4.2 OTA Update; Will I lose Root? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just got an "update is ready" message pop-up on screen; I'm rooted, Busybox'd and have de-bloated my set-up.. If I do the OTA update will I lose my Root etc?
Any help would be great.
Thanks!

You will lose root. I did when I upgraded my device from 4.1.2 to 4.2. I just flashed the attached zip and I got rooted. I lost it again when I later upgraded to 4.2.1 but same as before you can use the same zip to get rooted again.

I lost root after the update. Can I use the toolkit to regain boot?

I tried to do it but it came up with the Droid on his back with a /!\ symbol. It restarted the phone and said "Unlocked bootloader! Please Re-Lock" I'll relock it today and try to update :crying:

OTA

anyone take the ota yet http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11/07/sprint-galaxy-note-ii-gets-its-first-ota-update-build-l900vpaljc-brings-multi-window-and-more/ Will it kill root?
I think it might take a while to trickle down through all the servers. you won't know if it kills root until someone gets it and tries it

A guy I work with suggested downloading OTA Rootkeeper and using that to not lose root, I'm hoping that works
I never understood why make a big fuss over losing root? How hard was it to get root in the first place?

Are you on cwm or twrp? Then you can just wait for someone to pull it and make it flashable with root already added
as long as i am unrooted and have a stock bootloader, i'll receive the OTA correct?

[Q] OTA update breaking root

Hello
I have rooted my Galaxy Note II and installed CWM for the recovery. I am also running a stock ROM. There is a new OTA update, and before I am going to do it, quick question: when I update, will I still have root access or will it break it somehow? I'm running the Stock 4.1.1
Flash stock recovery..so u can get ota then just root again..rooting takes 3 seconds

Hello,
I too had root, CWM recovery and stock ROM on my note 2 and was able to successfully take the OTA update to 4.1.2 and retain root access. I obviously have a stock recovery now after the upgrade but root is still present! I did have SuperSU (paid for version) that has the Survive OTA update mode and it worked like a charm! One thing to note is that it was not obvious at first that root was retained.
Immediately after the update, my root access failed when trying to use Titanium backup. Also, other apps requiring root access were failing as well. So, I went into SuperSU and ticked the "enable Super User" mode off and then on again and rebooted the phone.
After the reboot I noticed that Titanium Backup had root access and then verified the rest of my apps were working as well.
Three cheers to the creators of these wonderful programs.....I'm very glad I paid for the updates and got the added functionality!!
Good luck to all and hopefully it works as well for you as it did for me!!

ATT Galaxy S3 is getting the 4.1.2 update today

I am downloading it here in Chicago LTE right now

I'm here looking at this thread, and feeling so indifferent about this release since I gave up on waiting for AT&T
Is there an official ODIN download available as yet?
Will probably require at least a bootloader update for CM10.1 if they add it to the assert checker.
Can you verify modem/baseband number? This should correspond to bootloader number as well.
Thread duplicate. ..

Can't get OTA updates

So a couple of weeks ago, I installed a font app which changes the font. When it rebooted, the device was bricked... So I went through the long and tedious process of DL the firmware and flashing stock to my device then getting my phone back to the original state since everything was wiped... Now I have a problem, I can't get ota updates cause it says my device is modified. And I don't understand cause I'm fully stock!!! Check the pictures out with my phone's info but please help.

Stock ROM and recovery? Reset flash counter?
Good thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336392
There's no OTA update right now anyway.
Yes it's stock ROM and recovery. And no I did not reset flash counter. To do that, it would have to root again right?

Yeah just root only with CF Auto Root, run TA and go into SuperSU app and choose "Full Unroot" option.
Hey again.. I found some time to do this.. Re-rooted then used TA, went to download mode and it said "samsung official" then went to super su to un-root. After that I went to check in about device and it still says I'm on custom!!! Wtf!

[Q] What will happen to my rooted/unlocked stock i317 with ATT OTA 4.4?

I have an ATT i317 note 2 that is rooted and unlocked with stock ROM. Att is pushing an update to KK 4.4.2 via OTA.
Does anyone know what happens to my rooted phone if the OTA goes through? Does that "unroot" it?
Is it possible to "turn off" this OTA update and prevent it from coming through? I've heard that KK will screw up my apps ability to access my extSD.
Can I do some sort of backup of my current ROM and restore it after the OTA update?
The last time they pushed an OTA to 4.3, it re-locked my phone.
Thanks in advance.

It will unroot your phone but you can root it again and the sd card works fine if you flash a custom rom the ota will go away but since your rooted to do the update I would downgrade to 4.1.1 and do the ota without rooting to get to kitkat ill post a link In a sec on how to do it

If you installed a custom recovery the update won't complete.
But if hes rooted the update won't work either

Right. Both scenerios will kill the update. But in both scenerios you will continue to get the pesky reminder to update.

I haven't installed any recovery, but based on what you said, I won't be trying that route before/after the OTA.
Thanks for your input. It Helped out.
You can't do that after the 4.4 ota something with the bootloader that it won't let you go back but you can do it before as many times as you want

No at least I couldn't get it to I had to go back to 4.1.1 then just keep doing the otas til I hit to 4.4 but when you do the first ota it will freeze at the note 2 screen and will have to flash the mk6 bootloader and it will boot and then do the ota after that and you should be in 4.4 just follow that link exactly and you'll be good to go ive done to get to 4.4 so I know you can do it

So, when I get back to 4.1.1,..then there will be a series of OTA's working it up to 4.4?
The instructions look easy enough. I'll send my note 2 back to the future tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help and your wisdom.
