[Q] How is reception compared to other at&t phones ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Unlike threads for verizon phones (nearly every phone has long threads on reception) I've not seen any comments on how reception is for this phone? Is this a difference between cdma and gsm or no one has any complaints with the note 2 reception ?

I came from the iphone 4 and would drop calls like crazy and there is a dead spot right down the road from me. I've yet to drop a call or find any dead spots.

Never dropped a call, and have best reception ever
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app

The reception on my phone is the best of all of the phones I have ever had bar none.
I have had all 3 of the AT&T Samsung Galaxy phones, an Atrix4g,Apple 4s... nothing compares to it.
Mac

I went from an Atrix to a SGN1 to the SGN2, and I've never had trouble with call quality or service on AT&T on Android.

I'd say it's the same as my old iPhone 4s. Then again, I live in a heavily covered area (nyc)

I used a lot of phones. I get a new phone every 6 months it seems and they all sucked one way or another in reception this one is the best. Rock solid phone

I think even better than my gs3 by about 5 or 10 dbm. Battery life is absolutely amazing though.

I came from the Note 1. The reception and call clarity on this phone is far superior.

I went from the Atrix 4G to the GN2. The reception and call quality is much better. The call quality, in particular, is so much better than the Atrix it's hard too believe.

I went from a HTC Vivid to SG3 to GN2. The reception has increased both times. The wifi is better also, but drops quite a bit when I hold it lefty.

[Q] Abysmal Signal Strength, hardware or software

I've got the Nexus on Verizon and I am getting terrible cell reception. From where I am my other family members iPhone 4 is getting 3 bars while mine is either 1-2 bars or struggling to find a signal. To me this is a huge dealbreaker and I wanted to know if this is an unfixable hardware issue or a software issue that will be fixed in a later update because if it is hardware then I might use my exchange to get the HTC Rezound. Any help would be great, thanks!

Good luck with this thread. The fan boys will dominate you soon saying there are no problems. I have a thread on here highlighting the issues "sgn bad reception" and its clear as day there is an issue. But everyone will defend it.
However the adr mod with the xxkk6 radio seems to be a bit better for me anyways.

Well being a fan boy dosent help anything because there is definetly something wrong here. Standing in the same spot as me, the iPhone is getting several bars while mine cannot even find a signal.

Mine has terrible signal. My 4g is useless. It seems even on 3g my battery is eaten by my phone looking for solid signal.I can't listen to Pandora on 3g without buffering. I had a rent a razor. It had amazing 4g Always. Tier 2 cs offered to send me a new gnex. I didn't take it. I don't think it will fix anything. Thinking about trading back for a Razr. I

I have fantastic 4G signal almost everywhere in Atlanta GA. Had a bit of a glitch inside a large high rise building though on the 19th. no 4G at all there and it seems hand-off to 3g isn't that great. Been solid since though.
Nevermind. I'm just cranky.

Yeah if it doesn't improve by the time I reach the end of my exchange window, I am going to exchange for another phone and just put ICS on it. Its a shame because I really like the os :/

antenna boosters, do they work?

I've seen these things all over the place, some crazy designed hexagon sticker you stick on the back of your phone or battery that's supposed to boost signal.. do these things work? if these don't work is there anything that DOES? the s3 has the worst reception of any phone I've ever used.. everyone around me will have 5 bars, ill have 0 and were all on the same AT&T network, cept I got this godawful phone.. anyone know of a legit antenna booster? if it goes under my case no one will see it anyways
'Thanks' to any useful replies!

Could be a bad phone... Take it to your local ATT store and compare signals with their display model?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I have the i9300 not the att variant so there's no way to compare. but otherwise yeah I get 0-1 bar where everyone else with att gets 4-5.. I'm hoping its just the modem, and it'll get some nice upgrade in the future, but till then, looking external help

Change your modem I used to get 1 bar to none on att now I get 3 to 4

I don't know if this will help but it appears to have worked for me. I can't find the original post with this suggestion so I don't know who to give credit to. Pull SIM card and battery. Put them back in and see what happens. It's improved my data tremendously. Hope it works for you. I'm on Verizon in case that matters.
Currently not being productive.
To answer your question -
No, they're a gimmick. If they worked, the manufactures would put them in there themselves.
It's been proven they do absolutely nothing

I had it on my old phone, galaxy s2, but it didn't work out. I didn't notice any difference.
Faulty phone for sure because the GS3 has like the best reception I have ever had and I have owned them all in the past two years, literally. Lol
Those things are still around?! Hollyyy....
SGS3 has fantastic reception. I have had so any different phones and this one has great signal strength.
Wow they really are a gimmick? I was not planning on getting one or anything but all this time I really thought they worked.
I have sprint and the reception is bad an air rave works well at home and a good repeater for distance check into the linkys E4200 v-2

Might trade my iphone 4 for this phone.

Does it still have the crappy signal/gps issues? I had it earlier this year and it was frustrating, so just want to see how things have been since then with all the updates and such....
gps sucks. it takes a long time to connect. and i have this issue where the phone fails to connect to 3g when 4g disconnects. super annoying.
get the sgs3 or evo 4g lte.
Umm no. My phone does not have those problems. Running aokp stable 4 with fh13 modem

Keep the iPhone, easier to sell and retains value. And then buy GS3

You guys are all saying its works fine and like a million other people are complaining when I googled it lol. I'm just bored with my iphone 4 and my sister took my evo 3d, So I need something to get my android fix with lol.... no upgrade til december.
Having played with a galaxy s3 in the mall, I'd say go with that. Read that section in the forum to see what issues there are. After going from a 4s to the e4gt, I miss the 4s camera and the better quality sounding audio output. I've had this one for nine months now and the screen burn in is getting on my nerves. Going to pen tile displays was samsung's choice for screen lasting longer and less apt to burning. I didn't notice a screen door effect on the s3 either. Even though the cameras are virtually the same, I can see how having a faster focus helps in certain situations with the s3. Its low light is noisy though like lots have mentioned.

