Hello xda. Yesterday I recieved my galaxy note 2 in the mail and am loving it!!! I have a few problems/questions I couldnt solve nor find in the little crappy manual they give one. There are a number of things I hope someone can help me out with.
I had a htc dhd before this and I loved the ease of access to everything and anything and this im noticing isnt so "fun"
1. I notice I can not see my current running apps in my top bar, fail. Does anyone know how to fix that?
2. I cant figure out how to turn auto correct on....I know you're asking yourself, wow, this guy must be a noob..no, I have searches and cant find it and then I spell stuff like "searches" when I meant searched. ..
3. I want to know how to add, lets say, manage applications shortcut to my main page, cant do that either.
4. Im hating having to hold down the "." Button to access my commas and such. Can I move this option some how?
5. I cant stress enough...auto correct...its pissing me off big time.
6. I cant find out how to add a word to the dictionary
Someone please help me.

There isnt an auto correct as such. Type a word and the stock keyboard gives you some 'choices' as to what it could be your typing. It does learn itself. So, now when I start to type my second name, I only have to type the first 4 letters and it gives me it as a suggestion. If I type live, it suggests live, love or liverpool.

Yeah, kinda agree with that been a pain but you get used to it, or use Swiftkey or another keyboard (although you lose some s-pen functionality. You could also press the SYM to the left of the keyboard.

You dont, it learns them.
Settings>Language and Input>Samsung keyboard>Predictive text>on and select what you want the system to learn from.
You can delete the learned words though, when it suggets a word, touch and hold and it asks if you want to delete it.
There is a tuturial in there too.

Word to all! If you had a htc and are thinking of buying a samsung, dont, this phone is a piece, yea, its smooth, but so is my a$$..... im very disappointed with this phone and will most likely sell it or do a drop test on it. Watch youtube for my test if thats what I decide. If you cant get a phone to auto correct, thats pathetic. Goodbye. If anyone wants to purchase a canadian telus note 2 message me, has 12 hours of use on it. Not interested in this crap anymore.

lots of LOL's.
I had a HTC One X... yeah, good phone but the N2 can do the same as the HOX and some.
Really dont know what your issue is TBH, it would be easy to change the stock keyboard, the only thing that I think you lose is the handwriting recognition in s-pen. For that, it would take like 2 seconds to swap back to stock from the top bar. Remember that the stock keyboard has swype... and I find that far more accurate than normal typing. I am finding its getting better the more I use it though. Maybe it just hasnt learnt your words yet?
I only ever used Swiftkey on the HOX but rarely use it on the Note2.
Good luck in finding that perfect phone.... remembering that the stock HTC keyboard isnt that great and you will probably change that for another after a week

Don't know why you're whinging so much. All of your keyboard related issues are fixed by downloading a better keyboard from the market or even just installing the stock android keyboard haha
And in 5 presses I added a shortcut to application manager to my screen lol

Like I said earlier try kid mode from the market. It's kind of a launcher in a way. You set it up so that your kid only has access to certain apps. They can't make calls can't even run the browser unless you allow it. I have it on my phone and I love it.

