Alright guys,
I recently rooted my epic. Now what? How do I get themes onto my device? I had an eris but didnt know what to do...i really like some themes, especially the angry red alien. (i think thats what it is)
Is there an easy step by step tutorial that I missed?
Also, anything else thats cool besides themes that would look nice
Thanks guys!

Lol....cheech, you have much to learn young padawan!!
First, I believe you can't flash themes over stock roms, only deodexed roms will take themes. The stock rom is odexed.
Second, whatever version of clock work mod you used as a recovery must be compatible with the rom/theme/kernel/ect you are going to use.
Three, sorry I can't break it all down for you, but I'm still learning, just read about what you want to flash before jumping in and burning the house down.
Oh and stay away from rom manager for now, unless you want major issues...
One last thing and I don't mean to sound like a ****. If your not willing to read and research, your going to inevitably run into issues, major issues. I read for weeks before I did anything and its nearly impossible to put that into one or two paragraphs. If you don't feel like reading I'd tell you hacking your epic or any phone for that matter is a terrible idea.

Now, completely off topic, I think I ran into those major issues you were talking about. (I didnt check this thread before I started the process)
Well heres what happened. (I have a new thread out so this is just a copy/paste)
just installed CWM 3.0.0.5 and now my Epic is frozen upon reboot! It keeps going to the SAMSUNG black screen and wont move from that.
I reboot in recovery mode and get to the CWM menu but cant do anything from there, cant wipe device, cant remove anything, etc.
Help me fix this!
Im a college student that needs his phone working ASAP!
Thank you!
yeahh... any ideas?

It was sarcastic humor since a few people have been finding their phone bricked.
It sounds like you used CWM 3.0. Which converts to EXT4 (for filesystem type). You will want to read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
and then this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067 and this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Flashing_Guide_-_Android And THEN use the SEARCH TOOL * as you should have before asking* to see if you can find th problem within he thousand or so threads in the epic 4g part. Good luck.
Check out my how to video thread for visual help! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009997
WAIT. You DID install clockwork mod 3.0. Did you read a single guide? The stock kernel is NOT compatible with the EXT4 format. Therefore you HAVE to flash a kernel that is. (search it): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612 read the steps and you should be fine (as soon as you flash the right kernel). Oh, and you should download and flash SyndicateFROZEN ROM. Just a friendly suggestion.
Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ2g6J1JgjU to take your phone back to stock or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy2Et6qVGdo&feature=channel_video_title to put on the syndicate rom now that you have upgraded clockwork. qbking77 videos are awsome and if they help think about a donation so he keeps providing more.
Thank you to everyone who helped me out in this thread. My phone is now fixed. Turns out the .tar / PDA file that I was using in Odin was corrupt and wouldnt work fully.
I used a different version which seemed to work fine, then it upgraded once I turned my phone on.
Everyone who helped me out will be receiving thanks
Thanks again everyone!

Hi guys,
I know most of you will say I'm a noob who hasn't searched and everyone and their mom knows this but im new to the custom roms, I have a US T mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989. I have rooted it and flashed the latest clockwork but when i try to install the custom rom it says im missing the update.zip file. and i cant find that damn thing anywhere online. I have harassed the search on Google, YouTube, xda and every other site i can think of but i cant find anything..... please......help?
Don't select update from zip.
Choose install/update from custom zip. It's a separate option.
RE
i do select the install custom but i dont have the actual update.zip file in my sdcard. i dont know where to get it

How were you able to install clockworkmod and root, but you can't find a rom? That's ass-backwards if you ask me.
Check the development forum. Plenty of roms in there. Most of them zipped.
i did find a rom but when i try to install it, i get a message that update.zip is missing

Select 'install zip from sdcard', then select 'choose zip from sdcard'. If it's on the internal, not an actual microsd card, select 'choose zip from internal sdcard'.
I'd start from scratch. Sounds like you did something wrong...
Start here:

Then here:

Then flash whatever ROM you want...

First off what the F is villain...
2nd... take the battery out, plug in your usb cable to the PC. Hold vol UP + vol DOWN and plug in your USB cable to the phone while holding the volume buttons. Does it go into Download mode?
**EDIT** If your talking about this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198334
Then yes you are an idiot. I'm sorry Thats for the UK version and I believe you are bricked. You could try a USB jig...
I'm afraid now (if even possible) your new friends will be Download Mode and ODIN..
Isn't the VillainROM a ROM for the i9100? If so, that is a completely different phone and you probably are f-ed.
sorry to say it bro but...
Have fun with your new paper weight.
If the phone is new, you can probably get a warranty exchange.
villain was supposedly a rom,
I did as you said but the screen does not light up or show anything, i hear the noise on the computer as if it recognizes it

Yea it is. I edited my post with the link to where he probably got it.. suckes when we can't help people :/
The question is where did you get the ROM from? There is not a VillainROM in the T989 dev section. VillainROM is in the i9100 (international Galaxy S 2) dev section.

