Galaxy Nexus? Yes no maybe? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am currently on my 2nd rezound and will recieve my third tomorrow. If it does the same thing the first two did then I have to decide on an alternate phone. They listed the nexus as one of the options. I've done my share of research but wanted some real life opinions of every day users. How is the reception on the nexus? What about battery life? The rezound was okay on battery, but the reception was kick @$$. I know u guys are probably biased, but gimme some other reasons to make the jump!

If reception and battery life are your two most important priorities, then you might want to stay clear of nexus. Battery can be overcome with more batteries. You might not want to do that but you should also consider that nexus still uses early generation lte radio. And from what I've read, Verizon nexus had issues with radio. Many people had to get replacements til they got proper reception. Anyways, the gsm version is better overall, minus the lte. Might want to consider a phone with newer generation lte like the Motorola's though I personally don't want to recommend Motorola ATM because of their lack of regards and support with customers.
...

Well those are somewhat important, but I grew tired of the rooting process with the rezound as well. HTC is awful now when it comes to that. The most I got with my rezound, rooted was around 3.5 hrs screen time. Normal usage I could only get around 2.5
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2

summing up others experiences, that is approximately what you will get with the nexus. extra batteries are cheap too. i recommend OEM over anything else,so you should be able to double your battery life easy with an extra $25-35 battery. but yeah, if that is all you were getting with the rezound, sell it immediately and get a nexus.

I can make it an entire day with the nexus. And i haven't had reception issues. I am on sprint though.

Same and I'm on vzw. I have the extended battery. This is an awesome phone! :good:

Had mine a couple of weeks now. I love it battery lasts a day buy not more than that. I'm on sprint and lte works at my work but not my home.

I'd recommend getting the Nexus, and if you are on Verizon, the extended battery they offer. Then, I'd get a case (I recommend "Cruzer Lite Androidified A2 TPU Case" These), with a nice screen protector. If you live in an urban area, near the east coast where Verizon has most LTE towers, you should be fine with reception. Plus, you will have Jelly Bean and probably one of the most "replay" (talking about ROMs) value I have ever seen with a phone. It's a great experience.

I get 4 hours or so of screen on time and awesome reception...
this phone is pure win

The reception on this phone has been great for me. Battery isn't anything to brag about though. If you want a good phone to root and flash ROMs with, I would say this is it. The galaxy nexus has a huge community and plenty of good ROMs to try out. And the lack of bloatware is nice too.

I've had my Verizon Galaxy nexus for about three days reception has been fantastic much better than my thunderbolt and the battery has been lasting about 12 -14 hours.

To sgs2 or not to sgs2?

Just moved to t mobile and have a one s. Awesome phone, with spotty reception., which is the reason for wanting to exchange. Can't exchange for sgs3 due to backorders and 14 day exchange. Can go to sgs2 but is it worth the little downgrade?
I love mine. The device is rock solid and the multitude of custom ROMS, GB and ICS, should give you enough variety to find what makes you happy.

Don't do it because its going to take a while for us to get the new software (Jellybean). I'm going to give you a little advice that I learn the hard way. Only buy Google made phones like galaxy nexus. Never buy other parties like Samsung and HTC cause they never update phone and there's not a lot of development. For android only get Google specific manufacturer phone . I can't stress that enough

Thanks but I'm well aware of that. I'm looking for a well developed phone hat doesn't have spotty reception the way the one s does

Reception is a tough one as it depends on so many factors. I live just a few miles from the nearest TMO tower and my job is only 15 miles away so I always have great reception. I'm currently running the Whitehawkx AOKP ROM and have no issues with audio, camera, GPS or battery. Audio is crystal clear on calls and through apps such as Pandora, HBOGo, etc. The camera is what it is, 8mp is capable of quite a bit and if you get a solid HDR app such as HDR Camer+ by Almalence, you'll really get to see the hardware used to its potential.
I don't use maps much so I can't comment a whole lot on GPS other than to say the few times I have needed it, it has worked flawlessly. The battery is of course dependent upon far too many factors that all come from personal usage tendencies but I can say from my experience I get between 15 and 20 hours of battery a day on a full charge.
I'd suggest just checking the phone out in store if possible to get a better feel of what you'd be getting. Yeah, the OS updates are few and far between, and could very well be over at this point, but with all the custom ROM choices and the abilities of the Devs here, I wouldn't be shocked to see more custom choices as we go along.

There isn't a bright future for this phone. Most of the devs are moving away for greater phones. Our aokp dev doesn't have this phone anymore so it's not looking too good for aokp jellybean. I'd figure out a way for an s3 or wait for the nexus to come back (hopefully).
But if you must then this is a good phone with good Rom options at this point in time. Just don't be too hopeful about the future.