I was just looking for exactly that. For those that are wondering why a kid would need a smartphone etc., it's not the point. They wouldn't be using it as a smartphone. I have an old SGS1 that I don't see why I couldn't repurpose as a media-player device + for my daughter. An ipod would do the trick but 1) this thing would kick the pants off any ipod I've seen so far capabilities wise (16GB built in, microSD slot up to 32GB, bigger higher resolution screen, play whatever media format you put in it, etc.) and with voodoo sound even the sound quality is better, 2) it's not made by Apple, and 3) I've already got it. I will try the kid mode launcher another poster mentioned below but I think there could be a market for this judging by the amount of kiddie tablets etc. that are on the market now and way cheaper if you already have a device or can pick one up used. Will post back after trying the kid mode deal.
Sounds interesting. Maybe one that is baby proof. So that they can't mess things up like send unwanted messages or delete stuff or make calls. Not so I don't have to watch them but so that I don't have to keep taking it from them
Nova will accomplish all this stuff, or other apps. You just hide apps you don't want them using. Like market, system apps... Etc. The only issue would be browser. But I'm sure that could be dealt with also. And yeah.... If they are sharing the parents phone... What good would a safety rom be when I need my phone. And if it's their phone... It's simple to kid proof. My 5 year old has an s2 we didn't need anymore. It has Netflix, some games, some videos on it.... And just about every thing else is hidden. Never had an issue with her getting into things she shouldn't. As far as games that can lead you to market and purchases.... There's a password for purchases and generally I just get rid of those games.
Anyway.... No, the kids rom would never be made.... But really, once you kid proof your device... That's basically what you have. So there's no point.

..but you're being replaced by the Droid Pro+, a slower, uglier, bulkier phone with a low rez screen.
Even by looking at the picture, you can see how horrible the screen on the Pro is compared to the HOX but that doesnt matter. I need my phone to reply back to texts, jot down notes, and input things in my calendar and i feel that the best, and quickest way to do this would be on a phone with physical keys. Oh and it feels great to have my four menu keys back.
I dont know what it is but i just couldnt get use to the on screen keyboard. Even using different keyboards(swiftkeys, ics keyboard, thumb keyboard, etc) i just found it really frustrating. I still think the iphone has by far the best onscreen keyboard.
Anyways, im not entirely putting the HOX out of comission, I still might use it as a weekend phone but as my daily driver, I'll be using the Pro+ until Motorola releases a better version.
Oh and one more thing..I've been a Treo user for the longest time so I just think I'm just bias towards phones with physical keyboards haha

After going from Sony Ericsson P900 to htc tytn ii to htc touch pro, I didn't think I could ever go without physical keyboard. I was wrong. Once you get used to it, an onscreen keyboard is much faster and definitely more productive because of it.

My wife had the same issue when she went from a real keyboard to an on-screen one.
However, after trying various different one we have settled on Swiftkey 3 beta and now she would never go back.
Give it a little longer and you will see the benefits, hopefully.
Have you tried the keyboard on the 9900? It is heads and tails above any other keyboard I have used the this swift key is the second best.

I stated that this phone was hard for me to adjust to and so far, a few people have actually recommended certain keyboards to try out. They're actually being pretty helpful come to think of it.

No, because this is the XDA Developers forum, not Facebook. These forums are for interesting topics that are informative and useful, not someone's personal opinion about whether a physical keyboard is better than a software one. This forum is for that.
I don't mean to cause offence, but there are A LOT of these kind of threads.
@Op,
Another boring thread about the HOX being bad....
How many of these threads has been opened?
If you don't like it go to the machine you like to my opinion but stop cluttering the board and bother us with this BS.
Post is in the wrong section as well, if you are so full of keyboards and Droid Pro+ you should have tried XDA General section to hit a 'wider audience' with your 'experience'.
Pffff... bye!
OP, for lack of a kinder way to phrase it, and the fact it's been a long day...
Shutup.
If you want to point out serious issues, ways the community can help you with that, then by all means that is what XDA is for.
What it isn't for....is to write a tribute to your One X, saying goodbye to it because you don't like the keyboard.
You can do that in private, just hold it up and say goodbye.
enough with these stupid stupid threads, really the worst part about the HOX
its good reviews and coverage attracted too many newbies to "try" it out
you know i made too new decisions i will never ever again advice and apple fan to buy or try an android...seriously i want me, my family and my friends to enjoy it all on our own

Are you deluding yourself or just not reading the responses?
And... You specified that even with 3rd party keyboards you were not happy so why would I suggest keyboards?
This thread was simply you trolling. I know it, you know it, even the people who were politely making suggestions probably knew it. What kind souls with such humility. Not me, I call it as I see it.
Yet again another pointless thread that will be closed by the mods.
If I don't like anything about ANY phone I have I don't broadcast it to the nation I try and find a solution to the problem. If I can't find one I'll live with it. No doubt there are things you don't like on your replacement, are you gonna broadcast to the world again and get another phone?
Please mods close the thread.

