[Q] Google Now on stock Jelly Bean HOX - HTC One X

*/ I have searched and haven't found a thread or topic that relates to my question, so I'm starting a new one */
So I have just upgraded to the official JB update for HOX last night and one of the most anticipated features that I've been waiting for is Google Now. I have activated and played around with the new voice search but then I realize that this is NOT the Google Now I have read about.
There are no cards, and even on the settings where screen captures by others show travel, appointment, etc, on the HOX it only shows Voice, Phone Search, Privacy & accounts.
Am I missing something here? Or is Google Now simply not available on the stock/official HOX Jelly Bean?
Any input is welcome.

It should at least bring up the weather for you on a card.
Also Google Now learns from your searches and intergrates that into cards for you - the more you search the more it will learn and revolve around you.
For example - search for football/ baseball scores of a specific team enough times and eventually Google now will bring up cards telling you when the next game is and after the game will bring up a scorecard.

Thanks for the quick response Wolverine. Like i said there was no cards, not even a mention of google now. On the SETTINGS (3 dots on bottom right corner) there was only Voice, Phone Search, Privacy & accounts. Google Now settings should be the first on that list above Voice.
Upon further, though difficult, googling I found out that Google Now only works on English (US) and English (UK) system language. My phone bought in Asia only has English (Indonesia), English (Singapore), and so on.
Downloaded "Set Locale and Language" free app from Google Play, set system language on English (US), rebooted, and there it was, Google Now in all its glorious cards.
Hope this helps others with same problem.

Bing Maps is useless

Today I tried to use Bing Maps for ANYTHING.
Poland. Country where WP7 is officially sold.
Well this native app is a total useless crap.
The only thing I can find there is cities. THAT'S IT!
It is not able to find ANY STREET neither any place I am looking for.
Nothing.
So in fact it's a useless ****. The question is:
1. When Google will provide a WORKING app for WP7
2. Or do we know when MS will move it's ass and support countries they sell devices in?!
Yes, yes it is.
Oh and to answer your question.
1. I am guessing that Google doesn't really help the competition. There Google search app looks really bad on WP7.
2. Most likely, it will come with an update when they decided turn by turn navigation. Pretty certain of that because the website shows street names.

I agree that it is very limited, but I have found a way to make it work in Sweden. I have to set System locale abd Browser & search language to English (United Kingdom). Then you search for adresses with this exact formula: Streetname number, city, country. With these settings and formula, Bing maps have found every adress I've wanted in Sweden.

Thanks. I have my device set to these values.
But nothing. It says cannot find a desired place. The only thing it understands is cities. Even when I write it with the formula you showed.
BTW, you write it with comas?
Doesn't matter, whatever I do - nothing.
Pure crap.

Thats very strange... Whitout comas, it works 90% of the times. With comas, it works every time.
The maps are, however, very outdated. Buildings and streets that are three years old does show up in the searches, but they are not shown in the satelite pictures.
It might suck for you, but here in the UK, it works absolutely perfectly.

ditto
Obviously can't comment outside of UK, but it does suck if it doesn't work in other countries without cocking about
It absolutely doesn't work besides city name search.
Doesn't find anything in Poland.
That makes me reconsider using this OS.
I have no slight piece of information when this will ever happen.
There will be google maps at some point. Google has a different business model to most other companies, it doesn't matter that they have android the idea is that they push as many google services out to as many people as possible (and that will include Windows Phone 7 users).
More users = more viewers/clicks on google ads = more revenue. About 80% of google's revenue comes from Advertising.

Yes, it is. The whole system is crap right now. And it won't be anything good for a whole friggin year. I've been waiting for voice nav for a long time and then I find out it won't make it in for at least a year, if even then.
have you tried using 'justanothermaps' i think its called, its based on google maps...might work better for you
Bing Maps sucks indeed
Bing Maps is just a terrible program...A real shame actually
I cannot use it in my country.
Bing Maps sucks...
Bing maps is FAIL! they should take it off as it destroys the platform. in my city, it only shows 4 roads! we need google maps now!

