[Q] need some help going back to stock - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

OK so i know this info is scattered around, but frankly i am a little confused at this point. i'll start with my situation.
i'm running slick ricks AOKP JB rom. i was on build three for very long, skipping several updates until milestone 1.2. i did a dirty flash (right over build three) and it seemed to work, until i started to have battery issues. my phone would die if i used it for more than a minute anywhere under 60%, and was unable to power back on. upon plugging it in, the battery started charging right back up from 60% or whatever percentage it died at. i blame my dirty flash. i upgraded to 1.3 and it's even worse, it dies anywhere under 90% now.
so, i was thinking i need to just bite the bullet and start from el26 with cwm. but i started to get confused at about this point. if i'm using a jellybean rom, do i need to use "JB Touch-Wiz Based Kernels" or is it okay to flash from el26?
second, it has been very very long since i had to go back to stock and i was just gonna try and start from el26 and see how it went, without bothering yall. i clicked on the link in the sticky thread w/ all the kernels and get redirected to a new repository. can someone confirm that this section is what i want to be using? and the oneclick exes are probably most dummy proof, yes?
thanks in advance guys. i was never very pro at this, and now i'm just in need of some clarification.
edit:
knew i was missing something... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903252 flashing now and i'll report back.

ok. i'm on gingerbread for now. gosh touch wiz is sooo ugly why samsung....

Before you do anything else please pull the battery and try to spin it on a flat surface.
$100 says it spins... and all your problems are due to a bad battery.
Exchange it, replace it.. and those problems will go away.

wow i have been wanting to just throw my phone at a wall for like 2 weeks now. it does spin, and it's noticably bloated looking and i never even thought to look at it like that... OOOMMGGG. haha. ok. so i have a spare battery but it's only 1500 mah so i usually keep it swapped out. going to do some testing here. this is nuts. so its possible i never even truly needed to go back to stock even...
but yea it spins on both sides. my extra is totally flat. that's amazing.
edit:
so i pay the 8 bux a month or whatever, on my bill, thru sprint for the warranty. is the battery covered? anyone know if its worth going to a store to try and get a free replacement?

Go in and show them it spins. Any store supporting TEP should replace it for free. If you have time call ahead and make sure you get that same answer as well as a name to hold accountable. Should avoid most hassles that way.

just reporting in 24 hours later, my spare battery has no issues. it's very likely i never had to go thru the hassle of going back to stock. i'm on slick's 1.3 build again and happy happy happy. hopefully this info helps out anyone else with bizarre power issues. i'm going to go into a sprint shop over the weekend and see if i can't get a free replacement for the samsung battery, i'll let y'all know how that goes.

Legitimately bricked my phone, just want an expert opinion

Running viperROM 5, went to clear my battery stats and hit clear dalvik on accident without realizing it. No big deal, went to boot up phone and it hung at the samsung screen for over 10 minutes so I just thought I would flash back to stock and reflash the ROM. The original reason I went to wipe battery stats was to calibrate my battery, which was almost dead. I switched to a spare that I thought was full, started odin, left the room, and came back to odin saying FAILED. Phone is completely unresponsive, the charge light will not even come on when I plug it into the wall or laptop. The computer does recognize when I plug it into the computer but it doesn't know what it is. Gonna sell it for parts on ebay unless someone here knows something I don't, thanks in advance =/
Even though Odin failed... cant you still get into download mode ?
if you can i recommend using any cable other than the stock one
I dont think your developing anything here so i would say this will get moved to the appropriate thread.
Your battery died. Odin consumes a great deal of battery power. Unfortunately, it failed so you can not charge your battery through your phone. If you get a new battery or charge your battery exteranlly, I bet you can get into download mode again and odin

This is what I was hoping to hear--I'll give it a try, thanks!
Sorry this is in the wrong place, not sure where it should have gone instead >.>
I have heard, though never tried myself so take it as the unfounded rumor that it is, that it is possible to get the phone to boot in some fashion with the battery out of it, then insert the battery while it is on to "jump start" the charging.
I hope I never have to try it because it sounds like it has lots of potential for problems, but if your phone is well and truly dead what do you have to lose?

