Help Needed. Need to get back to Rooted 2.2 or 2.3

Hey guys. I have a problem and not sure how to go about this. My Evo was at 2.2 rooted for a long while and all of a sudden it started acting up. It would always freeze and had to be rebooted constantly. So I had a back that I went back to successfully but it is at 2.1 now (Baseband 2.15.00.09.01)
Now I'm not getting the OTA update to 2.2. I go into HTC software update and it says no available updates for my phone.
So how do I get to 2.2 or 2.3 rooted?
FYI after going into bootlaoder and choosing Recovery, I get Clockworkmod Recovery. Is this normal?

You need to flash the stock rooted ROM for the latest OTA update. I would suggest trying out some different Roms, though. That's the best part of rooting.
And ClockworkMod is the most popular recovery for the Evo, so yeah that's probably right.

Sounds like the perfect time to throw CM7 on there and see what you think about AOSP Gingerbread.

It's pretty easy actually. Once you have root again (if you don't already), go to http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic and download either the newest nighly (30) or RC2 to your memory card.
Boot into Clockwork and go to backup and restore, and choose nandroid backup or backup (I'm not using clockwork, so I don't know the exact verbiage). Once the backup is complete, do a full system wipe by clicking on wipe data/factory reset.
Once that is done, choose install zip from sdcard, scroll down to cm_supersonic_full-30.zip and select it. It will install and then ask you to reboot. Go ahead and reboot.
Once your phone is up and running again, you'll want to get back into recovery so that you can flash GoogleApps, which you can find here: http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/.
You'll flash these just like you did CyanogenMod 7 a minute ago, although you will want to wipe your cache and dalvik cache (which is located under "advanced" in the Clockwork menu) first.
All you have to do then is boot back up, go through the walkthrough to set up your google account, and then you'll be running (close to) stock Gingerbread 2.3.

I'd actually use the link that CheesyNutz posted up there. Universal Auto Root works better than Unrevoked, from what I've heard.

I really appreciate your help. I just bought a xoom so I want wireless tethering working on my evo.

One last question. Is there a tethering app built into CM7 or do I need to get wireless tether from the marketplace?

Yeah, built in tethering works fine. Seems like you found it. Enjoy Gingerbread.

Many recommend wiping data/factory reset (which I know was suggested and you've done), but also cache and dalvik BEFORE flashing any new ROM. Also, with CM, is it not suggested that you use Format_All?

I only started using Format All recently, and never had any trouble before that with just a factory reset. Different phones react differently though...

another question is voicemail is not working. I get a text message saying Android has sent younansprint voice message and to call a number. Then it has this long string of letters and numbers. So how do inset this up

Your best bet is to use YouMail, which is free in the market. It's a lot like Sprint's Visual VoiceMail that you have on Sense roms, but with more features. I use it, and I love it.

Brand new with lots of rooting woes

Hey folks, just got my epic 4g two days ago. been trying to root it since then. the battery life is terrible on the stock ROM and i want something that allows me to use my phone without worry about draining all the power. I cant seem to root it though. i tried this one click root;

but it says the phone is not connected. so installed drivers, tried a different cable and nothing has helped. what can i do? also, if someone could just lay out how you flash a new ROM and such. i havent seen a FAQ or anything that clearly outlines the process and im very confused.

You need:
1. A USB cable other than the stock one, it's a POS
2. Switch USB ports if one doesn't work, use one in the back if it's a desktop
3. Restart Computer/Epic if it still doesn't work

tried all of that, and ever port on my computer. no luck.

Easiest thing rather than struggling with one click is to Odin in a prerooted ROM like here:

Once you get rooted, find the ROM you like, read the OP thoroughly. The instructions for each ROM are similiar but not the same.

looks perfect for me! just cant make it work. i downloaded the file and it came across as a .rar which i cant open. it says look for the odin.exe file. where can i find the download for that?
so close, yet still struggling.

The Odin file was in the second post. Winrar will extract a rar file. There are many free programs out there for extracting rar files. Here is the Odin file:

thanks for that, guess i just missed it.
holy **** though, am i just tech tarded? cause this seems like way to much stuff. All because samsung couldnt give me decent battery life. just had avg block a virus from the winrar reader i tried to install to open to .rar file so i could get the .tar file for odin.

Sorry, should have warned you to turn off your anti-virus. Several files are detected as trojans. Once you get rooted you will be free of the hassles. Good bunch of people here always willing to help out.

okay, got odin installed, loaded up the things the best i could as per the instructions and download links. plugged my phone in and hit start, nothing happened.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
is all that shows up.

free of hassles. yes please. ive read up on a few ROMs and it seems like that would certainly help me enjoy this phone and not be tooo hard to use. just this first step keeps tripping me up.

