Google Now in metric - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a european Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 Jellybean. Ive noticed that for some reason the entire phone needs to be set to US English. Now just the Google Now application; for it to use the new less artifical TTS. I prefer UK English.
Not to mention voice recognition and results on Google Now operate in 12-hour clock and imperial units. Both of which annoy me greatly.
So let me split up my question to make answering this easier.
1. Is there a way to keep my phone language set to UK English and use the new TTS?
2. Is there a way to make Google Now understand metric units. Example "Remind me to do the laundry at 22-hundred" rather than 10-pm.
3. Is there a way to make Google now SPEAK metric units. It does Celsius, but thats about it, no 24 hour or clock, and it always shows feet and that stuff as primary units.

I have things set to American (Region set as Malaysia/Singapore, commonwealth countries that speak English and only use metric) and I can get metric every where? Also in Google Now offline voice TTS there's a UK English pack you can download.
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24-hour_clock Military time, you may understand why this wasn't at the top of the list to be included yet. I'm sure it will come with time.
3. I have heard it say things in metric before but it's incomplete. Also do try to download the UK English voice pack, I think that helps.
The thing that over-rides all of this is that Google Now is still a work in progress and we should all see consistent expansion of it over time as they add more words/interpretation rules/other languages(which will require expanding on metric)

How do I set Google Maps to use metric measurements?
I can't find any setting for it. We don't use primitive measurements here in Oz and any help will be appreciated

This is a problem with maps in general. Its.the same on a pc. Google use your location to set the type of units . Is it the same on your pc?

Still no go, also tried setting the locale, and still doesn't work. Does anyone who have an android phone, show distances in metric, when you use the ruler tool, and also touching a point on a street to bring up the info?
Driving directions are in KM though, everything else is in miles.
Bump for great JUSTICE!!!!
So far Google Maps 4.4 is out and THERE IS STILL NO WAY TO SET IT TO METRIC! I really can't believe it. I used MoreLocale2 to change it to en-AU, still STONE AGE measurements, but when I set it to a non-English language, it shows in metric.
Seriously, does anyone know how to fix this? I've searched everywhere. It has happened in both the default Telstra 2.1, and also the WWE Froyo official ROM.
I seriously feel sorry for fellow Aussies, Kiwis, Singaporeans, Canadians and any other English speaking country who uses metric measurements, who are forced to live with this stupid oversight.
Sorry, but it's just plain annoying.
Miles and yards ftw!!!
Aren't car speedos in Oz in MPH?? Thought they were...EDIT: No, you're backwards on KMH
No Aussie cars have their speedometers in km/h, and we ditched MPH back in 1974. All road signs including speed limits are in metric. Plus I grew up with metric measurements too.
Backwards? Pah. How many feet in a yard? How many yards to a mile?
Better yet how many countries use caveman measurements? I count four. The Poms, The Yanks, Liberians, and Burmese.
Now let's stop trolling and get back on the rails please?
Does anyone have a fix for my problem? My phone is already rooted if thats any help.
cheers

BUMP! I take it you just can't do it?
Well the new version of maps are out but still no fix. I can't seem to force the maps app to en-au to try and set the damn thing to metric as it defaults to en-gb. I did manage to get rid of the American terminology in Places at least but it still measures in miles.
I wish someone would help, surely there has to be someone who would know or even tried instead of cocky people who hasn't been or lived outside of the UK or US and give me smartarse comments.

Hard to believe that no one has an answer. My Galaxy S2 shows it correctly in km where my Xoom shows it in miles. Googling gave nothing and still couldn't find an answer
Mate i'm from Oz and my maps show correctly in km.. Not sure how though sorry :/
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
it used to show Metric units till update 6.10
back when it was metric I set the language to English(China)
Hope this helps
Go to settings --> general settings--> international--> Region Format = United States
Sorry to resurrect a very old thread - I was searching for an answer on this and have found a workaround:
Sign out of your normal Google ID, then choose a domain country that uses the units you want to use. I am in the UK and usually sign in to Google.co.uk. If I log in to Google.fr (France), then sign in, I can still see my saved places, etc., but the units are now in metres.