This actually worked! I can get into download mode, although I don't know if the battery is really charging or not. Either way I'm in good shape, I just don't understand why neither battery would boot into download mode when one of them had about 10% left.
Also this clearly belongs in Q and A, sorry!
Even without the battery as long as your phone is plugged in with the USB it should go into Download mode ... i think
Everything is back up and running, thanks everyone =)

As usual, a claimed brick is FAR FROM a brick, and despite all the notices shouting at them, people continue to spam up the dev section. Come on, people.

[CONFIRMED] Rooting causes LoS

I saw earlier that people were saying that rooting the epic touch 4g may NOT be the cause of LoS. But I'm here to tell you that I only got the LoS after I rooted. All I did was root and install honeycomb battery + crt animation. The LoS was getting ridiculous, so I went back to the stock kernel and I'm LoS free. Just letting you guys know, this IS a root issue and it should be stated clearly for those who are considering rooting. I think it will just cuase a lot of grief for users if they are not properly warned, so please do so guys.
its not confirmed unless you have thousands of independent tests
Just a warning, you're about to get flamed for posting this in the development section. With that said, I too never received an LoS until the day after rooting the phone (had it for two weeks with no issues). Installing the LoS kernel has helped a ton, though.
i can also confirm that rooting caused my phone to experience an endless onslaught of LoS occurances. I had the phone for a month without any LoS issues, only ****ty battery life (losing 6-8%/hr idling over night). The day I rooted the phone, i experienced LoS three times. Installing the lostkernel helped and I only got one in three days, but I ended up switching to the EVO 3D since I coudl not stand the battery life.
I have never once had LoS, on either stock put root. I am one of the lucky ones. However in have read there are people out there that have LoS without routing, so I am not sure your confirmation is 100%.

Unless you can explain why my COMPLETELY STOCK phone got struck with the LOS bug, then no, rooting is not the cause. It may TRIGGER the LOS bug, but it is NOT THE CAUSE.
Please try to do a data profile clear/update, that's what fixed my phone.
sorry before hand but whats los? loss of service??????
I experienced LoS before and after root. Now I know what it means when I read "your milage may vary ".
Now to another issue, just because your phone is showing reception or 1 bar doesn't mean you haven't LoS... lol, only way to find out is by placing a call...
Samsung is very good with destroying its reputation... Before it was their lazy late updates, now defective devices... I was 100% set to get Galaxy Nexus, then I heard Samsung... Hmmm makes me think three times and looking to alternatives, definitely will wait atleast few weeks before getting Nexus.
I would compare samsung to a sexy sl*t lol

One case does not mean confirmation, plenty of people on stock are getting this problem.

Root and go back to stock kernel... or use the repack, bet yu have the same rate of LoS...its not rooting, kernels built from source have been shown to increase it. Even unrooted kernels... please do som research and get the facts straight before posting incorrect info.. especially in the wrong section...