If you've finally successfully rooted, then you've done the hardest part. From here on out please make an effort to browse and search the forum, or GOOGLE search your question with "XDA" in the search bar. Everything you have asked up until now I can easily find answered 10 times on this forum.
There are many of us here that are happy to take the time to help you get the most out of your Epic and try and answer your questions, but we get very tired of constantly answering the same questions.
It's time to wean you.
To put you on the right path though, I will answer you. This is a rooted STOCK rom you have now. No adjustments except the freedom to adjust it yourself. You want a custom rom to flash over that, such as Bonsai, Midnight, or Syndicate Rom Frozen, which I will not link you to .

If u mean that EB13 prerooted, no. You will need one of the better ROMs like Bonsai, Syndicate, Midnight or others. Read the OPs in development of each ROM so you like what you are getting before you grab it.

Just rooted my E4GT, and I have a question:

I want to install the Blazer ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363071), but I'm new to rooting and flashing ROMs onto my device as this is my first Android device ever.
I was watching qbking77's video on installing the Blazer ROM, and he said that I needed CWM 5.0.2.7, but I believe he also said somewhere in the comments on some of his other videos that Rouge doesn't work as well as the (normal?) CWM 5.0.2.7? Is this true? Because I followed Zedomax's tutorial to root and install CWM and he uses Rogue, so I was wondering if this would mess with my phone at all.
Also, I heard that using the stock EL29 rom is usually unstable when installing ICS ROMs and that I should flash EL26 if I plan on using any ICS ROMs. Would it also be bad to try flashing the Blazer ROM without flashing an EL26 ROM and/or regular CWM or can I just go ahead and flash Blazer with my stock rooted EL29 E4GT with Rogue CWM 5.0.2.7?
Long story short: Can I just flash the Blazer ROM from stock EL29 Rooted with Rogue CWM 5.0.2.7 or do I need/should to do other things before attempting to flash this ROM? I've heard bad things about Rogue CWM and EL29 vs EL26 and regular CWM.

CWM won't be too picky, I have used standard cwm attached below and have not had problems with any flash so far, except CM9 {alot of people do, you will learn that}, anyway, follow OP install instructions and you will be fine, make sure to grab Calk's Format script in the OP. You should be on your new home screen in no time at all. If you get any FC's at first, try going back to CWM and Fix Permissions, Reboot and should be good.

And what is an "FC?" Sorry, I don't know all the terminology yet, but I read and watch a lot of videos daily about all of this stuff to try and learn as much as possible. His instructions just seem very vague for people that are new to rooting and installing custom ROMs.

Correct, download the file I attached, it has EL26, its rooted and the CWM is present - Make sure you do this with Odin 1.85, put it in the PDA position and uncheck the AUTO RE-BOOT option. You will then have to wait for it to Pass, but should only be a few seconds, unplug, pull bat and reboot holding Volume+ and Power.
FC= Force Close
They seem vague at first, but mainly due to alot of jargon your not familiar with yet.

Okay, and where can I find Odin 1.85? Or can I just use the exact same Odin program that I rooted with (using Zedomax's root method on SPH-D710 to root to stock EL29)?
And, let me see if I'm understanding this all correctly (please be patient with me ):
1. I run Odin 1.85
2. click PDA (I'm assuming is an option/button in Odin), and uncheck Auto-boot
3. select the EL26 file you included and click start(?)
4. wait for it to pass, then unplug the phone (should still be turned on at this point?)
5. pull bat (I assume you mean select the file for EL26 included in e4gtauto.zip Zedomax provided?)
6. reboot by going into CWM and selecting reboot.
Correct?
And I shouldn't have to do anything to delete Rogue CWM? Just these above steps?

I am not sure where the 1.85 odin file is on XDA, but I have attached, below, still learning my way around here too.

your steps are good, except I meant pull battery, not really necessary, but I usually forget to move my files to my sd card, so I end up pulling it anyway.
Once you get the PASS in odin, you will then hold in power for 8 seconds and hold Volume+ button at the same time {or pull battery and do same}.
That will put you into CWM, then go to install zip from SD > Choose Zip File from External SD, grab your Calkulin file, run it, then go back and run the ROM file and Reboot!
You should be good to go from there.

One last question: I don't need to do anything to remove Rogue CWM before following your steps, do I? I didn't want to try anything until I was sure about this because I'm incredibly scared of bricking my phone as this is my first time ever doing anything like this.

Correct, once you flash the el26 file from above, Rogue will be gone, you will reboot to recovery, flash Calkulin, flash ROM, reboot, rejoice!

