Abysmal battery life on JB - HTC One X

I updated to JB last night, fully charged my phone, unplugged it and then went to sleep. When I woke up I only had 50% battery left, previously on ICS when the phone was idle over night it used between 2-5% max.
I then charged the phone again this morning and now 3hrs 10mins later, I'm already down to 66% and I have hardly used the phone. It's showing as:
Whatsapp 36% !?!
Android OS 17%
Android System 16%
Facebook 7%
HTC Sense 6%
Mediaserver 4%
Camera 3%
Is anyone else having any problems? With ICS I would charge my phone in the morning at work and it would easily last until the following morning, unless I was heavily using Facebook or playing a game. I thought JB was supposed to improve the battery life, not make it worse.

Give it a few charging cycles before complaining.
Have you rebooted the phone since the update.?

Some apps still are not quite complitable with jb,especially with new HTC sense libs or api.

Not me personally, but it did reboot by itself randomly. It's never done that on ICS. I think I'll do as you suggest, give it another day or so. If it still hasn't improved I'll try a factory reset.
What does the Power Saver option actually do? Does it switch off all data sync, lower the screen brightness etc?

Do a full wipe. Some apps could be screwed up while updating.

Winner.
Power saving saps my power.
3 hours and I lost 20% quick. Turn off power saver and I'm actually saving power.

Hmm I actually think power saver is an amazing feature. 2 hours gone by and I just lost 6% battery (normal usage: message, whatsapp, maps, xda). Even though typing felt weird because no vibrations.

I;ve read some people said the alarm not ringing when in Power Saving mode.. CMIIW.

I think they have paired the app with the screen time and gives you a total percentage.
No screen time hours is pretty ****ty.

Most likely an app that isn't backing off nicely. When an app finds your data/Wi-Fi is off is probably getting in a panic that it can't call the mothership (or download some ads!) and is waking your phone or keeping it awake constantly while it tries and tries.
That app would cause the same issue if you turned off data and Wi-Fi manually.

Phil

Try Nova, I personally find it better than Apex.

So I installed android revolution 15.0 and the battery doesn't seem to be good at all... Don't know if its a JB thing or this particual Rom. When I check the usage number on power section, it says android os has a 2 hr wake up time... I also installed betterbattery stats and I am getting this wl1271_wake under the kernel section and this weird surfaceflinger under the processes section... Any insight would be helpful, thanks

I performed a factory reset last night - well the new equivalent in JB, which is go to backup and reset the phone.
After the reset, I setup my Google, Exchange, Hotmail and Facebook sync. The only app I installed was Whatsapp. Managed to get the phone to 72% charge before unplugging and going to sleep, I also made sure the initial syncs had all completed before unplugging the charger. This time it went from 72% to 30%, so 40% used while sleeping instead of 50%.
Looking at the stats, I think the battery counters are screwed up. When I first checked this morning, it showed Whatsapp had used just 2%. 10 mins later after a couple of messages, the battery had dropped to 28% and Whatsapp then showed as 32%.
Android OS never used to show much usage, the screen was always the thirstiest, but this morning it Android OS showed as ~30% which then dropped to 22% after using Whatsapp. Perhaps this is due to the screen time being integrated into the app counters as mickfitz said.
As you can see from the pic below, Whatsapp doesn't appear to be keeping the phone alive during the night as Phil suggested:
Surely others here use Whatsapp? Is no one else getting massive battery drain since the OTA JB update?
The only other things I can think of are the company policy settings which are applied to the phone when I setup my Exchange account, or Google Now - but for this I'm just using the default settings.
[EDIT] I'm not using Power Saver mode btw and I don't want to if it shuts off data while idle - it will mean I don't receive Whatsapp alerts
[EDIT 2] I've just had a proper look at the 2nd screenshot. The line chart doesn't match up with the battery % shown. It was definitely at 72% when I went to sleep yet the chart only shows 50%. I'll leave it charging all evening and check the line chart to make sure it's at 100% then give it another go tonight.

not sure if this app will help us to get a clearer picture of what is happening..

Battery life just terrible, need since help plz!!