[Q] Refurb phone = Battery doesn't drain

I got a refurb S3 through a GeekSquad Black Tie warranty for a cracked screen. Since I had my initial S3 for about a year and LOVED how it worked since day 1, I never rooted it or put any aftermarket ROMs on it. I'd had my phone "just the way I like it" and ran my business on it so I didn't want to have ANY issues. I tried about 20 different ROMs on my Epic4G over the previous 2 years and LOVED the flexibility, so that tells you how much I liked the S3 stock.
When I got my refurb phone, I instantly rooted and put the newest LiquidSmooth on it since I was starting from scratch anyway. After a couple hours, I noticed that my data was TERRIBLE (all I ever got was "1x" unless wifi was connected... and I have a beautiful shiny new 4G tower about 1000 feet from my house) and that my battery would stay frozen at 100% until it would just die. I have since flashed back to Stock (rooted) and the data problem seems to have taken care of itself, but the battery still never drains.
I feel like an absolute idiot for not verifying full functionality of the phone before I flashed it, but is it likely that the phone is bad?
I never "charge" my phone (and never have with this phone). I have 2 identical batteries that I charge on a battery charger that I've been cycling evenly since the day I bought it. Am I missing a key step for calibrating the batteries with the new phone?
Sorry if this is a repeat n00b post, but after about 10 minutes of Googling, I got nothing.
FYI, I tried the Battery Calibration app from the market, but it didn't seem to do anything.
Thanks in advance!
Question go in Q&A not general.
But your saying that you run the phone all day and the battery can die but the phone reads full 100% all the time?

Thanks
FNM
Ah, I hadn't seen the question, just the fact that it was moved.
Yes! The battery says it's 100% all the time until it dies. It did this with LiquidSmooth and after I went back to stock, Since the phone isn't aware that it's about to die, it just shuts off without going through the chime/vibrate/shutdown process and it can go unnoticed for quite some time if I'm working.
Any ideas?

Agreed. I would triangle away it (to get rid of flash counters) then Odin back to stock and take it back.

Hit the "Thanks" button if I helped!
Is it even possible that it's a hardware issue? The fact that it's a refurb isn't alarming at all? I flashed it back to the stock rom and then tried a different kernel after a couple days (as far as I can tell).
I only say this because it takes a day or 2 to get the phone "just how I like it" and get all my stuff copied back over.
Not being the super-savvy user, where are the stock sprint Odin files? I installed the stock rom (clearly the wrong one) through CWM.
Thanks again.
Exactly why I said flash it back to stock triangle away to 0 and take it back. There's something wrong with the device itself.
here you can flash this and it does it all in one shot returns the stock rom, triangle away and stock recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31981341 and you do it all from custom recovery.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the proper link. Just got the ball rolling on another replacement through Best Buy, but will certainly try this now!
Ive had two refurbs from Best Buy and both of them have rebooted like crazy and done all kinds of other odd things. Im on my second one now.. picked it up last night, its going back today.

[Q] Serious issues.

Okay, I have no idea what is wrong with this piece of ****. I'll go to where the issues started.
I got a brand new phone with insurance and flashed it over to Slimbean back in May, stayed on the same build with no issues, until about 2 weeks ago, when the issues started. The screen would stay off and I would have to pull the battery. It did this a lot.
Then out of nowhere, after a routine battery pull, it wouldn't come on at all. The blue light would just stay on when I tried to turn the phone on. The only way to get it to boot was to put the charger in then power it on.
I flashed back to EL29 and upgraded to stock GB27. The wakelock thing still happens. It randomly reboots. and now, the blue light of death thing is happening even when I plug the charger or usb in. I can't get it to respond at all. can someone help me? I figured flashing back to stock would help but apparently not...
EDIT: What is weird about the blue light thing is from what I've seen it is supposed to be a brick, but when it was happening before plugging a charger would fix it. Now it doesn't fix it.
edit 2: Just put it back on the charger, took the battery out, took it off the charger, and tried booting. It worked. I still need to know what is wrong so this stops happening, though.

Take it to a sprint store, have them test the issue, if no water damage and within a year of receiving the phone they should switch it out no deductible no hassle.
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
Also, try grabbing a logcat. It's possible there's a conflict with something causing the reboots and SOD. The blue brick light is odd though.

All phones replaced by isurance have a 1 year warranty from the time received through the isurance process. I have had 3 E4GT because of the power button and overheating issue and they will replace it if it's a factory defect. Just cause they replaced it doesn't mean you have to pay a deductible go to your nearest sprint repair center or call sprint and they should transfer you to the isurance department and they'll send you a replacement for your replacement. My last replacement took me 4 days to get here and it was during my power button issue which kept restarting my phone like every 5 minutes, so annoying.