Haha, I bet. I'm already loving this ROM, the theming is really minimalistic, everything is stable, and I can just install Apex Launcher if I want the stock ICS experience. I'm here at my parents house for summer break, and I live in Florida for college. I don't really have access to a windows PC there since I have a Macbook Pro (courtesy of Full Sail University), and I didn't really want to deal with all the bs you have to go through on a mac to root the phone and stuff so I just waited for summer break, so getting your help this early in my break was amazing because this means I can try out other ROMs now that I know what to do if I feel so.
I'll be using your tutorial for the rest of my family's phones as well since they all got incredibly interested when I told them I could update the phone for them before Sprint did, haha. Plus, my mom loves the idea of the Wifi tethering for free, so she was pretty much sold the second I said that.
Thanks again! I already love Android 100x more than iOS (I'm coming from an iPhone) because of the ability to customize literally anything about the OS.

You are most definitely welcome, I would be more than happy to help in the future too, but do try Nova Launcher, its quite slick, easy to customize and I haven't seen a bit of lag out of it period.

I'm using Apex right at the moment, but I've heard great reviews about Nova. I'll definitely try it out tomorrow when I get some time, and I have to set up the wifi network on this phone. We live a little outside the city here and the 3G/4G speeds get pretty awful in certain spots for them. Back in Orlando for myself, however, they're really fast.
But yeah, I'll definitely check out Nova. Maybe I can still refund Apex. XD

I'm attempting to help my buddy with flashing Blazer ICS on his stock Epic 4g Touch, and when I started researching this for him, it seemed to come with a lot of potential "gotcha's" and I didn't want to be the one to brick his device.

Have you gotten as far as rooting his phone yet? What "gotcha's" are you referring too, sorry for the delayed response. Been busy. Once you get him rooted follow the OP for Blazer Rom and flip back and forth through here if you have questions. Most of the "Gotcha's" that I am thinking of have been wiped due to sfhub's mods/fixes.

[Q] By this point, i just want my phone back...

Its 2:30 in the morning. Its been all day. I dont come to ask a question on XDA unless i literally cannot for the life of me find the answer anywhere else on the whole of google.
For me, whether someone can help me here will make or break me writing off android as the worst operating system ever made, and moving back to iPhone full time.
Ill cut it short. I've owned PLENTY of android devices. All rooted and rommed and modded to my hearts content. Recently traded my i5 for a Galaxy Note 2- i317 AT&T. Rooted first night and running jedi xp14 ever since. Loved it.
Earlier today im jamming to some music with my new Monster Inspirations that i got brand new for half off (great deal). Phone reboots. Comes back. It has a circle with a slash across it (cancel sign) where my signal used to be. Im looking through settings when it reboots again. I soon realize every set amount of time (about 87 seconds) it just crashes and reboots. Flash a different rom. No signal. Reboots. Go back to old rom. Same problem. Attempt clockworkmod restore. No md5sum (it says mismatch.... Clockworkmod recovery is the most POS, stupid, moronic recovery have ever witnessed in my life. the status 7 fails and no ability to say F**K IT, IDC about md5sum JUST FLASH IT BECAUSE THIS IS AN EMERGENCY is just plain ignorant development.) I cant restore. I cant flash a different rom. No one i know knows what to do. No one on the internet seems to have the same problem. I could lose my job if i dont have a fully functioning phone by tomorrow with email and call capabilities.
I have no idea how to use odin aside from when i rooted my note 2 as i cant actually find a guide for it. i have a mame0142.zip thats apparently a AT&T modem i can flash and might save the day. I have no idea how to use it. I'm expected to know everything about everything. No begnngers guides. Im also out of state, in Florida, and now without a phone. Luckily i have a laptop, so i might have a chance at this. This is actually an emergency. I literally cannot sleep tonight until i know my phone is going to be working tomorrow. If its not i'll be driving over it with my Beetle and going to buy an i5 because i can't wait. I need my phone for my job. Also i have a lot of respect for the people of XDA, but please don't call me stupid, tech illiterate, a sheep, or blind because i would rather switch to Apple then have my phone have a critical failure from listening to Mixzing.
I feel like flashing the stock At&T i317 Modem/ Radio will fix the problem. Anyone who knows wher ei can find that and then what to do with that once i get it would greatly be appreciated.
I've no idea what caused this or how to fix it. I really, really, really dont care what has to be done, but my phone NEEDS to work by tomorrow.I dont care what rom/kernel/ anything it has to run to get it back to working, because if i cant get it fixed it's just going right in the trash. ANY help would be appreciated. I really don't want to spend money right now.

Thanks, it's certainly better then nothing. If it works its good enough for me. I can always re-root it later. My phones so glitched it still may not work though. Ill update if this works or not. Thanks again.

