[Q] GAPPS 4.2 question - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

This is a very stupid question but can you flash gapps 4.2 on a touchwiz based rom? I'm running Blackjelly rom and would like to flash either 4.1.2 or 4.2 apps, is that possible or will they keep crashing?

I highly doubt it. I don't think gapps will work on touchwiz.

Another question
I have another question about G apps. Instead of having to flash the G-apps, is it alright to restore the app only from a backup app like Titanium backup from an older ics rom. Or will this cause any kind of problem?

I'm pretty sure it would work but it'll have duplicates in the system folder so you'll have to manually delete that

I am using several 4.2 apps (gmail, keyboard, Playstore, camera) on TW ICS and they work just fine. I usually use the stock camera because as far as I can find, 4.2 camera does not allow external storage. I'm guessing this is connected to Nexus 4 not having external storage. Maybe mods will be made as 4.2 becomes available for other devices.

Could you please post the link to the forum where you got the gapps from?

They are in different posts in Themes and Apps section. You'll have to search.

Alright I'll just try a couple

I would do a backup then try it out

Stock apps as in stock sense? From a non-rooted mytouch or just the google apps? I would suggest looking for the cm wiki and downloading the google apps package from there, you might have the wrong set.

How to get Stock Samsung ICS Apps over to Jelly Beans?

So is there a way to get Stock Samsung ICS Apps over to Custom Rom Jelly Beans? Such as the Calender, Camera, Memo, Calculator and Clock? Maybe through backup or file drop method? Thanks.
For some, you can download the .apk file and install it. I believe the SGS3 forum has their newer TW apps for download somewhere.
Should be able to use Titanium backup to do it, might only be the paid version not entirely sure. Well worth the $ though if you don't already have it.

I think it's not impossible. Stock apps require Touchwiz and specific.framework to be functional. JB Custom roms dont have those things.

[Q] Is there a way to enable call recording in stock ROM?

Hello there,
I have a rooted t999, unlocked. After going through multiple posts on this forum, I have realized that to enable the call recording feature on your samsung galaxy s3 t999, you got to install a custom ROM.
But, is there any way to update a .apk (or any other method) , compatible with the stock ROM on t999 which might enable the call recording feature back?
Cheers!

Here is the one from FreeGS3 r6.
This is NOT my work!
This the stock UVALG1 Dialer app modded by uoY_redruM, dev for the FreeGS3 rom. All thanks and credit goes to him!
(Try out his rom, btw. It is awesome!)
This should work on any stock based rom though.
I'm pretty sure this is where the mod is included. Not sure right now if its dependant on another modded apk as well. Heading to work so will check later if this doesn't work by itself.

So will this not work on custom ROMs?
Its the samsung dialer so itll only work on stock based roms.
It'll likely be dependant on other parts of the touchwiz framework and is integrated along with contacts and such.
You can try it but I would be extremely surprised if it worked on anything like CM or ASOP.

That, I do not know. I don't use wifi calling so can't test for you either. I think that it would work, but you may just have to give it a test run to find out. If you do, report back as im curious about it myself now that you brought it up!

Wait, sorry I shoulda been specific I guess! I don't think you can install like a normal app.
Use root explorer and copy the original from /system/app for your backup.
Pay attention to the permissions it has and copy the modded one over the old. Change permissions to what they were before. Reboot into recovery and clear cache and dalvik, then reboot system.
Test.

Thanks a lot Doc!
This is quite interesting! Although I have root explorer, I am terrible with the android stuff and so I am worried about replacing this apk with the existing phone.apk. (its the lack of "recovery" knowledge that scares me to go ahead)
Has anyone of you experts made the dialer work so far through this integration of FreeGS3 phone.apk on the stock ROM?
Cheers!
Another thing that I just figured - In my stock ROM, I do not have a phone.apk (attaching screenshot)
Which app should be backed up? I am guessing that the GS3 apk should be renamed as the stock ROM apk. correct?
http://db.tt/t7Ig4rsG
Edit 2:
guys, just figured out that there is actually an .apk called SecPhone_TMO.apk (kept searching for phone.apk )
so, please ignore the screenshot above!
although, will wait for someone to try replacing the stock ROM .apk with the GS3.
Worked perfect on Wicked's ROM. Have to move the stock phone APK out of the system\app directory and replace it with Doc's. Make sure to put the phone in airplane mode first.
Question - where are the recordings stored?
Thanks for the awesome mod!
They are stored at /sdcard/sounds/
Thank uoy_redrum at the freegs3 thread. Its his work not mine.
.....hope he didn't mind me sharing it like this. Shoulda asked first.
Ill check with him to be sure though.
You guys should try his rom. He's an outstanding dev and very helpful!

I wouldn't worry much about it. Especially if you make a copy of the original file as a backup on extSDcard.
Titanium backup works really well too.
Biggest thing to remember is the permissions.
If you can boot into recovery, wiping cache is no big deal at all. Wiping dalvik isn't bad either. When you reboot it'll rebuild dalvik but will use the new app you copied into system.
ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BEFORE ANYTHING!!!
That's the most important yhing you can do when messing with anything. It basically creates an exact image/snapshot of your current setup so you can go back to it at anytime.
Nandroid = Peace of Mind!

Well if you do that, the app will become user app, not system app. I don't know about you, but I personally would rather have Gmail system app then user app
I've have it installed for couple of days on 4.1.2 - without any issues. Like the pinch to zoom and swipe to delete..