Yeah, but I don't want to screw my PC.
And I don't use the PC version to buy apps but the phone one.
The U.S.
I can't believe Microsoft would sell a phone and not fully support the area that they are selling it in. It seems like something small and extremely stupid Microsoft would do. Hopefully they will fix that along with the many other little things that they decided to leave out on their system. From the U.S. standpoint though, I have got to say I actually like Bing maps a whole lot more than Google maps. I have used Android for a long time and I use everything Google. I decided to go with WP7, because it was newest and I loved the size of the HD7. Bing maps is amazing, it is what free GPS programs should be. I hope other companies take a look at this and I hope Microsoft updates maps to make it a worthwhile application everywhere.

[Q] [ Q ] is there a way to get A voice action instead of voice search in Jelly Bean?

I know it should be the same and we can call it voice action or voice search
but I tryed for example to set the timer and when I say " set timer for 10 minutes " it poped up the google seach and while it should set the alarm
am I missing something here or there a way to do that
I am on MoDaCo rom
It just worked for me by saying set alarm for 8am.
Most Voice Actions don't seem to work unless you have both the phone and voice language settings set to English(US).
Setting the alarm was definitely one of the ones which doesn't work if you're using another language.
Annoying as ****, and I wish Google would fix it. I don't know how they can claim to have launched voice actions in other countries when these basic things don't work. So now I have to put on a faux American accent while talking to my phone!
How are your Elvis impressions?
yes man you are right, finally got it worked:good:
I totally agree with you and hoping this got fixed soon
thanks brother

You may be right, but please don't forget that the version we are running is still nothing but a developers *preview* which has not been intended to be supplied to Non-US users to start with.
I am quite confident that by the time Google releases the final version in mid July, the will have implemented voice action- and also cards-support for other languages as well.
Cheers
CT
In my case I didn't need both set to English (US) to work.. following works for me:
OS level - Settings > Language & input > Language = English (US)
Google Now - Settings > Voice > Language = English (Australia)
*confirmed*
Thanks for the tip! I was trying to find a solution for an hour. I have 2 phones running Android 4.2, and I was wondering why one of them will set the timer and alarm correctly, while the other 1 will not. So this is confirmed: you DO need to set both the phone language and voice action language to English (US) for all voice actions to work.

Google Now in metric

I have a european Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 Jellybean. Ive noticed that for some reason the entire phone needs to be set to US English. Now just the Google Now application; for it to use the new less artifical TTS. I prefer UK English.
Not to mention voice recognition and results on Google Now operate in 12-hour clock and imperial units. Both of which annoy me greatly.
So let me split up my question to make answering this easier.
1. Is there a way to keep my phone language set to UK English and use the new TTS?
2. Is there a way to make Google Now understand metric units. Example "Remind me to do the laundry at 22-hundred" rather than 10-pm.
3. Is there a way to make Google now SPEAK metric units. It does Celsius, but thats about it, no 24 hour or clock, and it always shows feet and that stuff as primary units.

I have things set to American (Region set as Malaysia/Singapore, commonwealth countries that speak English and only use metric) and I can get metric every where? Also in Google Now offline voice TTS there's a UK English pack you can download.
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24-hour_clock Military time, you may understand why this wasn't at the top of the list to be included yet. I'm sure it will come with time.
3. I have heard it say things in metric before but it's incomplete. Also do try to download the UK English voice pack, I think that helps.
The thing that over-rides all of this is that Google Now is still a work in progress and we should all see consistent expansion of it over time as they add more words/interpretation rules/other languages(which will require expanding on metric)