If thats the case and it makes a noise you can "try" starting ODIN and see if it recognizes it on a COM port. if so you might be fixable...

You might be in luck if odin still recognizes it.
If not, you can try warranty or an unbricking service. There's one floating around for 40 USD or so.
Hey guys, I think I screwed up here and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem:
Basically, I had a rooted E4G Touch with a custom ROM installed. I went to install ANOTHER custom ROM THROUGH ODIN, as this previous ROM (I believe it was a Calkulin variant) did NOT have CWM recovery. During the ODIN process, something went wrong, and my computer/ODIN...basically, everything froze up while doing the MODEM portion. NOW I can't do anything.
- CWM was able to install on the thing...but it does not recognize my external SD card now. Every time I try to mount it, I get a "Error mounting /emmc".
- I'm still able to get into download mode on the phone, however the phone is not recognized on any computer I've tried. I've attempted multiple computers/USB cords and nothing picks it up.
I'm running out of ideas here. I picked up a USB jig that should be here soon, so I'm going to try that and reset the counter....which leads me to my next question: If I use that, can I take the thing back to Sprint and get a replacement? I have the insurance plan and everything, so if they won't take it back because of the custom software I guess I could always smash it or something...
Any help would be appreciated!

The ROM you flashed through ODIN was for this phone, right?
What custom ROM are you referring to that was available through ODIN?
assuming you flashed the right ROM, start with the basics..if you can get into download mode then try a simple reboot of your computer. Sometimes Odin won't recognize after it has been run

It was the CyanogenMod 9 rom that is out there right now. IN the post (I'm having trouble finding it as I'm not at that computer right now) they had an ODIN variation for people such as myself, where you were to flash that and then go back through to update it to the latest version.

And I just realized I posted this in General and not Q&A...and chance I could get this moved since I am clearly out of my mind right now?

The only odin component involved with flashing CM9 is flashing a gb kernel with a CWM recovery. I haven't seen a cm9 tar, this is why I'm confused. Finding out exactly what you flashed will help in understanding what the problem is.
To flash cm9 you need to odin a gb cwm kernel and then boot to recovery and install cm9. However, that's not a tar, its an update.zip.

Yeah it was definitely a tar.md5 file, which leads me to believe I was incredibly dumb and possibly flashed a ROM for a different model phone. I'm having difficulty finding the post now which is very strange. This could be one of those moments where I take a good hard look in the mirror and figure out just what the heck I was thinking.
I'll keep looking for what exactly I did wrong, but in the mean time is there anything else I could attempt or look for short of attempting that USB jig and making a trip to Sprint? I'm feeling like a huge idiot right now. I've done this how many times now and when I finally make a mistake, it turns out to be huge.

Well ultimately you can try uninstalling / reinstalling drivers. But you say this issue exists across multiple pcs so that likely isn't it.
You can try another cable and see if you have any success with that.
Other then that, it kinda really depends what is in that tar you flashed. Once you find it, post the link, and that will help troubleshoot your issue.

Negative, I started right at the "Using the noob-proof ODIN method:". It said noob-proof and I decided that would be the easiest. It turns out it is very easy...if you're flashing to the correct phone Plus, I'd used ODIN before and felt comfortable with it.

I just downloaded the tar to have a look at whats included.
After flashing this you'll have a bootloader for the intl. sgs2. This is a problem many ran into when original SGS2 leaked tars started surfacing as well.
JTAG might be able to fix it, I'm not sure whether people with this issue were successful or not with JTAG repair as the intl gs2 flashing boat seems to have sailed now. However, a jig will likely do nothing, unfortunately.

Ok thank you for your help on this. You don't think a jig will reset the counter or anything so that I can take it back to Sprint? If not, I'm not above "dropping" it on the ground and using the insurance I have on it for a replacement.

I don't foresee it working only because your phone isn't recognized by your pc and the problem doesnt lie on the pc side.
The problem is instead with the port on the phone which leads me to believe it won't recognize a jig either.
A jtag if successful will leave you with more money in your pocket and a non-returb. Something to consider if you've got a backup phone you can use for a few days.

I don't see sprint replacing it with cm9 On it .... And u will need mobile Odin to get back to stock but with it not mounting the Emmc probably can't do that .... That is your hope to get back to stock using mobile Odin someway .... Triangle away app will reset Odin count but with no radio you need to get apps to do it and no sd from what u said ...maybe tell insurance u lost it and get it replaced
Jtag should work also since there is no emmc failure like the blue light of death bricks ...