Bing Maps is useless

Today I tried to use Bing Maps for ANYTHING.
Poland. Country where WP7 is officially sold.
Well this native app is a total useless crap.
The only thing I can find there is cities. THAT'S IT!
It is not able to find ANY STREET neither any place I am looking for.
Nothing.
So in fact it's a useless ****. The question is:
1. When Google will provide a WORKING app for WP7
2. Or do we know when MS will move it's ass and support countries they sell devices in?!
Yes, yes it is.
Oh and to answer your question.
1. I am guessing that Google doesn't really help the competition. There Google search app looks really bad on WP7.
2. Most likely, it will come with an update when they decided turn by turn navigation. Pretty certain of that because the website shows street names.

I agree that it is very limited, but I have found a way to make it work in Sweden. I have to set System locale abd Browser & search language to English (United Kingdom). Then you search for adresses with this exact formula: Streetname number, city, country. With these settings and formula, Bing maps have found every adress I've wanted in Sweden.

Thanks. I have my device set to these values.
But nothing. It says cannot find a desired place. The only thing it understands is cities. Even when I write it with the formula you showed.
BTW, you write it with comas?
Doesn't matter, whatever I do - nothing.
Pure crap.

Thats very strange... Whitout comas, it works 90% of the times. With comas, it works every time.
The maps are, however, very outdated. Buildings and streets that are three years old does show up in the searches, but they are not shown in the satelite pictures.
It might suck for you, but here in the UK, it works absolutely perfectly.

Obviously can't comment outside of UK, but it does suck if it doesn't work in other countries without cocking about
It absolutely doesn't work besides city name search.
Doesn't find anything in Poland.
That makes me reconsider using this OS.
I have no slight piece of information when this will ever happen.
There will be google maps at some point. Google has a different business model to most other companies, it doesn't matter that they have android the idea is that they push as many google services out to as many people as possible (and that will include Windows Phone 7 users).
More users = more viewers/clicks on google ads = more revenue. About 80% of google's revenue comes from Advertising.

Yes, it is. The whole system is crap right now. And it won't be anything good for a whole friggin year. I've been waiting for voice nav for a long time and then I find out it won't make it in for at least a year, if even then.
have you tried using 'justanothermaps' i think its called, its based on google maps...might work better for you
Bing Maps sucks indeed
Bing Maps is just a terrible program...A real shame actually
I cannot use it in my country.
Bing Maps sucks...
Bing maps is FAIL! they should take it off as it destroys the platform. in my city, it only shows 4 roads! we need google maps now!

Yeah, but I don't want to screw my PC.
And I don't use the PC version to buy apps but the phone one.
The U.S.
I can't believe Microsoft would sell a phone and not fully support the area that they are selling it in. It seems like something small and extremely stupid Microsoft would do. Hopefully they will fix that along with the many other little things that they decided to leave out on their system. From the U.S. standpoint though, I have got to say I actually like Bing maps a whole lot more than Google maps. I have used Android for a long time and I use everything Google. I decided to go with WP7, because it was newest and I loved the size of the HD7. Bing maps is amazing, it is what free GPS programs should be. I hope other companies take a look at this and I hope Microsoft updates maps to make it a worthwhile application everywhere.

[Great Voice] IVONA TTS

Hi,
i am sure most of you know (and hate) Android`s Standart Text-to-Speech ENgine Pico...
I discovered a new TTS Engine that is free (until november 15th)
It`s called IVONA TTS (Market Link)
After a 200MB Download you get the best artificial voice i`ve ever heard of and it works for Navigation and everything else.
It`s available in German, English, Polish, Spanish and French.
I didn`t make this app so i cant answer questions but i just wanted to let you all know and finally let you enjoy Navigation on your Phones
BTW It's a Polish app, long ago was using it on my PC...
just installed and loving it! downloaded word player for it to so my books can be read to me.
Nice find mate!
deleted
i donĀ“t know but i doubt it. This is a really high-class product and i will gladly pay for it
Nice, downloading and testing it out. 200mb is rather large though. :x
According to Market page:
"This Free beta version has full functionality and will work without any limitations till November 15th, 2011."
This pisses me off, I can install the engine fine which upon launching, sends me to a web page of voices I can install. Clicking on English Amy takes me to the Android market application but trying to install the English Amy app just results in the Market app just constantly trying to load.
Other languages seem to be fine.
I'm a massive fan of Android but the market is just buggy as hell. Applications telling me they have updates but don't show an update button or the update still showing even after installing the new version.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
what you describe is a market update and not the app itself.
have you tried deleting data from the market app?
i imagine that most of us won't use this when the beta runs out... the prices they want to charge are CRAZY!!!! Over $50 for a voice is crazy talk, (see what i did there with that pun!)
I got a discount email from them for 50 euro off and they said it's 33% of the regular price = 75 euro for the real app. So i'll definitely pass this one, cause I hate TTS apps.
But I gotta admit, this one is INCREDIBLY good.
How does it compare to samsung tts? pico tts is absolute garbage but you can force apps to use samsung instead.
or is this really out of this world and so much better?