Im not seeing anything here thats going to do anything for me aside from flash a stock rom, and its not going too smoothly either. Can you send me a link to the stock Modem/ Radio as well? it seems like thats the big issue.

Awesome, thank you. now, I havent seen a good thread on what exactly you do with a Modem, or at least not one for a beginner. Can i flash it from CWM same as a kernel or rom or is this something that needs special treatment on a computer or something?

That modem is CWM/TWRP flashable. A good check is normally to open up the zip if it has a META-INF its normally a CWM file. If it has a .pda ect its an odin file

The note 2 is an excellent device....and worthy of the credits it receives...
The beauty is it's simplicity....
After all ....you've managed to take a borked up device and flash the entire OS in minutes...
A feat that you couldn't dream of with apple...

[Q] Toroplus vs. Stock

Ok, here's a head scratcher (but then again, I have lice lol). Anyhow, Im having problems with my "new" SPH-L700. My last Sprint Gnex ate itself, and now Im not sure Im pretty safe in assuming Im on Stock. But Im not sure why the Toroplus ROMs I download, seem to not want to install. The only thing that DID stick was I corrected the radios as when it was given to me, it had two different radios so Im on 4.2.1 GA02 and they both match now. Im fully rooted (confirmed by Root Checker Pro) reset, and everytime Ive tried to install any ROMs they send my poor little andy on his back with a mean old red triangle coming out his poor belly. and the info tells me that the file is bad. Ive tried this with at least 3-4 ROMS and it's the same result.
Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Black out your IMEI. Or just delete the status screenshot; it's unnecessary. Are you using a custom recovery? What recovery and what version? What ROMs are you trying to flash? If you unzip the ROM what happens? Do any have md5sums?

Thank you for the info. I think it's done.
Im using CWM v. 6.0.3.6
Ive tried the new PAC-MAN 4.3, codename Android, Carbon & AOKP the closest thing I can come across that's close to an mdnsnd found that in AOKP and Carbon. Ive since deleted codename and Carbon Is there any other info you need? Im not a developer or anything. Never really had many problems once I got the hang of it. Usually I can figure it out, but this has gotten me conf*ckulated

Oh yeah, sorry, when I try to install it, I get a bunch of mumbo jumbo that basically says its a (bad) file and it aborts the install.

Unzip one of the ROMs. What do you see? Folders? Files?
By md5sum I mean, do the ROM devs provide a md5sum? The purpose is to hash your downloaded copy and make sure it matches the dev's version.
I'm asking both questions to figure out whether the downloads are corrupt.

Im sorry I didnt get back to you sooner, I fell asleep. I cant rest til I know my baby (yes, I said it LOL), is all squared away. So usually I just pass out from exhaustion.
Anyway, when I try to install any of those ROMS i get this:
Finding update package...
Opening update package..
E: can't open /sdcard/o/then the name of the rom.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
Then that's all she wrote. Im SO glad I remembered to do a backup before I started messing with my phone THIS time. (I forget a lot of times).
Ive checked all three of my ROMS, and I dont find any md5sums in any of them. It's very strange that either my computer would either corrupt or download 3 ROMS that I feel are usually pretty reliable. I DO however, have a "hash" .txt file in my phone's program. Might that be the trouble? Or is that supposed to be there when I root? Crazy SH*T man. I dunno. I thank you SO very much for all your help. This is quite frustrating. What's a dummy to do? LOL. If I came off snappy to you in my last post, it wasnt meant to be that way. I was just wondering if there was anymore info i could help you with. Im not so good with words sometimes, and I come off as an ass. I AM very appreciated of all your time and help. Doesnt seem like anyone in here really likes to help, and I get a bit cranky when I ask a question in a thread in here and I get made fun of instead of getting any help. what ever file your tried to install did not download correctly try downloding the file again and then transfer it to device and flash again ......i had the same problem and this worked for me !

Thanx a bunch ice blue. I've been doing that over and over. I'm gonna try to just DL the files directly to my phone instead if going through my computer. That's going to be my last try before I take this stupid refurb skeet shooting And the phone will NOT be given a gun. LOL!

I've done that 3 times so now this time I get my send dates telling me that I sent stuff on the 31st of December 1969. I don't get it. I am in stock right now. Maybe I should just Odin toroplus instead of just staying in stock? Im just going nutso here, trying everything I can think of starting over from scratch every time. Eesh! But PLEASE keep the suggestions coming, hoping to get this damn thing done right. Soto tallys point in time I'm ready to duct tape this baby to the rear tire of my bike and do donuts on it at about 75 mph for an hour or so. LOL! :banghead: If anyone has ANY ideas, I'm totally open to try anything.