The whole process is pretty simple on what I have done. I will explain my situation here and my question that has got be baffled.
So it all started about two weeks ago, where I was flashing LiquidSmooth on my phone. I had a Touch-type CWM. It isn't mega old but it's pretty old for CWM, I haven't updated in a while (as i've seen there are updates to recent ones).
Anywho, I did a complete wipe, used the darkside wipe, alongside with the darkside cache wipe.
I think this was my fault, so please correct me anyone if I am wrong here. I accidentally hit "reboot phone" instead of "reboot bootloader"
I got a permabrick from this whole ordeal. It was a permabrick because It said QHSUSB_DLOAD in the device manager, looking this up further confirmed my reasoning. I didn't want to jtag because that invovles removing the phone to pieces and soldering on wires etc. etc.
So I resorted to send it out to Samsung.
All is well when it came back. I made sure this time the whole phone was setup properly.
So I use Odin install for CWM and SU was installed via CWM. I install an older version of CWM (non-touch, i believe 1st revision as i've posted in one of the threads).
I kept stock ROM, everything was working okay and suddenly, KERPLUNK, it went back into permanent brick after I deleted cache partition, dalvik cache, and battery cache wipe. I didn't do fix permissions or anything, just hit reboot afterwards.
This is a super head scratcher here..... Anyone know where I went wrong?
Any insight here is greatly appreciated! :good:
P.S. I am now sending in my phone TWICE to Samsung for repairs.
If you are on the most up to date CWM, do not use the scripts. They are no longer needed, and will cause problems( hard brick though, never heard of) The second time, im stumped. I suggest go to TWRP and ditch the scripts. Latest TWRP does not need it

I've flashed the hercules ROM. I know this for sure because Liquidsmooth was working, it was extremely glitchy (playing games gave me pixelated actions sometimes, and using something like gameCIH/Game Guardian was unworkable). So i decided to ditch it and was getting ready to flash Jedi Mind Trick.
After the whole hard bricking ordeal, I decided to stick to stock rom, and even on that, I just flashed CWM and SU ONLY. Rebooted, and deleted the cache's (like i've posted to you) with absolutely no success. It baffled me that I bricked the phone AGAIN too!

Once again, all of your insight is well appreciated! I just do not want to hardbrick my phone AGAIN and have to send it to Samsung. I am not allowed to even think of a replacement because this was a b-day present a year or two ago from my fiance.

You say that it is bricked again. Do you mean by that, that you cannot get into recovery?

Yes, it is perma-bricked, meaning the only method of fixing the brick is jtagg'ing
Upon plugging it into device manager, I get the prompt "QHSUSB_DLOAD" and phone doesn't even boot on no matter what combinations I make.

Thank you LoopDo, I will do this after I get my phone home again.
I have this phone, and none of the steps you listed would brick the device. Even with no ROM on the phone, you should still be able to get into recovery.
Is there something you aren't telling us?

Nope, wouldn't be a reason why I would lie because then the problem will never be resolved.... I'm kind of nervous on reflashing ONE more time after the phone comes home again....
The phone has been fixed once AGAIN, and it is in the process of being shipped back to me.
Phone will be home Wednesday and I will give it ONE more try
Wish me luck!
P.S. my PC has been glitchy lately, so that MAY or MAY NOT contribute to the permabrick, then again the brick doesn't happen until I flash stuff via CWM.
P.S.S. I've since re-installed Win 7 again, it hasn't been glitchy since

You most likely flashed the Wrong Liquidsmooth ROM (incompatible Kernel), and it hard bricked the phone. It happened to me the same way, and I had to send it in for JTAG.
I have bricked my phone installing the Liquidsmooth ROM too. I downloaded the wrong ROM, though. The thread should have a big ****in warning to double check the ROM you are about to download, otherwise your phone is a toast. There were more people who bricked their phones by installing the Liquidsmooth.
Well, I got it back from the warranty and the phone looks good. Installed that Liquidsmooth again and played for a day. Tried other JB ROMs. Most of them are OK in terms of battery life and smoothness, but there is something wrong with the signal. People always say my voice isn't clear. I got tired of all this BS and testing new ROMs and went to back to ICS and won't look back, not anytime.
Don't use darkside scripts, btw. You don't need that anymore.
I'd like to say thank you for everyone's patience. All of your insight is more than helpful!

I might have, but the one i downloaded (which is still on the phone's memory card) is a hercules ROM. Either way on my second try there was a hard brick also, in return of which I had to resend it in. The second try was just simply: Odin---->CWM---->Root---->SU---->wipe cache partition+fix permissions+wipe dalvik cache via CWM (not the super scripts).

Thanks again for your insight I think i'm done with flashing for a little bit for now.... I kind of want as factory of a JB Rom as possible. :good:
If anyone has any idea where I can get that, please let me know as my Stock ICS is a bit laggy at times, with the facial recognition system, it lags even worse!