Theres an app called shush that lets you program the phone so it will automatically go silent at certain times of the day that you specify.
I use setting profiles, it lets me set profiles then conditions and actions for each profuile.
It knows when im at any of my offices, at home, asleep, in a meeting (calendar item) by gps, cells, time, lots of other criteria.
Its a little sketchy to program at first, but I have moved my settings to 4 phones now and its really slick. I dont have to remember to flip a switch even.
If you pull down the notification bar there is a tab for silent /vibrate/ normal
Obviously before u holster it

Although I agree 1000%, I can certainly understand of an iphone user who is reluctant to switch again when they have finally got one that "just works"
An engineer friend of mine struggled thru all the pain of a slow/laggy POS android phone with all the asinine work arounds like juice defender/custom kernels etc just to eke out a little more battery life.
Since he is not into customizing the phone AT ALL, you couldn't drag him kicking and screaming back to ANY Android phone at this point..........
Nah, I'm just kidding around. I had a 3GS before my Inspire. It was OK, but that was about it. I don't miss it one bit, but I don't begrudge anyone for wanting simplicity.
No button to switch on the side like the iPhone. But I could also list so many things that the iPhone can't do or lacks compared to the Galaxy S3 so I don't mind that at all.
I have the iPhone 4S too and still enjoy my LTE GS3 over it.
I'm sorry but I think this thread is pointless. He either wants a better all around phone or he wants to stay with his old outdated pos phone. There is no physical button able to mute the phone with the screen off. If that is the dealbreaker he definitely has some issues he needs to work out with himself

I would disagree the OP is asking is there any solution for a specific criteria he has. The reasons behind it maybe questionable but he is still asking does the phone have some functionality he may not know about, which is fine. The whole point of this community is to share and exchange ideas, tips, tricks and educate. There is nothing wrong with someone asking a question about the phone at all many have found features out about their phones that they had no idea it had. What I am struggling with is what your post has at all to offer other than your personal opinion about another phone manufacturer and a potential insult to the OP about his friend. Maybe in the future rather than post something of no value you don't post or post something that has value to others.
-McMex
Coming from a Treo, a while back, I agree about the usefulness of the ringer switch. It is a nice simple, elegant solution and one of the things I miss about the Treo. The best solution I have found is one of the profile managers like someone mentioned. You can set it to silence the phone whenever a calendar appointment has a word you choose like "meet" or "call" or "lunch".

Here is what I don't like:
1. When you wake up the phone from sleep there is a noticeable delay.
2. After you hang up the phone, there is a delay of about 3-4 seconds before you are brought back to the dialer.. Until then you're just shown the "Call ended.." message. Thats quite annoying because you have to wait another 3-4 seconds before re-dialing.
3. MTP.. I have never gotten it to work on this phone. After downloading the official Galaxy Note II drivers from samsungs website all I ever get is "Hardware missing" or something like that. I really miss the plain old USB Mass Storage.
4. When you bring the phone to your ear the screen turns black, (thats good), but after you take it back down to see the screen, there's a gap of about 2 seconds before it turns back on. very annoying.
So these are the 4 things I have noticed that I don't like.

If they are common problems on different phones then that means exactly that, different phones. Not all phones. I'm not trying to be rude but I think all the OP was trying to say is that the four things he listed kinda bothers him, nothing more, nothing less.

Wow OP, you are one spoiled person. All the problems you listed are way too minor to annoy a normal human being.
Download Flipboard and read the news, see how not having food to eat is annoying the rest of the world.

You do realize you're on a cellphone forum and not cnn right?
Hey everyone...stop talking about...well...anything! because other people have problems and therefore yours are no longer valid.