This has happened twice to my phone, and both times, it turned out to be a battery issue. I take it sometimes when you plug charger in the battery charge icon doesn't show, but after popping it out and then back in it will show then boot? This is because your battery isn't completely blown, or even fat, rounded etc... But has a segment of bad cells. I'm sure when this happens your phone gets hot underneath the camera as well. I am dealing with this same issue, and awaiting a replacement battery yet again. Watch the phone discharge carefully. Mine discharges fine until about 80%, then does exactly what you are saying. After the battery pull and such, I get a boot. The battery by that time is around 62%. Works great until about 45%, then completely shuts off. If I boot back up, it says the battery is dead and I have about 3% to work with until I get a charger hooked up. I tried all the same stuff you are saying, and the battery replacement fixed it, for a while at least...
Edit: a side from the battery being crappy, I think I found the reason why it would do what it is doing. Mine did this yet again, even with new battery. Then I felt the spot that was heating up, and noticed it was extremely close to the micro SD card. Removed it and went through a full cycle without issue. Seems there is an issue reading my card, and was causing the phone to power off, and lock up, all the while tearing up my battery... Give it a shot, if you have an sd card in there, if not, I don't have any other suggestions besides take the phone back.

S pen put in backwards....

So this has been posted only once somewhere else, but unfortunately not on XDA. I accidentally put my s pen in my phone backwards and it was stuck. Of course, I frantically pulled it out, but the end is now stuck inside the phone and will not come out.
Anyone have any advice? Would I be able to take it back under a 14 day return or warranty it? This really sucks right now.
So I advise you all not to do what I did.
Okay, so what I suggest is putting super glue on the tip of your s pen and putting it in there. Maybe gorilla glue and use it to fish it out?

I was specifically warned not to do this by my best buy sales person. I thought, well, let me see if there's resistance before it gets stuck...Nope! Like an idiot, I broke it off in there. The good news is that Samsung will repair it for a cost. I'll let you know how much. Call it an "idiot tax"

This made me laugh.
I put my pen in backwards and had it stuck although I didn't break the end by forcing it out. I tried to exchange it at Best Buy, but was turned down. I called Samsung Support and they created a 2-day shipping label for me to send them the phone. I sent them the phone 8/26 and it is scheduled to arrive in my hands 9/10 which means I will be apart from my phone for 16 days. I was not charged for the repair nor the shipping to and from the repair center.

Thanks for the link. I would never be stupid enough to put it in backwards but just in case I let someone use my device and they do, this is great info.
Yes, I thought I would never be stupid enough to put it in backwards either. But rushing to clear out from one meeting on the way to another one, talking to some folks at the same time, in backwards it went.
My only gripe with Samsung is there is absolutely NO difference in resistance inserting it backwards or forwards, although I'm not sure it would be possible to do that and keep the flush fitting s-pen.
I used the drinking straw method to remove my s-pen, and the internals of the phone are fine. Thank you Internet for saving my device!

I've seen many videos confirming the paper method works to fix this issue. Your post is the first I've heard that the straw method also works. It is the ease in which this mistake can be made that is the design flaw.
4 hour old note 5... at a bar with co-worker. he dares me to put it in backwards. i foolishly did. got stuck. was able to remove it after some force and playing around. works, but phone has no detection of in/out as expected. called ATT and their sending me a replacement. had the rep state on the record the pen was "stuck inside device, and now that it has been removed has broken phone-to-pen sync"
blah :-\

Lol, my story is similar to yours. I first read about the issue and didn't believe it could be that easy to render the spen useless. It was that easy. Customer support came through for me. Not a big issue anymore since there is a known easy way to fix.

Crazy right? I didn't even go THAT far into the device. Our eyes wide in shock and amazement as we tried to process what had just happened. It was just as I was wrapping up the showing off features and screen bit too. Damn, maybe next time lmao. Att got my back though, lucky !