All the steps you say you did don't point to a brick. But one thing caught my eye! You said you were flashing liquidsmooth? What File did you flash? Did it have Hercules in the name? Because if it didn't then it's not for our phone.. I only ask because a lot of other people made that mistake

that just happened to me today with liquid smooth. i had to unroot, flash stock, and start over. im pretty sure i got it from goo.im under hercules. unfortunate mislabeling? oh yeah, and if your phone shows anything other than nothing, youre not hard bricked. thats why its called Hercules, i think. ive been soft bricked so many times from dumb **** like. ****ing with the governors and all that **** cm gives you the option to do when there aint even a 1080p camera that works fully = / lol <3 Cm I Love Yew!! But yeah, odin will set you free!!!
Hi all,
from a big smile to sad face... that is how it's been for the past 24 hours
I rooted the phone then went to back up the stock rom after that wiped data, cache, dalvik then went on trying to instal Omega 4.0 and suddenly i got this message my external sd is unreadable. rebooted the phone and noticed that it takes me directly to the downloader screen. i tried to fix the phone by bringing it back to it's stock condition but no luck. I used Odin and so far it's the only thing the phone responds to but no luck with fixing it... I am trying to download the official stock fw hint this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267895
but it stops and never finishes the whole amount of data... this seems the only way for me revive my phone back to life!
any suggestions what should I do now? it stopped showing the downloader screen now since I flashed the kernel drive for the S4 through Odin and now shows the black screen with the "Samsung Galaxy S4" writing.
by the way it keeps telling me that my phone isn't rooted but I did root it! am using twrp recovery.
I just got the phone from t-mobile 2 days ago and am debating on returning the phone back to them as the phone is still bootable to the recovery and that might revoke my warranty "i guess?"
Is it possible just to walk in to t-mobile store and swap the phone with another one since it didn't pass the 2 weeks returning window? I also got the phone insurance for it.
Please help, I sure need my phone back in working condition...
Omega 4 is for the octa core so thats why your phone bricked. If you can grt into download mode odin the stock files. If you can get into recovery try flashing a rom made for the phone. Dont freak out just read read read and youll be fine.

ayeeee ppl trying to reach me over the phone and they can't because of this stupid brick! well stupid me because I didn't know that Omega is for Octa core phone version... Yeah I can get it to download mode and recovery mode but is it possible just flash the stock file from the recovery instead of odin? I am waiting for that stock fw download to finish hint it's on hotfile and going in turtle speed!
your bricked, im pretty sure flashing stock wont help you (hasnt from my past experience) but doesnt hurt to give it a try.
i dont think will just give you another one, even though its in the two week window, because its your fault and not the result of hardware failure. the age old "oh i updated and not it wont turn on" probably wont wort because there are little to none reports of that happening. plus (and this is me assuming, correct me if im wrong) but when in download mode it probably shows custom status, which auto voids any warranty. but once again, doesnt hurt to try.
Unfortunately, from my past experience, your SOL
If the phone turns on and has download and recovery you are not bricked....only soft brick and the odin file should work. Just be patient and wait for it to finish

Yeah go ahead and root again just be careful with the rom you flash make sure its for m919. I stayed with stock because no rom has the options that came with the phone such as motions and gestures and the camera.

I just did the motochopper method and as I am reading now about the possibility of loosing your root access by future OTAs so am planning to flash that file that keeps your root safe even from future updates "SetUID Restriction" I will prolly keep my basic rom and wait for something better in future.
Thanks

would you suggest me instal the CM? I am debating over here and for sure I will make a good use with the space that can free if I do... hint I have a 64gb msd installed on the phone
the motochopper root didn't go through by the way so I used odin and patched twrp plus did the SetUID restriction thing.
thnx

Well if you want to flash CyanogenMod, make sure its for the m919. I'm kinda lost though, did you still want all the features that Touchwiz has like air gesture, motions etc? Or you don't care for those?

am not really decided about that, does it really matter? all i care about is the blazing speed, low battery consumption and for sure the freedom of moving all the apps to the extSD ... I think all these new features are gimmick and it may take another generation for it to get the best of it. I picked S4 over the HTC one just because the 1080p feature and the funny thing is that I missed on there is no HDMI port on this phone! lol no biggie
tell me more about the touchwiz kernel, is it worth it? I don't see many CRs out there at the moment

Well right now I don't think CM is as stable compared to a TW ROM. FYI there are a lot or ROMS as of now. You have Wicked, Infamous, Darth Stalker, Deathstar. There is also faux and ktoonez kernal available for TW. As for the extsd, you will need to format the card to fat32 for the phone to read it properly.