well since samsung engine is only avaiable for chinese and korean and you have to use pico otherwise there are worlds in between.
considering the hefty price tag of 50$ i have to say that i will not gladly pay for this anymore
If it was coupled with semi-A.I. I'd pay 100 for it right away.
well it works with our pre built in vlingo voice control. it only replaces half of the sentences though (i guess some of the standart commands are pre-recorded)

[Q] Google Now on stock Jelly Bean HOX

*/ I have searched and haven't found a thread or topic that relates to my question, so I'm starting a new one */
So I have just upgraded to the official JB update for HOX last night and one of the most anticipated features that I've been waiting for is Google Now. I have activated and played around with the new voice search but then I realize that this is NOT the Google Now I have read about.
There are no cards, and even on the settings where screen captures by others show travel, appointment, etc, on the HOX it only shows Voice, Phone Search, Privacy & accounts.
Am I missing something here? Or is Google Now simply not available on the stock/official HOX Jelly Bean?
Any input is welcome.

It should at least bring up the weather for you on a card.
Also Google Now learns from your searches and intergrates that into cards for you - the more you search the more it will learn and revolve around you.
For example - search for football/ baseball scores of a specific team enough times and eventually Google now will bring up cards telling you when the next game is and after the game will bring up a scorecard.
Thanks for the quick response Wolverine. Like i said there was no cards, not even a mention of google now. On the SETTINGS (3 dots on bottom right corner) there was only Voice, Phone Search, Privacy & accounts. Google Now settings should be the first on that list above Voice.
Upon further, though difficult, googling I found out that Google Now only works on English (US) and English (UK) system language. My phone bought in Asia only has English (Indonesia), English (Singapore), and so on.
Downloaded "Set Locale and Language" free app from Google Play, set system language on English (US), rebooted, and there it was, Google Now in all its glorious cards.
Hope this helps others with same problem.

Voice / Speech recognition on Xiaomi Max (best without Google server access)

Hello,
I've seen some videos where the have the "voice input" option under Settings - Additional settings - Languages & input - SPEECH
But I only have "Text-to-speech output" there as an option.
Is it possible for me to use voice input (so that I can dictate texts and my mobile would write it)?
Best if this app/setting/possibility would not use Google since I live in China and would not like to make things more complicated and slower by using a VPN etc.
Thanks,
Chris
Hello.
You may try the Gboard, the Google Keyboard, which claims to add the "voice typing" feature. After the install, download the language files via its settings, and select the offline recognition. It may still use Google's servers if access exists (and which is more accurate for long transcriptions versus just commands) and use the local language files otherwise.
Note the voice recognition is OK, but not feature complete for lengthy transcription. It has very limited punctuation marks, new-line and new-paragraph often are not understood, errors are a pain to find (it underlines items with low confidence), making corrections are a pain, and the user learning seems non-existent. For example,
say, "I read a red book." gives, "I read a Redbook." (always)
say, "I read a blue book." gives, "I read a Blue book." (often)
Even with multiple corrections, over multiple days, the input and output above are still the same.
It works well for short transcription in SMS and short emails with mostly common words.

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation.
I was planning to use it to "write" my blog when I'm somewhere on the phone without a laptop. But after reading your description, it doesn't sound too promising.
It costs nothing to try it, except for a few minutes to install and run and 15 minutes to evaluate. You might find that the pro(s) outweigh the con(s), for you. My comments were only meant to inform not dissuade.
I use it to capture ideas while mobile, of which I can index and search.
Successful speech recognition require training to the specific user or a large enough dataset to compare to. This is why cloud-based approaches are en vogue. Microsoft Cortana (which recently gained parity with humans), Google Assistant, Samsung's Bixby, Nuance Dragon, are all cloud only. Google Voice Typing (included with Gboard) and CMU's Pocket Sphinx (for developers) are the only device based ones I have seen.