[Guide] Google Now: Setup and Usage Tips

I’ve noticed that in most development threads there are users complaining about not being able to get Google Now working correctly. I thought I’d share the steps I’ve taken to setup Google Now, and it’s been working perfectly for me.
Before we begin there are two things to clear up. Firstly, in order for Google Now to work properly you are going to need to be OK with easing off on several privacy settings. You will need to enable Web History and Location Sharing; so if you are uncomfortable with this or are a bit of a privacy nut (nothing wrong with that!) then Google Now is not for you, and will never work as intended.
Secondly, Google Now takes time to gather information about you before it will start working as you expect. This means you need to use it! Anytime you are doing a Google search from your phone, use Google Now; when you’re waiting for a bus, open Google Now, etc. After a few hours/days (depending on how much you use it) it will begin to display your Now Cards correctly.
Prerequisites:
1.A Jelly Bean custom ROM (e.g. TeamNDVRu CM10)
2.Google Now enabled (obviously)
3.Google Maps installed
4.At present Google Now will only work correctly when using English as the default language (US/UK both work)
Before using Google Now
Enable Web History:
1.We need to enable ‘Web History’ for our Google searches. From your desktop/laptop go to your Google Account settings (click your username/email address on the Google homepage and go to Account).
2.Select ‘Products’ then scroll down and select ‘Web History’. Ensure this is enabled, if paused click ‘Resume’. Web History is now enabled
Enable Location Sharing:
1.Open Latitude (found in your app drawer). Go to settings.
2.Make sure ‘Location Reporting’ is set to ‘Your location is reported automatically’
3.Make sure ‘Enable Location History’ is ticked. You can set the ‘Check In’ options as you wish, I don’t use this feature myself.
4.Open Google Maps. You should see your Latitude location centred on the screen. Click your avatar (the square pic pointing out your location). Select your name. Select ‘Location Settings from the pop-up menu.
5.Press the menu key and select ‘Change home location’ – enter your home address. Then press the menu key again and select ‘Change work location’ – enter your work location (this can also be your School/University if you want)
6.Location Sharing is now set up for Google Now
Google Now Setup:
1.Open Google Now and follow the on-screen instructions. Select ‘Yes I’m in’ when prompted.
2.Press the menu key, select ‘Settings’
3.Select ‘Now Cards’ – you can set this up as you wish, depending on what features you want to use and how you want to use them. It’s pretty self explanatory.
4.Go back and select ‘Voice’. Set language to ‘English UK’ or ‘English US’ (At present only English as default will work).
5.Select ‘Download offline speech recognition’. Go to the download tab and download ‘English UK’ language if you want to use it (US is default). – it’s a small download
6.Go back and select ‘Privacy and accounts’. Make sure ‘Location and Google Search’ + ‘Show recent searches’ + Search on google.com’ are all ticked.
7.Go back and select ‘Phone search’ – set this as you wish, if you don’t want Google Now to search your contacts for instance, then un-tick it.
8.Google Now is now setup properly, start using it!
Notes/Tips
-If you use Google Apps for Business you will need to perform an extra step. Login and go to Settings, scroll down and select Mobile. There will be a checkbox ‘Use Google Now’, make sure this is ticked.
-To have the Calendar card work properly you will need to set times and locations for your appointments/reminders. E.g. you’re doing an early shift in work, so set your appointment location to your work address, then set the times to the shift start/end times rather than ‘All Day’. The card will popup a few hours before your shift and should bring the Traffic card along with it to tell you how long it might take you t o travel/when to leave to arrive on time.
-Depending on where you live the Public Transport card may not behave as you would expect. In the area of London I live for instance, the Now Card will only show when I’m near major stations/bus stops and will not show for every single one. This may vary around the world, or even in different areas of the same city.
-Some Now Cards may never show, they are all situational (you can set the Weather to always show, but it’s the only one). It depends entirely on how you use Google Now. E.g. if you never search for your football teams results or fixtures, then the Sport Card is never going to show.
-When out and about, turn GPS/WiFi on to get a better fix on your location, helps with the Public Transport card especially.
Hopefully this gets some of you going with Google Now. Some of the steps may be superfluous but, again, this is just what worked for me after many frustrating hours of trying to figure it out!
To do: Add screenshots
Nice write up Man...Have you had any trouble with GNow adding unwanted sports teams to your cards? I can't seem to shake the LA Galaxy soccer club. I don't like soccer, much less the Galaxy.
Thanks for this mate, its awesome. I know this question may seem like I'm noob, which is because I am. I have had a little search but not sure if there is a way to get Google Now working on a sense rom on 4.0.4 such as ARHD?
Don't hate, just asking a noob question
Thanks
I can't read black on dark grey, there's not enough contrast. If you're going to set the font colour (please don't) to something, can you also set the background colour so there is some contrast? Cheers.
Perhaps I'm just missing something, but I followed these instructions to the letter and regardless, every time I open up the Google Now settings the top right on/off "switch" has defaulted back to off. Anybody having similar problems?
Good write up, thank you! Installed the new Maximus ROM last night, got a cool Google Now surprise this morning.
Looked up the web sites of two computer stores and a restaurant menu on my desktop computer. Then picked up my phone, and cards had popped up showing directions to the stores and restaurant, with travel time estimates and traffic updates. Pretty cool!
Good selection of sports teams on there now, I'll be stoked when they expand the service with more offerings.
Just installed the Maximus ROM too and used your guide to set mine up. This thing is something else. LOL. Very impressive
Is anyone having issues with sports fixtures displaying the wrong time zone on GN? I have a card for my team, but when I press the card and am directed to Google the fixture times are in US Eastern Time even though the team and I are in the UK