The biggest complain I have with the Note 2 is the stylus not able to control the menu and back buttons.
I agree with you, that is the most annoying thing about this phone by far. It's one of the biggest reasons I don't use the stylus me consistently. Great point.

While I do agree that these problems may be minor: With all due respect, this is a website about mobile devices and development, and this thread is specifically for the issues regarding the user experience of the T-mobile Note 2.
There is nothing to say that the OP did not start a blog for starving families in third world countries on an appropriate website, or that he lacks common sense and or compassion towards major economic problems. . . as is implied by your remark.
Furthermore, problems must be addressed, not ignored. Many minor problems compounded can become a major one, eroding away the cumulative ease of use and overall responsiveness of the user experience.
Many people like myself regard our phones as valuable business tools rather than toys. It is important to have a high performance tool to efficaciously compete in today's "hi-tech" market.
Getting edge only speeds when using it unlocked on AT&T :banghead: yeah theres so little flaws I had to blame something it cant control .... yet.

I didn't like that it sometimes didn't want to charge as A/C...even though it was plugged in the wall it thought it was charging through USB which took for ever. Changed the USB cable and it seems to be working good now. So I had 1 thing I didn't like...not anymore! There's nothing I don't like about this phone! Ha!

Excuse me? Yes, we live in America and can afford nice things. That said, if we are spending $300, or as much as $700 or $800 off contract, we expect these products to continue to improve over time. The intent of this thread was clearly a constructive one. Developers can't know what we want improved if we do not voice our opinions. Get off your moral high horse.
I think the white is too warm or dirty in my taste.
Other than that, I have no complaint.

I have had nothing but Android phones (primarily) since the Nexus One originally came out. And I get bored with things real quick. I know Android is the best mobile OS at the moment but man, I am really getting bored of the same old thing every day and the new BB Z10 looks quite appealing..
Anyways, whats some stuff I could do to hopefully cure my boredness? I know about launchers but Apex, Nova and even GO all kinda look and feel the same. What are some things I could do to spruce them up a bit? I have tried new icons and slightly different arrangements but haven't had much luck.
Any ideas?

if your into designing and artistic stuff...go to mycolorscreen.com and check out some of their homescreens...you can find tutorials or draw inspiration from some of the pages
i often get bored when things settle and i dont flash a rom (with a purpose-new features etc..) or change the look of my homescreens for a while too
I feel the same way. Right now I have my phone exactly the way I want and the things I want running Jedi Masters 10:
1. Free hotspot tethering
2. Working Google Wallet
3. Wifi calling
4. Great speed and good battery life
5. some tweaks like auto-correct samsung keyboard, s-pen keyboard switcher (don't use)
I pretty much don't have anything else I need. The only thing I haven't done is update to the latest LTE firmware. I'm thinking about flashing the new Frosty rom, but it's missing the samsung and google wallet features. I'm sure I can just manually get these features in by tweaking but am just too lazy.
So kinda boring here but in a good way.
I think if you get the z10, it'll give you that couple of weeks of freshness and after that you'll need something new again...that's just the way it is.

Try searching outside the mobile realm, pursue a degree, meet new friends, I mean it's only so much texting, emails, phone calls, and mobile apps can get

Yeah I never noticed they had a section just for tutorials. I'll definitely check that out, thanks.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up for me too, everything is working 100% properly with no bugs but I just want something different. Back in my HTC days I'd probably be bunny hopping between CM and Sense right now lol. But then again, not everything would be working and there would be tons of bugs so..

Not me, android will never bore me. My first smart phone was obviously the first iPhone, and that was boring as hell. I love android and this phone is the best I've ever used, every time I use it, I love it.

go outside and do something? get a hobby? read a book? go pick up on broads?
I guess I should have been more specific, I am bored with the Android. Not bored with my life. Thanks does the suggestions though, bigexpansion.