But presently its still chugging along. I'm starting to drift towards getting the gs2, interchangeable battery expandable storage, bigger screen, stable roms. Let's here some more opinions.
If your still in your 14 days why don't u return the one s and cancel the service. Go buy a cheap prepaid phone get on T-Mobile prepaid or another prepaid service. Then when the gs3 becomes available resign up for service thru T-Mobile.

Can't do that have my wife's and mother in law on my plan.
Each line is a separate two yr agreement if yours is in its 14 days u can cancel your line specifically. Your wife and mother in law will still have service. You just won't.

Don't get this phone. Get a Galaxy Nexus.
I'm not paying full price for the gnex.
If you're looking for a really good phone but don't want to spend $600.00 then the S2 is for you IMO! I've enjoyed my S2 since I first bought it. I don't know how big you are on rooting, ROMs, and the like, but even if you don't root this phone is great! The only thing that might turn you off is the larger than average screen (the Galaxy S3 is even bigger, but thinner), in that case I would go with a Blaze.
.

The s2 is a great device. Just because nexus got jellybean, people are acting like the s2 is complete crap. development is slow but at least we have something. Signal is great for me, battery lasts long and is interchangable ,SD, fast GPS lock, and lots of other things.

is this phone still worth getting?

Right now im on the amaze 4g... and i have to say.... the development for that phone is horrible. :/ when it was on gingerbread it wasnt all that good either. now there is ics and dev is severely crippled. the specs are nice but the dev part is lacking.
now i was thinking if i could buy this from the play store for 349. is it worth it? i dont know. i know you guys will prlly say yes. but theres a upcoming nexus this fall if im not mistaking. should i wait or tell google to shutup and take my money?!
im thinking about getting this or another HTC device... but the problem is that HTC doesnt release its kernel source right away (like it did with the amaze). im not sure if thats true with their other devices like htc one S or one X. can anyone clue me in? So if jellybean drops on the one S and one X will there be another problem with the kernal source being released? i like their build quality.
Im only going to buy nexus devices in the future fuhhhhhh. but the question is should i wait or get this one?
help me out guys?
I came from the amaze forums as well, and the galaxy nexus absolutely destroys the amaze in every way except for maybe build quality but there is so much more pros than cons it's unbelievable. I can honestly say I've never been happier, I'm running stock jelly bean no root, nothing, and its way better than the amaze custom rommed, over clocked, and custom kernel....

you should try the paranoid rom. it looks sweet!
yea lol small world we have fellow amaze user. im seriously about to pull my hair from my head. its so annoying its not even funny.
hows the camera for the galaxy nexus? when did you buy it btw?
would you get the next round of nexus devices? hopefully there will be 5 to choose from so there would be no more issue with kernals from other manufactures with their other phones
Alright here is what I recommend. Keep your amaze. Buy a Nexus 7. & wait for the Next Nexus.
We are just 2-3 month away and that N7 will be able to keep u happy long enough.
What do u think???

I would take the Nexus over the Amaze for the screen alone, lest we forget then other specs. If I were you I would sell your amaze and buy the nexus. You should break even on that. Then see what comes in a couple of months. New Nexus? HTC One X+? TMO may have some nice devices coming down the pipe.

This may sound silly, but I'm just going to tell you anyway. Getting the galaxy nexus was like having a huge weight removed off my shoulders. I feel so relieved from it.
I bought it for 380. From somebody off craigslist, but it came with an extra housing and 3 sgp cases.
The next nexus won't be 350, so consider that.
And honestly the camera on the amaze destroys the camera on the galaxy nexus, the pictures taken with my galaxy nexus are good overall but not mind blowing like the amaze. The camera isn't horrible. Just good enough to not be a deal breaker.

If Google discontinues it & for some reason have not upgraded, you can root it and get the latest OTA through CM or something.

nexus 7 is nice but not enough for me to buy it if the galaxy nexus also has jb and a hybrid mode.

It's worth it. In fact i just bought it couple days ago. It's an unlocked international gsm for only $360. Half years ago it was $600, so it's cheap now.
What i like about it is it's a pure google experience and keep getting major updates unlike other 3rd party handset.
The bad thing about this is the screen. I could see a greent tint on the left side of my screen i ln low brightness, and people said it's normal with amoled. Urghh.

From my understanding this phone still has a great amount of life left. I'm getting a nexus on Tuesday even though there is no SD slot I'm confident I won't need it even though j have about 10gbs of music.
So if your torn between phones I'd say get the Nexus/DInc4g/Sgs3. If your into rooting and feeling free.. then go with the nexus.

