s3 for about 3 weeks and while I see some issues, I've still been able to fully use it. Its the number I strictly use for work and so far so good.

The sprint integration allows you to use your main number AS a google voice number. That feature no longer works. :\ What it allowed me to do was to send a text from my device, and view/reply to it from the browser google voice interface.
I've deactivated for now and when I attempt to reactivate I get an error. I'm hoping someone chimes in who's had this problem, but it looks like I must be one of the few who converted over. Ugh
I got the same error, but I kept trying it over and over, and it eventually worked. I had an issue with calls not connecting correctly somewhere in between Google and Sprint, so I would get calls that were completely silent. However, I called Sprint and they completely reprogrammed everything on the back end, and I haven't had the problem since.

I spent many hours and shed tears (almost but not really) last night to no avail. Very very weird. You're right though. It finally worked. What I had to do was completely deactivate, reactivate while signed out on my phone. It's back now. Feels good.
Sorry to bug you guys, carry on.

The Sprint integration also works the other way... allowing you to use an original Google Voice (or even GrandCentral) number AS your Sprint Number.
That's how mine is set up, and I can call, text, receive calls, receive texts just as I did on my original Evo 4G without any issues.
Maybe it's just the one way that is screwed up?
If using GVoice, when you get a new phone, you should deactivate GVoice from the web page before switching your phone.
Switch phone, then reactivate.
Kind of a PITA, and neither Sprint nor Google cover swapping devices.

I used to do the same thing back with my Evo 4G.. but this time when I went to activiate my S3, since the website activation was down, I did so over the phone.
When the rep mentioned she was going to test my phone to see if it receives a call and leave a voicemail, I told her I would have to go to Google first and do the remove/reintegrate dance before she tried , and she said "That's no longer needed on the newer phones". She then called my Gvoice number, gvoicemail picked up and was sent to the Google voice app on the phone just like it should have.
Didn't need to touch a thing, I was quite impressed.
I understand what the op is referring to, I think. With Google voice integrated to your Sprint phone, and selecting gvoice to use your Sprint number as the primary number, you are then unable to:1. use the stock messaging app to receive messages, despite selecting 'use stock messenger' for text messages. All messages are now received thru Google voice widget. 2. You are unable to select 'do not disturb' in this configuration either, which I find unacceptable given the dog**** airline I work for and the harassment we receive on the phone (sorry that's another story). I had to skip the integration portion and use gvoice separate from Sprint so I could retain those features. For those of you who are switching back and forth, integrated and not, I found that it can take up to an hour for the network to catch up. So if you switch one way and want to switch immediately back, you may have to wait.

Sprint is currently experiencing a technical difficulty which prevents new users from integrating their Sprint accounts with Google Voice. Also, users who have disabled the integration cannot re-enable Google Voice/Sprint integration at this time.
Please know that they are hard at work on a solution.
Taken from http://support.google.com/voice/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=known_issues.cs
same issues other people are describing. I use my google voice number (not my Sprint number) as the outgoing displayed number. Right now initiating calls from my phone display my sprint number and not my google number. Tried disabling from the web interface and it told me that Sprint was undergoing maintenance. bah.
I just had my SEP changed to the Everything 450 yesterday, and my GV integration stopped working. I went online and tried to reassociate, and I keep getting a back-end failure, and that I need to call Sprint. Is this the same problem that you guys have been experiencing for months? If so, I feel like I am screwed...
yep, had the same prob when I first got my phone about a month ago. When I tried to make a call, my real sprint number would show. I searched through the google voice app to see if I had somehow skipped the settings of "ask everytime I make a call" blah blah, couldnt find it. Then I thought it was something messed up in the new google voice app since I couldnt find my backup (older) google voice app.
I eventually called sprint, and they reprovisioned my phone, and everything was working fine.
I just flashed my phone a few days ago to get root and the freegs3 rom, and now everything is borked again. Which is confusing the hell out of me, because my phone is already reprovisioned, and flashing roms usually do not interfere with such settings. Looks like Im going to have to call sprint again.
I did write down the instructions they gave me the 1st time, but I cant find that either, so much for being organized.
Unable to recieve calls due to Google Voice
So I have a slightly different issue than most have reported. My wifes number would not come through to my phone. Even after multiple reboots and changing all kinds of other settings. I finally deactivated VOICE and she could suddenly call me. The strange thing was it was completely functional for some other numbers to call me, but the wife could not.
Any ideas? Or is Google Voice just pretty much borked across the board for S3 phones right now?
Ok, after flashing a rom, Im having the same probs again. Called Sprint to reprovision, and they told me its an Google Voice outtage, which I know cant be right cause this thread would be flooded. Im convinced the tech isnt techy. After he gave me this ##code, my phone updated profile, and updated prl. Now, my internet isnt working at all, 3g or 4g. He said he would call back in 2 hours, and said the systems should be up no later than 1pm tomorrow. I called to get google voice back working, not to loose more functionality of my phone! This isnt acceptable.
So, any other ideas?
I was getting furious with Sprint over this problem... I believe they finally fixed it when they reset my plan completely. Moved me to ED450 from the broken SEP. I can guarantee you the problem is on Sprint's side, and not Google's.

