Use as galaxy player? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all I have a question about my Epic
I am currently running rooted Epic W/CM10
And I want to use the Epic just as a player...
What can be taken out the system file as far as apps
and if not is there a flashable zip where I can force the galaxy player 5.0 or something of that nature?
I notice the battery drain and its crazy how fast it drains.
Is there a simple rom I can run with voodoo because I see its specificaly for CM9/CM10? Any help???

Almost every gb and froyo kernel has voodoo sound baked in... I suggest going with the peoples rom (which uses a variation of the samurai kernel, which has voodoo sound) as far as removing system files, anything phone and sms related can go if only wanting to use as a wifi/music player...

...Why not simply airplane mode dude?
Sent from my Incredible S using xda premium

I have a captivate that I use in airplane mode and it lasts for days. Turning off the radios and gps really helps. I also run cm9.

I used the file found in this link and a recent cm10 nightly to set up my daughter. I disabled a few more things myself, but this was a good start.

Mod that lets you change songs with volume rocker

Hey guys,
I've seen this mod for other phones, does anyone know if there's one available for the Epic 4G Touch? It would be spectacularly helpful for when I'm listening to music in the car.
Thanks!
Unnamed ROM has it built in. Works with every music app according to the developer.

Very cool thanks. Do you know if the mod itself is available to use with other ROM's? I was using MidnightROM and switched to Unnamed recently and I'm not super fond of it in comparison. I wanted to try some other ROM's but this particular mod is super handy for me.

It's part of the framework so probably not.
I know what you mean though. I used this with CM7 on my EVO and loved it. I'm glad to have it back again. I've searched high & low on the market for an app to do this and found nothing that does this quite the same.

Pimp my Rom

I came across this interesting app/tweak.
It's supposed to be universal, I am downloading now and will update my finding. Anyone else tried this?

Read about it on Lifehacker, how's it working out for you?
This is pretty interesting, might give it a try.
Nice. Downloading to give a try. I thought I saw some devs talking about incorporating this into some ROMs?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Weird. So it could actually work on a TW ROM?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
So has anyone tested this yet?
Tried it on cm9 (Shabby's latest nightly). Some things work, others don't and some will cause the script to hang. It looks like the build.prop tweaks applied and the init.d items copied to the appropriate folder, though I really can't notice a whole heaping difference myself so I don't know if they actually did anything, and the script itself ran out of the box. The not working list looks to consist of things that probably just need a little E4GT love from our devs to button everything up straight. And (at least for me) installing the Smart Stay app froze the whole process but after a reboot I found that it installed the app.
Just my .02¢, others could probably give a much better run down but I just wanted to play with it so it only seemed right to share what I noticed.
Props to the Dev and OP. I'm very fond of this idea, and thankful it was shared.
UPDATED: OK so I got bored and tried it on PA 2.16 and got a little better luck (ie didn't freeze once and actually installed everything I had selected.)
I'm also on PA and it doesn't cripple anything, but I don't see a very dramatic difference in much of the overall operation. I was hoping it'd help battery life but it seems no different. The Sony music player is kind of cool, and the CPU governors seem to kick in. I guess one would have to really dig in to see the difference. But I'm stoked on this kind of mod coming out.

Another update: I've tried it on aosp jb and ics and touchwiz ics. Still no huge differences anywhere on any rom but it's useful to add beats and a file manager on roms that dont have one out of the box amongst other things. I hope to see this come out of development strong as it's a nice concept
I've noticed more steady battery life.

Which tweaks did you use, if you remember? Ver 2.0 has had a small improvement over the original so maybe I'm just not paying close enough attention. I must say the update alone makes this worth trying once.

Just installed this.. The installation went well.. Going to give it a few cycles to see some results

This seems promising. I can't speak to any battery life improvement yet but the phone does feel snappier.
I installed v2 and here is my find running few tweaks.
Browser seems a bit faster
Touch input seems more accurate and responsive
Battery is hard to tell but maybe added 30mins extra screen on time
I flashed sony music and beats, but I can't find them... not sure whats up lol
Regardless, everything seems a bit more responsive?
Smartstay is quite handy. Especially for pron

Sounds like a bad install towards the end. Ive noticed I have much better luck using it after I've already booted into the ROM for a few minutes. Just reboot recovery, pimp, and reboot

I've only ever gotten the Awesome Beats app from Pimp my Rom, which is just a modded DSP manager. The Sony apps are a music player and gallery, which are pretty nicely polished, with quite a few addons for them. What is this acid audio app you mentioned? Not that I'm doubting you, I've just never run across it so I'd like to check it out.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City 1.0.1 s3 i747 at & t

friends of this great forum:
as you will have released version 1.0.1 of the game Grand Theft Auto Vice City and want to know if they installed this great game, had no problems, I ask this because I downloaded the 1.0.0 again and it was a mess, as did not enter the game on my s3 i747 and could not leave the game, because I had to go to task manager to close the application.
I ask please that you installed in your Samsung i747 S3 tell me if it works or not the game, because I'm intimidated to lose games not work on my S3 i747 from at & t.
thanks for reply and greetings.