I wouldn't describe the battery life as "terrible" - it all depends how much you use the screen each day. On average, 50% of my daily battery consumption is the screen. The more you use it, the less life you will get from it.
I use mine a few hours each day (I would say I'm a moderately heavy user), and get a full day out of it with a slightly larger, 2000mAh genuine battery, which cost $38 on eBay. The genine battery has the NFC antenna built in, whereas the non-genuine batteries do not.
The ability to replace the stock 1750mAh battery with a range of after market ones means you can tailor the physical size of your phone to your usage habits. Try doing that with a One X.
If you want, you can buy a 3800mAh (non-genuine) battery for about $20 on eBay. For that sort of money you can't really go wrong...
Pro is the huge choise of custom ROMs that you can run on the phone. There is one for just about every sort of user.
Enjoy!!!

[Q][VZN]GN vs GS3 battery life

I've given my GN to my son so I could take the new GS3. I have to tell you that I'm pretty shocked that the GS3 routinely (stock or rooted and unlocked bootloader) gets about 24-30 hours of battery life with 4 hours of screen time.
having the same sie battery (2100), why the hell can't we get the same kind of battery life out of the GN? Aren't these 2 phones supposed to be close cousins if not siblings? Any ROM/kernel combo out there that can achieve this good of bettry life? currently on BAMF.
It's the Krait S4 chipset. Much smaller and therefore much more efficient.
Yeah, the Sammy improved on the weaknesses of the gnex w/ the s3, but the s3 has ics. Ics seemed to have better battery life. Jb seems to be more of a battery hog no matter which rom you have. Maybe when jb radios are released battery life might be a little better, but I just got 4 1/2 hrs screen time on codename's rom the other day. If I would have seen this post then, I would have posted a screenie...

ICS still had terrible battery life on the GNEX. Not much difference between JB. On the 2100mAh battery I averaged 2 hours on screen time with LTE on using ICS and JB. Battery life is terrible on this thing.
Looking at the S3 battery life on LTE, basically we got screwed.

No one is arguing that the Big red is evil and is quite expensive. But they have the best signal, coverage, and speed. No one argues that. If you have a 4g LTE phone, why would you be running anything less? It's a silly argument.
I use google voice for texting, have 1400 min of anytime minutes for 3 phones with 10 friends and family numbers, and unlimited data for all three. My bill icluding taxes and fees is $212 a month. That's pretty reasonable compared to others. The problem, you can't get it as a new customer.

Worth $10 for a refurb?

My wife just upgraded to an iPhone5 by signing a 2-year extension, so I've decided to upgrade to another phone to keep our contract terms the same. I have a Galaxy Nexus that I've enjoyed using - mainly for the official updates. But for $10, I can get a refurb One X. I know these phones are pretty similar, but I wanted to list a few gripes about the GNex and see if they are evident in the HOX:
1. GPS hardly works - I've tried some fixes, but I always seem to have to turn off Google location and reboot for a signal to sync.
2. Battery Life - I'm a pretty heavy web surfer and the GNex will typically last 4 - 5 hours (30%). On a typical day, I usually charge once around 1:00pm and before bed.
I love JB, but if it not released for HOX in October, I imagine I can find a ROM with it?

Battery life depeds on how u use the phone..
If u use 3g all the time and usual auto sync then u can get aprox around 3 hours of screen on time..
Compared to gnex its lower..
U can get 4-5 hours on galaxy s3..
So tbh hox fails on battery..

Sorry, what's that? $10 for the phone? $10 a month? For 2 years? I'd be all over that.
Thanks for the responses. I'll need to do a little more research. It's $10 when signing a 2-year agreement.

the One X and Nexus are not similar....massively better screen, built and camera, GPU and CPU i don't see the "similar"
just be prepared for a lot of screen off time and less screen on time, Tegra 3 is different from all other phones it gives crazy amount of sleep time thanks to the extra low power core and consumes a lot during actual use, over wifi browsing you can achieve 3.5 hours, don't forget the screen is over 4x brighter so even at 25% you are still brighter than the GNEX, heavy 3d gaming gives around 2.5 to 3 hours on stock ROM
custom ROMs are aplenty and CM10 is fully functional but you loose the benefits of Sense (believe when i say benefits) and you loose the camera abilities like HDR and burst mode
the current 2.17 Android 4.0.4 firmware is almost as smooth as JB
we had the leaked JB alpha test firmware for few weeks, beta is just around the corner and the final OTA is coming in OCTOBER
be careful with refurbs we had lots of QC issues on launch
Just got off of the phone with AT&T and got a new one with an otter commuter case for free! GNex to EBay!

ok just a note AT&T is the Snapdragon 4 version
so most of my comments still stand except battery life
with the S4 version you get more screen on time and less screen off time
here is the proper forum for you mate

Blame AT&T. They called the One XL the One X for some reason.