apologies for my injections and slight angle change. I LOVE google voice but can not really use it (use it with groove ip very nice I might at)
my problem is google voice REFUSES to let me turn off voicemail or greatly extend the "answer time" for voicemail.
when routing gvoice to a landline the "delay" factor is very small to near instant. I have no landlines all cellular and the "delay time" to cellular is simply "HUGE"
long enough that I had had my phone ring "momentarily" and just stop. not even enough time for me to pick it up.
what happens? the delay time is SO LONG from when it "connects" to when my phone actually "rings" that the call is transferred to VOICE-MAIL before I can answer it.
that renders it nearly useless for me. ever since google neutered their voice mail (no custom mp3 messages anymore) I just don;t have a use for it AND I want to get my calls. not have to call them back every time.
SO does anyone know how to either turn off voicemail all together on google voice OR extended the "time" it waits before going to voicemail so my phones have a chance to RING longer IE so I can answer them.?

Yes this is an issue with ATT stock rom. Annoying but workaround is to use Google Voice to check outgoing call log
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
Just upgraded to JB last night on ATT, using GV 0.4.2.66. Phone has never been rooted, stock ATT always. Problem still exists - place a call and the log shows the relay number, not the actual dialed number. Weirdly, back in August I think, after a bout of uninstalling/reinstalling GV, it worked perfectly for a while. Then some unnoticed update broke it and it started storing relay numbers in log again, and hasn't worked since.
As I understand from the MANY other threads out there on this issue, the problem lies with Samsung and their dialer not talking to GV properly. No-one has yet to have any help from Samsung, but the hope was JB would fix it.
Nope. I use GV all the time, so this is practically a deal-breaker for me
What are the options here ? Is it possible to use the stock JB dialer instead of the Samsung Touchwiz one ? I'll root and put in a different ROM if I have to ...
Thanks -
Google Voice stores relay number in call log, not called number
Is anyone out there using google voice with the S3 (on ATT) ? Have you gotten it to store the actual number you called rather than the damn GV relay number ? This is one of the most popular phones out there, and there are a metric ton of people using GV - surely someone has it working cleanly ?
It's frustrating. No workee for me either. Can't redial.
Actually, I wish Google supported GV more. No APIs, so many things can't be done due to using GV messaging.
According to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35616192&postcount=29
Some users (on Verizon?) are seeing it work correctly. This leads me to believe that some builds of 4.1.1 for the S3 may have this functioning correctly.
Some questions:
Does anyone know of any ROMs for the S3 that have the correct behavior with Google voice that work on ATT?
Can we take the dialer from the Verizon S3 and use it on an ATT S3?
Any other suggestions for resolution?

Thanks for pointing it out.
Looks like it is new to market. No reviews. ANd the link to the developer's web page appears to be broken.
I'll keep an eye on it and may try it later.
Would be nice if there were a limited time free version to check out.
I'm running Liquid Smooth rom based on JB 4.1.2 and my GV is working great. I noticed your issue on other roms that I test drove but I never did any troubleshooting to find out why it was happening.

I need google voice also, I have tried and flashed numerous roms, this is a google problem for sure, but this rom here, is stock and it displays the correct caller info everytime, been running this rom for 4-5 days, all #'s are listed correctly....
You can keep looking for an answer as I did, and it will come up with the same issue, google+samsung....quit wasting time and use this link...

Hope this helps, hit thanks button....good luck. BTW the newest version of google voice has issues, revert back to version before the one listed, or you will see some more issues....DO NOT TRY THAT google callback app crap...worthless...
Stock 4.1.1 was showing the routing numbers for GV in the call log, but I've flashed CM10 and the call log is showing the correct contact numbers rather than the routing numbers.

FYI...Jumpsquares is the developer of the app, it appears. He has not responded back here to my response above, so I'm assuming he is not paying any attention to this thread. Just dropped in long enough to advertise.
That being said I am happy with my stock/rooted Rom, and decided it would be easier to spend the $2 on his app than installing a whole new different ROM and reconfiguring everything. But after install, it needs email and password; it would not accept it and move on.
I unstalled for refund. Sent him an email to see what hes replies with. Will post back here if there is any progress.
