Must i remove CWM and SU user in order to apply the update properly?

Pardon my ignorance , but this is my first android device , with my first OTA update .. I searched high and low for methods of removing CWM but i''m confused, i saw methods involving using looper.zip , deleting /system/hijack/.. or using mobile odin to install the OTA . I couldnt find looper.zip anywhere, not even on clockworkmod.com . Which method will allow me to keep all my data ?
Thanks for helping this noob.
I just tried Mobile Odin , but same results.. update failed. What can i do?
So it fails when you try flashing stock recovery through odin, not really sure but this maybe you have to flash stock recovery and stock rom for the ota to work. This would cause you to lose your data, there's a thread about how to root a t999v try asking there

The phone is rooted already, and i would really like to save my data. What is the best way to remove CWM ? Can i just deleted the files from my phone using ES file explorer + root access ?
Damn I seem to be in the same boat here. Mind you, I do have some apps (bloatware) frozen and even uninstalled. I think that this might be causing the problem. However, Titanium Backup seems to be hanging when I try to reinstall from my backups dammit!
Use kies. Download from samsung and follw directions and it should download and install it for you.

I know it would work but UCK....I hate Kies. It installs a bunch of crap on your PC.
By the way, THIS IS NOT AN UPDATE TO JB!! Those are merely bug fixes for ICS. It will update from T999VVLALE6 to T999VVLALH2. Lets just say "I have my sources".

91 % discharging , 15m47sec on battery , screen is at 61% , and cell standby is 12%, i seem to recall the cell standby always being much higher, so maybe they did change the framework.
Updating via kies worked, it removed CWM and SU . Still Android 4.0.4 , but with brightness in notification bar.
Touch screen issues still persist in games like Worms, where after a moment they do not respond at all anymore.
T999VVLALH2
Not really worth the update.
In case anyone is having problems still or doesn't want to update through kies you can download the fw from the link below to install with odin.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&model=SGH-T999V&pcode=0&os=1&type=1#firmware
You have to register though.
Also appears to only be out for Videotron and Mobilicity.
If anyone has updated and rooted (or even if you havent updated yet) and is willing to grab a copy of the modem let me know.
I'm still looking for both the original and the updated ones from both Mobilicity and Videotron.
Thanks!

Hey thanks alot for those links! I hate Kies and there's no way I was gonna install it on my fresh Win 7 install!
Since it's the first time I'll be updating through Odin, could you tell me if my root and CWM will be preserved? By the way I installed Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
CWM will not. It will write its updated stock recovery. I have had both success and failure with ota rootkeeper, but I probably did something wrong when it failed. Should work for you though, just dont wipe data/factory reset before restoring root. Many others reported it working btw.
If you do lose root it shouldnt be a ptoblem to reroot the same way you did the first time.

So I was happy to read the Tmo GS3 finally getting JB and even happier when my phone pulled it.
However I cannot get it to install.
I'm full stock ROM. I did root via "debugfs-based Root for Galaxy S III"
The first time it failed I remembered I had programs frozen.
Unfroze them, still failed.
So I uninstalled my SuperUser app and told it to remove root.
Both Root Checker and Titanium Backup show no root access.
Update still fails.
Am I missing a step here? Or am I looking at resetting the phone to update it?
Are you updating via OTA or kies. Kies works after root. OTA not so much

OTA.
Going through the settings and telling to check (pull) the update.
Was unaware root broke that :\
I take it even though I'm not not rooted it does not matter.

Also tried with debug on and off, but Kies complains when it's off.
So I know it sees it, but does nothing when debug is on.

Ugh, I cant stand kies, personally. Never use it. Imo there is a much better, safer, nore efficient method.
You are rooted so im assuming you want to stay that way correct?
Go to the firmware thread in my sig and towards the top of the op you will see a section called root66.
Download the latest root66 firmware. Extract the file using 7zip, it should be a .tar.md5 file.
You will use Odin to flash this. If you arennt familiar with Odin, go to the 2nd post to download the latest vrrsion, 3.07. Below that you will find instructions for many different methods, find the flash in Odin one and follow the steps.
The root66 firmware is identical to the stock released by T-Mobile, except it comes pre-rooted, so you wont have to worry bout it after!
Good luck whichever way you go!

Op of that thread will tell you to do exactly what I just did a post or so ago. Just sayin that you should update your firmware before flashing custom roms.
Not required, but recommended for running the jb roms. Otherwise you dont get the full update.
Firmware via odin will update 10 partitions, custom roms only 2-3 on average.

Actually just did a factory reset to try and get the update, still fails.

Your way seems to be what I'm looking for.
Stock with root. Really have no interest in 3rd party ROM's unless it's Nexus style vanilla.

Tried with my laptop, still failed.
For whatever reason, stock rooted then unrooted ROM did not want to be updated either way.
Ended up going with the root66 JB option and ODIN.
Honestly was trying to avoid it, but it was really no hassle and the deed has been done.
Now to get back to restoring everything.
Ok so I just bought a s3 on craigslist for 250 that was only used for a week or so. The phone is perfect in All aspects. The morning after I bought it I got an ota for JB. So I went ahead and installed. Now a couple of days later im Trying to root. I can get into download mode and connect to odin install the cwm tar and all goes good odin does its thing and says its has passed. Next I go to get into cwm recovery and it takes me to stock android recovery and wont let me install super user. Ive tried several other tar files hoping they we just bad downloads. My flash counter is at 7 now. Ive looked everywhere I can think of for a fix and find a lot of other things that point in a certain dirrection but I am unsure of which way to go. Any help would be great.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
my solution was just to bite the bullet, and odin a full image that was already rooted. Takes a while, but solved my issues.
Uncheck auto reboot in Odin before you flash the tar file, once it's done, unplug your device, and boot straight into cwm recovery, volume up home and power, flash su, reboot, done.

Which image did u flash.
I also tryed the other sugstion and no luck
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I would recommend root66 if you just want stock with root injected, with no counter trips. From there you can CWM and play. Enjoy!

If you just odin the cwm tar I dont think it will include the su files. You will need to flash a zip containing the binaries

Try rooting your phone again via Root66 that is much easier than that + its a updated version of rooting and am assuming that recently you just got your phone?
and if your gonna root it again go for the JB version the pre-rooted one.

Use this guide can't fail. Remember to unchecked reboot on Odin. Or you will never have root. Cause when it reboot it reflashes stock recovery u need to flash su before you let it reboot. So after you install cwr with Odin remove battery and boot into recovery and flash su. And ur good to go.

Ive looked thru the forums i apologize if i missed it. Ive got a sprint samsung galaxy note 2 running 4.3 ive tried to root and install a custom recovery using the toolkit, but it doesnt seem to take the custom recovery. if anybody could please help me.
I haven't tried rooting since 4.1.2, but I used ToolKit to root and it installed a custom recovery. From there, I just flashed the recovery I preferred to use. Maybe be worth while try using ToolKit. I believe there is an option to just install new recovery.

So i know ive gotta flash one of these but which one? Sprint Samsung galaxy note 2 4.3
which ever one you prefer first. I use TWRP. Some use Philz, which is based on TWRP. From what I've read, it may be good idea to go with Philz over TWRP when and after converting to Android 4.3; something about TWRP not backing up or restoring correctly. Obviously there is still ClockWorkMod (CWM). I can't attest to it because I haven't used it in over two years.
Odin doesn't work either.....I've been having the same problem. Been wanting to root my note 2 for some time now but to no avail.