The 18 Month Mark Is Almost Upon Us

Well we've got a little over a month to go before we hit that magical 18 month mark and the support cycle for our beloved nexii ends. Not that that matters a whole lot, but its a milestone nonetheless. Despite the ongoing battery struggles and some awful early (and sometimes reappearing) signal issues, I have to say that I've loved this phone, and at the end of the day it really did meet most most of my expectations. It can still handle pretty much everything you can throw at it, even at 18 months old, and that's not something you can say about a lot phones at this point in their life cycles. I did hate it while we were waiting for the first official radio update and 4.04, and even then I never really stopped thinking about selling it. But from the first JB update and since, I've been a happy camper and even turned down a family member's offer to buy me a full price Note 2 or DNA.
Interested to hear what other launch day or close-to-launch day purchasers would say about if and how it has lived up to their expectations.

I have had my nexus since December 2011, not exactly launch day but that was the soonest I could get my hands on it in Canada. My experience in owning this device has been interesting. In the end I have realized what features I value more then others based on the nexus' downfalls. Some of these include radio strength, battery life, camera quality and of course software is still vital to me.
The 18 months is coming quickly upon us and our Galaxy nexus is probably only going to get one more official update and to be honest I'm fine with it, as this will give me extra reason to upgrade.

Well I've had my nexus for about 8 months or so now. I did not upgrade when it first came out and stuck with the nexus s for a bit.
Then got the note 1 for a while. Then finally came over late last year cause I got tired of waiting on Samsung to release jellybean for the note 1.
Anyway... I can easily say this has been the best experience I've had with any handset. Never been happier.
Jellybean solved a lot of problems with the fluidity and speed of the already excellent android experience.
The handset itself is still a beauty too. I never get tired of those sexy curves and all clean black front end with no buttons!
The handset still runs well with no big issues. Games and apps load in an almost instant. Blazing fast still. I will keep it for a good while I think.
Will try and wait till the fall at least. See what the next nexus brings. Or that Motorola x phone.
The only thing I would change about the galaxy nexus would be more ram. It's the only small issue I have very rarely. Especially when using chrome with a few tabs open. It eats a lot of ram at times.
But all in all... This has been and still is an excellent handset. Love it

I've had mine since launch day on Verizon, and I stuck with it after the fiasco of the launch date that was delayed and delayed. I wanted the nexus experience and I have enjoyed it for the most part, but Verizon has ruined some of the experience with their late updates and such. I will be keeping this phone as long as I can since I am grandfathered into the unlimited data so I don't want to upgrade. When it comes time to get a new phone, I hope I have the option to buy a nexus.

^ y'all giving out stories like this device will die , this phone ain't going no where ! It will live forever !

Did google said anything about that 18 month something? I think you're all being paranoid. Go ahead and flash something coz it looks like y'all need your medication.
I thought support ends after 2 years?
I/O is coming.
And I thought support was for 2 major Android versions. Like the Nexus S.

I bought my Gnex used and I've had it about 9 months. I love the pure Google experience and it helped me survive to the end of my contract with VZW. I'm waiting to see if Google has something up their sleeve at I/O for a new Nexus phone. I'll probably go to the Nexus 4 or whatever they announce then and free myself from carrier crap. Though maybe I'll wait until my Gnex craps out first and buy a Nexus 10 to replace my aging Iconia A500. Anyway, I'm firm in the Nexus camp!
Going by past history, each nexus device is roughly supported for around 2 years, which means we might stop getting official updates at around october..

I am on my second Contract with verizon...my first 2 year contract had the OG droid, Droid X and HTC thunderbolt in there. this is the only phone i have had on the current contract. i Do have urges to get a used S3 and throw an AOSP ROM on it, but i still think i would miss my Nexus.
all of my phones, i have tried everything in my power to make it as close to a nexus device as possible....and now that i have a nexus device, i dont have to worry about it. it is always up to date, it is super smooth, i haven't run into any issues, the Community is EXACTLY what i wanted, and the phone is even more than what i wanted. a phone that is still smooth and fast 15 months after i bought it, i am simply amazed.
and this phone gets more and more exciting come these google events, because i know i will have what they announce later that day or the following one.
I've had this phone for over a year which is an eternity for me. I still enjoy it so I'm having trouble convincing myself to retire it which is good thing. Sure there's now faster phones with bigger screens and better hardware but this thing still holds its own.
My only hope now is that I accidentally break it to give me reason to replace it. Maybe then my wife will understand.

Oh man! This is exactly how I feel. I'm tempted to buy the N4, but I feel guilty because my gnex still works perfectly. Also if I pull the trigger and buy the N4, I'm going to regret the decision by the end of this year when the next Nexus comes out.
I might just get drunk one day and make the purchase and blame alcohol for the decision!

Exactly my thoughts too! If it works, why bother replacing it? I'm getting a Nexus tablet to satisfy that buying urge. I'll probably hold out until the Nextsus before I doing any phone upgrading.