As title says guys, I don't no why but my battery life is just really bad since I moved from stock 2.1 Rom to custom ROMs :-(
Is it my phone? I can't work pig wot it is. I checked the battery usage #*#*4636*#*#) and it seems the Android system is using A LOT of it. I tried charging with phone off, clearing battery stats, not overcharging, but just can't resolve this issue.
Also, I have sync set to update manually and have mobile internet off always, only on wen needed. Same with WiFi. Screen is on auto and time off screen lock set to 30 seconds
I am using OpenDesire sense Rom
Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks

I could feel WiFi siginal of 2.2 is much better that stock 2.1,
I suppose that the better performance will bring the fast battery drain,
if your custom ROM support WiFi N mode,
that really makes your battery life short that before.
I have the same problem and same settings as you. I read on other forum that people who updated to official 2.2 have even better battery life.
I cant even squeze 20 hours out of my battery :/
You guys should always post what ROMs you are using...
Opendesire 3.3, its the same with defrost.
i also had really bad battery life on those 2 roms
even doing nothing the phone would just keep dropping
go to official froyo 2.2
neophye roms for me have amazing battery life = 48 hrs..

Check if the phone goes to sleep correctly. Spareparts > battery usage: other usage, since last unplugged.
I had the same problem, until I found out that the phone was not going to sleep. (running and screen on percentages were way off. Almost 100% running and a lot less for screen on.
update to the last radio
I found that after forcing everything to install to SD card my battery life plummeted. There were apps/widgets that should have stayed on the phone. Once I moved these back, battery life was back to normal.
I use Systempanel to see the battery drain graph and could see a pattern to it.
Same issue here, Will try Neophyte tonight
Using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663, and it's fantastic! However batt life on .08 and .20 radio is a shocker. I watched a 1 min trailer on youtube, in and out and I lost 4% battery. Before with OpenDesire I'd be shocked if the battery percentage even twitched slightly.

I use Defrost 1.5a and I just use about 2% every hour when the phone is sleeping, and that's with auto sync and mobile data enabled. (disabled it's 1%/hour)
Always underclock to the lowest mhz when the screen is off using SetCPU and when you do use your phone make sure the brightness isn't too high.
I could make a whole list of tips, but I'm sure you'll find more than enough of those on the net.

When your screen is off, your phone should automatically go to sleep. Sometimes widgets or apps keep this from happening (like the music player), making it use battery as if you are constantly working on it.
How I resolved this issue was to find out what app or widget caused this. I ended up starting from a fresh reset, installing first all apps I really use (calendar/message widgets, powerstrip etc.)
I tested by installing an app, rebooting (or sometimes not), check the running time of the phone, turning screen off, and check again in 5 minutes. The phone should go to sleep in about 30 - 40 seconds. I am telling you this, because most apps causing this are widgets/apps running constantly.
However, I found in spareparts also that 'settings' was taking alot of usage time in usage statistics. A simple reboot did the trick from here on. But I am guessing I had installed something which made some app not close properly..
Maybe it is better to have a task manager/killer for these situations.
Running and Screen On percentages should not have too much of a difference if your testing and not using the phone while screen is off (music, bg stuff)
You could try juicedefender, it helps improve battery life by disabling unneeded connections while the phone is not in use

Crazy battery usage after OTA 1.72.405.3 How to find out what is going wrong?

Hi all,
After instaling OTA 1.72.405.3 the android system is eating away my battery like crazy.
After 5 hours my battery was down to 29% (71% was used) and the android system was responsible for 60% of this. In my CurrentWidget log I can see that (with the phone in standby) it uses ~130 mA to ~160 mA.
Does anybody know what is going on or can anybody help me by telling how to find out what is going on?
[edit: If you have the same problem, please post a reply so we can find out if this is a big problem! Thx]
This happened to me yesterday! Found out that the system process had pegged out the CPU @ 100%
I couldn't fix it, and in the end restored to factory settings. Has been OK today but I killed the battery in about 4 hours.
Radio and kernel updated?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
yes, i have the same problem! i posted another thread about it (titled constant sync after OTA update) as i first noticed the issue when the sync icon was always being displayed.
today my battery hit 20% after 6 hours with android system taking up 50% of the battery usage. its ridiculous!
if anyone has a workaround or a quick fix please post it up - this is untenable!
I have exactly the same issue, no problem with battery life before the latest OTA, and now the phone is dead within 8 hours with no usage, simply in the pocket with the display off.
Not happy at all, the phone is virtually unusable at the moment as any action accelerates the drain.
Strange! My phone is now with more battery life, after the update. It is SIM free ...