Hi,
you probably swiped away the card, for that moment the card is gone, but somehow it will turn up once you open up Google Now again. if not, sometimes, a reboot of your phone will show up the card afterwards., at least, for me this helps! :good::cyclops:

Just have a minor question, hope somebody can help me with that. I was wondering if Google Now needs Auto Sync been turned on permanently. It does save me alot of battery and data usage if I can leave it off. I think personally that Google will collect information anyway wih Now because I have my location settings turned on.
Can somebody tell me??
Thanks and I wil def follow this Thread!
My tip is to disable the useless POS. All it does is rinse your battery with constant wakelocks!
Until they improve it and make it vaguely useful it will be switched off.
And ppl like me,who can't change language to English US or UK ... What we to do?! ^^

Now commands problem
I have my android system in english but i have configured google now voice recognition in spanish. The problem comes when I want a command like weather, questions, etc. Voice recognition captures correctly what I said in spanish but all it does is search for that text in Google, even if it is a command. The problem is solved when I change my voice recognition to english. Also tried to set my android system in spanish along with voice recognition in spanish and commands worked.
So my question... ¿how can i have my system and voice recognition in different languages using voice commands?
Thanks

Hi James,
sorry for my late reaction! I think it depends on if your Chrome Browser is the default browser on your device. When it is en and it's still giving you that message, I should check if it appears all the time or just when you're starting Google Now. If it does, maybe you should re install Chrome and try it again! :fingers-crossed:
Here it's working fine!
Good luck fella!

Jeroen

That's because Google Now is only configured to give you reply or a card, whenever you put the voice command in English. Other languages are not supported yet to give you a spoken answer or card. You should put everything in English and then you'll see it works. Otherwise you should wait untill they have support for voice commands in Spanish!
Good luck!

Hey, lately I was wondering to start use Google Now but there's one thing I'm worried about the battery usage, does it consume a lot of battery? Because I always get to 5% battery in the end of the day..
The drain comes from the constant location reports needed for GN to work properly. They cause enormous amount of wakes so yes, it drains.

[Q] Question on [ROM][Cool Sense][5 April]Cool Droid v3|2.3.4|FASTEST|Data++/Stock

First of all I want to thank everybody whos making efforts so that our beloved Desire survive through out these years!!
I am a Desire owner for more than three years and I could say that I have tried nearly anything on my device.
Currently I am using this Rom with the exactly configuration written by the user.
As the user Tonyp has written in the post, that exact setup is working really good and without any major issues. I have only 3 spots that i would like to point out:
1st When I am call directly from the address book a contact that is stored without the national prefix (+30 Greece) the phone adds automatically the prefix +1 (maybe US I don't really know), so this make the call goes wrong.
2nd From Optimo Settings (included in the Rom) I don't have the choise to dissapear the battery icon and leavy only the numbers.
3rd As it already pointed out, in the Rosie Options, the right button choise for the shortcut isn't working if you select anything else bit the internet browser.
I would really like to hear your thoughts about the things that i've pointed out before, and again to thank everyone that is contributing to the development of our device!!
As an addition to the previous post I have found out that some appz that they use the google account to log in such as youtube and quicktime, they sign in feature doesn't work, although I have install the latest google play services and the syncing of the google account works fine.
Thanks in advance and please if some wants to copy my 2 posts to the development thread, be my guest!!!