Driving controls are very sluggish. Game can not perfectly run on extreme values of display settings. If only they can fix the delayed touch controls.

Horribly laggy when driving on CM10.1, unplayable in fact. Sad panda! It seems like it's working flawlessly even on the GS2
I have a weird glitch with my installation, I tried everything to fix it in the settings, tried clearing memory, tried killing and restricting apps from running in the background but nothing works to fix this. can somebody help me?
I've attached a couple pics to shed light on this crap...
Thanks

yeah on touchwiz based roms it works just fine. on cm10xx and aokp roms, driving is obsolete and will not even show any graphics.
Everything works fine for me. No lag or anything. And I'm also not running touch wiz.

Why does it lag?

Why does the GN lag so much when installing a app from the playstore?
And can something be done that i can use the device while a app gets installed?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I think it's because Android is just not so optimized, it lags on almost every debice
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
On my stock optimus2x or anfriends note 2 there is not the slightest lag when installing a app.
GN basicly locks up so i doubt its android somehow...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Because the CPU takes a hit with processing the install (unpacking resources, etc). OMAP CPUs are very open for development/modding compared to other CPUs, but the side effect is they're not quite as powerful due to avoiding some libraries and hardware techniques other CPUs might use that are proprietary in certain cases.

Personally I don't have that problem with my gnex . Its smooth as ever but, I don't leave unused apps using resources like fb or other rogue apps.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
so i went back to stock (with the exact same apps as before) and this is a huge difference, no lag at all, no even when installing apps from the playstore. no need for any seeder or lagfix hack to get the device working as it should.
so now the question is wether the lag apears as well after some time or if the lag thing is only present in custom roms. and if so then the question is why.
i will keep my device on stock for some weeks to see how it goes.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It will almost certainly come back, and it's not only present in custom ROMs. A clean install of a custom ROM should result in the same speed boost as a clean install of a stock ROM. See the following thread:
Nexus Storage Performance Over Time & TRIM
I would also say it depends on what governor and I/O scheduler you use. I would say try the stock settings of interactive and cfq.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
as far as i can remember all custom roms literaly froze when a app was installed. so far i have not seen this on stock and i dont think that is a mather of trim or sheduler/governor.
but i will find out soon enough i guess...
Edit: forgot to ask, you are on a custom rom and your device doesnt freeze while installing apps?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I have tried 3-4 ROMs so far and never faced this problem.
While downloading apps, I can parallely do other tasks, play games, make and receive calls.
And if this helps, My GNex is 7 months old.

I agree. I'm using XENON HD Stable-4.0 Franco kernel r364. Ever since dumping the stock ROM, the Play Store performance is painfully slow. I have 276 apps on my Galaxy Nexus and the Play Store seems to be the only app that impairs the phone's performance so dramatically.
As a previous poster said, a lot has to happen when installing an app. So I tear myself away from my beloved comm dev from a few minutes and do something else. Like relate to my wife

Inactive user rom

Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
What do you mean by "inactive"? Like the phone is no longer being used for calling/texting and is not on a contract of any sort?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
Exactly.. just looking for a ROM to use as a tablet for games n such.. one that takes up little space.. right now I'm on slim ROMs...
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Honestly, that's probably the smallest ROM you'll get, you can remove a lot of stuff from the system like ringtones, notification sounds, etc.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I let the kids play with my spare Epic as a gaming device. Just keep it in airplane mode w/ wifi enabled. Then I hide the phone app in the launcher so they're not opening it by accident.
I doubt any reasonable amount of space would be recovered by removing the phone app altogether.
Random king made a WiFi only version of thunder hawk... I had it somewhere if I find it I'll happily spread the goods.
Edit
http://goo.im/devs/RandomKing/epic4g/mods/ThunderHawk-WifiOnly.zip
Dudes ROMs were pretty intense. My one e4g ran beautifully on thunderhawk.