Its the way things goes on in consumer world. More noise is created by people who's stuff is not working. I work for verizon fios and we only hear 5 to 10% customers call in to complain but some might come to wrong conclusion that fios always breaks. Thats how it is. I have had no issues with my e4gt. Love everything about it.

Good messaging phone

Hey guys
I need some recommendations for a good messaging phone for my daughter. We just moved over to t-mobile. My wife, son and I all have the wifi option on our S3's but we got a Gravity TXT for my daughter. Signal isn't so good in our house but we may be getting the Cel-fi (?) units.
Any thoughts out there. Even if the phone is an older version. Mainly looking for good physical keyboard and reception.
Thanks.
If you need a physical keyboard. The T-Mobile g2. Otherwise get her an sgs3, also. Swype and voice to text are better for texting really once you're used to it.
My dad and I have the sgs3. My mom has my sgs2. My gf has my g2.
My parents reception is spotty where they live. All the phones work fine
I'm running the blaze 2 modem on my mom's. Latest stock update on my dad's.
They are into texting, now.
The g2 rocks out there, too running latest stable andromodus release.

Thanks.
Trying to find just a messaging phone. She's 12 and we made the agreement with both of our kids that they could have data phones when they get to high school. If competition continues to work on the prices we may revisit that. I haven't checked to see how cheap the minimum data is.
There are cheaper ones out there of course. That was just the first one to pop into my head.. Check out T-Mobiles website for Phones with Keyboards. Being such a yound kid, it wouldnt hurt to start with a very very cheap phone to see how they handle it.
No need to spend hundreds on a preteen. This phone is too big for kids. Go with something a bit smaller.
The question is, are you competent in rooting and running custom roms? Because many earlier androids are horrible stock, and amazing rooted. I think if you can run custom roms, look into mytouch 4g, g2, hd2, and others that released around that time. They are going for below $100 in my area, and to me they were amazing phones. Although two of them don't have a keyboard... but kids are very smart and tech savvy I'm sure they would love to learn how to Swype.

Blackberry 9700. Perfect for smaller hands and has awesome battery life and one of the best physical keyboards out there.
I have seen them for under 100 bucks off Craigslist.

Thanks again guys. I understand I can put a data phone on a line without data if I don't go through tmo to do it? Just buy one off craigslist or ebay. If I do that, can I use a wifi capable phone without a data plan. We just don't think she needs data but I am willing to pay for a decent piece of hardware.
Again, just trying to do this on the cheap.
Thanks a bunch.

Yep Wi-Fi isn't controlled by your carrier. Totally forgot about bb, never used one, but they're good alternatives with longer battery life.

Galaxy Nexus? Yes no maybe?

I am currently on my 2nd rezound and will recieve my third tomorrow. If it does the same thing the first two did then I have to decide on an alternate phone. They listed the nexus as one of the options. I've done my share of research but wanted some real life opinions of every day users. How is the reception on the nexus? What about battery life? The rezound was okay on battery, but the reception was kick @$$. I know u guys are probably biased, but gimme some other reasons to make the jump!
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
If reception and battery life are your two most important priorities, then you might want to stay clear of nexus. Battery can be overcome with more batteries. You might not want to do that but you should also consider that nexus still uses early generation lte radio. And from what I've read, Verizon nexus had issues with radio. Many people had to get replacements til they got proper reception. Anyways, the gsm version is better overall, minus the lte. Might want to consider a phone with newer generation lte like the Motorola's though I personally don't want to recommend Motorola ATM because of their lack of regards and support with customers.
...
Well those are somewhat important, but I grew tired of the rooting process with the rezound as well. HTC is awful now when it comes to that. The most I got with my rezound, rooted was around 3.5 hrs screen time. Normal usage I could only get around 2.5
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
summing up others experiences, that is approximately what you will get with the nexus. extra batteries are cheap too. i recommend OEM over anything else,so you should be able to double your battery life easy with an extra $25-35 battery. but yeah, if that is all you were getting with the rezound, sell it immediately and get a nexus.
I can make it an entire day with the nexus. And i haven't had reception issues. I am on sprint though.

I'd recommend getting the Nexus, and if you are on Verizon, the extended battery they offer. Then, I'd get a case (I recommend "Cruzer Lite Androidified A2 TPU Case" These), with a nice screen protector. If you live in an urban area, near the east coast where Verizon has most LTE towers, you should be fine with reception. Plus, you will have Jelly Bean and probably one of the most "replay" (talking about ROMs) value I have ever seen with a phone. It's a great experience.
I get 4 hours or so of screen on time and awesome reception...
this phone is pure win

The reception on this phone has been great for me. Battery isn't anything to brag about though. If you want a good phone to root and flash ROMs with, I would say this is it. The galaxy nexus has a huge community and plenty of good ROMs to try out. And the lack of bloatware is nice too.

I've had my Verizon Galaxy nexus for about three days reception has been fantastic much better than my thunderbolt and the battery has been lasting about 12 -14 hours.