I posted this in another thread -
There seems to be a bug in the update for anyone who had HTCSense.com sync'ing turned on. Either disable all sync'ing for that and / or sign out of that account. It was consuming 100% of my CPU cycles and keeping the processor at the 1ghz mark. Once I disabled the HTCSense.com sync and rebooted the phone, all is good. I went from 100% CPU usage to about 4% and less when idle.
Personally, I'm not sure about HTCSense.com anyways. Way to buggy. I have all my SMS's backed up with SMSBackup+ to my Gmail and my contact / calendar is on Google. I've Wave Secure to lock down the phone if needs be / to find it. I think it's more reliable as well as I used to get a lot of "can't connect to the phone" on HTCSense.com and Wave secure uses at Text Message based system to activate the necessary features along with locking down the phone if the sim is removed / replaced! NICE!
Anywho, anyone who is having battery problems / finding the CPU is topepd at 100% try the above and see!!

I followed up with this:
I must say, I'm quite impressed with the battery life since the update (after I got rid of the 100% CPU bug).
I plugged the phone out at 11am this morning. Quite heavy texts (50+ sent today and at least that received). 10+ calls (incoming and out going) at 3-10mins each. Some Angry Birds, Some Market Updates. Disconnected my Facebook Acc and reconnected to cure a bug in the calendar (facebook entries were there twice), so all that data had to reload. Twitter usage through out the day. WiFi on all day. GPRS Radio only.
Now at 12.15am (so over 13 hours later), I've still got 50% Battery left! I would NEVER have gotten that previously. Not with the heavy use I gave it today.
How are other people finding it!?

Thanks for that. I dont really use any of the sense features myself so i've now disabled sense syncing completely and will see how it goes (once its fully charged again!). will keep this thread updated with any news from my end in any case.
I did notice the sync logo was up quite a bit... interesting!
Mine did it randomly... couldn't clear it so just went for factory reset which appears to have fixed it!
May turn of HTCSense however if it is likely to be causing problems...
I got the same Battery problem after new OTA and Im going crazy! What can I do? My battery lasts only about 4 hours now!!!!!!
Should I factory reset and wipe everything???
As ive posted in a few other threads i went into stock application manager and force closed everything i could to do with google, htc , friendstream, maps, facebook etc. After that my cpu 100% problem stopped, has never returned and battery life has improved compared to before the update.

I had htcsense.com enabled but to be frank I never really used it much...
disabled its syncing (every 3 hours I had set), rebooted, still had "android system" at ~65% and htc sense running at about 15% (tell me, I use launcher pro 99% of the time, is there any way to actually kill the sense ui? I swear its in the background)...
This did nothing, I tried actually removing the account, and even before a reboot the proc. usage dropped down to about 15%, which was apparently being used by the monitor I use (osmonitor). rebooted, let the phone settle, it did a sync, all seems well... So in my case an actual removal of the account was needed.
Try turning USB debugging on/off. I have it off after the last OTA and I have no /INIT problems. Maybe they fixed it...
I had the same problem, with the cpu running constantly at 100%. For me the solution was to remove the HTC Sense account, and then adding it again. After this the cpu usage dropped to normal.
well its been nearly 4 hours unplugged and i'm down to around 80% with around 30m of calls made and a dozen texts. not fantastic, but much better then before.
Did you try USB debugging? previously that has been mentioned as the CPU eater and battery hogger... just a thought..

Juice Defender

I'm installing this as a last resort before sending my phone back. After hard reset and everything, battery is still a major drain.
For those that are using it, how well does it work? Which settings are you using?
I've only the free version for now but would consider upgrading if it does help?
Also, how do you prevent meebo from disconnecting when the screen turns off? Is that an option on the free version?

About Juice Defender, for me it worked with ~1.6x batterylife.
About Meebo: get Trillian, they made it for free this week. You stay connected even if your phone is off(for max of 1 day, changeable in settings) and you'll receive al the messages which came while your online the enxt time you login again. You can manage all your accounts on the PC with the regular Trillian program and then login on your phone with your Trillian account and all the accounts will be there. It is a real nice app with very low battery consumption.
The free version is very limited. I use the ultimate version and I'm rather happy with it. I don't want to schedule traffic when my phone is idle, but that would be a massive battery saver.
Yes, you can set different settings for each app in the paid versions. You can set a trigger that makes sure your internet is always on when meego is running, even when your screen is off.
But overall, I have no problem to use my phone for more than 12 hours on battery with moderate usage. Maybe you should send your device back anyway.
I had terrible battery drain as well but ive managed to resolve this. have you tried:
1. Deleting all social hub accounts?
2. Deleting your mail account if you use the stock mail app?
3. Updated to latest official firmware?
I was experiencing 10% idle drain per hour. Now i'm at 1-2%. Battery life is a huge improvement compared to my old desire. Dont guve up on this phone.

In my experience standard battery drain per hour should be
1~2% screen off / data off
3~5% screen off / data on
12~15% screen on / data off
18~20% screen on / data on
WiFi uses less battery than 3g but as you can see display is main problem...

Mine does that (1-2% per hour at idle) without Juicedefender and push email/facebook active. The problem with JD is also that when set to switch off Wifi and data in the background when the phone is idle, it doesn't always switch them back on after the phone awakens, resulting in many pain in the ass moments.
I bought it 6 months ago and never use it any more.

Pretty standard really wifi and mobile data enabled (ultimate version), autosync on ping, 15 minute scheduled check for 30s. I don't have it turn off data at night because the phone is usually plugged in and have data enabled when the screen is on. It also manages the wifi locations so usually it only connects to wifi.

Rapid Battery Drain - How can I improve?

My battery seems to be draining quite fast. I have removed a lot of bloatware, but I'm not getting the type of performance that others are getting.
It has lost 70% in 5 hours just doing a little browsing, watching a 20minute video and playing a game for half an hour. This was with Wifi on, and mobile data switched off, and background data switched off too.
I've had the device for a week now and I've charged it every day.
Any Ideas on how to improve it?

Any Ideas on how to improve it?

Could well be your brightness level? Are you using autobrightness or is it on a fixed level (I hope its not fixed at 100%!)
If you use autobrightness try using an app like LUX auto brightness instead.

If you are rooted get wakelock detector that will tell you what's up

Thanks for that, I did have it on Auto brightness for the first few days, but the last few days I switched it off just in case it was that, but the problem remained. I will try LUX auto as you suggested.

I am rooted, and thanks for the suggestion of that app - I will get it right now and test with it today, I'll let you know later how I get on.
My guess is a corrupted media file somewhere which is causing your media server to prevent the phone from going into deep sleep. When you go to settings , battery, is media the no 1 juice sucker?

Yeah I got rid of the radio and media player from one of the homescreens as they showed quite heavily in wake up time. but the battery still kept draining fast.
Just buy another battery and enjoy the pleasures of experiencing a QHD beast I have 3 batteries (2 standard) and managed to strike a freebie on the 3rd battery ..

I wouldn't mind, but I just bought it 8 days ago, people are experiencing a lot longer battery life than I can.
Immediately just played a game and look how much has gone.
Why is Android system using up so much? I've even got location switched off and Google search etc. is deleted.
If 're not using Xposed Frameowrk for tweaks, looking into enabling ART - I did that and my battery life has been impressive.

I did try that, but it didn't work and the phone was a bit laggy. Why would android system take up 15% of whatever the battery uses? I'm getting so frustrated, I might do a factory reset.
Here is the picture of what is being used, down 40% in such a short time. :

Aosed to make things smoother not laggy
Sounds like you have something eating up massive resources.

Must be, but I don't have any idea what it is:
Here is a screenshot a few minutes after the last screenshot - another 10% down, and I watched a 8 minute video:

How long has that screen been on for?
A shot in the dark:
Do you skype? Skype was draining the battery down in the Nexus 7 2013 even when you were not using it. I disabled it and the battery improved greatly.
Another option:
It sounds to me that there's an app that is draining the battery down a whole lot. I would try to isolate that app (by deleting each one you downloaded one at a time) until you have found it.

I don't have skype, but I like your idea - I've gotten rid of almost all the bloatware stuff. What I think I'll do now is charge it to max. DO a factory reset and not allow Google to start downloading all my apps again.
Funny thing though - when I charged it last night and unplugged it for 3 hours it only dropped a couple of percent. It started dying rapidly after I opened up a few other apps.
What I'll do now is charge do a factory reset, then switch it off, then charge to max before turning it on again. When I first got it, it turned on as soon as I plugged it in. did the same happen for everyone?
What you might want to do is download Greenify on the play store. This will tell you what apps are running in the background and then it will turn them off (hibernate).

Make sure that you leave the battery charging for about 10-15 minutes more after your cradle light turns green. Sometimes the battery isn't fully charged despite the cradle light turning green. 30 minutes on a game shouldn't be using that much battery consumption.
I usually get about 10-12 hours or more on each of my batteries ( video calling, chatting, games and my 4g is turned on 90% of the time
Try this from Google Play
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm&hl=en
You can read their reviews and install the app but don't download too many battery monitor apps Keep us posted after a few days of monitoring Good luck :good:

Anyway to stop this horrendous battery drain?

I have wifi/bluetooth scanning OFF. What else could it be?

I'm not sure on this one....you have to have an app somewhere that is killing your battery. My phone normally gets almost a day and a half easily. With Wifi and bluetooth constantly on, watching YouTube videos, and even screen sharing to my TV. Go through your Apps and find the culprit that is killing your battery.
go back to stock, watch drain for a couple hours install an app, rinse and repeat until you find the culprit.
Here, personalization service uses the GPS the most, but I don't know all the related Samsung apps that depends on it.
Same problem here, i dont use too much my phone, not gaming, not videos, just social Network and the telephone dont reach the 5 1/2 hrs screen time, most of the time is on standby, the WORST battery of all my phones in years.
Those with battery drain issue, are you guys using the Exynos version? Mine is Exynos and the battery drain is crazy since day one
Try this, it doubled battery life for me, especially since I spend the majority of my time connected to WiFi.
I'm using the Exynos version and not noticing abusive battery drain.
wifi will off mobile

technically, when you connect to WIFI, mobile data will not be used.
Except you turned on the use Mobile Data if Wifi connection or signal is slow/weak option
I had the same problem... Multiple factory resets and setups later, same problem. Was ready to return the phone because System was using WAY more battery than Display and I was averaging 2.5-3 hours SOT to 5% battery. Found someone suggest Bixby problems in another thread, disabled all Bixby related apps and now battery drain is gone, regularly getting 7-8 hours SOT with no problems.
Additional screenshots (first battery screen is before, second is after disabling all Bixby junk)

Bixby doesnt even show up in battery usage. Should I still be concerned. I Bixby voice is disabled but routines and the Bixby homescreen is still enabled.

One interesting thig I see in you first(high use) screen shot is the amount of battery used by adguard, where as in the subsequent image it doesn't even show up.
Because all traffic runs through adguard, battery stats are skewed when running it. It tells you this when you first activate it. I wasn't using it when trying to isolate my battery troubles, but I'm back to using it 24/7 and still get 7-8 hours SOT, so it wasn't the cause.

Bixby Voice Wake-Up was a huge drainer for me. Find it in apps, doesn't show up on battery stats page, but when you pull up app stats, it'll show how much battery it's used since last charge and for me it was crazy high.
This phone has had the best battery life by far of any I've owned. I'm on the US version unlocked straight from Samsung, using on T-Mobile network. Use it all day at work, been at work playing games and making fantasy football moves on my phone all morning for the past 6 hours and am still at 75% (and my battery widget that uses the system algorithm says I still have 14 hours remaining at my current usage level), and I use Always On Display on ALL THE TIME. Has to be related to an app or something. I will say though that I installed sideActions and disabled all the Bixby packages (along with several other Samsung-specific packages) since day 1 using CCSWE App Manager. I'm not a light user, either - I have Nova Launcher, several KWGT dynamic widgets, Tasker, AutoInput, etc...
Do ensure you have battery optimization turned on.

This was directed towards the OP who IS having issues... some people are having issues, just because you aren't doesn't discount other people's problems.

Do you have any other apps you have disabled or frozen using CCSWE and can share the list please?
Disabling those Bixby apps helped a bit with my drain.
